  1. Was out there for the rally last week and did the Vanocker Canyon Road ride. It is a nice little ride. We also enjoyed the Iron Mountain Road ride. It was our first time out there during the rally and probably our last. Too many bikes and too many kooks. We heard 800,000 people in the area with 9 reported deaths. We were reminded on more then one occasion just how vulnerable we are on the bike when we were directed around recent wrecks just as the lifeflight helo's took away the victim while his buddies were sitting in disbelief on the shoulder.
  2. I tell you, I went ahead and replaced the OEM filters with K&N replacements and I have to say that it did make a noticeable difference. While I can sense a bit of a performance increase, it's my mileage that has really improved. Prior to the K&N's I would always get 40 MPG, even when riding two up. Since the swap out my mileage has gone up to as high as 48 MPG with an average of around 44 MPG. This past weekend we rode two up for two straight days and averaged 45.5 MPG. I picked up the set of filters for under $70 delivered online at kensautowholesale.com without any problems.
  3. I see from your photo that the windshield and passenger back rest are both absent. These are the quick release parts that make the bike a "convertible" but also the parts that you're gonna want. Hopefully the previous owner didn't keep them.
  4. I bought a bakup brand backrest and it is by far the best back rest I have ever enjoyed. At 6'2" I know how important a decent back rest is so I spent the extra $$$.
  5. With 14+ inches of snow on the ground I can tell you that the bike is officially tucked away for a long winters sleep. Thanks to all of your great feedback I will hold off pulling the carbs myself and try some of your suggestions. I bought the 3 year old bike last spring with just over 900 miles on it from a Suzy dealer. I was told that they had gone through the carbs and honestly I do not recall the problem until I took the bike in for a warranty issue and had them synch the carbs and set the idle speed. That's why I had another dealer double-check the synch again. I will try the sea foam recommendations and it wouldn't hurt to change the plugs as well. Sounds like maybe the idle speed might be set a little low as well. Thanks for the responses!
  6. When I am accelerating from a complete stop my bike hesitates when I release the clutch. The only way I can prevent this is to rev the engine a bit before I release the clutch. I have had the carbs synched by two different dealers with the same end result. One dealer has suggested that the carbs are dirty and they will gladly pull and clean them for $340. I told him that I can't believe a 3 year old bike with only 7500 miles needs the carbs cleaned. Scott 06 RSTD
  7. We just completed riding the Great River Road along the Mississippi River from La Crosse, Wisconsin to Memphis, Tennessee. We followed the river down the west side and returned following the river's east side. All said we rode about 1900 miles and visited 9 of the 10 states that border the mighty Mississippi over 7 days with 2 days spent seeing the sights in Memphis. Our longest ride was a couple of 400 mile days. Besides the beautiful scenery that abounds on both sides of the river we enjoyed stops in many of the little (and big) river towns along the way. We found it interesting how much the cultures change as you head south. This trip was a dream of my wifes ever since she watched Feasting on Asphalt - The River Run on the Food Network. She even bought the book to make sure we hit a few of the host's (Alton Brown) favorite river stops. If you decide to make this ride I stongly recommend using a GPS that will allow you to preload routes as the roads change often if you truly want to follow the river as close as you can. I used a Garmin product that allowed me to create the routes on my PC and then load them into the GPS. Happy Trails!
  8. I just ordered a set of the longhorn offsets last week for my '06 RSTD. Being the thrifty shopper that I am I always try and make sure I get the best price available. My wife has a couple of other phrases she uses instead of thrifty but you get the point. Anyhow, I was able to get them delivered to my door for a hundred bucks from A & B Xtreme out of Ohio. You can contact them at 740-676-2900.
  9. I opened up the end of the Kuryakyn grips enough so the end weights just fit. I found that a unibit and a dremel tool were the perfect combination for this task and that a 6 x 80 mm socket head screw was just the right length to attach the end weights. Now my problem is that the throttle sticks unless I back out the screw to the point where the end weight is no longer secure. How do I get around this problem? Scott
  10. After having purchased one of the "garage built" E-Bay backrests for my C90 Boulevard, I decided that my back was worth the extra money so I put a Bakup backrest on my RSTD. I can honestly say that it was well worth the extra $$$ and it will take many miles off my back on the long distance hauls. Haven't seen much written about the Bakup brand here in the forums so I figured I would throw my 2 cents out there.
  11. You won't find a more adventurous and scenic ride then the Lake Superior Circle Tour. I did it in 2007 with a group of 5 other bikers (affectionately known as the Mild Hogs) and had a blast. This 1800 mile ride will take you all the way around the world largest fresh-water lake following the picturesque shoreline through Minnesota, Ontario, Michigan, and Wisconsin. We took seven days to truly enjoy the scenery but if you pushed it a bit you could shorten the ride. There's even a website dedicated to this ride. Once you complete the ride you can order a Circle Tour pin for your leather. http://www.great-lakes.net/tourism/circletour/superior/ Here's a link to the photos from our Circle Tour ride on the Mild Hogs website: http://www.ib4e.org/mildhogs2007.html My favorite Circle Tour stops: Split Rock Lighthouse Grand Marais (Oly & Svens for pizza) Sleeping Giant Provincial Park (spend a whole day visiting this beautiful park east of Thunder Bay) White River, ON (birthplace of Winnie-the-Pooh, you can laugh but you'll stop for a photo) Wawa, ON (cute little Canadian town) Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum (visit the Edmund Fitzgerald display) As a sidenote, I rode all five great lakes in 2008 from SE Minnesota to Niagra Falls and back and found the Circle Tour ride much prettier.
