  1. My Mom and Dad were just awarded this by the State of Maine Patriot Guard Riders. The award will now be given out annually in my parents name. All 6 of us kids are proud of Mom and Dad and their involvement with The Patriot Guard Riders.
  2. I'd like to extend an invation to my Venture Rider board friends, to an event that I've put together. It's based around the members of the GL1800 board which I'm also a member of. We Gold Wing riders would love to have you RSV riders come out. The area is some of the best riding in Pennsylvania. http://gl1800riders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=238966&highlight=renovo Bill Morphy http://www.Mic-Mutes.com
  3. How many wings showed up at MD? I think I saw a pic of Ecks bike. Were there any others? Were any Venture riders converted?
  4. Venture riders sure like to hug
  5. Its time to put this out for all Va riders (or any other state) going to Oberlin OH for Maintenance Day. My tenative plans for the spirited ride to Oh are as follows. Leave Fredericksburg. VA on Friday the 18th at 7:30am and meet up with Venturing Sole at about 8:30am at the usual gas station at the intersection of RT-17 and I-66. I will be riding with Mini-muffin and the Bugfishes. If there is anyone else who wants to join in and ride up with us let me know where to meet you guys. The proposed route is posted below. Just give me a address where to meet you and i'll let you know what time we will be there (+ or -). http://www.mapquest.com/mq/4-UKgTRCJ6 The ending place is the Comfort Inn. Hey Aamcotrans, you still going!!!!!

Maybe its just me but in the past few weeks I have noticed 5 riders, 3 on wings and 2 on harleys with one thing in common: all were wearing flip-flop beach sandals while riding. Are they nuts? One hard stop where you have to put your foot down will rip that piece of rubber right off your foot with your foot possibly added in to that equation. I mean, c'mon...what are you thinking?? And these were not kids..older riders who should know better. Oh yea, the HD riders also had no helmets on. Sigh.........
  7. Trike Riders - are there any trike riders out there that's going to the "Trike Riders International" Ralley being held at Branson, Missouri August 19,20,21? I'll be heading up to Indianapolis 8-15 to meet up with my cousin and some others and then head out to Branson. Below is the web site. Ken:cool10: http://www.trikes.org/rally2010.htm
  8. Need an RSTD owner within striking distance of Beloit, WI who wants a free rider's backrest, in return for letting his bike be used for the measurements. Just spoke with Grasshopper Limited (http://www.grasshopperlimited.com) in Beloit, WI. They need someone with an RSTD to come to their shop for a few hours so they can start making rider's backrests for RSTDs. Whoever goes gets a free backrest.... and I get one too! Anyone avail and so inclined please contact me ASAP so I can turn this on! Steve
  9. A couple of weeks ago I was surfing around the web and happened onto the local community college ad for the beginner and experienced rider courses. I was curious to know how far in advance they were booked to. The beginner class is full to June, even having class every Fri/Sat/Sun from April thru September. The experienced rider class is held only one Saturday with an early AM class and late PM class. For a whole $25 I thought I'd give it a try. I called admissions to sign up for the AM session and was told "sorry, no can do. Lack of interest canceled the AM class, but we do have space in the PM course." Readers Digest version, they take up to 16 bikes per class and there were 10 riders there including yours truly. Now in all fairness, it was raining off and on for most of the day, so I suppose that's a reason for the no-shows, the class was fully booked. Nine guys, one girl. Riders ran from a low of 25 years old to a high of 55. Experience level was surprising to me, and a tad scary. The 30something guy riding a very nice shiny newer Goldwing said he had a total of about 30 days riding experience. I'm sorry, did you say you're first bike is a Goldwing and you've been riding for 1 month? Yup, that's what he said. At least he had his M endorsement. A couple of the guys had several years on various bikes, but the norm seemed to be 1 year give or take. I was the old man with my 40some years. There was only one rider that professed to regular (or ever) practicing parking lot drills. I felt a little lonely. lol There was the usual assortment of HD's, the Wing, a Triumph Tiger, FJR, FZ, V Star, an V Strom, and my Venture. Class time sucked. Or at least I assume it sucked as about 1/3 of the class had paperwork that said the class started a 1:30 when it actually started at noon. I was really bummed to be late. (yeah right) The riding drills were pretty much the same thing as the BRC and almost bored me to tears. Most of them I did once or twice and then parked to watch the other riders. Now that was fun. Nobody dropped anything, but they did come close a few times. The high point of the entire thing was the last drill. A large elongated oval with a kind of "swerve" on one side. They split the group in half and had five bikes at a time play follow the leader. The first group had all of the less, ah...stable, riders in it. They pretty much crawled around the circuit. The other group was the FJR, a Dyna Wide, V Strom, Tiger, and Venture. A comment was made along the lines of it being alright to step up the pace a tad, and we were off. We all stayed on the rubber with only the Dyna and myself dragging parts on every corner, and the instructor slowing us down only once. I never did get out of first gear. I know, it's not a race, but it's supposed to be fun, and that made it fun. All in all, it wasn't a waste of time, but it came close. Now bear in mind that is the opinion of a rider with more than 40 years on two wheels, who still does slow speed parking lot practice on a regular basis. I was a little surprised that I did as well as I did considering that I've had this Venture for only about 1200 miles. I bought it late last fall when I sold my Spirit 11. For some of the newer riders, it likely did a bit of good. The Goldwing guy was absolutely more comfortable at the end than when he got there, and the lone girl, riding a 1200 Sporty, was still shaky but said she felt better for having done the class. She told me that her first X-way ride was on the way to the course. I'll admit I didn't really expect to get a lot out of it. I was surprised at how easily the Venture scraped running boards. I hadn't had one drag before, and this class did accelerate the experience for me so if nothing else, it was worth that lesson. Plus, it was fun pulling into the lot wearing my non DOT beanie, sneakers, fingerless gloves and just a t-shirt in the light rain, then changing to stuff they'd let me ride in while I met the group. Any time riding is a good time and for $25 it was worth it
  10. Just spoke to Beverly at the Comfort Inn, Elyria OH, 440.324.7676. She says that she will have rooms for Venture Riders for June 19 2010, for $62.95 + taxes, for double queen, and comes with a free hot breakfast. Don't know if anyone has got this rate yet, but all you need to do is the tell her that you belong to the Venture Riders and you'll be getting that rate. Oh and she loves Motor Cycles,,,,,,,ya,,,,, Harleys, can you imagine.
  11. This may have been posted before? My Motorcycle Has Taught Me: The only good view of a thunderstorm is in your rear view mirror. People ask us why we ride a motorcycle. For those who have experienced the joy, no explanation is necessary... For those who have not, no explanation is possible. I'd rather be riding my motorcycle and thinking about God, than sitting in church thinking about my motorcycle. Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul. Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle. Life may begin at 30, but it doesn't get real interesting until about 60 mph! You start the game of life with a full pot o' luck and an empty pot o' experience. The object is to fill the pot of experience before you empty the pot of luck. If you wait, all that happens is that you get older. Midnight bugs taste just as bad as Noon time bugs. Saddlebags can never hold everything you want, but they CAN hold everything you need. Don't ride so late into the night that you sleep through the sunrise. Sometimes it takes a whole tank full of gas before you can think straight. Riding faster than everyone else only guarantees you'll ride alone. Never hesitate to ride past the last street light at the edge of town. Never do less than forty miles before breakfast. A bike on the road is worth two in the shed. Respect the person who has seen the dark side of motorcycling and lived, and still rides. Young riders pick a destination and go.. Old riders pick a direction and go. A good mechanic will let you watch without charging you for it. Sometimes the fastest way to get there is to stop for the night. Always back your bike into the curb and sit where you can see it. There are drunk riders and there are old riders, but there are not many old drunk riders. Ride to work. Work to ride. Whatever it is, it's better in the wind. Two-lane blacktop isn't a highway - it's an attitude. When you look down the road, it seems to never end - but you better believe it does! Winter is Nature's way of telling you to test the electrics. Keep your bike in good repair... Motorcycle boots are not all that comfortable for walking. People are like motorcycles: Each is customized a bit differently. Sometimes, the best communication happens when you're on separate bikes. When you're riding lead, don't spit. A friend is someone who'll get out of bed at 2 a.m. to drive his pickup to the middle of nowhere to get you when you're broken down. Catching a yellow jacket in your shirt at 70 mph can double your vocabulary. There's something ugly about a NEW bike on a trailer Everyone crashes. Some get back on. Some don't. Some can't. If you can't get it going with bungee cords and duct tape, it's serious. If you ride like there's no tomorrow, there may not be one. The best modifications cannot be seen from the outside. Always replace the cheapest parts first. You can forget what you do for a living when your knees are in the breeze. Only a Biker knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window. Keep the paint up, and the rubber down! There are two types of people in this world, people who ride motorcycles and people who wish they could ride one.
  12. I have a person ( John ) from north of Atlanta Ga. who is interested in my venture. Said he is buying it for fellow riders from france who enjoy riding first gens when in the US. He needs to find a way to get the bike home but does not have a trailer. Is there any fellow riders that might be able to help and get the bike to him. I maybe able to get it part of the way. This is early in the dealing right now and depends on how everything goes. The bike is licensed and insured, so riding it is possible. The only reason I'm bring this up on here is, this is where he found it so he must be a member or soon to be a member. Thanks nyjerry
  13. Just got back from the bike show at the Tradex in Abbotsford. Got a hand out from Best Western which promises special rates and points rewards, room upgrades etc, but only for Harley riders. It states that it is exclusively for Harley riders and is covered with Harley logos. I think I will contact them and express my displeasure at being excluded from this because I ride a Venture. bestwestern.com/h-devents. Other than that the show was good. Sat on the new/old Venture and Bilco came over. We talked about Neslon for a bit. I sat on the new V-MAX and it reminded me of my old Madura. Some very interesting custom bikes there.
  14. The Great VR Scavenger Hunt, relegated to the "fun & Frivolous" section is not getting the action it did when correctly placed in this more active area. Anyway, want to remind everyone that it is still and has been going on, but it seems like mostly a few of us from Illinois have been getting the targets even in this bad weather, while the bunches of you in warm areas are doing....what? You NEED something to strive for, a challenge, a task that will take you and your bike to new and interesting places and meet new and fun people. So join in on the scavenger hunt and be the first one to get the new target: You and your bike at a beach. Can be snow covered, but if it is covered by babes in bikini's you get extra points. (or guys in speedo's for the female riders) Visit us in F&F and YOU could pick the next target, and win the accolades and respect of your fellow Venture Riders! Or just wait for us Illini riders to get it again and hog all the rewards (warm glow, applause from afar and the knowledge of a job well done, no cash, sorry)
  15. This is from our ride yesterday morning for Breakfast. My neighbor Gail and I rode out together. Yes, Ruff, the same young lady that was with me for the M&G in St, auggie last year. with the wind chill factor, it was 21 degrees. PS 22 riders showed up for the breakfast ride.
  16. Seeing as how Yama Mama decided to only wish Happy New Year to all the Lady VR Members and snub all the male VR riders Here is a great big HAPPY NEW YEAR to all VR riders :dancefool:

  18. 'Twas a bit before Christmas, when throughout Venture Land All the posters were nervous, Freebirds delete button close at hand The weather was cold and most were unable to bare The thought of not riding again soon would be there Most riders were nestled all snug in their beds While some planned trips all crazy in their heads With Squidley on his Harley and Lonna in her jammies The DQ was closed with no hope of any yummies When out on the road there arose such a clatter BongoBob heading south, rain and snow a splatter Away from the computer I moved like any guy Only to the kitchen for SleeperhawksMechanics pie The moon on my keyboard with a nice little glow Anxious to see what Yamaha brings to the next big show When what to my wondering eyes should appear But a picture of the new VENTURE all gussied up with gear With no extra cash and outa the click My stocking was empty, piss on St. Nick More rapid than eagles the spring events came Where we hope to meet more riders and know them by name Now, Ruffy! now, MamaMo! now, Muffin and Mini! On, Skid! on, Dragonrider! on, Wrongway and Boo! To the curvy back roads, through the end of the fall Now ride away! ride away! ride away all! As free as a bird the VENTURE can fly One day we’ll ride again with fallen brothers in the sky So out to the garage to check your tires and gear With the bike loaded down and a “Good Bye” to my beer. And then, in a twinkling, in my belly a loop I have to take off my gear cause I have to poop As I throw my leg over with power all around With a twist of the wrist I am VR rally bound Dressed up in Kevlar from his head to his foot At wide open throttle burning out the soot A bundle of junk he had flung on his back He looked like Wild Hair with that great big sack His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! Eck and his Wing, a sweet little cherry! A droll, little Midnight Rider naked with a bow, Dancing around for Cinderella giving her a “tiny” show Beer30 had a chew held tight in his gum He filled up his spit cup with mischievous Ho-Hum RandyA had a broad face and a bit of a belly That shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly Stardbog always happy, a right jolly old self You can’t help but smile, in spite of yourself In the wink of an eye the mods read a thread Should I let this continue or should it be dead He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work Yammer Dan has retired, no more putting up with perps And pulling his finger as everyone knows Will make “The Pond Monster” smell but not like a rose He sprang to his Venture, to his team gave a whistle Riderduke said watch this guy he rides like a missile But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night". names changed to reflect the "usual suspects"

  20. Our FOE ride stopped at IHOP for breakfast in Gainesville, Ga this morning. The parking lot was packed and the only place I could find to park was to squeeze into a space with three other bikes already there. Two were 1st gens and the 3rd was a Virago. One of the first gens was a blonde MK1 83 and the other was an red/Marone 89 mk2. As I was landing my bike the riders were coming out to leave. So naturally I had to talk to them to see who they were. The rider of the 89 actually owned all three bikes. He told me that he had bought the 1st gens off craigs list locally. the 83 he said he had paid $750 for and was showing a few cracked plastic scars but was otherwise complete and running. The 89 was almost pristine with all the bells and whistles and he had only paid $850 for that one. They had never heard of this forum so I wrote it down for them and they said they were deffinately gonna check it out. While we talking they also told me about a benefit ride they had riden in the day before out of a bar in Gainesville. It evidently was a benefit ride for member of a local club that had Cancer. The ride was sponsored by two different local bike clubs and was an Police escorted ride with about 80 bikes. The bike owner was an EMT and was appalled at the nature of the ride and how dangerous it was even though it was Police escorted. He said the the ride fee included all the free beer and liquore you could drink. And by the time they pulled out most of the riders were pretty buzzed. At the rest stops there were free pitchers of beer so during the ride most of the riders were drunk and hot roding up and down the pack. all under Police ride control. It must have been a sight because several of other people we talked to in Gainesville not related to the ride were talking about it.
  21. I wanted give a plug for Rider's Hill in Dahlonega. I pulled my rear wheel this morning and took it to the tire shop there and they mounted and balanced the Avon Venom I took them for $25. They also have a large selection of tires in stock, at least 400 or more and I'll try to buy my front Avon from them when I need it in another 2,000 miles or so. They have a snack bar in the motorcycle dealership there, nice tables with a big screen TV, dipped premium icecream available as well as a variety of sandwiches. Here's the nice part. I ordered a chili dog and coke while I was waiting for my tire to be mounted (took 15 minutes). The lady at the counter asked me if I was a military vet, to which I replied yes. She said lunch is on us today, no charge..... For those not familiar with this shop, it sells new Aprilia and MotoGuzzis, and has a large consignment area with a variety of makes of bikes. http://ridershill.com/

  24. I posted this on another thread earlier but with so many PGR members on site I thought I would re-post. Saturday, Sept. 19th the Mn PGR set a record for the longest flag line to date. U.S. Army Reserve Camp Ripley located near Brainerd Mn held it's annual open house, set aside it's helmet/safety gear reg. for the day. PGR riders began to arrive. A steady stream passed thru the gate as one by one, some in groups began to assemble. All in all, 1344 riders stood tall, flags waving, to honor our men and women in uniform. Beautiful! (Any takers?) Renne PGR USAF Ret.
  25. My old Army National Guard unit, 211th Engineer Companay (Sapper) deployed this morning. There was a convoy of busses taking them to Camp McCoy, WI for initial deployment training and then to Afganistan for a year. There was a good turnout of towns people along the route through main drag. I was impressed with the member of the Patriot Guard Riders and Rolling Thunder that led the busses for the guys. For members here that are PG Riders, Thanks for all you do! Please keep all the troops, from any where, that are in harms way in your thoughts and prayers. Dave
