  1. Yesterday I traveled from a ride in and the day was hot hot hot, and to make it even worse got caught in horrific traffic back jam due to accidents or what ever. I noted my bike was getting on the hot side of things so cut engine off whenever I could. Also noted the volt meter stayed at just above 12 volts at higher rpm rather than at 14 as usual. This morning it pops right back up to 14. Any reason or explanation for this? I already cleaned the wire connectors from stator and put dialectric grease on it some time ago.
  2. Those who have added the Water/Volt or Amp/Oil press gauge set to your RSV, what does your temp gauge read under the following conditions... (Bike is all warmed up and you've been riding for a while) During normal hwy cruising on a warm summer day?? During normal hwy cruising on a HOT summer day?? During extended stop & go city traffic on a warm or even hot summer day?? Reason I asked is I noticed mine was hitting the 230 mark while we were backed up in a long, long line traffic as it slowly merged from 3 lanes to 1 in a construction zone last evening... temps outside weren't hot at all ... in fact, Nina was wearing her leather jacket and was mentioning she felt a bit cold not long prior to that. Generally while cruising on a warm day the gauge will read around 215. Granted, these are pretty cheap gauges so no doubt they're not very accurate... but I'm just curious...
  3. I just found out today one of my co-workers went down on his V-Rod when he hit some loose gravel and sand on the road, sent him off the side of the road and bike fell over on him trapping him under the bike, a couple of passer by stopped and helped him out from under the bike. He has some rash and a broken collar bone, this guy usually wears ATGATT, but it was so hot out he decided not to, might have fared a little better if he had. Damage to the bike was mostly cosmetic. Lets be careful out there and just because its hot out its no excuse to ride unprotected...........accidents are gonna happen but we can lessen the damage to ourselves if we wear ATGATT!!!!
  4. I live in Fl so my washer and dryer are in my garage the other day I received a call from the sheriffs dept that water was coming out of my house, I got off work early and rushed home to find the hot water side of the washing machine hose split and sprayed water all throughout half the garage it tripped out the hot water heater and dryer plus all the outlets and had Sheetrock falling from the ceiling and walls. I was able to save the table saw and 1 router but lost my porter cable soft start router and dewalt cordless drill, so if you have a washer you do not shut the water off to I recommend buying the stainless braided hoses unless you want to spend money like me.
  5. How hot does it have to get before the fan kicks in?
  6. Many of us have no choice but to travel the Highways and when you encounter such a delay in traffic patterns on highways such a road construction or accidents, getting trapped, then engine/clutch getting extremely hot, personal heat fatigue , etc........."Do you ride the shoulder ?". Please , I'm asking your opinion to a direct question, NOT "I only ride the back roads ,blah , blah , blah..............! ". Coming back from vacation, Becky and I encountered numerous highway congestion due to traffic accidents to road constructions. Yes we took mainly back roads for scenery and piece of mind. One instance back on the Highway, It was HOT ! Suddenly traffic backed up for over 10 miles, all traffic converted to one lane near end. No explanation was given over the CB from oncoming CBer's from the opposite direction. I was contemplating driving the shoulder of the road to get the wind in our face and cool the scoot. Scoot was getting hot as we were , if not hotter. I hesitated pulling into the shoulder due to maybe some cager might get mad and either swerve into us or open their passenger car door on us. While thinking about it , 4 MC (I think the were 1%'rs) came riding by in the shoulder. So I followed on in line, lagging back about 50 yards or so. Shoulder was clean with a few baby gators and a few beer cans. They weren't mine either.................... 5 miles from where we were , we hit an exit and took the back roads till we got home. I know myself if I were in my cage sitting in line for my turn and another cage came by in the shoulder (other than an emergency vehicle) , I would be pi$$ed. But a MC, I would be more forgiving knowing the extra stress we encounter. So again I ask , "Would you drive the shoulder?" BEER30
  7. My brothers father-n-law (Bill) has an 07 Midnight TD. He called me and stated that his bike was getting hot. Very hot on his legs, almost unbearable. Since then he spoke to a Yamaha mechanic about what he had. The mechanic asked if he made any changes recently. Bill informed him that he switched his oil from Yamalube to Rotella T 15-40. The mechanic said that, the oil was his problem. Today he changed the oil back to Yamalube and said that it is no longer running hot. So basically he states that the heat was coming from the lower end of the engine. I know many folks on this forum use oil other than Yamalube, so have anybody had this experience before? I am running Rotella in my 07 TD, and have not noticed any issues.
  8. Has anyone felt their rear differential after a ride to see how hot it gets. I've never really paid attention to mine in my Millenium. I see that some of the older diffs have cooling fins on them, but the newer ones don't. My issue: I put a 2008 Venture rear (the whole pumpkin - after machining the hole in the boss for the shock and plugging the speedo sensor hole) into my 1998 VMax to lower the rpms. Seems to work well and I like the 500 or so lower rpms at highway speed. Gas mileage is better too. But the diff seems to get pretty doggone hot to the touch after a ride. Now I know that I live in the south and it has been really hot lately. But I've had this bike since '99 and I didn't notice that heat with the original set-up. Could have been hot too, just never boticed it. I hear no cracking or creaking going on back there. Do you think I have something discombobulated? Any ideas?
  9. Guys, I just got back from a 150 mile ride where I tried out a new (to me) cooling product. I bought a Silver Eagle cooling vest. (saw it advertised in Cycle World) Basically you soak it in water and then, when the temps get too high while riding, you put this on UNDER your jacket and it will help keep you cool. Well today after about 50 miles the thermometer on my bike was showing 102F and I was getting pretty warm. Stopped and took the vest out of the trunk, put it on and replaced my jacket. I was immediately a whole lot cooler than I'd been before, and the cooling lasted 'till I was back home. It REALLY made a difference and was well worth the money IMHO. Makes hot weather riding a lot more pleasant, especially when wearing full gear. I'd never tried this type of thing before, but it REALLY helped me, and it is hot and humid here in Kentucky. If you ride ATGATT in hot weather it's worth a shot....
  10. Just got her back from the Docs. She went in and started telling him she would like to have one of those walking boots. She now has a bright shiney Hot Pink Cast!!! Not a happy Lady. No weight on it at all for 6 weeks!!!! Anybody got a spare room???? Going to be rough around here!!!
  11. Hey, it was a hot day. Pics from the gifting of the jacket.
  12. I forgot to mention. We do have a hot tub so bring your swimsuits if you think you might want to get in and relax. NO NUDITY. I'm thinking that some of you just don't look good naked any more...if you ever did.
  13. Was talking to brother-in-law yesterday (also a biker) about Clearview with vent and he was telling me a lot of his buddies who have them say they don't like the vent because they get road dirt 'n bugs commin thru them, they're a real PITA to clean, and when it's hot out, all yer gettin is more hot air. What say ye all those who have these?
  14. All of my other trailers have larger wheels (12"/14") than my motorcycle trailer (8"). On a recent 400 mile stroll at mostly x-way speeds, I noticed that the motorcycle trailers hubs were very warm to the touch. I wouldn't call them "hot" but it was very close. Before this trip I had hand greased the bearings and they all looked perfect. The only thing I questioned was the free play that I left in the bearing. Before I took them apart there was, what I would call, too much play. The next tighter notch in the nut that would allow the cotter pin in, was....not snug, but left very little play. I haven't pulled them back apart yet, to see how they look now. At any rate, I'm wondering how hot these things normally run, my experience says warm is normal, but I've never run 8" wheels before. How hot do yours run?
  15. Been a while since I posted so I thought I would let everyone know what's going on with my 83 Venture Royale. It is officially hot here in Phoenix now. Too hot to ride. My mechanic is taking the bike this week and will sync the carbs and fixed the throttle. The throttle response is poor when I come off the gas - it takes too long to get back down to idle. The other issue I am going to have him investigate is the heat. The bike just feels like it is very hot in the area around my legs - much hotter than other bikes I have ridden. I want him to check out the cooling system and make sure everything is good to go. Once I get the mechanics done, its off to the painter. I am having the bike painted in a metallic grey (same color as my 2004 F150). Looking forward to seeing the finished product!
  16. The Hot Rod Power Tour starts tomorrow (Saturday) and begins in Newton, Iowa. It is estimated that we will have over 4,000 cars at the Iowa Speedway. There is no cost to view the cars! I think that's neat cause Goodguys are getting expensive. They pull out Sunday. If you are in Iowa it would make for a nice ride!!
  17. Noticed the other day my ignition switch was very hot at the end of a ride. When I pulled my key out the key was very hot to the touch. I don’t have passing lamps and have never had this problem. Any thoughts?
  18. Just wondered if anyone has found their final drive getting hot? Put my hand on the diff housing, (where the oil is), after 100 ks today & could only just keep it on there. Didn't hold thermometer to it but it was hot enough to concern me. Never felt it before so don't know if this is normal? Wheel rim is warm. Oil level is good. Brake disc is cool. Thanks guys Tony.
  19. hey all, Been away a little bit so just saying hi. Me and renate been running around like the proverbial chicken with no head the last few months. We,ve been looking at homes while the market, the interest rates and the tax credit were still around. Finally found what we wanted and closed on the 5th. Not going to bore ya with the details but we got a helluva deal on a great home. One extra that came with the house was a 6 person hot tub on the deck so if anyone ever needs to soak the bones after a long ride and your close to Zimmerman MN give a shout to me or Renate. Till then, almost riding time up here. Can,t wait. al
  20. I am contemplating changing to different electrical horns and relocating them. In preparation I am checking the wiring for polarity, on/off with the ignition, etc. I am accessing the right side horn. You know, the one that they have aimed right at the exhaust! I expected to find the pink wire hot with the key on, but I find both the pink and brown wires to be hot when the key is on. I have looked at the wiring diagram, guess I just do not understand how the horn button makes these OEM horns work. I expected to be able to ground the after-market horns and connect a lead to the other connector that would become hot when the horn button was activated. OR I would hook up a lead that was hot when the key is on and the other connector would go to the horn button and be grounded when the button is activated. With both leads testing hot with the key on I am lost. I know one or more of you wizards can explain this to me and point me in the right direction. For clarification, I want to install a pair of compact boat horns out front (106 db each). I know most of you prefer the air horn, but this is my story and I'm sticking to it. Thanks for any help I can get. Mel
  21. Last few days (and nights) have been sooooo hot Still 25c all night last night, and 42c during the day :scorched: Maybe some of that white stuff wouldn't be too bad
  22. Well the local multi-brand bike dealer here had their big night show for Yamaha. Had a few Yamaha factory reps on hand and FREE HOT DOGS! The hot dogs turned out to be the highlight of the night. LOL! Just sayin'. Not a RSV in sight........a T-D, a row of V-Stars, plenty of crotch rockets and a 2010 V-Max. So I finally got a rep cornered and posed the question........Will there be a RSV in 2011? Got a shrug. He had no idea. But he did say "if" there was we could expect a choice of two colors. Like I expected more? But on the bright side........I got to park my butt on the V-Max. I likey! Felt like a mini-bike after the '84. Would have been nice to fire it up and go for a spin but that wasn't going to happen. And back in the used row they had a '89 Venture with 40,000 on it for $4,998.00. Burgundy with ghost flames. After a good look it looked like the new paint was there for a reason. But the hot dogs were good. Free. Always good. So much for the big event.
  23. Maybe some of you are old enough to remember way back when in the days of Model A Fords, Oasis Desert Bags that hung in front of radiators, and evoporative swamp coolers that hung in the side window. Mom and Dad used to cook meals on the exhaust manifold of the motor. Ate a lot of hot meals while traveling cross country from NY to CA in the '40's that way. Pot roasts, beef stews, hot dogs, baked potatoes. Now that was roughing it. Just wondering if anyone has ever tried doing this on a Venture??? Maybe those that tow a tent trailer??? Found this site on Google. Manifold Cooking Plus a bunch of others.....
  24. Well, finally had a problem I can't solve immediately. The old 87 started running hot- right up to the red zone. Sounds like a sticking thermostat to me. Then it would drop. Then run hot again. And I'm in Southern Mexico, with daytime highs in the 80's. Never run this hot... So I took the old one out.It is running about 1/3 to 1/2 up the green zone. Nice and cool. I think when I come back to the US and the cold winds howl, I'll have to do the trucker trick with a block in front of the radiator...I don't want to pull this ***** again without a new one on hand! Thanks for your comments!
  25. Got a new recipe for homemade peperoni.....made it with venison and pork.........WOW..WOW..WOW.......something tells me it gonna be as hot exiting my body as it was entering it... yeeeooooowwwwlllllllllll.....MAN THATS GOOD STUFF !!!!!!!!:rotf::sign67:
