  1. I see in a couple of posts that some people are very adament about not using DOT5 brake fluid. I have been using it for well over a year on the RSV in the clutch and front and rear brakes as well as in the front a rear brakes on my 1997 Honda Shadow ACE for about 4 1/2 years. I have had no problems, leaks, loss of brake strength or anything to indicate this is the wrong stuff. I do know that you need to be careful and not mix any different types. Please explain why you feel that this is so wrong. If Im headed for trouble I would like to fix it before but it should have happened already if it was.
  2. I always wondered this. There is one light in perticular the it happens at. Is this indeed Federal law or does it pertain to NY state also. Im just waiting to get pulled over for just this thing!
  3. when you get it ready to put it up on the lift make sure you check the threads on the lift adapters here. You cant just use the flat lift without adapters and make your own, its much cheaper
  4. Naaa, wait till you have more time and maybe wait for winter. It is only noise. Nothing being hurt and if it hasnt been done its been that way for a long time with a 97. It is not gonna hurt anything. Greasing the Rear Drive Splines and greasing the Hub Pins on the RSV By Tartan Terror First thing you will need to do is raise the bike on a lift and remove the rear tire. For these operations look for the instructions in other articles in this tech area. After you have the wheel removed lay your rear tire flat on the ground or on a surface that you can work on it with the spline side facing up (Looks like a gear). I removed the dust shield (Rubber ring around the base of the gear) but it is not necessary unless you want to clean everything thoroughly. Wipe around the top edge of the gear clean and you will find a snap ring. Look carefully because it is hard to miss. Use a pair of snap ring pliers that open to remove the ring and lift it off or gently grab it with a pair of pliers being careful not to stretch the ring. If you do not remove this ring you will be unable to remove the pins from the hub (I know this Cuz this dummy tried to do it!) After you have removed the ring pull on the gear and the pins should slide out. Once you have removed the pins clean off any rust on the pins with a piece of scotch brite so that they are smooth. Generously apply grease to the pins. I used lithium based grease but any good water proof grease will do. Below you will see a picture showing the pins, Snap ring, scotch brite pad, and dust boot ring. Reinsert the pins into the bushings and replace snap ring. Once again be careful not to stretch out the ring as it needs to fit tightly to keep it in the groove. If you removed the dust boot also replace that and make sure it is properly seated. Apply grease to the splines on the hub. And also on the splines in the differential. It will squeeze out any extra grease then you lift the wheel back up and slide the hub splines into the differential splines but here is where most of the noise is coming from. It’s as easy as that. Like I said before refer to the other articles in this section to reinstall the rear wheel. Now Get out and Ride it like you stole it!!!
  5. On the steel braided hoses I use nothing but. The thing I like about them is that the lever and pedal are much firmer. On rubber hoses when you squeeze they expand a little and kind of loose a little of the force. Because of the Steel braid the Steelbraid hoses dont stretch the same and it is more a positive feel. I use Dot 5 fluid in mine as it is silicone based and wont absorb as much water as well as not hurt the paint if you spill it. i have this done to both my bikes thought opinions will differ. I also did the clutch like too.
  6. Which ones do you use and do you like them?
  7. I use the Amsoil Synthetic oil 10w-40 (Motorcycle Specific) I have used others and just feel the bike runs smoother as well as researching all the data and checking ratings. I have used Amsoil in all my vehicles including truck and all the drivetrain in it.
  8. Here in the Northeast it gets pretty cold but not always snow. I want to be able to ride all season as long as the roads are clear. What im looking for is a good quality garment. Gloves and vest or jacket liner. I want to be able to connect the gloves to the vest or liner or use the gloves alone. Last but not least I want to be able to adjust the temp so I dont bake myself. Tell me what you use
  9. Hey Cougar, Im very glad I was able to help you out. Im looking forward to meeting and riding with you in person. Maybe in Ft Collins! Scotty
  10. I have taken courses. I also feel it should be mandatory. When you get a motorcycle and a little confidence all of a sudden you feel safe. They teach things in the course that only get learned in trouble situations. At least in the first panic you have knowledge to base you actions on. There are so many young riders that buy the most powerful cycle they can and have no experience. Next thing is a little confidence and after that the stunts. That leads to growing deaths on the road. Training would atleast make them aware of the risks and give tools to help.
  11. Hey' thats a nice ride you got there!! Best of luck with her. Treat her nice and she will be good to you!!!
  12. Yes it is Bill. It lists the Audiovox and the Starmate is built for Sirius by Audiovox. I got mine already and it works. Little deceiving but the MY RADIO STORE is mainly XM. I tried it and it does work and is a lot neater
  13. Depending on what unit you have you can buy shorter ones.I found a 1ft one on www.myradiostore.com I ordered it and got it the next day. I have the Sirius starmate that is made by audiovox. It works. It also fits the XM roady roady2 and the mi fi. They make all kinds of lengths in between and look very neat. Mine cost 29.95.
  14. And Hagist!!!!
  15. No jetting required! BTW tell everyone how much you love the mufflers! I have a set for sale if anyone is interested PM me
  16. Can anyone tell me where the wires for the passing lamps on the RSTD is? I did them on my Venture and I am gonna help a buddy put them on his. He is yet to get on here yet. He is not all that handy so Im gonna assist. Where do you make the connections and what else do I need to know?
  17. I went to bust buy and asked if the XM and Sirius antennas are the same. I would feel better if I tried it but the make a 1 ft long antenna for the XM. Has anyone tried?
  18. I took apart the reciever part of the antenna and I looks like a very careful job to do but I can do it I think. Very delicate soldering but do able. Im still wondering if the XM cable will work.
  19. As long as you have had success I can do it. I went to school for electronics before I opened the tire shop. I think I can give it a whirl. You say you have done it with success?
  20. I am now using the Sirius radio and so far I really like it. One thind I do not like is the Antenna length (Cable) One that came with the unit has a cable about 20 ft long. Way too much speghetti on the Handle bars. Anyone know of a antenna with a shorter cable or is there a way to shorten the cable down to about 1 ft or less just for the bike? I noticed they make a shorter one for the XM (which I dont have) but will the antenna work with the sirius? Help!
  21. both will plug into the port no problem. I just bought the Sirius radio and I have also an Ipod. First Sirius. Once its installed which is easy you can get uniteruped music and news and comedy and sports as long as you can see the sky for the antenna. Costs 12.95 per month to subscribe. Easy to use. Now the Ipod. Depending on which one you get will determine how much music you can put on it. You need to load cds you have already into the computer to load it on the Ipod. A little time consuming and remember the music must be bought also. (Unless you bootleg it). The other thing is unless you buy a large Ipod you will find that you will hear the same songs. Large Ipods are relativly inexpensive. I like and have both but use each differently.
  22. BluesLover, Changing the Muffs is very easy. All you need to do is take off the saddlebag which is very easy. 4 allen key bolts and the box lifts right off. Next you tale out the 14mm bolt the holds the back of the muff and then loosen the 12mm bolt up at the front of the muff. Pull straight back. slide on the new one and tighten the bolts. Put the box back on and away you go. Both sides the same. The muff only have 400 mi on them. Cops were busting my shoes because they weren't Stock. Here we get a 750 dol ticket. Sucks, I loved the sound but someone else will benefit. PM me if you are interested. Not even a scratch on them.
  23. The Khrome werks are a nice choice too. As Freebird has said before he likes them too but he went back to stocks and I put on the RK muffs. I have a new set $300 if you are interested. Here on Long Island the cops bust our shoes for anything other than stock so I put on the RK and drilled them to get a stock look. The Khrome Werks have a nice deep sound and roar. New they are 395 and the tips( these have the taper on them but there are other options) are 25 each. I just want 300 and shipping. If you are interested let me know PM
  24. Well I did it. I bought the Sirius tonight and ordered the brackets. I hope im not sorry but I hate fumbling with a radio when you go out of range and now you are out of range of the stations you like. I opted for the Sirius because Nascar starts in 2007 and just want music. Not caring much for Howard stern though. Sometimes I just want to listen to the game or comedy. I did figure the Ipod thing out too but I dont want to use it too much on there because I have heard some people complaining that vibrations break them after a while. Not sure if thats true but just want to ride and not figure out what to load on it. Still got to buy the music to put on it. I will report with pics after its on and running.
  25. You can use a RAm mount. Check Cycle Gadgets. Also Freebird had a nice one posted before that you screw to the top of the Master Cyl. I dont want that one because I want to be able to take it all off quick if I want. Maybe Freebird will post that link again though.
