  1. I thought about putting the new fuse down there as well, but it means removing yet another fairing to get to it. Running it through the back of the upper fairing and tucking it away and out of the weather seemed like a better alternative, and it's more readily accessible. Hopefully I won't have to be replacing the fuse anytime soon (meaning that there is something else wrong!), but it leaves the option open.
  2. After installing my highway lights, the fuse got so hot after about 2 hours of riding that it literally melted the solder right off the caps. That cheap plastic fuse holder is total junk. I cracked the fairing open, re-routed the wires to the opening under the triple tree in the back of the inside fairing, replaced the stock fuse with a weatherproof mini AGM 10 amp fuse, and was able to tuck the whole thing under the tank where it is totally accessible without having to split the fairing again. What a pain, but it beats the alternative. That stock in-line plastic fuse holder and old style fuse just aren't designed to handle the current I guess. The new one is working fine, and doesn't get warm at all to the touch.
  3. "Yamaha Motor Corp. is recalling certain FJR 1300s due to defects in the vehicles’ electrical systems. The potential number of vehicles affected is 9,850. FJR 1300s manufactured from February 2006 through March 2009 could have potential issues with ground joint connectors. The company says that the ground joint connector of the wire harness can overheat, become deformed, and possibly lead to malfunctioning ignition systems and other electrical components. Yamaha dealers are being asked to install an additional wire sub-lead or install a new main wire harness free of charge. For more information, call Yamaha at 800-962-7926." Rut row. Not good.
  4. I used Plast-Aid for a similar repair on the broken extrusions in the upper fairing that the wind deflectors screw into, and it also worked great! Literally stronger than the original ABS. Can't go wrong with either product.
  5. Fuel injection - - - where are you when we need you???????
  6. I last serviced mine at 50K, and just turned 70K this weekend. So I'll probably service them again at my next fluid and filter changes in another 3K to 5K miles. Mine were also pretty clean the last time I had them out. My first indicator that they may need to be serviced is when my mileage starts to drop a little on a consistent basis under similar driving conditions. I'm starting to notice that now, so it's probably time.
  7. My cruise has also be intermittent over the last few years. The lights all worked, but it would just crap out for no apparent reason. I never used it much, so I never tried to do anything about it. But last week, when my rectifier blew while on a long trip, I had it replaced along with getting a new battery (needed one anyway), and low and behold now my cruise works great. Used it all the way home from West Virginia without one single issue. No idea if a new rectifier impacts the cruise mechanism or not, but that was the only thing that got changed out or looked at by the dealer. Maybe it was just coincidence, but that's my story and I'm stickin to it!
  8. Congrats! You will love your new RSV. I have the Sampson slashcuts and love them! They have a deep tone rumble on acceleration but level off nicely at cruise speeds. Their tone is more like a 6 cyl. inboard marine engine than a motorcycle, which make them unique - - loud, but not obnoxious.
  9. Bob, can you also relocate the new fuse holder to the left side fuse box instead of the fuse box behind the lower fairing? That one is much easier to get to. And you're right - - that plastic fuse holder is a piece of crap! I wrapped it in electrical tape to protect it and keep the fuse from rattling around in it, causing the lights to flicker on and off.
  10. OK, so I managed to get the new light kit assembled, with only two screw-up's (which is about par for the course for me!) - - I put the directionals on the wrong sides, necessitating a dis-assembly and re-assembly and then I mounted the new light bar on the bike and forgot to put the lower air deflectors back on the bar assembly before doing so. So off it came again. Other than that, I did great! LOL! Question: I'm having more and more trouble lining up the mounting bolts to get the new assembly back on the bike with the fairing on. I can do it easier with the fairing still split, but then it's a very tight squeeze to slip the fairing behind the lights to get it remounted. Any suggestions on this? What would also make it easier to do is have 4 hands instead of 2. This is really a pain to put on. But hey, the lights actually work and I didn't screw up the wiring part! Thanks.
  11. Thanks Randy. I will for sure contact you next time up that way.
  12. Many many thanks for all of the offers of assistance. I've been sans computer for a few days on this trip, so here's what transpired. Randy (great guy!) turned me on to Jim's M/C sales in Johnson City, who got my scoot in first thing Thursday morning to check it out. Turns out Jim's is a good customer of ours with Kawasaki and Suzuki (my clients), and their VP/GM, Kirk Hayes, is an absolute saint. He had his guys drop everything and work on my RSV. Fortunately it was a regulator, not the stator, so they found one, installed it and I was on my way in about 2 hours. If every in the JC area, be sure to patronize this dealer. I surely will. Kirk is a true supporter, a patriot and a genuinely good man.
  13. Thanks for the replies and calls. I will try to get ahold of someone at Jim's Motorsports Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki in the morning to see if they can get it in right away. Keep your fingers crossed!
  14. En route from the ATL to W.VA, my '99 RSV is experiencing some electrical problems. The scoot crapped out in Greenville SC, so I replaced the battery, and all seemed to be OK. Then it happened again up here in Erwin TN, so I'm thinking it might be the stator. Any suggestions on dealers or repair locations up here in the Johnson City area that I can contact tomorrow morning? I'm hole up here in a Holiday Inn Express, riding out the bad storms tonight. FYI, my cell is 770-364-4393 if anybody has any ideas. Thanks.
  15. Headed there tomorrow with a stopover in Bristol. Thursday's destination is the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs. From Bristol, we go up to Wytheville VA, then up to Princeton to pick up US460, to US219 to Ronceverte, then over to WSS. The forecast is for pretty crappy weather most of the trip up, but the ride home will be better, with more mountain riding and less on the superslab.
  16. The wife and I are heading out tomorrow for a nice ride to the Greenbrier up in W. VA. for 5 days of meetings and R&R. Think I'll Seafoam both bikes before we leave! Praying for no storms en route......
  17. I didn't know about TWO closing. That's a shame.
  18. Great suggestion! I love Pooles BBQ, but their fried apple pie is the BOMB!
  19. I love that man, and I love what he stands for and the lesson he is teaching so many thousands of Americans each and every year at RT. That no sacrifice is too great in making sure our veterans, wounded warriors, those killed in action or those missing in action are never forgotten. I was there this year and got this picture as I rode past him. I gave him an "ouuu-rahh" shout, and got one back immediately in return. I'll never forget it. See you next year Marine!
  20. Some nice rides and stops along the way.... 356 from Helen to Batesville, and up 197 up past Lake Burton (great restaurant on right side at the top of the lake - - can't remember the name, but you can't miss it. It's right on the water). Awesome scenery on this road. Then left on 76 up to Hiawassee to the marina on Lake Chatuge (tiki hut bar and grill at the marina- - great food, and a kick a$$ margarita with a splash of Gran Gala on the top!). From there, head back south on 17 to Wolfpen Gap (180) to Sutches - - always a great ride, no matter how many times you've done it, but be sure to stop at TWO (Two Wheels Only) where it hits Rt. 60 for a chicken salad samage and some sweet tea. The best around! For my money, the ride north on Rt. 60 all the way up to McCaysville on the TN line is the way to go. From there I'd head south down to Elijay, and then across Fort Mountain to Chatsworth, and then northwest up to Ringgold, Ft. Oglethorpe and the Chickamauga National Military Park. If you've done all that in one day, you went way too fast! Have fun....
  21. Actually I do top my RPM's out in each gear as a rule, but when cruising on open country roads at 45 - 50, I do find myself popping it into a lazy 4th gear just to lower the "volume". But when I need the "gas", this bike definitely has it!
  22. Maybe it's just me, but my RSV runs sooooo much better after it's been cranked up to 70 - 80 mph for a little while. I ran the 230 miles up and back to Chattanooga today, and this bike just loves the high speeds on the interstate, and just felt like it had so much smooth power at the top end of 5th gear. I was already cruising at 75 when I needed to do a fast pass of an 18-wheeler, and when I hit the throttle, man it just flew in response. I really don't like interstate travel and don't do it much, so this feeling of power and acceleration isn't something I get to experience a lot. Is what I'm feeling at that speed related to ideal engine compression? I wish it performed that way at all speeds in all gears. What a rush!
  23. Got the kit today via UPS. Everything new and in the box. I read the instructions and it's doesn't look overwhelming, but I'm sure I will run into my fair share of problems installing these bad boys. Other than including a separate relay, does anyone else have any suggestions to make this installation go any smoother or easier? I mean, other than having someone else do it!
  24. On the calendar so we can finally but some faces with names. Looking forward to it.
