  1. Thaks in advance for any info. you can give me on this problem.. MY 86 Venture developed a bad TCI box last year.. Bought one on Ebay and it worked fine until just the other day. I lost spark to the front cylinder and hooked my old TCI up and had spark - so I knew it was the box. Then had a family member who is an elect. tech replace diodes and resolder everything, etc. I put that reapired box on the bike and had spark all the way around and it ran fine - FOR ONE DAY! Again - i lost spark to that front cyl. He again repaired it and I now have spark to all four cylinders but have developed a "bogging down" when applying more than a couple thousand rpm's of throttle. It sits and idles fine but when applying throttle, it backfires a little and boggs down. Is it just a bad TCI or did I mess up and unhook something under the airbox that is causing this or ??? Again - thanks if anyone can help.. jkit02@yahoo.com
  2. What is the purpose of the plugs closer to the outside of the spark plug (see pic...circled in red) It would be a lot easier for ham fisted people if they were "optional" spark plug locations! I'm thinking just a casting plug...but is there any mechanical function to these?
  3. stereo speakers even when the sound system is off. I know this can't be good, the plug wires have the plastic sheathing on them and I don't see any spark jumping in the dark, but where else could it be coming from?
  4. What type (brand) spark plugs you use?
  5. i am at wits end i have a 86 venture having spark issues on no.1 cylinder it wont spark at idle but works at 4000 rpm i have replaced the coil, the wire and the boot with no positve results can anyone give me a solution instead of scrapping the bike like everyone says thank you everyone
  6. Well, after getting my '87VR back together I had 2 stuck carb needle/seat assemblies. So I decided since the old girl had over 70k...it was time for a complete going thru of all carbs. I have put 99% of all the miles on this bike. So I know how it should run. I have done carb work many times on many different bikes. So I was not afraid. Jets were removed, jet blocks "dipped". I set the floats absolutely perfect on the bench and confirmed w/engine running. Results have been all carbs give an ideal idle of 2.5ccw low speed screw all carbs. While #1 & 2 cause rpm drop right at 3 ccw. Which is quite normal to me. BUT on #4(rght. frnt) I can go to 5 turns ccw and not cause the idle to drop and #3 is almost the same. Which is not normal to me. All settings done with an accurate digital tach. Carbs are syc'd.All checks for vacuum leaks done. None found nor suspected because... HERE's the real issue. #4 starts to misfire when the bike is really hot, seemingly like too rich. I can hear the spark cap arcing and using a screw driver and my finger(ouch)confirmed this. Wire replaced 2 times, spark plug & cap(stock and NGK) 3 times-no change. The spark plug is not wet when it is removed. But does have a very small brown spot on it. I suspect something like this may be impossble to read w/o that glass spark plug thing(can't remember the name).I honestly believe the new internal gaskets that are now the "norm", don't seal worth a damn. These new cheapo gaskets are very fiberous.I suspect they don't seal well. The originals were hard paper. Does anyone else whose done rebuilds have the same suspicions regarding these NEW gaskets...? My only other possibility is the choke plunger leaking. But this possibility is something I have never witnessed in all my years. Lastly , I used to always get over 40mpg solo... Now it's impossible. No, I am not going to lower the needles. That's not the issue here.
  7. I was replacing the spark plugs on my 97 Tour Classic and in the process of struggling with removing one of the spark plug wires the wire came out of the boot. Seemed to be much too clean of a break; looked like it was cut with a knife the break was so clean. How do these connect within the boot themselves? I am assuming I now have to replace the entire assembly (coil plus wire), correct? Is there any way to repair it?
  8. Recommended plugs that I can buy at Canadian Tire or Auto Value? Replacing spark plugs requires tank removal? thnx
  9. There's a few of you who have read/replied to my thread regarding my '89 backfiring a lot.http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=45485 I posted a little bit about the no spark condition on the right rear cylinder. I tested the coils, and are within limits, all three other spark plugs work just fine. I tested the spark plug wire installed on the coil and the plug cap removed - got good resistance. I then tested the wire with the cap on and the cap by itself and was having a hard time getting a good resistance value. I had to turn the multimeter onto 200K ohms to get a reading. I'm thinking that the spark plug cap may be the problem. Anyone have other ideas? I've got new wires/caps on order. Hopefully that'll fix the the problem! Has anyone had a no-spark condition before from the spark plug cap or the spark plug wires?
  10. Bought a new-to-me 97 Royal Star Classic. Since I am not sure of the maintenance history I was going to change (among other things) the spark plugs and wires. Any recommendations on what brand of wires, or where to purchase from? Thanks.
  11. Been looking at Tach's for maintenance work. I would like one that works with both the Venture V4 and V-Twins. This is the only one I've found that will do from 1-12 cylinders. It also provides three means of connection(s). What type of ignition system does the 2004 Venture have? How about an 2005 V-Star 1100. A Multiple Spark Ignition System orDirect (coil on plug) Ignition System This is the Tach I'm thinking about. Will it work? I like the Inductive Pick-Up on Spark Plug Wire for maintenance work. Thanks in advance.
  12. whats the best and what gap are you seting them at please???
  13. How do you change the spark plugs on a 2006 RSTD?
  14. I changed all my diaphragms yesterday. I also moved the circlip on the throttle jet up one notch away from the needle to lean it out. I did this on all carbs. At several points, I stopped and started the bike. It sounded OK. It idled OK. Today, I decide to change the spark plugs so I can evaluate the new mixture- and discover #2 cylinder spark plug cap was dangleing on the other side so it was idleing on 3 cylinders. I go ahead and finish changing and gapping all the plugs. The dang thing races at 2200 rpm or higher, no matter where I put the screw. The trottle cable is disconnected, as it broke and I got the new cable this afternoon so have not put it on yet. No, the choke is not on. The linkages seem to all be functioning. I do not see any loose vacuum hoses- but i know a leak may be part of it. What to do? I can't sync carbs like this!
  15. Figured I would change the plugs before I use the newly aquired Carbtune. I've looked but seem unable to locate any thread on the proceedure for spark plug installation. The rear appear a straight forward unscrew and replace. But, how are the front plugs done? Does the tank have to be moved. And the engine support brackets have to be removed? What are the torque specs for them? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  16. I notice after i do something to my bike I read a better way to do it on the forum after i do it, so this time i'm asking. Any special tools or work arounds? should i spring for the irridim (is that like dilithium crystals?) spark plugs? Thanks
  17. 2008 RSV STOCK and serviced at 600 miles by me. Now at 8,000 miles-ish. From Mileage 0000001 thru about 7,000-ish miles got about 200 mpg before Reserve Fuel Light came on. From 7,000-ish to 8,000-ish the Reserve Fuel Light was coming on regularly around 150-ish miles vs 200 miles earlier, that is a 25% loss of mpg. (Thinking to myself Hmmmmm the 8,000 miles Service is soon and then replace (OIL= Shell Rotella 5-40 Syn, Oil Filter, 75-90 SYN in Final Pumpkin and replace spark plugs). These were the same fluids used at 600 mile Service. Had GREATEST of performance enhancement with NGK Iridium Spark Plugs on (Toyata, Subaru, Two Yammie Outboards and Yammie-Rhino-660) using the NGK Iridium Spark Plugs. Threw them in my STOCK 2008 RSV at 8,000-ish and BAM got my MPG back to 200-ish miles before Reserve Fuel Light comes on again... NO LIE So the Owners Manual was DEAD ON in regard to spark plug replacement around 8,000 miles. Hopes this helps someone... NO I'm not a NGK Stockholder or Dealer... Just a decent Mechanic and a simple M/C Rider.
  18. I bought a used 1990 Venture. I went on a trip to OH. I parked it at night, it was running fine. The next day it start skipping and popping. I worked on the kill switch and it seemed to fix the problem. Since I returned home, bike had been running good. I went for a short ride recently, parked it, and it has not started since. No spark! All other electronics work properly. Any and all ideas greatly appreciated.
  19. Hey Folks, Dave Pankow can't seem to get a break with his 1st gens. I am helping him work on a no spark issue and it's looking like it's a TCI or in his case being a '90 VR a DCI. It appears that '90 was when they went to the different control system for the spark, so anything before '90 wont work on his bike. MICarl has been helping us with this problem and is of the belief also that this may be the culprit. What I need to know if some of you pack rats out there have a good spare TCI (DCI) that we can test his bike against. This would only be to verify if in fact this is the problem, if anyone can help him out it would be greatly appreciated. You can PM me or Dave (Jus monkeyin around) and let us know...Thanks in advance
  20. I came home from the M&E in Rockville Saturday evening parked the bike, I got on it this morning and it won't start. I have checked the fuses and the battery, I pulled #3 plug and grounded against the engine case,NO SPARK. The plug looks great nice and tan, no crud. It cranks just fine, I smell a little fuel, not bad. I'm a rookie so please be patient with me and tell me where to start looking. I'm going to go to town and get 4 new plugs while I working on it. Just when we get cooler weather, this stinks!!
  21. Okay, I bought new plugs for my 87VR. So I could check how the bike is running, clean or not? Well after 500 miles on the new plugs I got some misfires at idle when hot. Like when doing a carb sync. or setting the low speed screws w/digital tach. 1st let me say I did all these same things 2 month ago w/old plugs and had no misfires. Now I decided to check everything before getting ready for Americade next week. I have new spark plug wires and caps as of 4 years ago . The misfired showed up as a loud tick coming right from the spark plug cap of #3 & #4 along with a skip or drop in rpm while simply idling, which shows clearly on my digital tach. I changed the spark cap...no change in problem. Then changed the spark plug and problem gone. The plugs removed are clean, not fouled. My low speed screws for all cylinders when adjusted show an obvious "sweet spot" varying from 2.25 to 3.5 ccw. Not trusting these new NGK DPR8EA-9 plugs. I now have all my old NGK plugs back in. I may try to get non-resistor DP8EA-9. Fact being, it's normally the resistor element being faulty under extreme heat that causes the issue. I do not like iridium plugs as the electrodes are very sensitive and should not be touched by even a gap gauge. I guess even Japan is making crap these days...Anyone else had similar problems like this???
  22. Go figure spent all last summer rebuilding my bike after it got smashed up. Had two good rides out of it before parking it for the winter. yesterday. I changed the oil and filter fired it up to go for my first long awaited ride for the seaso and wouldn't you know it, an engine miss put my hands on the exhaust pipes and the left front one is stone cold , YUP a dead cylinder I put a spark tester in line with the plug and opened the gap to test spark strength and was over 1 inch and still getting strong spark jump across the gap. pulled the plug and although it was black it was not wet like a misfiring plug would normally be. going to do a compression test todayand see what my compression is. I sure hope it isn't some delayed damage from when the bike went down.
  23. well im having trouble with my 83 venture xvz12 it wont start ive changed the tci checked the picup coils and omed out the coils and they are all checking out fine but still no spark can any body give me some thought of what i could do next
  24. newbie to this baord HI! ALL . i have a 1983 1200 with a 1300cc motor on it was a members bike from canada anyway i ran when parked last year had to go through carburetors it runs good on back cylinder but no spark on front one any ideals? thanks mike
  25. I have a 86 venture and the problem is I can't get spark returning to the spark plugs. Myself and Dokon have replaced the coils, plugs, the tips on the wire into the plugs, I think it is called the ignition coils ( what goes under the battery box that the coils plug into). We have tried everything it seems we get spark going on but coiming out we get nothing so the bike won't start. Took it to my bike mechanic and he again replaced the coils which I told him I already replaced. He told me that was the problem since no spark was coming down to the plugs. Well he fried the replaced ignitor box and I guess the circuit box in it. He is now stumped and said he doesn't know what it might be and I might have to use it as a part bike. Go figure I only have 100,000 miles on it so I am asking if anyone has had this problem I don't want to park my bike out I love it. He said they only other thing it might be is a bad short on the bike somewhere. Thx, Meatloaf:crying:
