  1. well today after a long year of not riding. i took out the yamaha maxim i was going to give to the girlfriend before we broke up. the venture finaly made its way to a friends house for the tires and rotor and break work. all was going well but i dont know if any one else ever felt this way? but when i hit the highway. i was scared for about 20 miles. then i started to come around. a friend said im rusty? maybe should see about a refresher course? i took the motorcycle safety course 2 years ago. but that was on a little 250cc bike. i passed with a perfect test run. no mistakes back then. now its time to see what im doing wrong? im thinking take the maxim. through that course. then move up to the big boy? i do have a hard time makeing a u turn on the venture. i once did a low side on it. came in to a parking space thinking i could turn it to face outwards and found out i ran out of room? didnt want to hit the parked car so just kind of let it slide down on the crash bar. no damage but man what a bear to get back up. a good friend has now taught me how to get these heavy bikes back up. i was doing it all wrong. never try to muscle that bike he said. he showed me how to get it back upright from both sides. well that has been my day. hope to ride again tomorrow
  2. Hi guys, my buddy and I are "venturing" out early this season, at the latter part of May to hit Rolling Thunder in Washington DC with our MC and from there we're booting it down to the Florida Keys and then back up and around through the top north east corner of Texas and back up through the middle back home.. we're taking roughly 3 weeks to do all this, to see as much as possible and hit as many states as possible.. 28 in all. Starting from Halifax NS, entering the USA through Maine, we just want to hit the slabs and get some miles under our wheels. (love the highway riding..) This is the link to the map lines we're planning on doing in order to loop around and hit as many states as possible (600k file) http://www.eastcoastphotos.com/venture/usa-trip-a.jpg Obviously the red line makes no consideration to any actual highways along the way but mostly just shows the intended path we plan to take in order to get us through the areas to hit each state, even if it's just a corner chunk of it.. Has anyone done anything similar to this that might be able to point of a few features or areas we should see along this route? We won't have time to hit every beautiful back road there is out there but would like to hit the most popular ones like the Dragon's Tail etc.. We'll be hoping to run into as many friends as possible along the way.. we still owe Sky Doc and his beautiful missus another Rib Dinner =) And hope to be able to meet up with other Venture enthusiasts.. If you have any info or recommendations for sights to see, things to do, stuff to be aware of.. etc etc.. it would be much appreciated.. I did over 35,000 miles on the bike last summer.. I think I might try to surpass it this year.. because in 2011, I plan to do up the other 20 states I haven't visited on a bike.. (already did Hawaii and Alaska on a bike =) Thanks in advance folks =)
  3. Today was one of those days that really makes a body feel great! Had breakfast with a bunch of friends and then hit the road for a couple hundred miles. Temps in the mid sixties and riding with great friends, WOW!!!!!!
  4. The numbers are in and we've hit an all-time record for the month of January. The average daily temp was 7.1 celcius. The previous record, last hit in 2006 was 6.3 celcius and our highest temp for Jan was 14 celcius. WOW!
  5. There is a black plastic piece on the outside where it tells you to hook a hose. Supposedly this puts the hose up in the bike somewhere so as to pull the air in. Did you all leave this on and hook the hose up? If so, how does it look? Also looks like you would hit this with your foot and knock it off. I have left it off for now.
  6. (old issue thought I would throw it out there) Headlights do not work anymore. Doesn't matter when I hit the dimmer switch. They used to work when I hit the brights, now they don't work at all. Newest issue, bought new battery this past summer. Car ran fine. Let it sit for about a week and when I tried to start it up, nothing. Barring a bad battery cell, what else could it be? Father in law thought maybe voltage regulator. I got a new battery tender for christmas and took it like 3-4 days to get a green light. That is w/out it hooked up to the car. I figure a mouse chewed a wire, but not sure which one. When I look in the engine compartment, I can't find any frayed wires. Heck it is 40 yrs old now. Wouldn't be suprised if it is the original starter.
  7. The other day when we had a high of about 22º, I warmed my car to change the oil and while out on the carport, I started the bike. I turned on the ignition key, flipped the kill switch about 6 times, pulled the choke lever about 3/4 and hit the button. About a second later, it fired to life and ran about two seconds. I hit it again and it again fired to life and ran surprising well. I let it run until the temp gauge got close to the red and shut her down. With what I am going through in my life right now, the good Lord knew how much I needed to hear that sweet sound. RandyA
  8. A deer with the company van. The roads are snow covered and I could not miss it.Thats 2 since New Years. Tonight I'm driving my truck to get Ramona. I'm going to try my best to hit one. Maybe I will miss it. Trying to avoid them doesn't work.
  9. I hit a deer tonight on my way to pick Ramona up from work. The good news is since my brakes are out I hit it with Ramona's truck. The bad news is I hit it with Ramona's truck. I just can't win.
  10. My other computer shut down and now when you try to turn it on it just says beeps and says Alert! previous shut down due to thermal event. Strike F1 to continue, F2 to run the setup utility. If you do F1 it shuts it back off. If you hit F2 it takes you to some wierd screen that tells about the computer. Does anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it?????
  11. last night or early this morning i should say. a young man was driking at the local bar about a half a block. from my place. he left the bar against his friends whishes to take a cab. took off on his harley . must have hit a speed of 60mph. he side swiped 6 cars takeing off the drivers mirrors on all of them. i was the last one he hit. he suffered. a broken shoulder. faceal lacerations. not to mention. a dui. reckless driving.. total damages to the cars are over 3 grand. his bike was impounded. he has no valid motorcycle endorsement. and no insurance on the bike. so please think before you drink and get on your bike. it aint worth it. to think you can make it home
  12. So I replaced the dual horns(don't know if they're stock) with a hi and lo fiamm. I turn the key and the and the horns start blaring. I check the wires with a meter. One is hot all the time regardless of wether I hit the button. The other has nothing. When I take a reading between the two it read 3.4-4volts and then 12 when I hit the button. What's the deal? The horns are loud as hell. Totally confused. Thanks in advance!
  13. This is the wifes computor. I'm locked out mine. Can't boot it up. We had a ton of dropped power today due to the big storm that hit California, and the last time I tried to reboot the system I get this "\windows\system32\config\system is corrupt or missing" It goes on to tell me to stick the original setup CD in... which I never had... and hit 'r' for repair. The thing came from DELL with windows XP Media already loaded. Any ideas???
  14. What brings a 290lb man to his knees? Two words KIDNEY STONES! Today started well.Went to work at 6:30 all is well. By 7:15 i was a mess.It was like someone hit a light switch. Sitting in the doctors office by 8:30 and cat scan by 11:00. Passed one tonight another to go. Thank god for Hydrocondone. Thanks Chris
  15. Yesterday my wife and I were returning from a ride. We were approaching the highway where we turn left about 2 miles from home. I saw a light from a bike in my rear view mirror approaching. There is a traffic light where we turn left on a four lane to go home. The light was red so I starting slowing and moved into the left turn lane. The other bike, a harley softail deuce, came up beside me and I waved at him. I thought he was going to stay in the right lane to go straight or turn right. He came by and swerved into the left turn lane right in front of me. I had to slam on brakes to stop without hitting him. I can't repeat what I was calling him to myself. When the light turned green we turned left and he went over into the right lane. I thought OK buddy, I am going to see what you have but then remembered I was riding 2 up and he was riding single so the venture might not keep up. As he turned I could hear the roar of the pipes and knew he was twisting the throttle wide open. I twisted my throttle wide open and he was leaving me. When I hit the rev limit and my engine started sputtering I hit second gear and the venture lurched forward and I started gaining on him. When I was on his rear fender I hit third and swerved into the left lane and went by him like he was standing still. He was winding it out but I was steadily leaving him. I hit fourth and at 100 mph saw his light in my rear view mirror. It was time for me to turn right and go home so I backed off to let him come by so I could get back in the right lane. When he came by he gave me the finger. I guess it hurt his feelings because a metric bike riding 2 up blew his big bad harely away.
  16. Woke up this morning at 5am and no one in the house wanted to talk to me, logged into my favourite site to read a few post. I landed on the Embarrassing Moments Had a good laugh reading all the mishaps people owned up to. Well here goes. 1st drop: I was 16 yrs old and my first bike was a Honda 400 I woke to find the bike on its side. I took it out to early in the spring and the kick stand sunk in the mud during the night. 2nd drop: I was 17 yrs old pulled into the place were I worked in a big hurry to get my pay check. Jumped off the bike and ran in the front door, realising what I did turned to see her falling over because I forgot to put the kick stand down. 1st crash I was 18 yrs stupid. It’s been 28 yrs since I have laid one down (brand new Honda 500 Custom). Young and fearless I would play on a hill going to my friend’s house. I would come over the top of a hill and start down the hill, half way down the hill the pipeline crossed the road creating a jump. The hill bottomed out and the grade changed to up hill again. My friend lived at the end of the road, 90 degree turn left into his yard. The road ended at his driveway and the Canadian white pine forest started. Done right: Hit the jump at 50 m/hr and catch some air, apply full breaks to make the left turn. Not a lot of room for error. Done wrong: Hit the jump at 50 m/hr and catch some air, and have the throttle stuck wide open…… apply full breaks with the motor screaming. I was able to hit the kill button turn the bike sideways and skidded into the pine forest. The bike hit a small tree stood up and rested on the tree in an upright position. (Unbelievably not a scratch on the bike). I was thrown from the bike when it suddenly stopped, I hit a tree or two, and laid in a ball, I was not seriously hurt, no broken bones, scratches and pride. My friends dad was outside in the driveway and watched the entire show and came to my aid. This was the day I learnt to respect the bikes. Stupid Stupid Stupid I have not laid one down since then. I have ridden with a number of new riders since then and always tell them, you will drop it, you will fix it and if no one is around no one will know if you can keep from telling some one. Just don’t be stupid.

  18. Going down a four lane hwy. in Pontiac today, two lanes going both ways. I was in the outside lane and a guy decided to get on it and pass a car in front of him in the inside lane. That means coming over into my lane. I moved over very quick but had no place to go. I was now at his left rear door and getting closer. I finally found the horn. "The Horn" is the WOLO Air Horn. I hit that button and stayed on it. He had his window down and then he over reacted to the LOUD noise. He cut the car back to the right and almost hit the car in front of him that he was trying to pass, as he was slamming on his brakes. The car in front of him was also braking because they thought a freight train was coming. I know for a fact he would have never heard the stock horn. All turned out well. Next time I won't keep it on so long.
  19. Hi everyone. Just left for a 6k run and I'm I have a bad ground somewhere on the #5 "signal" fuse. This just happened. The first 1k was fine. The bike ran fine and charges fine. With the key on(engine off, the volt meter is way down. Around 9 volts. When I hit the brake, the gauge goes up to normal. With the engine on, the voltmeter stays at the very low voltage and when I hit the brake, the gauge goes up to 13 or so. Usually, the gauge shows 14+ with the motor running. Testing my trailer lights, the fuse blew. With nothing connected, the fuse is hotter than hell.On the bordeline of blowing. What all is attached to the "signal"fuse? What should I start disconnecting? Overall, the lights are fine, cranks strong, runs fine. But this fuse is going to blow and I'm afraid if I take off, I'll burn up the stator cuz something is drawing a lot. Please Help! Thanks!
  20. It was me. Last friday afternoon on the way home from work on I-70 just east of Columbus, OH then traffic came to a very abrupt halt. Mostly due to a bunch of "I have to get in front of as many people as I can" folks who were in the left hand lane that was ending soon. Those people caused everyone to slam on their brakes because they were forceing themslves into the lane in front of everyone. The car right in front of me had to stop very quickly, I hadn;'t given myseklf enough room I guess, hit my brakes tried to get into the other lane only to see two other cars coming up to beat out as many other cars that they could. I had no choice but to hit the car in front of me. I managed to slide the bike sideways so I wouldn't hit front wheel first and go over the handlebars. I bounced off the car, and then bounced off the freeway with my bike on top of me. Ended up passsiing out and woke up as a paramedic (who was driving behind me) was holding my neck in traction until the squad got there. I was going about 30mph at impact, my helmet, I don't always wear it, saved my skull. the squad rushed me to Grant Medical Center in Columbus with suspected head injuries based on the fact I had lost blacked out, was repeating myself to the paramedic on the squad, and the looks of my helmet. After x-rays and a CT scan they found no broken bones although I do have some road rash and muscle soreness. I couldn't walk on my left leg and that is getting better each day. The right side of the bike sustained the most damage and the insurance company has been great to work with. I should know more in the next two days about whether they will repair it or decide to total it out. No one else got hurt and I am so thankful for that. All in all I am one very blessed man. There is one thing they did find wrong when they did the CT scan. I have some enlarged lymph nodes in my chest area. The doctor gave me a list of things it could be. Or it could be nothing. I will be seeing the doctor next week to see if they want to do a biopsy to determine what is wrong. I have a history of cancer in my family so I do have some concerns. I would appreciate any prayers for that situation. Ride safe!
  21. My oldest (stepson) went down Saturday and walked away with nary a scratch!! No gloves, no helmet, no armour, the foot brake lever and highway peg are bent, thee are minor scratches on the air filter cover and exhaust and he's got road rash on the front fork and rear fender. Oh and he needs a new tank on his HD. Sean says last he saw he was doing 50, I saw the "turn", I'm thinking more like 80; apparently his front wheel jumped the curb but the rear did not followhe left the bike and landed in a freshly mulched shrub bed. Still lucky he didn't hit one of the many river rocks or trees there. I'm gratefull he's OK, as far as the underlying cause: lets call it operator error; he was ticked, he had been drinking and he was going somewhere he did not want to go (lets leave it at that)
  22. Got hit a couple times w/ some overdraft fees recently and getting tired of it. I tried going through National City customer service and hasn't helped. Seems they are charging me for fees that they shouldn't be because there is money in the account. Seems after they hit me with the fees then I get overdrawn. And I am getting charged $34 a hit. Funny thing is another account of ours got hit once last year and it was $32. Everytime I ask them why the difference, they skirt around the issue. They won't give me a straight answer. Anything to make a buck I suppose. So looking for a new bank. What does your bank charge you (if anything)?
  23. anyone know the exact rpm at redline and exact rpm for the rev limiter?? been getting a little hotroddy lately and just don't want to over doi it.. havent hit the rev limiter yet but need to know what its set at. thanx
  24. I was going to a meeting with a sheriff in Avery county NC, and I was on 70 going to the mountains when some one lost some stuff off there truck. I thought I missed all three piece's but #3 took a bounce and hit my bike. I think it was a piece of metal it hit my left rear turn signal caught the corner an chipped the chrome an took the amber lens completely off. If any buddy has one they can part with let me know, I will check Ebay also. The trip to the mountains would have been perfect I will be working with the sheriff the ride was great except for the piece taking out my turn signal out. Thanks, Dale
  25. All of a sudden my front forks are squeaking when I hit bumps. Any Ideas? No visible leaks that I can find.
