  1. that was here at the Yamaha dealership in Tiverton Ontario 2 years ago..... bugger to corner I imagine
  2. careful when you send him parts ,get him to pay up front..... no more needs to be said
  3. how do i change my email contact info?
  4. if you were closer I would help, I have had my 88 and 87 apart a few times, once all the plastic is gone, the bike doesn't look so intimidating. the secret is to get baggies each time you take a part off and tie the hardware to the piece you just took off, or back in the holes once the parts are off, that way you don't scratch your head later as to where they go.if you hit the archives of this forum.... you get great advice. good luck
  5. I needed some bits and pieces , and where I live, I had a hard time finding them ( besides the dealer), so my thinking that I will keep the 87 around for parts ( even though it ran great, when I tried it out for 2 days), until I can't hold the big bike up anymore and then part it out for others, here in Canada.......all the parts on Ebay seem to be in the states...... this way I have my own........................ but already looking for a deal on a third one, that way I can make 2 out of 3, and STILL have parts. as you say its addictive. JM
  6. I liked the first one so much ,I bought a second, my first "big" bike was the 88 VR, now just bought a 87 VR...... we will call it "HIS" and "HERS"....... except HER doesn't drive....oops... I guess I'll keep it around for a spare..... already have it stripped down to the frame and motor, rest in tupperware bins waiting for a "rainy day"...... the 87 is on the right
  7. I was second guessing myself, because this is the first time I have been near this component since I owned the bike ( 2 years now), and the "as-found" position was with the top of the wording located at the 11 o'clock position, but the manual said that was the drain position, that's why I was confused....... it will also explain why I have been have overheating problems !!!!!!! what other little secrets should I learn about this "Stallion of a ride" ? don't get me wrong, I love it more than any other bike I've owned but there a certain quirks you have to get to know, and that is where the valued sharing on this site comes in......... thanks to all for the help in the present and future....JOHN
  8. WOW i didn't realize there was such contraversy over this subject, but I prefer to have control over which set of brakes gets applied, not some proportioner. I can see and feel the road conditions...... not some mechanical device. I was hoping it would have been as simple as putting a splitter from the other side of the front brake and plugging/capping the existing feed to the right side front......Earl has kindly offered advice on a change over that works, and I will look at any other ideas out there......I am mechanically inclined and will be equally confused as to which has the best merits....... bottom line.... I have slid the front end out from under me twice at very low speeds 2MPH or less, in the first 3 months I owned the bike, and never knew why until I redid the brakes last winter ( the first winter I owned and did maintenence). In Canada , with riding as early as we can...... we get into sand from the winter still being on the road, and late fall, we have the wet leaves on the road to contend with...AGAIN, I want to control the braking Thanks again john
  9. this is the first big bike I've owned and last year when I changed the brake pads I discovered the the back brake is linked to the front left brake, and the front right side is tied to antidive ???, my question is this " is it possible to interchange the brake lines ,so that the antidive portion is tied to the front, and that the 2 front brakes are together?" I do not like the front and back tied together, because when I pull into my driveway, I am on gravel and the front slides out from under me, if I come in too fast !! same on corners on gravel roads........ don't worry, I'll be easy on the front brakes, if I make the change. on smaller bikes I never used the fronts at all.
  10. I am waiting for a 40'F day, so I can ride again, and wouldn't care if it was raining....... I just don't think if we had a 40'F day, I could not get up the driveway covered in snow.
  11. been looking for my leak for a year now and found it at the drain valve, I changed the "O" ring and doesn't leak anymore,,,,,,,, but which way should that valve be oriented for normal driving. when I snapped it in, I put the hole in the valve in the "up" position, but looking at the schematics in the manual, I may be wrong, please advise me
  12. could arrange one on my farm, 15 minutes south of Owen Sound ,Ontario, Canada for the Canadian troopers, can smell the hotdogs at the campfire already JOHN M:farmer:
  13. I have a spare one but it is scratched up a bit from plier marks, still interested? PM me
  14. vent, mid cowell right side,3"x9" approx, right side top plastic pieces around the air compressor unit, 2 pieces, and a 4 " chrome add on under the left side mirror ( just glued on)
  15. http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/menu-eng.html here is the canadian customs site........ note the section that if all the paperwork is not correct at the border, and give 72 hrs advance notice, the possibility of them crushing it at your expense while you watch, would be a deterrant to me........ but then again...... people get it done , so there must be a way.......rules got tight last year JOHN
  16. been looking for the vent on mid cowell, just below leather pouch at the right side as you sit on the bike....... the same one that blew off on my way to Kitchener rally......I am talking to a guy with a parts bike..... does the one from an 84 fit on the 88"s? JOHN
  17. guess I was just frustrated for needing one piece to restore the bike to its full glory again...... just seems odd that the SAME part from the same supplier keeps showing up:8:
  18. is it just me or....... do items that you are interested in skyrocket in price, to an unreasonable place??? and when you set a limit for a part, you always lose it.......AND LO-AND-BEHOLD......the EXACT item re-appears on ebay, with the same scratch, same tablecoth back drop.... time and time again??? I think the used parts dealers have their employees bid up the prices under fakes aliases and hold US ransom for the parts, then "pad" their stats with......fast service COLLUSION I think so...... its big business..... and we are the losers.........if only ALL the venture owners would agree on what is reasonable to pay for every part on a bike, and no-one bid higher than that....... sooner, than later the prices would plummit. THERE I FEEL BETTER JOHN:draming:
  19. you'll be passing right by my house on HWY #6 if I know the details, I can be your tourguide and pitstop near Chatsworth Ontario, and take you up to the ferry, maybe even take you the cut-off to Elliot lake( on the other side) where my sister lives...... need an excuse to see her anyway, and keep my name handy if you need help locally, leave me a private message if you want, and when it gets closer, we can finalize things, or if you want tourist info.... I'll stop by the tourism office and mail it to you JOHN MUSTERS PS they give you ropes to tie your bike down on the ferry, but I always carry ratchet straps as well:grandpa:
  20. was the wife on the back ??? just kidding:smile5:
  21. gents.... does anyone have a spare vent 3"X7" approx, that goes by your knee under the little leather pouch,( right side, 88 VR)..... mine blew off on the highway, on my way to the Kitchener rally, and have not had the time to find one yet.... so I thought I would try this first... thanks in advance JOHN
  22. looking for the air grill on the right side, under the leather pouch on an 88 VR, about 3"X7" ,I'm Guessing......... mine blew off on the way to the Kitchener Rally...... bummer.... any help locating one would be appreciated..... if in Ontario Canada, I will ride to come and pick it up...............thanks JOHN
  23. thanks for everything...... when riding season is over ( OCTOBER or so ), will the pictures from the covered bridge be available ??? john and nacy, and the white poodle:fingers-crossed-emo
  24. just a thank you to all at the Rally in Kitchener, my first...... hope it didn't show too much..... riding in formation!!! been riding for 40 years, and because of the remote location, usually alone or with 3 or 4 other riders..... never 60 bikes ( or there abouts). want to thank the organizers, and hope to see some of you again at the next one, the wife and I ( and the white Poodle) do not do well on long rides, but with enough notice ,we can arrange holidays and do it in 2 days or so.......BIKER JOHN51 or GRUMPY_BEAR
  25. this one is puzzling me, since I changed to a new battery, my temperature sensor is acting erratic, I think it's electrical, poor ground maybe????,.... my old battery was always demanding a 16V charge, but the new battery, at idle is around 13V, at that time the temp indicator goes off-scale low ( reads less than zero), as soon as I rev up, it jumps to 1/3 scale, where you would expect it to be....... as soon as you come to rest it goes low again, and from time to time it jumps around 1/8" while riding,....I checked the manual, and it gives the location of the temperature sending unit..... can anyone tell me where the physical location to the ground is ???? JOHN ( or any other thoughts on the subject:confused24:
