looking at 85 have ?'s
KarlS replied to englishwheeler's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I got my 83 radio cut on and off and got same E code. Found out problem was broken contact in ign switch. Fixed switch and all was good. Mine also missed and popped, checked diaphragms and found one had came apart due to stuck slide. freed up the slide, put diaphragm back together and all was good. -
Went riding with a friend who has a 1500 wing Wednesday and my new to me 83 venture amazed me again. Was merging onto the e-way with my friend right behind me and as I got on the e-way I gave it just a little more throttle and BOOM I was gone. I guess the best way to describe it, it was like opening up a nitrous bottle at 70mph. When we got off the e-way and stopped my friend looks at me and asks, what was that? I'm right with you and then you were just gone. Well on the way back I'm doing about 60 and decide to slowly roll on the throttle and see what it does. Just like before I get to "the sweet spot" and bam shes gone. Revs jumps up, massive power, and shes just flying. Is this how all these 1st gens run? Still grinning ear to ear just thinking about it.

I agree 100%. I had one deleted in jokes and humor and have no idea why when compared to what I have seen before and after.

I had a wonderful ride, then the alarm went off and I woke up. Looked outside to see the snow falling, the wind blowing and the van covered with 4" of snow. Turned on the news and we have a winter storm warning until 8:00 pm tonight. Can't wait until tonight so I can go back to sleep and ride again. Key West sounds like a nice ride.
-
We are supposed to get 3-5+ inches tonight! Sunny and 37 now and if it hits 40 I'm going riding. I don't think it will ever warm up. Moving south getting closer and closer. 54 years of snow is enough.

15 minutes after he sells a set he puts another set on e-bay. Been watching them for awhile now just to see how high they go. They keep selling.

Looks like my first step will be to get bike warmed up then just let it run to see if fan comes on and then see where on temp gauge it come on at. If it don't come on then check fan itself. with Michigan weather looks like might be Tuesday before it warms up again. No garage at my house just an awning to work under.

123 mile ride. First off I'm amazed that this bike is so unbelievably comfortable, I was worried about this because of my bad back and last bike was 2003 GL1800 that I had to sell in July of 2007. Ride was rough at first, felt every bump. I pulled over and lowered air pressure from 13psi in front to 6psi and 35psi in rear to 25psi. That did the trick. Plenty of power. At 70mph gave it gas and it just takes off. Ran smooth. 2nd gear good. Everything seemed to work fine. After warming up the idle wanted to all of a sudden jump up to 3 grand but a twist of throttle would bring it down. Think it might have something to do with a whole can of sea foam in it because it got better on the next tank. QUESTION 1. I got 36.5 mile per gallon, is this good or bad? and what size gas tank do I have? I had to stop at one point for about 4-5 minutes and the bike was just idling, the temp went up just into the red. It was 50 degrees out. QUESTION 2. Does the cooling fan run all the time or is it controlled by a temp sensor? I have not yet checked coolant level after ride but it was full when I left. The turn signals seem to self cancel in a short amount of time. When at a light to make left hand turns they would cancel before the light would change. Is this normal? Still have to put new brake pads on and find an exhaust leak I have somewhere but all in all I LIKE It!!!!! Bad weather moving in and looks like it will be Tuesday before able to ride again. Very Very pleased.

Will know more tomorrow. In the morning getting the insurance and plate. So far just rode it home from friends house where we were working on it. But in the 5 mile ride to my house it ran great.
-
Will do. I like riding Lansing Rd instead of I-69. I'm a back roads rider and only ride x-ways when I have to get somewhere fast.

Thanks for the info. 3 of us are leaving June 12th.

I did a 27 day 23 state trip and it was not hard to find motels under $50.00 a night. If you have any planned stops and know what night you will be there try what I did. I Googled the town and state, brought up a list of motels, called them to get prices. Don't be afraid to offer them less then what they are asking, you will be suprised how many will take it exspeically during the week days. And don't forget your AARP card.

The gas station/party store on the SW corner just got robbed and set on fire 3 days ago. But that's Flint, every day. And people wonder why I can't wait to move.

After drive shaft, rear drive, brake, front fork springs, and wiring problems IT'S DONE. Went down the road today and ran so well I ALMOST forgot how cold it was. Still will install new brake pads and some chrome I bought but looks like it's ready to ride. Thanks for all the help everyone made repairs much faster.

Back to the brakes
KarlS replied to KarlS's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That did it, re-cleaning master cylinder took care of the brakes locking up. I think now that they are working I'm changing all the pads because I really smoked them a few times getting them working. Tomorrow pulling CMU to see if I can get the headlight working. Close to riding time. THANKS for all the help. -

I agree the sites you listed says they are not the same and offer proof. I stand corrected. -

MegaMax Gel Battery

AGM and jel batteries are the exact same thing. http://www.ebatteriestogo.com/Motorcycle_Batteries.htm. This web site will explain that it's different name for the same battery. If you go to any battery web site and e-mail them to ask what the difference is they will tell you they are the same. When "jel" deep cycle batteries first came out around 1985 they were different then they are now. The AGM was a improved type of jel battery and all AGM or jel batteries now are the same. I used to sell the jel batteries when they first came out and a lot of them came back until they improved to what they are now. Mostly because at that time it took a better charging system to keep them up to full charge. They came out in deep cycle first for marine use because of all the bouncing a boat battery takes. They last much longer and will take a beating. Not trying to cause trouble, just passing along what I know. -

Back to the brakes

I have free play in brake pedal. I did not use a rebuild kit when master was cleaned before. I'll see if I can find a rebuild kit and take this thing apart again. Brakes and headlight are the last things left to do and then it's road ready. Headlight just quit working, I've been reading the posts about 1st gen headlight problems and will try the tests and fixes. Thanks for the in put. -
A month ago I posted how after bleeding brakes on the 83 Venture the brakes locked up on the test drive and had no play in pedal. The bike is at a friends and he just got back from 3 weeks in Florida so I got to work on it for the first time today. First I adjusted the brakes so I had free play in the pedal. Took for test drive and after using the brakes twice the rear and left front locked up again. Took bleeder wrench so cracked rear caliper bleeder, released pressure and didn't touch brakes until I got back. Two or three hits on the brakes and locked up again. Now this time took a small hammer and tapped on master and brakes released somewhat. Now the master was already taken apart and cleaned. So I believe the problem is with master cylinder. So the questions are. Should the master be talking apart and cleaned again or should I look for another master cylinder? And is it agreed the Master cylinder is the most likely reason for the lock ups? Thank You.

On the National Park Service web site the passes are good for any US or State parks that are run by the following: National Park Service, US Dept of Agriculture, Forest Services, Fish and Wildlife service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation. Regular price $80.00. Seniors $10.00. Permanent Disabilities Free. They have a map that you can click on state by state to show whats included and where they are located. Even good for senic highways that charge to drive on them. And you can get the passes on line also.

Two tears ago I was on my 2003 GL1800 I had and needed to stop at the bank. Didn't want to go in so waited in the very busy drive thru. When it was my turn to to pull up to the space in front of the tube I saw that the pavment had a slight slant to the right. Didn't think nothing of it but what I didn't see was where a car had set there leaking fluid. Came to a stop, put my feet down and right foot hit fluid and slipped out from under me. So with the bike laying on the crash bars I put the kickstand down, went around to the right side of the bike and picked it up. But with the slant and the aftermarket chrome kickstand I had the bike would not stay upright on the stand. I tried to push the bike forward but because of the fluid I'm now standing in I couldn't get traction to push a 900lb bike. Thanks to another biker who jumped out of his car we pushed the bike to a level spot. I got on and rode to another bank.
