  1. Thank you all for your help and hints on bike maintenance, I have driven bikes since I was 16 yrs old and always did my own maintenance, with my father's help, when I was only knee-high. WHEN I bought the VR88 about 16 months ago, it looked so big and intimidating to do any work on it, I almost considered giving to the local shop for a complete fluid change out, brakes, etc......... but once you get all that "plastic" off, it's just like any bike.................it is ugly though with no fairings. 80 some hours later it is back together....... the deep cleaning of all the parts that were inaccessable before took the longest.......now ready for some freaking SPRING weather........ and planning a summer run from Ont canada to the east coast of canada, and down through the eastern states and back into Canada..... may see you on the road then..........and if you need help when in my area..... I feel a lot more confident, in helping doing the repairs if needed.... cheers JOHN:cool10:
  2. Black owl..... I just bought one of these hitches..... plan to do it this winter.... Am I right in assuming you drill right through the nylon, steel center bar stock and back out the other side???? I was wondering if the turning mechanism would be jammed if I dilled right through !!!
  3. 86er and Marcarl... thanks for the replys, I have lots of hockey pucks for shims of needed, and glad to hear that I won't crush anything, now just waiting for the snow to fly ( and stay) just so I do not miss that last riding opportunity JOHN
  4. thanks for the replies..... I guess I should have included the type of bike...... silly me ( or blame the night shifts) 1988 VR... I am assuming that there is no special precautions or concerns about the crushing effect on the mufflers or the cross piece underneath?? you see this is my first "heavy" bike, and it took 40 riding years to get in the saddle of one, (other monetary priorities) and would rather ask questions 2X up front, than have an oopsy. STILL HOPING FOR "INDIAN SUMMER" AS THEY CALL IT UP HERE, TO GET THE LAST BIT OF RIDING IN.... KEEP YOU FINGERS CROSSED
  5. gents..... and ladies, where is the center of gravity point for lifting and changing out the 2 tires? and any precautions as to shimming, so that I do not damage anything. I still plan to "hang" it from the celing of the garage.....I have a chainfall set up, but plan to use that for extra security only......I don't want my baby to FALL...:no-no-no:............thanks in advance JOHN
  6. some on this site have suggested RAINX, but I had no luck with it..... to solve the problem, I cut 2" off the top, so I can look over, issue gone, and it hasn't changed the aerodynamics of the bike...... my thoughts only. JOHN
  7. mine 88 VR ( bought used) came with a light in the center luggage , it is on a switch as you open the lid...... if you wanted to put lights in the side luggage bags, use LED's , they made accent ones, 3 in a molded case, and wiring them into the wire from the center luggage , and put a 2 pole connector on it...... the only decision then is wether to put a switch on it or just open the center luggage to light all 3 compartments...... just my thought, use a flashlight myself..... but you got me thinking...... JOHN
  8. thanks for the info.... working my way through it.... don't know if me or the printer will give up first..... JOHN
  9. besides the dealer, is there a suggested place to buy a service manual for an 88 VR, I am near OWEN SOUND Ontario Canada......... anybody have a spare copy?, I figure I will do a preventive maintenance this winter in preparation for a trip to the east coast of canada in late spring/early summer thanks as always in advance
  10. gents... I just installed a trailer light converter kit on my 1988 Venture Royale.... i bought the relay box at a discount auto supply place for $20.00, I did see them at Canadian Tire for about $35.00 .the converter is POWERPATH #784651 made by cooper automotive. then I completed the installation with a 4 pole socket from NAPA #82-1020B and matching plug # 82-1021B. the module is small 2"X3"X3/4", and the whole thing is installed in the inside corner of my left saddle bag, the wiring that I needed to access is easily reached under the seat.... I can send you pictures and more detail if needed... johnmusters@hurontel.on.ca bikerjohn51
