  1. Thanks Kevin, figured it was something like that and not on the '83. Guess I'll have to figure out a way of mounting it otherwise.
  2. Hello all, In trying to help with bleeding of the linked brakes I bought a brake line with the bleeder from an '89 Venture Royale on ebay. It didn't come with a mounting bracket for the bleeder, and I can't figure out from the parts house diagrams what I need to mount it. Can someone take a picture or point it out to me on a parts diagram? I figure I may be able to find one in a parts or bolts lot that are listed on ebay. This is the line I have, bracket would be for the top end of the line. Thanks, Merry Christmas to all, and to all, a good ride! Richard
  3. If they're typical 30+ year-old boots they will have lost all semblance to pliable rubber. I have to pry mine off each time as they're removed, and a squirt of wd40 or some such helps them pop back in. Careful where you pry, of course. Has the bike been sitting up at all? Even if not, it's worth it to go thoroughly through the carbs to clear all the passages and remove any varnish buildup. If you don't have a good set of passageway cleaners it's worth the investment. I got mine on fleabay for $8. It's just different sized wires for cleaning out holes.
  4. I moved mine because as the engine got hotter it would start to misfire. Moving the TCI cured that, but it turned out to be rusted so bad internally that I replaced it.
  5. I'll take a look when I get home. On the road till Christmas night.
  6. I just looked at all starters and highlighted those without the Phillips screws. Yep, $25 plus shipping. The original was at the bottom of the waterfall the bike was parked under and basically turned to red dust when I opened it up. But I got one off an '84, paid for it, THEN found threads talking about 4-brush starters. Tried to get them to swap it for a 4-brush they had listed but they had already shipped the '84 starter. Thought it was fine till I tried to restart after stopping for gas. Reminded me of trying to start a hot '77 Cardinal RG, if any of y'all know about such things. Anyway, this baby whips it right over hot.
  7. I just installed an '87 Venture Royale starter from ebay, unbelievable difference. The 4 brush starters don't have the phillips head screws through the sides of the case. At least the posting said it was from an '87.
  8. Why isn't there a reality show called "Bike Hoarders"? Why do we do this? We can't possibly keep up with it all, it just gives the mice and the wrens more places to build nests, not to mention black widows and rattlers. And today with what passes for petrol, if you ride it then let it sit for a huge length of time of oh, say, a month, you can use the contents of the tank to refinish wood furniture but not much else. So why? WHY??? WHY???? SOMEBODY MAKE ME STOP!! Ahem, sorry. I only have 3 in stock right now, with one on the way. 1978 DT175E in red. 1971 AT1C, also red. And the 1983 Venture XVZ MuTt. On the way is a 1974 DT80A, unbelievably in red. Recently divested: 1973 RT3, 1972 CS5B, 1971 RS5B. Plus the three Honda CL350, 69, 71, and 72. Please. Somebody. Make the voices go...
  9. What do Jeremy, Richard, and James think of it? I know Clarkson had a good time once riding a scooter through Vietnam in the summer with Hammond and May trailing behind. Maybe they could test one on the M4, I'm sure the rules in the UK are a lot more relaxed...
  10. Occupation for 25 years, first with Continental, now United. Last name and birth year round it out.
  11. Dang, busted. All good catches! Here goes...: When I started the resto I was blissfully ignorant of year models and variants. First thing I got was the cluster. Typical ebay listing, "fits 1982-1985". Looked nice, so I got it. Diddn't notice it said "Cruise" on it, nor did I notice the 2-piece monitor vs. 1 on what I already had. Tried to plug it into the harness and DOH!! So since the harness was also a gnarly mess from whatever electrical issues it had when parked all those years ago, I opted to get a 41R loom instead of a 26H. Of course that lead to replacing a bunch of stuff like handlebar controls and anything else that wouldn't plug into the 41R harness. Would have been MUCH easier AND cheaper to just get a 26H cluster and try to sell the other one. So I guess I should change my profile to read Hybrid, or sommat similar. As to all icons showing dimly, that's on purpose. I focused the camera, then turned the key off, then on and snapped the pic. Wanted to show how dim all the icons are. The 1st pic is after cycle-thru. Good eye!
  12. Hey all, Happy Holidays! I rolled the dice on an instrument cluster on fleabay. I needed to replace the monitor in mine as the edges of the glass had what looked like black ink creeping in. I suspect this is an LCD pane and it's in an on-going fail mode. It's always a crapshoot buying stuff this way unless they post of vid of the running bike, which this one didn't. So if it didn't work I'm not out a lot of dough. Well, the new pane works, but it's very dim. I'm thinking it sat in the sun a long time and dulled the pane. So anyone know a trick to bring it back bright and visible again? The clock is from the old unit, the new one was too dim to see. The last pic is the old monitor. In daylight the display is very hard to see. It's getting dark here, plus it's rainy so no outside daylight pics available. But you can see the diff between the upper and lower displays. Any way to make it brighter?
  13. I traded 3 separate 69 to 72 Honda CL350s in boxes for the 83 Standard back in February. Always been a Yamadude but thought I should try to broaden my horizons as I approach 60. Baaaaad idea. Honda parts are outrageous, way overpriced. When this guy on CL asked if I was interested in a trade I initially blew him off. We're getting ready for a long-distance move and I didn't need another bike, just cash. Plus I'd never had anything bigger than a 350. After looking at some grainy pics he sent from his phone I decided to go take a look. It had been parked under a leaky shed for 5 years after the brakes seized, plus it had electrical problems - there was a car battery in the right saddle bag - and was generally a corroded mess. But it was in one piece and wasn't a Honda. And I was intrigued, never had anything that robust before. So I traded my boxes of Hondas for an intact XVZ. I've put a bunch more money into it than I ever planned, more than it's worth. But I'm having a blast with it. And damn, it's fast. Runs better the more I ride it. I think I'll keep it.
  14. The locks on mine were shot, key turned continuously. Ended up using a screwdriver to pry the latch pin back enough to clear the slot so I could lift the saddle bags off. Trunk lock was fine, at least.
  15. Old aircraft mechanic, so right there with ya. If it comes apart it gets the once-over and any required lube. Rode with the new tire and all seems well. I read somewhere in the posts that the type (synthetic vs. *insert word here for non-synthetic when I remember*) makes a difference in final drive noise so that will be my next step. I think synthetic is quieter? Think that's what I read.
  16. Checked all your posts and couldn't find an original describing how you came by this bike, but I saw one that said "new to me", so assume this is a recently acquired machine. I picked mine up in trade for 3 Honda CL's in boxes in February. It ran about like you describe, and I was blown away to find it was only running on the front 2 cylinders. My TCI had apparently been used in an aquarium with as much corrosion as I found inside. After installing a new Ignitech unit it ran okay but I had fouled one of the plugs in the process of things, so it was only running on 3 cylinders, with hesitation like you're talking about. Now with 4 new plugs AND a tedious thrice-over of the carbs (where I found some orifices clogged that I had missed the first two times ), plus a decel diaphragm that was toast, it runs like everyone says it should. A quick hand pat at initial startup on all four exhausts will easily reveal any jug that's not firing. If they all are, I would look for a carb issue - air leaks, cracked slides, bad slide diaphragms, plugged air vents and jets.
  17. So I won't worry about the noises I'm hearing with the bike on the stand. I'll see how things sound once the new tire, or apparently brick, is installed.
  18. Yep, I expect that. What I'm hearing is in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. This is with the rear wheel removed, sitting on the center stand. Revved to about 2000. But I realize with no real load it's not the same so what I hear may not be anything. Thanks for the reply.
  19. Still babying it till I get a feel for the old gal. Been loafing along at 50 to 60 in 5th on back country roads. Haven't dared the interstate yet. Took the rear wheel off today in prep for the new tire and figured I'd listen and feel for noise and vibes like that. All seemed smooth but in 3rd gear, started to hear a sort of clacking sound. 4th was louder, 5th even louder. Seemed to be coming from the middle gear area. U-joint going/gone bad? Removed the final drive unit and checked for freeplay and roughness in the driveshaft, but felt nothing that seemed amiss. There's a small amount of freeplay at the driveshaft end, but doesn't feel like much. So now gonna search for posts on replacing the u-joint bearings, just in cases...
  20. I've looked at the bearings before but I'll check again when the new tire comes in. You may have something on the exhaust, too. When I first got it running it blew the remains of a mouse next out the left exhaust. There may still be crud in there that needs to come out. But why mainly in 4th gear? And the collector is a replacement from ebay; the original was bodged beyond repair, rusted in place where it joined the exhaust pipes. Both sides broke off when I tried to separate them. The copper seals are new, however. The old ones were hard and unpliable.
  21. Now that the bike is running well, I can move on the other things. Being my first cruiser, I don't know what to expect in the way of sounds, noises, and vibrations. I have a new Bridgestone OEM profile tire up front, and ordered the rear today. I think I hear one or the other of the tires "singing" on asphalt roads above about 45 mph. At least I hope it's tire noise. What should I expect if it were high-freq vibes coming from the drive train? I would expect to feel it, but I don't. The only vibes I can feel come in 4th gear, a mid- to high-freq buzz that goes away in 5th. The sound above 45 increases with speed, and doesn't change pitch if I downshift, just changes with speed. What's everybody else's experience? Are these bikes normally smoove like buttah, or is there always a little buzzing of some sort? My dual-shock enduros in the '70s would shake your teeth loose and make your butt itch if you road at 60 for very long, but I figured a big beast like this would be silky. Or is it because it's an '83? Thanks for the info.
  22. I'm gonna close this one out and say problem solved. The root of the issues was definitely the water-logged TCI. With the Ignitech unit installed the other problems were unmasked. Had one decel diaphragm that was turned to hard plastic, and the idle air ports were all clogged, along with 2 or three others I missed. Runs great, extremely quick, almost threw me off the first time I rapped the throttle open. Thanks for everyone's help on this. Onward and upward.
