  1. Looking for a replacement for a broken clutch lever (26H-83912-00) Does anyone make a replacement/after market lever like Moose? Been searching and haven't found anything.
  2. Good afternoon. I am in a frenzy. This question is about my 88 VR. I just did the Barnett upgrade of my clutch and it went so smoothly I was figuring I did something wrong. Well apparently something is wrong cause now I can't pull the clutch lever. I followed the steps from HDHTR in the tech guide to the letter and even took the old plates apart one by one and laid them off to the side in the order I took them out. After removing the boss wire and taking out the last friction plate and steel plate I inspected the basket for burrs and it was in good shape so I began reassembly. Put in the first friction plate, the 16321, and then the first steel plate and then installed the boss wire, and proceeded to install the plate in alternating order, friction, steel, friction, until I was out of new friction plates and all the steel plates had been used up too coating each plate in oil as I went. After installing the Barnett conversion and torqueing the bolts to 8 ft lbs I tried to pull in the clutch lever and I can not pull it in. There is space between the Barnett and the last friction plate I installed and I can move the plates in and out by hand. When I torqued the bolts I had to hold the Barnett to keep it from spinning. It acts as if teh clutch is disengaged but the lever isn't pull in. So I put it all back together and jacked it up with my HF jack and started the motor and put it into gear and there was nothing, like I said as if the clutch lever was pulled in. The reason I did this conversion is that when I went for a ride weekend before last the clutch started slipping in the upper gears so I wanted to get it replaced before it got too bad. I also might add that I replaced all of the bleeder valves with speed bleeders and purged all of the lines. I thought maybe the clutch has an air blockage causing the slave cylinder to be activeated so I took the speed bleeder completely out hoping it would relieve the pressure but that didn't work either. So now I am looking for any and all help I can get. Do I need to replace the clutch slave cylinder now and if so I haven't been able to find the procedure for doing that in my seaches. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to have to take it to the stealer to find the problem.
  3. There is a brass piece in the clutch lever that depresses the plunger for the clutch. On the used 2002 Venture I bought last year, this piece is quite worn - I think the previous owner never lubed it. Does anyone know if this piece can be purchased anywhere? If not, I'll probably see if I can find a piece of brass rod with the appropriate diameter and drill a hole partway through for the plunger. Also, can the pivot bushing for the clutch (and brake) be replaced? Mine are a bit sloppy due to (I suspect) lack of maintenance. Didn't find part numbers for these bits in the Yamaha listings. Ross
  4. Went to my local yamaha dealer the other day and asked about a new clutch lever. He quoted me a price of $36.00. I thought the price was kinda high. He said there was no after market levers aval for my bike. Does anyone no where i can get a new lever with out going into debt to much. I was afraid to ask about him about the rubber under the cover for my clutch master cylinder, need one of them to..any help please...

    Need a part

Clutch lever for an 83 1st gen ..... surely someone has one laying around or knows of an aftermarket that would fit ? Steve
  6. I was wondering If anyone knows how to get the electronic cruise on a 86 venture to stop kicking off when ever I hit a bump? It seems like the clutch lever has a little play and if not held all the way out while riding it kicks it off???
  7. I have the PCW racing clutch upgrade. When I installed it, I left the last flat spacer in, getting in to big of a hurry. I found this out because the clutch lever would not engage. I went back in and removed the spacer. After reinstalling my clutch lever still will not engage. How bad have I messed up here, and has anybody had this experience so that I might get some suggestions. I appreciate this site and the imfo I get.
  8. I've noticed that my front brake lever kind of "catches" as you pull on it, not a smooth pull. Seems to be due to it rubbing on the actuator/plunger in the master cylinder and not having lubrication there. It appears that there is a slight depression or cupping in the actuator where the lever makes contact. I sprayed some dry lube on it and it smoothed out for a couple of days but is back to catching in increments again. Is this normal and what do you guys use to lubricate that contact point?
  9. two days ago, rode the '86 VR and it ran great. Got on today and the clutch lever is super stiff. Slow to pull in and slow to come out, doesn't take forever to come out, maybe a full second, but doesn't snap out like it did last ride. System was worked on and fluid flushed last fall by Yamaha dealer, has been perfect all summer. What happened in the space of less than 48 hours sitting?
  10. Friend just bought 08 Venture. Has around 1500 miles on it now and every time he rides his clutch hand turns black. It only takes about 10 miles of back road riding for this to happen. Getting worse the more miles he puts on. Dealer said he would check with rep about replacement. Friend thought this was not right for just a clutch lever. We think maybe the lever was not sealed (?) or coated correctly from factory. Any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks Gil
  11. I don't know how everyone else's clutch is, but on my Venture, there has always been a fair bit of lever movement to operate the clutch, I have had to top up the cylinder periodically (though it had never become any worse) since buying it eleven years ago and it has been prone to getting bubbles in the line. A couple of months ago I was greasing the pin and checking it for wear when I noticed that the pin (asymmetrical with a shoulder/seal part way down) could be replaced the other way round, thus giving the piston much more movement. Like this the clutch was much better, but it did weep brake fluid. Not drastically, but a couple of months and 4,000 miles later (we did a long Summer trip) the clutch master cylinder was empty. If it gets no worse I'm tempted to keep it as it is, but I'm looking for a rebuild kit. Has anyone else had any reason to play with these ?
  12. Ok folks. '99 w/ 42k mile. 1st clutch replaced at just over 16k with Barnett plates and springs due to slippage. Clutch seems strong (no slipping) but does not disengage when clutch lever is pulled in. Bled clutch fluid today and checked engine oil level (even topped it off) since it is after all a wet clutch. Still wants to pull when lever is pulled in. Short of pulling clutch out to look for warped plates, etc., which I don't think is case. Heard one comment that maybe plates got dry (bile has not been sitting) and best way to free them up is to get up to about 15MPH and lock up rear brake with clutch pulled in. Any help / suggestions would be appreciated. pa_don
  13. The gift that keeps on giving. We left WV on Monday riding the 89 towing our trailer. The first fuel stop was 120 miles down the road. I noticed some clutch problems only half a lever of clutch and not completly disengaging when stopping. By the time we got into Tennessee the heat index was 100 and the fan was running continously as the temp guage stayed just below the red. Getting off at the pigeon forge exit I totally lost the clutch lever ( no pressure as I squeezed it). MamaMo enjoyed coming to a stop at the exit using the kill switch. We managed to get into the visitors center and let the bike cool down for 30 minutes until I got some lever back. We made it to our rental in Sevierville and I called Jeff. I told him I had some discoloration in the clutch site glass. He said he had seen a hose problem do that same thing and he would bring one to Asheville. We could change and flush it there. We rode around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg the next day shopping and I was good for about 5 mile or 10 stoplights before problems. I picked up some brake fluid and decided to flush it myself. Thats when I noticed my smallest wrench a 8mm was to big for the bleeder. I called jeff who was now at Asheville and he offered to ride the 90 miles bring the hose and fix it. He made it by 8:45 pm we change hose and flushed the system. Jeff rode back to Asheville that night. The next morning we pulled MamaMo and the trailer up over the smokeys 6000 ft elevation and down to Cherokee,Maggie Valley, and on in to Asheville. The clutch worked like new. At the campground Jeff was non stop tweaking and fixing first gens. I noticed some second genners waiting for a touch from the venture doctor. Many thanks to a guy that keeps on giving.
  14. My clutch lever is engaging about 1/4 inch off the grip and the lever has a lot of free play in it. Fluid level is OK and the fluid in the reservoir looks clean. (The level was a bit low and some fluid was added about a month ago.) Should I flush it out and rebleed the system to cure the problem? Also, is there a free play adjustment (on the slave cylinder or elsewhere that could have come loose)? I can't find anything in the service manual but maybe I missed it. Has anyone else had this problem?
  15. Can't think of anything I've done that could have caused this; just wondered if it's due to failure of the little solenoid down by the rear brake pedal. I can hear a little click coming out of this little box whenever I activate the pedal or the front lever........but the brake light just stays brightly lit all the time. Anyone ever had this symptom before? Thanks for any words of wisdom. Mike
  16. Help. I'm replacing the front brake line and the brake master cylinder on the handle bars emptied out. I'm having problems building the pressure up. The lever won't pump up. Any thoughts? joe

    08 Clutch Lever

Hello everyone....The weather here in central Florida is really starting to heat up (hit 90 today) Hoping someone has found a solution to this problem. I have average size hands and I am having a problem reaching the clutch lever while keeping my hand firmly on the grip. As it appears that there is not an adjustment that will move thelever closer to the grip I am hoping that there is a company that makes a sutible adjustable clutch lever that will fit my 08 RSV. Many thanks......
  18. Okay, followed the instructions found here on the web site that Freebird put for the Barnett Clutch. Now here is the issue, can't squeeze the clutch lever at all. Also, bike was in gear before removing the clutch plates, but now I can roll the bike and the green light for neutral is not on. The only way I can squeeze the clutch lever is have Mechanic put some pressure on the "plunger" that sits in the bearing. So anyone have any ideas as to what I need to do? :confused24:
  19. Well i noticed last night that i have to pull the lever almost all the way back to have a full release. Found that out at a stop light. I have noticed over time that the lever seems like it needs to move a little farther back to release the clutch. The clutch does engage at the same point it always has. It has been hot here in KC and humid for most of the summer. I don't know how old the fluid is but it is not clear but more of a dull darkish tinted color. I have done a few searches on this site and my first course of action will be to change the fluid. I havent had any leaks so maybe a new hose if the fluid swap doesn't do the trick. This site is a great resource for repair how to do's because the members actually do their own repairs and let others know the little things that make a repair job less frustrating. I will keep you posted.
  20. Is there any way to reduce the force required to pull in the clutch lever? It just seems harder than it should. RR
  21. Has anyone ever experienced the shifter on their first gen feel sorta flexy or mushy on the down stroke? I just dosnt seem to have a solid stop feeling when stepping down on the lever. It seems to shift ok but I have become nevous that I might over rotate the shifter and go beyond the limits of the linkage as it happened one time a while back. When this happens the lever winds up just sort of hanging there pointing at the ground. Any experience or fix information is appreciated before I start to tear things down.
  22. Well,I finally got some of the other bugs worked out,the only major one left is the terrible shifting. It upshifts most of the time if you give it a HARD upshift.Sometimes you need to give it a tap down before it will go up.Downshifting is worse, you almost always have to move the lever up between shifts down.2nd and 1st are the worst.Sometimes it skips 2nd and goes straight to neutral. The bike has 140,000 km(~88000 miles). It almost acts like the spring on the ratchet mechanism is weak.It used to shift better cold than hot but now it seems to be the same all the time.So far I have; --Bled clutch twice so completely new fluid there. --Made sure the master cylinder was only half full in case the vent was blocked. (incidentally it doesnt shift worth a darn even without the clutch...every other bike I've had would) --shimmed up the sloppy linkage at the shift lever and down at the engine case --Changed the oil (tried seafoam for a few miles in the oil before it was changed --made sure all the pins were present behind their tabs in the starwheel (behind clutch basket)and made sure all the tabs were bent over tight. I guess I should pull the clutch basket and start looking for stuff to replace?Maybe order a new shift drum assembly? I'm kinda getting sick of spending money on it though,I've put about 500km on it and spent about $1400 on it since I got it...Would have been more without DonB's help (Thanks!) It runs great now though (new carb diaphragms, valve adjust, carb sync) Still not as much power as I was expecting but maybe my GS1100gk spoiled me:confused24:. Any suggestions? Thanks Steve
