  1. That's not an old horn, it's a Yamaha YBB-103. It's pitched in B-flat and is actually a student level instrument. I like it because it's so small (for a tuba) and easy to play in a pinch. I have a horn here at the house that I figure was built around 1925. It was made by the H.B. Jay Co. under the name "Columbia". It's pitched in E-flat and is a variety referred to as a Helicon. The Helicon is the predecessor to the Sousaphone. http://i37.tinypic.com/ra831v.png And yes, I currently play. I play in our sanctuary orchestra at my church and I also play in our local community band, of which I am also the personnel manager.
  2. Well, I was in Woodland Park, CO a couple of weeks back getting my youngest nephew married off (I got to be the holder of the shotgun). While there, On top of seeing the sights, I shot ColoNavy a couple of PM's and did a little sight seeing. This of course involved seing a few of our favorite sights, primarily the summitt of Pike's Peak. We drove the Dodge up to the top. It was arond 9:00 AM up there when we pulled in. The air temp was 34 degrees according to my truck's computer. The chill index was 19. Nice, brisk wind blowing out of the south. We did our usual lookin' around the top, snappin' pictures as we went. Then we came back around to the sign by the summitt house, the one with the name of the mountain and the elevation. Now everyone has their picture taken in front of the sign, it's expected. I remembered that I just happened to have one of my tubas in the back of the truck, momma had the camera. I also happened to have a Kelly mouthpiece in the horn, it's made of Lexan, that means it won't stick to moist lips in freezing temps. So I grabbed the horn and hollered at the wife and this is the result. http://i38.tinypic.com/2072455.jpg
  3. Another scam I keep getting hit with is an unpaid item dispute clain allegedly from Ebay. It says a buyer is saying they already paid for an item I sold them. My antivirus scans the link and flags it as being a link to a virus. I know for a fact that the claim is fraudelent because I have never ever sold anything to anybody on Ebay.
  4. Oh baby! I just THOUGHT these horns sounded good. They out did everyone else's in the group I rode with in the parade yesterday and I was happy about that. But that was at speeds barely above a walking speed and in between tall buildings. This afternoon I took the bike out for a ride on a good, paved farm to market road. I was going 60 MPH into about a 25 MPH headwind. I hit the horns just for kicks and was amazed at the volume and quality of sound. It was music to my ears! I highly recommend the dual horn set-up now!
  5. I have mine mounted below and in front of the front crash bars. Unfortunately, I took no pics of the wiring part (I've hidden the majority of it in the frame and fairing anyway), but I've attached a photo of the left horn shortly after I installed it. A lot of members here do not recommend mounting the horns where I did. But I don't drive through water deep enough to harm the horns and so far I've had no problems with them being mounted this way. But if you prefer them up where the stock horns were, Squigley makes a dandy mounting bracket.
  6. You've got to rewire for either the Bad Boy or the Steble. But the factory horn wires can be hooked directly into the supplied relay. The hot wires are then rub to the batter and horn, with a ground wire coming off the horn. The stock horn button and wiring will not handle the current draw for the new horns.
  7. A while back, some one posed a question concerning air horns. The OP asked the opinions of those who had installed two or more of the Stebel type air horns. This person wanted to know if the dual horn configuration was a more noticable improvement over using a single horn. Well, while not using the Stebel brand horns, I did in fact use the "Bad Boy" type that Harbor Freight sells. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/photos/94100-94199/94117.gif I installed two of them, one on each side, and had the wiring finished up by last Thursday night. I had my opportunity to give the dual set-up a run for the money today when I rode in our local Veteran's Day Parade. I rode with our local Gold Wing group (don't worry, I was riding my 1st gen VR) and there were about 15 bikes in our group. There were approximately 4 of us (that I could hear) that had air horns on our bikes, and mine were by far the loudest. I'm very happy with the dual set-up. In using just a single horn, I noticed that it clearly sounded as if the horn was only monted on one side of the bike, which it was. But when I added the second horn to the other side, it was a difference like night and day. True stereophonic sound! Response was instantanious. There was no hesitation, I had sound the very instant my thumb hit the button. So, are two horns better than one? You bet!
  8. Wow! Talk about a recovery! I would have never thought of turning the plane sideways and relying on the rudder for lift. I'd have folded and died.
  9. Take me with you! PLEASE!
  10. :yikes:No! Please say it ain't so!
  11. http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e157/kingnat000/Popeye.jpg Wimmings is nuthin' but trouble.
  12. I think it's totally shameless and self-centered for people to post links to their personal sites. I would never do such a thing.
  13. No, but I can spell OUCH! I fear this will be the word I'll be using when I eventually shoot my FR8 Spanish Mauser (.308 Nato). I bought it from a cousin after he complained about it's recoil. I feel I may need a shoulder pad that's just a bit softer than the steel one it currently has.
  14. I hear tell that them 375's have a real gentle recoil, just like a .22.
  15. The wife and I voted early as well. Early voting opened for us on October 20. We usually use the county annex building when we vote as it is but a few blocks away. However, we heard that people were literally camping out on the sidewalk there in order to vote. One of the buildings for our ISD was set up for early voting in our county also, so we gave that a shot. To our surprise, we walked straight in, registered, and went straight to a booth. We also voted for the right candidate, though I'm not really thrilled with either candidate. But if I don't vote, I have no authority to gripe when the candidate takes office and immediately becomes stupid. It gripes me though, both parties have men who would be far better choices than these two clowns we have to choose from now. I think we're being "punked".
  16. If a motorcycle jack is used, will the bike be stable enough just being on the jack to remove either the front or rear tire?
  17. They've got a local in Estelline that loves writing tickets as well and just about any spot on I-27 between Amarillo and Lubbock is a good spot to get a ticket. Now, just in case some of you like going north on 287 to Springfeild, CO from Boise City, OK. There is a local in Campo, CO that is constantly on patrol and he lives for writing tickets. The speed going northbound drops from 65 to 55 to 40 to 30 MPH. He will cite you for going 2 MPH over. Just hit the brakes and do the speed limit through this town. It won't be long before you're through it.
  18. Ah, another person on the board who appreciates the finer compositions of P.D.Q. Bach. I feel your pain, so to speak. I've done the same thing myself and it doesn't help much when my livelihood depends on me driving a bouncy truck all day long. Git healed up quick!
  19. I'm reminded of a song, a choral piece in particular that comes from a greater work titled"The Triumphs of Thusnelda". The song I'm reminded of is "The Queen to Me a Royal Pain Doth Give". Git healt up quick!
  20. I can bost that considerably if you're interested in pulling a trailer full of batteries. See, I've got me this here 500 watt linear and......................
  21. Could the same not be accomplished on a first generation then by swapping out the needles with those from a second generation?
  22. Hey guys, here's a good'n for ya. Once on the tuba forum I frequent (TubeNet) a new user was upset because he was unable to use a screen name he liked because someone else was alrady using it. He couldn't persuade the user to change his screen name and posted a message in the feedback section asking the administrator to force the issue. We shamed this idiot into non-existance.
  23. Is it actually possible to move the luggage box back? Like on an 84 VR?
  24. Not no way, not no how will you ever find me riding a bicycle in a place like that. I've got too much chicken in me.
  25. To lurk, or not to lurk. That is the question: whether 'tis nobler in the minds of men to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous retorts, quips and posts, or by opposing, end them with a mighty flame - aye, there's the rub!
