  1. Well I am positive that my bike will be fully operational shortly. I will tool around here for a bit with it then take a nice long trip. Now being as I have a few variables that I cannot control the date cannot be set yet. But I am planning on making a trip to southern Kentucky around mid summer. A few questions, how do I find and either print or load into my GPS the help/ coffee break list? Do members mind a rider just calling up saying " Hey up for a cup of Joe?" I don't, but I am a little off my rocker. When putting this into my GPS (the tom tom from a previous thread) I found that it will plan from point a to point b but cant program in any stops, but I can deal with that. Am still bringing my atlas anyway. For those that have made longer trips what is most likely (other than the operator) to mess up? Thank You, Shaun
  2. Do you trust your bike?? If you took it on a 3000 mile ride, do you have confidence that it is in good enough condition to make the trip?? In '07 I took my 24 year old '83VR on a two week trip and had total confidence that it would serve me well. How do you feel about yours??
  3. We had a great trip to meers. When we got there they where lined up out the door and down the street, so we headed for Holy City, what a neat place. Then on over to Mt. Scott, the highest point in Oklahoma. Gunny & Robbie had to head back home so we pressed on to get the Waurika Dam. This was my last check point on my dam tour. After getting my picture we headed for Ardmore to get a room. Got there, no rooms available in town so we headed for Davis with a stop at Turner falls. No rooms in Davis, so we headed for Sulpfur, you guessed it no rooms. The next town was Ada. Since this was 120 miles from home we had dinner and home we went under the “BIG MOON” 586 miles for me. I got home at 11:30PM. Here is the photo show of the trip http://www.photoshow.com/watch/fE2Cg9cP?source=em_ps_show_owner Phill

  5. Bought this used Escapade today, '06. First time trailer owner and looking forward to taking a trip with it. Have a cross-country trip planned for end of June, but will have to try something sooner. Any tips from trailer owners for newbies?
  6. A few of us are planning a trip to the Badlands, Rushmore and some Wyoming riding (or anything else around there). But we are wondering about the timing of our trip. We plan on leaving July 22-31 and the Sturgis Rally is going to be from August 8-14. Will we have any difficulty getting rooms from July 24, 25 and 26? Opinions? Also...we had planned to stay in Rapid City, SD and use that as a "staging" place for all of our day trips. But after looking at the map, I am thinking that Custer, SD would be a better staging place...they have motels and it makes the southern part (badlands, Wyoming, rushmore) more accessible since our only trip north will be a quick (very quick) trip through Sturgis. Are there any other OFF THE WALL things to see in the area that most people don't know about? How about any recommendations on Motels in the Custer, SD area?
  7. Now what do I do? Made a heck of a mistake and tried to use a socked instead of an open end wrench (7mm) which I didn't have and sheared off a speed bleeder on my clutch. Didn't have the room to use a socket and was applying too much side pressure. I thought I might be able to replace part of the line. I can't even see what needs to be replaced. If anyone has seen this situation before I would appreciate the help. Not sure if I can try to drill out the speed bleeder some how and then tap new threads. There is not much room to work. Not sure if shops can do this kind of work. Would really appreciate peoples suggestions if you have experience with this kind of thing. Have a trip planned and I have one more weekend to solve the problem or else I will have to cancel my trip over a stupid speed bleeder.
  8. FOR SOME REASON THE LINK TO OUR YELLOWSTONE RIDE DIDN'T WORK. SO WE WILL TRY THIS AGAIN. IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN THERE PUT IT ON YOUR BUCKET LIST. WE JUST DID THE EAST SIDE ON THIS TRIP BUT HAVE SINCE WENT BACK 3 TIMES TO SEE IT ALL. http://www.photoshow.com/watch/aF2Kw9sI?source=em_ps_show_owner pHILL
  9. OUR TRIP TO KALISPEL CONTINUES WITH A STOP AT MEDICINE BOW NAT'L PARK http://www.photoshow.com/watch/MN7Wp3DQ?source=em_ps_show_owner PHILL
  10. In 1992 Loraine & I rode to Kalispel MT. For V-daze. We took a lot of scenic routes getting there. We would like to share this trip with you. The first video is our trip over the Rocky Nat'l Park. http://www.photoshow.com/watch/Si7Rc8Cv?source=em_ps_show_owner phill

  12. Has anyone used the vacume storage bags with the hand held pump for traveling? I'm planning for a June trip and thinking I might try one of this.
  13. Longest rides I've taken in the past have been 3-4 day trips with my dad and brother, sleeping at rest stops on the side of the road when ever we got tired. Since I've got the RSV now, I want to take a "real" trip...I'm thinking about hitting eastern 1/2 of Route 66. Wife and I (2up) will head out from Colorado Springs and ride to Chicago. Then hit Route 66 and take it back down. I'll spend some time in OK with the family, then head back to Colorado Springs splitting off in NM. That will cover the east half...I'll hit the western half maybe later in the year or next year. Here's the map I plan to take: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&safe=on&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=217067729114273134767.000498d3e23585862bb97&t=h&z=6> This will be my first long trip and my first time pulling a trailer (cargo, not camper)... Couple of questions: 1. Any good motorcycle mapping programs? Google maps is okay but hard to get it to put me on scenic routes or specific highways (without a lot of work)... 2. Good rain gear that won't break the bank? 3. Suggestions on what not to take or what I MUST remember to take? 4. Any other suggestions for my first long run? Thanks! BTW: I would love to meet up with anyone that lives along our route that wants to visit or tag along for part of the ride! I know I'm new around here but it would be nice to meet some of you guys!
  14. Sheffield Research Gtc Sr Ta100 - multifunction tester that looks like it might be useful for finding a weak coil. It's a little pricey, but beats a trip to the shop. And I've never begrudged my self a useful tool. Has anyone tried one of these.
  15. Happy birthday to all of you! Hope you are having a wonderful day with lots of cake and ice cream! Maybe a trip on the bike to your local DQ!
  16. On the spur of the moment I decided to ride out to California to surprise my brother for his 60th b-day. Left Salt Lake City on Thursday morning on my '08 RSV and 13 hours later arrived at friends house near LA after 784 miles, even with a 140 mile detour. It was 35 degrees when I left but warmed up with time and heading South. Spent 3 days in Santa Barbara then headed home on Monday, 793 miles and 13 hours later pulled into my driveway. I had forgotten how beautiful that ride is. All I can say is I LOVE THIS BIKE. Cruised at 70-80 mph most of the way and the bike just hummed nicely all the way. The electronic cruise control and my mp3 player made the trip so easy, I wasn't really tired at all. Just under 1800 miles total.
  17. My wife and I just returned from what is probably our last trip of the year. We left for the Amana Colonies yesterday morning at 0700 and just now returned. It was a nice short trip, (515 miles), but most of the fall leaves have already fallen. We took our new LITTLE MD80 video camera with us and clipped it to my wife's dew rag. I am anxious to see the videos to see how they turned out. I will post them to YouTube if they come out okay. We took our Roadstar trailer so we could load up on wine, beer and Root Bear. I averaged 34mpg at approx. 75 to 80mph. - Better than usual. The bike ran great. But I will have to check the heater out. It didn't seem to work as well this trip. Craigr
  18. Slow day today and was going through some of my older files and came across this. Thought you might enjoy. Last May, my wife and I took a trip to Florida. My boss wanted me to keep in touch, so this is the result. Enjoy, I hope this works.
  19. For the past two years I've been looking at the RSV and waiting for the right bike to come along. Two and a half weeks ago (July 20th) I came across a 2009 RSV with only 2500km (have added 1300km since). Original owner had it 4 months. My background is that I got my M license in 1990 (first bike was an '81 KZ305 which I put 20,000km on, second bike which I still have is a 1999 Virago 1100 which I've put 54,000km on). I'm still getting used to the RSV so thinking 2011 I'll do a Canada East Coast trip and plan the big trip for 2012. The "dream ride" is from Kitchener (60 miles west of Toronto) to Chicago to pick up Rt 66 and follow it to California (2 weeks). From there, Pacific Coast highway up to Vancouver (1 week), and then across Canada (1 week) to home. Not looking to do straight milage as this will be a 2-up trip and will be sight seeing along the way. Might extend it to 5 weeks once I lay out the final plans. What I'm wondering is .... when is the best time of the year to do this trip? Being in Canada and wanting to avoid leaving or returning when there is snow on the ground.... my window is basically May - Oct. Considering that I'd be following what used to be Rt 66 and going thru Texas/Arizona and how hot it can be during July/Aug.... when are the best months to go thru these States to avoid the hottest/wettest months?
  20. After a 800 round trip, by the end, I had terrible pain in my sitz bones. Before the trip, I had experienced the same pain while riding on 100 mile trips. As an effort, I have modified the stock pillow top seat by removing the soft foam and carving the harder foam to better fit. Also I used an airhawk pad on the trip. But both of these "solutions" have not helped. Any other suggestions, would greatly be appreciated.
  21. yep another fuel mileage thread but with a twist.. We always hear of people grumpling about getting bad mileage while others boast how fuel efficient their bikes are compared to others.. I constantly ride with the same buddy on long road trips so it gives a good comparison to riding styles, mods and so on as to what works best for fuel mileage.. In the past two years, he's always gotten better mileage than I have, consistently every time until this last trip.. Even after visiting Goose in Texas and getting his expertise at hand to tweak the valves, carbs and so on, my mileage never got any better than my buddy.. In the USA, I would always pump in about .2 to .5 of a gallon more per tank full runs.. In Canada, it would equate to about 1.5 litres or so per tank load.. Except for this last trip!! FINALLY.. the whole trip I finally managed to get consistently every time better mileage than he did.. sometimes by a large margin! yes! lol And I think it's ONLY because I finally remembers to clean out my K&N air filters! When I was down in TX, we pulled the air filters out and just gave them a shake to knock off anything loose but didn't wash and re-load them as they were still very nice and red.. The other week I pulled them off the bike and gave them a proper wash.. and oh my gosh.. filthy doesn't even come close to describing these filters! Even though they looked red and fresh, they were filthy! And right away, after re-loading them, I started to notice much better mileage across the board and under all conditions.. wow.. yeah I think I'm going to be keeping a better schedule on these puppies from now on.. As for mileage? Yeah.. it got me thinking why so many can boast 45-48 mpg while others can get better than 35 or 38 mpg.. I think a lot of it is on how you ride and at what speeds.. Running the bikes anywhere around 50 to 60 on the speedo will get me anywhere from 44 to 48 mpg on this last trip through the White Mountains, while doing 70 - 85 mph on the I90 series will get me 35 to 38 mpg.. (even at 85 we were the SLOW vehicles, wow) So yeah.. basically, clean your air filters.. just cuz they look clean, doesn't mean they are clean.. Its basic common sense maintenance but I totally let it slip past me.. sigh.
  22. Started my trip back to Texas today from Wa. state. The weather finally cleared, hopefully it will be good the rest of the trip. Didnt get as far as I wanted, my rearend isnt used to the long rides. Stopped in Grants Pass, Or. and had dinner with my sister. The goal tomorrow is Arroyo Grande,Ca. to visit my cousin. Bike is doing good, the whining is getting a little annoying. Good riding Mark
  23. Hey Guys, My wife and I are going on a road trip next weekend from East Texas to Vicksburg then Natchez and back home. I was wondering if anyone could give some suggestions on sights to see that we would not see otherwise. I plan on doing the military park in Vicksburg and catching the Natchez Trace on the way to Natchez. Also, I plan on passing through Nachitoches on the way back. So, fire away suggestions because all are appreciated. Thanks. Jeff
  24. Just made it home from our trip to Yellowstone, weather was great except for thursdays rain in Iowa. We spent a couple of days in Durango Colorado then went on up through Utah into Jackson Hole Wy. The park was beautiful and we saw lots of wildlife, finally got to ride Chief Joseph and Beartooth Pass. The Bighorn Mountains and the Badlands of South Dakota. Met another Venturerider from California at a Hotel in Grand Junction Co. We had to stop in Omaha Nebraska and have another new rear tire installed. The folks a Dillon Brothers Powersports were great and got us in and out of the shop in about 90 minutes, they even did a quick wash on the bike at no charge while it was there. We rode 5190 miles in 16 days and had the time of our lives! Most of the time in Yellowstone was about 72 degrees during the day. We also got to see Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monuments. Now we will start planning our next trip out west, there is so much more that I would have loved to have seen, especially in Utah and Montana.
  25. I would like to hear your opinions on a tire issue. On sept 9th as we were leaving to head out west I noticed my rear tire looked low so I checked and sure enough it was down to about 25 lbs. Tire shop found a nail in it and would not repair it. I have been running Avons for a while now and the rear was about three months old. The only thing they had in stock was a Dunlop 404 which I am not a fan of but we were literally on our way out of town when I stopped at the shop. So anyway, I had the Dunlop installed and headed out. Now I am in South Dakota and 3800 miles into this trip and the new tire is about shot. I think it will last the rest of the trip which should total about 5200 miles and I will keep a very close watch on it the rest of the way. This whole trip has been 2 up, pulling a loaded Bushtec trailer and through the mtns of Colorado, Yellowstone and Bighorn mountains of Wyoming and parts of Montana. Do you think that the tire should have lasted longer than this or do you think that it did what it should have considering the conditions?
