  1. Rode to work this morning for the first time since my accident on fathers day. The shoulder and ribs havn't felt too good until the last few days. Since I had to put the 4Runner in the shop I figured this was as good a day as any. It felt great. Still need to do a few cosmetic repairs and the bike is back to almost like new. Yeehaw!
  2. Hello all, Does anyone close to the TwinCities (MN) have a carbtune that would be willing to help me sync the carbs on my '89? Else, recommend a shop that will do it for a REASONABLE amount? I called a few shops and all the quotes I got were between $120-$160. Thanks, Eric
  3. My did some photo shop stuff of my bike for me!
  4. I'd like to replace and torque my steering head bearings. Anyone know where I can find a ring nut wrench (complete with 3/8 inch slot for a torque wrench) and fork end cap socket? In reading the shop manual, looks like it calls for removing the forks? Is there any way to get around that? Thanks. Jim
  5. I painted my new shop last week and after parking my bike i had to get a shot in front of the new paint, Can you see it? http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b22/MikeM8560/100_1107.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b22/MikeM8560/th_100_1109.jpg
  6. I recently purchased a 1984 Venture Royal after my fiasco with the auction bike. Found a nice shape one that ran from a great member in south Alabama. The only problem is I need a new rear tire. I got some major sticker shock yesterday from bike shop in Slidell La. Seems that the store there wants 187.00 +tax for a new rear tire (brand to be declared) and $97.50+ tax to install the tire. I also questioned front fork seals while I was there since one is leaking. $65.00 for parts, 285.00 for labor... plus taxes. At these prices I can become a mechanic if forced to be, I have air tools and good sets of tools to work with. I have changed a bike tire but it has been years ago and would do it differently now since back then I didn't have spoons just large screwdrivers. I do not have a way of balancing the tire and would like to find a shop that wasn't planning on raping me to purchase a tire from and have installed. Does anyone have any good places here in South Mississippi or South La, or South Ala, or Northwest Fl that they would recommend??? Man I am going to have to try to do some schedule changes to make it to maintenance days somewhere.
  7. There is a 1984 blonde on e-bay. Looks pretty good. Thinking about getting a 1st Gen Mark 1 for the stable. Anyone game to go look at it? Maybe take a few pictures. Looks like a small used motorcycle shop. Seller is acesmotorcycles. Thanks, JB
  8. I am new to this site but find it a wealth of information. Thanks to all Here's my poblem I recently got a 1983 Venture I posted the Vin# here last week and I think it is the first off the line. but thats not my problem. when I got it it had set for about 3 years. It runs OK and looks good but after my inspection I decovered no brakes on the rear. so I ordered a rear master cylinder and last night rebuilt the master. all went well lines bleed out and now have good brakes. I thought while it is in the shop I should change the oil and filters at the same time. I drove the bike in the shop it started and run good. after I changed the oil it would not fire up. It turns over good, it's getting gas I though that it may be a stuck switch so I traced all the wires to the switches sidestand, clutch, neutral switch even the emergency stop switch all check out and still no fire I removed all the fairing and checked the wiring to the TCI module all looked ok to but just no spark. as a way to test the TCI module i removed the Kill wire black/white stripe wire check power in and ground all ok . with the kill line off the bike should fire up and run. No luck on fire. It looks like the TCI module just went bad but before I spend $900 on a new TCI mod I would like to here for some of you. Is their a way to test the TCI mod to be sure if it is ok or not. Is their something that I am missing that will keep it from starting As I said it turns over ok just no spark. but i drove it in the shop any comments you have would be welcomed I need to order the TCI module before Tuesday to have it by the end of the week. Thanks for the input
  9. Does anyone have any idea what a good "out the door" price should be for an '08 RSV? I've tried calling a few dealers and they ALL say "shop around, tell me your best price, and we'll beat it". Well..... if NOBODY will tell me a price untill I'm satnding in front of them with a big sack of money.... how do I shop around??!! Sorry for rambling, just a little frustrated... any thoughts would be helpful....thanks
  10. Well I think Marcarl must still be in shock after my visit yesterday. My phantom wife finally met Carl ( Marca wasn't home) after we left Norwich Ont. for a drive(in her new Sport Ute) not the bike.(last minute decision). We went out to check his bike to see if I had an idea why his bike might be acting the way it is --but I wasn't much help. She said she would try and come to the meet & eat in May .WE also gave her a look around the shop. We had a good visit for about an hour or so and it was time for Carl to finish up his closing the shop and then go for a ride to check-out his bike. Hope it went alright.
  11. Has anyone ever had their ignition switch to freeze up? Mine did. Went to a NAPA shop across the street and got a tube of graphite and put it in several times before the key started working, the switch did it again four times before I could get to the shop. They are going to replace it,I hope with s lock that will match my key. Covered under warrenty, cost $185. Hope I never have to pay for one. tew47
  12. for all of you smart people, here's a question. will a gremlin bell work in my shop? it seems that some of them lil suckers , fell out of my bell, and took up residence in my shop!!!! tools get moved around, parts get lost or mis-placed, "stuff" winds up on the floor, and under work benches! i know that it isn't MY doing, and my old German shepherd dog, swears HE didn't do it, so it must be gremlins! i wonder if a COW bell, would be big enough to catch them all? lol just jt
  13. I just sold my 86VR a couple months ago, because it left me stranded on the roadside 4 times last year. Fixed everything, but wife said, it had to go....[Mama says...] Sold it easy enough. Found a great deal on a Goldwing, low miles, good price, much newer. Everyone knows they're excellent scoots so I got it. Took it to the shop for complete check-over, new tires, brakes, Odessey battery, etc., etc. Temps heading for the 70s today, so off we went. We got 5 miles down the road & it just died...instantly at 55 mph, I downshifted & popped clutch while moving, but nothing. Tried to start it, but battery only lasted for about 1 minute, then dead. I checked everything I could, but found nothing. AARP couldn't find a tow, so they called 911 & are supposed to reimburse the $95. for flatbed ride home, since shop was closing. This makes 5 times stranded within a year....& year isn't up yet. Scoot's going to the shop ASAP, Tow #6?, [3rd different shop], but whatever they fix & tell me, I'll have little confidence in the bike. Maybe it's time to give up ridin' & take up fishin'. How to break a streak like this?
  14. I just ordered Passing Lamps from Yamaha along with the cool little Visors. Is this something that is difficult to install myself or should I take it to the shop? Do we have a tech article on this? http://images.motorsportdealers.com/common/MediaLibrary/CatalogImages/62/250/7439fa007.jpg http://images.motorsportdealers.com/common/MediaLibrary/CatalogImages/62/250/73599698a.jpg
  15. I was wondering if anybody is in the business of selling high performance car stuff, like a speed shop. I would like to get some prices on some stuff I want to buy.
  16. I read the thread from last August on Avon Tyres. Very interesting comments and suggestions. Thanks to Goose for his great evaluation. I have about 3,000 miles left on the Met's and have decided to switch to Avon's and go with the smaller 130/90 front tire. I checked a few on-line sites and see that Motorcycle Pro Shop is a few dollars less than some of the others. Has anyone used this company or know anything about them? I wouldn't want to get tires that's 2 or 3 years old. Thanks. Spotsy http://www.motorcycleproshop.com/tires/avon.asp
  17. Oh, if you were wondering where he is I enjoyed cheese cake last night. After he left Meandogs, he headed my way, in the pouring rain, and arrived last night. He wanted to go to New Orleans ( of all things to visit the HD shop) before he and Lonna made there last leg to Texas. Oh, you did get that, to visit an HD shop, don't ask me why:whistling:. Anyway should arrive in Huston tonight. It took longer than we expected because of work on the bridge crossing the lake that I didn't know about and then the traffic in NO was terible, couldn't find a parking space even in the pay parking lot. So we got out of there and headed west and stopped to eat and saw them off to Texas about 3:30PM. He said he would find another Harley shop in Huston, oh well:think:.
  18. "redneck? i wonder about mike, he hasn't posted lately! all these posts about 1st gens, and not a word from redneck!!!!! ya don't think he went to his shop and got "snowed in", do ya? maybe he is working too hard. - - - - - nawh, that can't be it! lol just jt
  19. I picked up my new 07 a few days ago. While I was doing a walk around on her I noticed a deep scratch in the middle of the lower cowlings. It went straight across both half's and was not there when I was looking at it on the showroom floor. Told the owner about it and man was he upset, his people (kids) did it when they put the bike on the stand to service it before pickup. Of course they didn't say anything to him when they did it, only admitted to it when he asked about it. So the cowlings are at the body shop being repainted. The owner said that I could do anything I wanted to them and he would foot the bill so I'm having the body shop spray rock guard on the bottom and then paint it black. The cowlings were all blue. I will post a picture when I get them back, which I hope is today because I want to go for a ride this weekend. I have all the acc. mounted that I have, I'm waiting for the truck rack, bag rails, stubel horn and grips to come in.
  20. I POSTED EARLIER ABOUT MY 86 VR RUNNING ON 3 CYLS AFTER TOWED TO SHOP WITH A BROKEN THROTTLE CABLE. CABLE FIXED, BUT THEN, SHOP SAID SCOOT ON 3 CYLS. [iT WAS RUNNING PERFECT WHEN CABLE BROKE. SCOOT LOST LF CYL WHILE IN SHOP] I PICKED IT UP, RODE IT MYSELF [to see for myself...60 miles] TO MY REGULAR SHOP & IT WAS DEFINATELY ON 3 CYLS. IT TOOK 'EM A WEEK TO GET TO IT, BUT THE TECHS SAY IT RUNS PERFECT & ON ALL 4 CYLS ??????????????????? THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO IT, EXCEPT TEST 4 GOOD CYLINDERS. THEY TESTED E/THING POSSIBLE, BUT ALL CHECKS OUT FINE. My thought is intermittent electrical problem, but if that's the case, I can't ride it anywhere with any peace of mind PLUS NO WAY TO TRACK DOWN PROBLEM. Any ideas that don't require dynamite?
  21. My 1983 venture overheats and I cant find out why. I have replaced the thermostat, water pump and the radiator cap. The fan comes on and runs the correct rotation and at the right temp. No mater what I do it I cant find out what is causing this and I have taken in to the repair shop and they don't know why it is doing this either. I let the bike sit for about five years but when I decided to ride it again I took it into the shop and had the carbs serviced and what ever else it needed. Hope someone can help me out with something elese to try
  22. Took scoot to shop #2 to replace throttle cables & done today, but tech says LF Cylinder is not firing [?] He is also sure there is no electrical problem. He has no reason to tell me wrong, since he has bike in shop. I had carbs, diaphragms, plugs, sync, etc., done this summer at shop #1. They didn't notice LF cylinder is cold ?? Tech #2 says it can only be carb issue. Bike has always ran 100%, easy start, great power, instant start, etc. The only constant here is poor 32 MPG over the past 1.5 years. Techs will talk to each other today & bike stays at one shop or the other until fixed....or neither will 'remember' me or bike again. This makes zero sense to me. How can a dead cylinder NOT be diagnosed? I haven't spoke with Tech #1, who synced carbs, yet [he's out], but cylinders all had to be firing. So, What could this problem possibly be ??
  23. While vacationing in Ft. Myers Fl this week, I decided to go shopping for a new helmet today. I visited all of the area dealerships in my quest. BMW/Triumph/MV Agusta/Ducati, Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda, Kawasaki and Harley shop. After all of the visits I came away with a few impressions. The BMW shop was small the people generally friendly but somewhat looked down their nose at people not on one of their brands. They had very few helmets and all of their apparel seemed to be the BMW brand. Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda shop was huge and new. Very few helmets styles to try, just a lot of the same thing. No one seemed to care that I was there or not. Did not really feel welcomed there. The Kawasaki dealer seemed more into watercraft than bikes. There was a young guy there that came up to talk with me a bit and he was friendly enough. Once again, not many helmets to choose from. The Harley dealership was the most inviting. While they also didn't have the type of helmet I was looking for, they were very cordial and welcoming. I was approached several times by friendly staff seeking to help me. Not pushy, just wanting to make sure I was taken care of. There was a lot of activity in the store with staff moving about taking care of business. One gentlemen asked what type of bike I rode and when I told him he offered a compliment on the bike and didn't seem to think any less of me. Of course there were a few Harley owners around with the "Harley" look and maybe attitude. I must say, if I knew nothing about bikes and were shopping today for a new one the folks at the HD store would have had first crack at my business. And the new Harleys sure are pretty with all of the chrome shining. Still helmet shopping. Dennis
  24. i purchased a primered spoiler and took my bike into a paint shop to get the correct formula for painting my spoiler. colorite could get the paint but at a rediculously expensive price. i had it painted and it matches great with the rest of the bike. should anyone be interested here is the formula, what these numbers mean i'm not sure but a paint/body shop should know 855j light red 30.9 866j red violet 58.1 4530s flop control agent 80.7 805j jet black 93.6 1002s red pearl 97.3 62320f binder 204.8 62330f balancer 221.5 i hope it helps anyone who needs this
  25. Went to a shop that has a good reputation for tires and goodies also a few friends said go there if you need tires or a helmet. I asked for a price on Michelin Commanders and the shop owner said the michelins were not that great of a tire for a heavy bike like mine. Said Avalons or Dunlops only. So now what?
