  1. Been there, done that, great trip, but don't go to Meat Cove no matter what you've heard. My favorite trip would to ride New Zealand from end to end and then drink beer in Australia before returning home. PS: Not sure how to do pics, but this is a link from another forum that shows a few shots from our trip to Nova Scotia in Sept 2008: http://lanceowners.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/72110566111/m/757105044
  2. You live in one of my favorite places to visit, ride or eat out. That whole North Ga mountain area is great, but Dahlonega is one of the best courthouse squares in the South.
  3. My troubles began about a month ago when I had an oil change and decided to try a synthetic by using Mobile 1 20w-50. My whine (which really didn't bother me) turned into a scream. I talked with the service manager and he grudgingly agreed to get me an "I" basket and we both agreed on going back to Dino. The factory tech suggested Yamalube (surprise) 20w-50. When I first drove the bike it seemed to be considerably better-the scream back to a whine and at a different pitch. A 100 miles later the whine is getting louder and so I decide to try Rotella 15w-40 and major difference. I'm beginning to believe it's the oil viscosity and will try 10w-30 at the next oil change (I've had 3 oil changes in the last 200 miles). It may not be just the basket but also viscosity. For the 1st 4000 miles I was using Yamalube 10w-40 and the whine didn't bother me. I had thought my troubles began when I went to synthetic, but I now believe it was because of the change to 20w-50. After I enjoy my bike again for a while, I may try synthetic again but at no higher than 40 weight-I think Amsoil makes a 10w-30. Something to think about!
  4. Thanks for the offer! I'm surprised that your 06 had a later letter than my 08. Are you the original owner? Did you actually see the stamped "G" on the basket? Just curious.
  5. Mine was replaced under warranty which Yamaha willingly did. I expected a "G" basket on my 2008, but had the "F". Yamaha suggests the "I" for customers sensitive to the whine which is characteristic of all the Royal Stars. They state that the "I" won't cure the whine, but throws it into a different pitch which might not be as offensive to our ears. It worked for me.
  6. When I checked the specs for the 2011 Venture (no more RSTD) the acceptable oils ran the whole gauntlet of ranges and it's the same engine as my 2008 RSTD. When the service manager called Yamaha for the basket change they recommended the 20w-50 Yamalube which is Dino. I know that I had no problems using the 10w-40 before I tried the synthetic and it just didn't work for me. I'm learning as I go!
  7. When I switched to Mobile1 20w-50 synthetic, I went from a whine (never had a chirp) to a scream. Dealer just switched my basket to an "I" and put me back on Yamaha lube 20w-50 (at my request) and I'm back to a gentle whine at a different pitch and almost no whine in 5th. I can actually hear my mufflers now. I had an "F" basket and according to Rick Butler I probably should have tried a "G" basket, but don't want to push my dealer too much. At the next oil change I'll probably go back to 10w-40, but no more synthetic for me.
  8. These http://www.getlovehandles.com/ bars should do the job and they will work for the wife as well. Not cheap but seem well made. If my wife rode more often I would have bought them.
  9. It's the clutch basket and the 50 weight oil. I had a gentle whine and changed to 20-50w synthetic and to me the whine turned into a scream. I'm having my basket changed to an "I" and think I'll go back to Dino. I should have left well enough alone unless the mileage begins to make it worse-I have 5K on my 2008 RSTD. Keep us in touch and I'll tell you how I do when my work is done.
  10. No they don't! If they do then you have a "chirp" and not a "whine".
  11. Thanks for the Video. I think with these Videos everyone will begin to understand what is meant by "whine". Now we need to hear a "chirp". My bike is now louder and slightly higher pitched than the video. No brag, just fact When my Bike was new, I would have raised Hell with the dealership if mine sounded like the video. Now that I've played with it, I'm kinda at their mercy, but time will tell. I'll do the "I" basket and experiment with the oil. I couldn't sell the Bike now if I wanted too (which I don't). However, I'll not add one more toy to it until the whine improves. I really think someone could hear it over the loud mufflers I installed. I don't believe any muffler would hide the whine because the noise comes from two different directions. The exhaust is behind you and the whine is in your face.
  12. When I pinned the Mobile tech down on the differences between Mobile 1 20w-50 and 4T 10w-40, he said no difference except viscosity. He said the HDs (V-twins) usually ran the 20w-50 and the rice-burners (my words) used the 4T. The reason he gave was that was "WHAT THE MANUALS SPECIFIED". My 2008 RSTD specifies either Yamalube 4, 10w-30, or 20w-40 (which I don't think Yamaha even sells anymore). His point was that the manual didn't go past the 40 as in 20w-40 and that's why I should use the 4T. Remember he said the oils were identical except for viscosity. So to see what time does for us I looked up the 2010 Venture specs (no 2010 RSTD) and they now specify: 10w-30, 10w-40, 10w-50, 15w-40, 20w-40, or 20w-50. Unless I'm mistaken the 2010 Venture has the same old engine that my 2008 has. I guess the 4T is worth trying but it doesn't make sense that the 40 would be quieter than the thicker 50 in the gear baskets, but I can sure understand why Dino oil might be quieter than synthetics. Even the difference in the Mobile and Rotella formulations could make a difference. It's a shame that it is us (the customer) instead of Yamaha that conducts these trial and error tests. Guess I've spouted off enough, but if I'm wrong in these assumptions feel free to let me know. PS: On second thought it's possible that Yamaha has conducted these tests and determined that nothing short of re-engineering would solve the "whine". I guess they might be telling us that if we don't like the whine then DON'T BUY these Bikes (looks like they might be phasing them out anyway)
  13. My service manager told me he was trying to make money for the dealership and warranty work didn't pay the way. I'm not sure how he wanted me to reply, but I appeared sympathetic and asked him again to order the "I" basket. He said he would. He's going on vacation so maybe his customer attitude might improve-he seems OK, but then I'm a tolerant person to a point. I frankly don't care what they lost last year unless they show me what they made in the good years. Being as they are made in Japan instead of the USA, perhaps the Japanese will bail them out like we did GM and Chrysler.
  14. I've got the same number except with -00 at the end. My service manager said he would order the "I" basket, but assured me that it would make no difference. I asked him if he had ever ridden mine and he said no. I decided to wait until the parts came in before telling him what I thought. Since I've gone to Mobile 1 20w-50 and plugged both AIS's, the whine has gotten 100% worse. I should have left well enough alone, but now I'll go all the way until I P*ss everyone off and either it gets fixed or I sell the bike. He's also agreed to change the oil to Mobile 1 4T, but after talking to Mobile I doubt that it will make a difference-probably should have stayed with the Dino oil I was using. Yamaha should make an effort to fix the problem with the money they save every year by not making any changes in the model.
  15. I incorrectly posted that my oil change was Mobile 1 20w-40 (no such animal). It was 20w-50. I just talked to a Mobile tech and he said I should have used 4T 20w-40. The 20w-50 (called V-Twin) is usually used on HD's or similar. Guess I'll go argue with the service mgr about changing the oil-Yamaha doesn't even specify a 50w oil. Have no idea if that contributed to the whine, but can't hurt to try.
  16. If so, then mine definitely needs checking out. It's much higher pitched and louder than the video. Before changing to synthetic, I had virtually no whine in 5th. I've noticed that if I have a slight down grade and can hold the throttle steady, the whine disappears. Is this the clutch basket? Is the I basket different from the clutch basket in my 2008 RSTD? Anyway to tell? Guess I could drain the oil (only 200 miles since change) and try the Mobile T, but wonder if I should run "sludge" to quiet it down. If the clutch and engine oil were separated my options would probably increase. How much success have members had in getting the clutch basket changed under warranty? Is there a TSB from Yamaha for this problem? Thanks for any replies!
  17. Just had my oil changed and went with synthetic (Mobile1 20-40). After 200 miles the whine is noticeably worse. I thought that the syn might actually help quiet the clutch basket (I assume that's where the whine originates?), but it seems the opposite has happened. Has this happened to anyone else? My new slip-ons don't begin to compensate for the increase in whine. Any ideas? Is my only choice to go back to Dino? Thanks!
  18. This is the one I bought www.utpr.com . I looked at Bakup, Mustang seats (had one on previous bike), and something else, but the Utopia gives you a lot of bang for your buck. Don't see how it could get much better. Good luck! PS Super easy install-seems that the Bakup was more complicated.
  19. Is that the reason my dealer's been giving me a can for birthdays and any other occasion that comes up? Maybe they are just getting rid of the 'Honda" marked stuff-still works good!
  20. I wouldn't have thought that the silicone could take the heat? If you plug the exhaust, and I assume one at a time, are you listening for the leak (my hearing's not great) or do you spray something?
  21. I've sync'd the carbs, plugged both the AIS's, and now changed the exhaust with slip-ons. Still have afterburn pops on decel. The slip-ons went well past the split ends on the exhaust before clamping. Any chance the splits in the sip-ons have to be completely covered with clamps? What else do I need to do to stop (slow down) the pops on decel? Thanks for any help!
  22. Along with the guy that designed the water saving shower head and the oriental that designed the constant 4 second beep to let you know that you were out of paper in your fax machine!
  23. This works for me! When you've arrived at your destination, just replace your CB with a cold one. Took a lot of engineering to work this out and I really needed a cold one after solving this problem!
  24. Good looking bike-where are the 36" fishtails?
  25. I ordered the muffler support clamps today. Better safe than sorry. Thanks for the input!
