  1. Please describe snow to me. I don't think I know what it looks like. When its cold enough to snow here the sun is out all bright and shiny. Then the rain moves in and the temp. goes up and it rains and rains and rains. Then when it stops raining the sun comes out and it gets cold again. We will finish this year with the second highest surplus of rain in Georgia history. You would think that with all that rain we would have some snow but noooooo. The good news is I rode my bike today!
  2. Just an update. The Seafoam seems to be doing the job. The more I run it the easier it is getting to start. It still has a ways to go but I'm a lot closer than I was. I sprayed the choke and idle adjustment knob and worked both back and forth and they are freeing up. They are still a little stiff but a lot better than they were. Sunday is still on for taking the carb off and cleaning it real good. We are going to change the four pilot jets and change the oil and filter along with plugging the AIS system. I'll keep you updated.
  3. I just checked cyclepartswarehouse.com and http://partshark.com/ with http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/. The local Yamaha dealer wanted $16.63 for a part, http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/ had the same part for $8.30, http://partshark.com/ had the same part for $8.06 and cyclepartswarehouse.com had the part for $7.84. Now saying all that it is obvious who has the better price. Now I have run into this situation before where someone had as good a price or better than http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/ but when you get a price quote on shipping and handling http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/ was a lot cheaper not a little but a lot cheaper. They do not jack up there shipping charges by adding a handling charge. Now I have never ordered from the other two parts suppliers mentioned here so I can not say which one has the best shipping prices BUT... When I told my local ripoff Yamaha dealer I could get them same part for half the price they told me to make a copy of the cart with the parts listed with the price and they would match it. Now the tax on a $45 order is a lot cheaper than anybodies shipping charge unless you can get free shipping.
  4. I have a 2006 Road Star and a 2000 MM Venture and they both take a little choking but not much. This one takes an awful lot. It just seems to me to be to much difference in the way this one acts as apposed to the other two bikes. I put about 60 miles on it today and the can of Seafoam I put in the tank definitely is making a difference. I'm going to spray the idle screw and choke with carb cleaner tomorrow and see how much that helps. The saddlebag latches would not hardly open until I greased them up and now they work fine. I tried the cruise control today and it didn't work. I suspect it has never been used so I need to check and make sure everythink is greased up and moving freely and the electrical connections are making good contact. I feel that the cruise control is like everything else in that it is just gummed up. The throttle is a little slow returning when you release the throttle. There again I think it just needs a little oil and some cleaning.
  5. I'm going to change the plugs and pull the carbs this Sunday. This bike you have to leave on full choke for about 5 minutes then 1/2 choke for probably another 5 minutes. The idle adjusting screw is starting to work but very slow to respond and the choke is difficult to push in and out son I think at the very least it needs a good cleaning.
  6. I'm not familiar with 44k but I put a can of Seafoam in and it seams to have helped a little. I cranked it up today and let it idle about 20 minutes. I was going to ride the bike today but I checked the air in the tires and the front had 12 lbs and the rear had 10 lbs of air in it. As I was putting air in the tires I noticed that the rear sidewall was sliced so I didn't go for the ride but Idid notice an improvement in the idling. I believe this bike is so gummed up that the idle screw just barely works. The saddlebags will not hardly open because the latches have not been used. Greased the latches and the latches work fine now. I think the idle adjustment is the same way. You turn the adjustment and nothing happens and then after a delay the engine rpm's change. Ralph and I are going to take the carbs off this Sunday and clean them good.
  7. I put a whole can of SeaFoam in yesterday. It's early so I don't know if that helped or not. After I run this tank dry I'll add 1/2 can a few more times and see what happens.
  8. He was trying to warm it up when I got there and he told me it had been warming up for 10 minutes and it has always been that way. So I new it was temper mental before I bought it. I figure that if it has only 4,550 miles on it in 8 years the carbs may be gummed up but I don't know enough about gummed up carbs to know if it can run fine at highway speeds and have trouble warming up. It seems to me that gummed up carbs would effect all levels of performance not just starting but what do I know?
  9. 1) If he was dumb enough to pay that then he is looking for someone even dumber than him to buy it. 2) He is selling a hard to find Black Cherry. A friend just bought one 8 months ago with everything he has on his bike except the fringe on the levels except it had 9000 miles on it and he paid $9000. I guess one is born every minute? Lots of luck.
  10. Right back at ya Big Tom. Merry Christmas.
  11. Well it was definitely in the 30's here this morning but I think it was warmer than that when I picked it up. Probably in the 40's that day.
  12. Thanks PastorPaul I didn't even think of that. I'll check tomorrow.
  13. I've checked the post and have not been able to find a tread about this problem. I just bought a 2001 with 4,550 miles on it. When I arrived the previous owner was warming up the Venture. He said it was cold natured and took awhile to warm up. He said he usually would just ride with the choke on until it warmed up. My 2000 Venture if you do have to pull out the choke you just pull it out for a few seconds and then push the choke in and it is fine. This 2001 you have to leave the choke out for 5 minutes or more before you can push it in or the Venture will die. I test drove the Venture before I bought it and it flies on the highway. It runs very strong and smooth. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be the problem? The Venture still has the original tires on it so I'm going to assume it has the original plugs. I'm going to put new plugs in it but I would think that if the plugs had anything to do with it that it would not run so strong or smooth on the highway. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Harry:bang head:
  14. Man that is great gas mileage. Around here I get about 42 mpg combination of all driving. In S.D. me and another guy with a Venture (2000 and 2006) both got 30 mpg when we got above 80 (our speedo) which is incorrect as is the odometer. The Ultra Classic (Screaming Eagle 103 ci) got about 37 mpg. The Ultra Classic as you said has a smaller tank and he told us he needed to fill up at about 170 miles. Well that didn't happen out west and we often went 200 miles between fill ups and once when we got stuck without a filling station we went 225 miles and yes even the Ultra Classic. I think the Ultra Classic riders are afraid of running to low on fuel so they don't push it (because of the fuel injection). But as you can see if they have no other choice they can get over 200 miles on a tank.
  15. Now I'm confused:think::think: I took a trip last July and there were 3 of us 2 Ventures (a 2000 and a 2006) and a 2007 Ultra Classic Screaming Eagle. In S.D. going west on the interstate 80 to 85 MPH both Ventures got about 30 MPG while the HD got about 37 MPG. This was not an isolated instance but at every gas stop day after day.:puzzled:
  16. It was a great M&E and a wonderful surprise to see so many of them in one place. Easy to get to and find. Right off I-20 east of Atlanta, GA about 1 hour in Madison. Well worth the ride and you can't beat the admission price. $5 donation to the local animal shelter and your in.
  17. I wish I had read about the shifter bolt before I took my trip out west. I was two days from home and I got off the interstate to gas up and I started to downshift and the shifter was not there, I looked down to see the shifter just flopping around. On top of that I had taken a wrong turn and had to make a u-turn. All I can say is it is possible to make a u-turn in fifth gear on a fully loaded 2nd Gen Venture.
  18. I have a friend who's is install on the wrong (right) side. Those geniuses at Yamaha have a habit of installing those plates and the antenna's backwards. As for the seat nuts. I used a 1/4" drive ratchet wit a 10mm deep dish socket. I sent one of my seats to the Butt Butler and he sent it back with the knurled plastic washers that are pressed onto the 10mm nuts and they work great. He sells them in the classified section and well worth the price.
  19. I tried to send this yesterday and could not get it to work. I wanted to send it before today but the computer would not cooperate. Although we have never met and probably will never meet I just wanted you to know my heart goes out to you hand your family. You are part of this family and this is a great family full of caring and comforting people. We all hope you and your family get through this knowing we all are praying for you. God bless. Harry
  20. One thing HD has that Yamaha doesn't have is competent mechanics in my opinion. Everything they work on is HD. Yamaha dealers on the other hand is totally different. The machanic may be working on two or three bikes at the same time or one after the other and one is a Yamaha and one is a Kaw, and one is a Suzuki. I don't take mine to the dealer but mine is out of warrenty (thank goodness). If I had to take it in for warrenty work. A friend had new tires put on by the dealer and the mounted it so that it ran in the wrong direction. I don't have any expierence working on motorcycles but with the help of VentureRiders I have change the rear valve cover gasket, installed passing lights the way VentureRiders suggest, and several other things. I chane my own oil and filter and save about $50.
  21. Looks like HD is either overproducing or not selling and the others are underproducing.
  22. I dropped mine on the down hill side once. I had backed out of a parking spot and turned the bike 90% right as I stopped I put out my left foot but it didn't touch the ground and over I went. I have the Ride like a Pro video and tried to pick her up by squatting down and grabbing as low as I could with my back up against the seat hand just start walking backwards just like the video showed. Nothing. Tried 3 or 4 times and the bike did not even budge. So out of desperation I turned facing the bike grabbed the left grip with my left hand and grabbed the rear passenger hand rest with my right hand and pushed and it stood right up. Go figure. Try these people on ebay they may have the part. you may be able to call if you don't see the part in there ebay store. pinwall_cycle_parts
  23. As promised email sent.
  24. I had the same thing happen with my Road Star with the Brickstone tires. Changed tires and the sound went away.
  25. Hi Mike as you know my shock failed because you sold me the replacement shock that Yamaha would not cover. When I get home tonight I'll send you my vin #. Harry:thumbsup2:
