  1. I’m planning to change my Final Gear oil, because My Midnight Venture has now almost 10.000 miles on it…. and I have a few questions...….can I leave my bike on the kick stand or does the bike needs to be level ? …and do I need to remove the saddlebag or can I change the oil this way …I do have a 2oz Syringe with a hose.
  2. Well, the checks I been waiting on finally cleared the bank. SPent 400 dollars with Flatout today, Chris called me at noon and told me that all parts are available in the warehouses, only one part needs to come from Japan. (I'll tell you about that later. Something to do with not wanting to take 10 minutes and make the clutch holding tool!!!). All parts should be in by the end of the week. Saved 25 bucks by having him hold the parts for pick-up since I only live 10 miles from there. These parts are just the internals, like all o-rings, gaskets, clutch springs, 2nd gear repair (gonna undercut my gears), water pump rebuild,etc.. Will post complete list if anybody wants to see it. Next week I'll order my exterior stuff, going to replace all the hoses, water route orings, thermostat, etc. Doing this once, and then be done with it! Flatouts website makes it easy to order, can print out the microfiche listings, that way you have a record of what you've got when it comes time to figure out what all those bags have in them!!! Oh well ,back to the grind! Dan
  3. I had ordered the Bubs exhaust and before I received them I'd drilled 4 half inch holes in each stock muffler and they sounded pretty good. I decided to have the "bubs" put on yesterday and they're a little louder than I thought they'd be but I love them!! They have a nice throaty growl and people will notice them. They really sound good idling and also when you gear down. Heck, they sound good no matter how you're driving. Just thought I'd tell you about it in case there are some riding the fence on them. They're great!! Eddie Flinchum--Winchester, Ky.
  4. I just bought a 84 venture and, being young and stupid, had to take it out to *try* it out the next day (its still around freezing up here in Wisconsin). So after I got used to such a big bike, I was hammering up through the gears and, in fourth gear, the engine sped up faster than the bike. The clutch was slipping. It did this again, going up a hill shifting into second gear. I dont think I missed releasing the clutch before hitting the gas, I have driven a lot of smaller motorcycles in the past... Is my clutch going? If not, have I done so much damage to it that it will go out soon??? I know this isnt good, but how worried should I be? Also, the guy who sold me the venture insisted that everyone takes them all the way to the red line, and some beyond, no problem. Is this true???
  5. Ok here it is, I bought an '83 venture royale late last summer rode it a few times before I had to put it up for the winter. Now that summer is almost here again I decided to change all the fluids. My question is how do I know how much "final gear" oil to use? Read in here somewhere that in the toolkit (mine is long gone) there was a device for just this sorta thing. Like I stated mine is long long gone. So do I just fill it up or ........ Thanks in advance.
  6. 06 RSTD, 22k miles. ridden daily and dealer maintained (maint contract). anyway- went out Saturday morning - nothing happned when i hit the start button. checked the kill switch (was set for run) and neutral light (was green) - kickstand - was down. hit it again - nothing. lights don't dim. horn & signals work! played with various combinations of clutch lever, kick stand, gear position, kill switch, ignition switch - still nothin. in gear - bump the engine several times - more of the same. after a 4 hour wait for the tow truck - but that's another VERY FRUSTRATING STORY!!!! - scoot was hauled to the local dealer. "o yea" says my favorite tech "it started right up when it got here!"... good thing he beleives me - said they'll take it apart and have a look see.
  7. Well I quit for the night. Had it all together with an extra spacer washer to take up some of the slop on the driven gear, then after I torqued it all down the tranny was stiff and hard to turn, so I took it all apart again, removed the washer, set it up loose and verything was ticka di booo. Put the bolts back in, after cleaning everything again and new gasket stuff, and now it's the same again. It's hard to turn and a real bugger to shift, feels like it's jumping through the rotations. Any ideas?? Is this normal until it gets full oil or should I look for something else?
  8. My buddy, Juan came over today and asked if I would post pictures of his Early 83 VR on the site for him, hes the 3rd owner and the bike has 40,000 miles and no second gear issue in really great shape he lives in clovis NM also' so here they are....
  9. I was in the parts store today checking out the gear oils and I noticed that none of them had the GL4 spec that the Venture service manual calls for. All were GL5. Does anyone know if the ratings are backward compatible? Can GL5 be used for a GL4 application? what oil do you recommend? Dennis
  10. Today I had to put one of the pins back in my shift drum again. This is the third time in as many weeks. This time the metal tab that bends over the pin broke off, So i welded the pin to the plate, ruined it for future repairs; but it works for now. (every shop needs a small mig welder). I think that when i miss third and land in second gear it is some how causing pressure enough on the shift drum to push the pin out, I don't understand this happening; but something is doing it and it is always after landing in second. it could be that it has something to do with the shift lever being out of adjustment ( heel to toe shifter) causing me to land in second. All this aside, it's time to do a second gear job and a shift drum repair. I have aquired a donor bike/motor so i will be pulling the tranny from it as soon as i finish anpther job i'm doing so it may be a week or so. I plan to make repairs along the line of the repair that randy has made to his. So Randy I'm looking for all the info you have. I am posting a picture of the tranny for reference, If i am understanding your previous posts. The location i will be working on is shaft #1 and gear set #5 which is the second gear pinion. Is #10 the washer you fliped over ? and tell me again about how you cut the dogs on the side of the gear. I think you said that you cleaned up the wear by flatening out the wear on the end of the post which caused a little slack in the gear set but wasen't enough to really notice. then you cut out .020 from the dog, my question here is how did you shape the dog. Is it a slope with the .020at the base, or is it more of a hook or notch shape?

  12. I going to replace the motor in my 84. It is starting to have problems in second gear. Second gear still works but it jumps under hard throttle. So sooner or later I'm going to put a new motor in her. I really don't have the time to tear down the motor to repair the tran's. I can replace a motor in about three days. I was wondering what range of years can I replace with?? Can a 1300 be exchanged to a 1200 frame?? I beleave after 85 they took care of the second gear problem , is this correct?? Thanks Kurt
  13. Dicided that the time had come for the major operation. With a little help help from a friend (Wizard765) we removed the heart of the machine. Second gear was to be fixed!!! HuH? Where do you find second gear? Couldn't be that hard could it? Must be underneath,,,,,,,,, so let's turn this baby upside down on the workmate and start taking out those little round things,,,,,,,,, yep that works,,,,,,,, oh no what's all this,,,,,,, some forgot to drain the blood first?,,,,, nah just some left overs, thank goodness because you got to put that stuff back in again you know, otherwise it won't run so good,,,,,,,what did you do with all those little sewing up dudads,,,,,,,,,lets put them in separate baggies so we can tell wher they came from,,,,,,,,,,,,now lets see which baggie goes where,,,,,,,,,,,,oh it don't matter, they all fit soemwhere,,,,,,,,,,here, throw them in acoffee can,,,,,I hear that works real good,,,,,, ooooh, lala,,,,,,, we're supposed to make sense of all this?,,,,,,, let's put it back before we forget where it all goes,,,,,,,,,let's just take one more layer off, maybe it will be self explanitory,,,,,,,ya high hopes, now we got more stuff on the bench, how can we work on anything this way,,,,,,,,what's all these pookie looking things,,,,let's read the book,,,,oh that's the gears,, look we found them,,why didn't they mark which ones were second, they all look first to me,,,,,,,,maybe there is another layer that's why they call it second,,,,,I always wondered,,,,,no we did it,,,, they all slid off just like that,,,,,,,,,,did you take a picture to see which one goes on first,,,,,there must be a forward and backwards,,,,,someone posted that he turned it around and it worked just fine,,,,,,,,,,ya but that was the washer not the whole motor,,,,, you don't think it will work the same,,,,,,,after you're done with it you'll need more coffee cans,,,,,,,,just think of all the help I can be to others who are missing parts,,,,might just have the right one left over,, I know, enough of all this, you want pictures RIGHT? First 2 rows are Scamper, or what's left of him. Last three pic, are Goldie undergoing a facelift.
  14. This is a good report. I'm not too smart when it comes to wearing the proper gear and like my denim jeans. Also, these are EXPENSIVE. For those who like the best though, they sure sound good. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r4/motoport/police-kevlar-pants/
  15. I've got an 89 VR. Looking to buy 06 RSV from dealer 2000 miles away. Had a friend go check it out for me...he's used to riding a Honda Shadow...never ridden a Venture. He said it was great except he noticed when in 4th gear at about 45 mph he was hearing what he called a gear whine...kept going until he shifted. Said it happened at in 3rd also. Said it wasn't unbearable but was noticeable. The bike has had the clutch basket replaced (which the original owner told me helped a LOT). I think the 1st gen & 2nd gen engines are basically the same engine. I've read all the threads here about the whine & chirp and now I'm leary of plunking down the money if it's something that's overtly noticeable. I'm wondering if I would notice that whine as much myself, since I've ridden my VR for 17 years & am used to that engine (never noticed anything myself). Any ideas? Thanks for the help...JR
  16. I just posted an ad for Shoei Helmets under riding gear in the Classifieds. PM me if you're interested. http://xchoppers.com/albums/Xchopper-Products/Shoei_RJ_Air.gif
  17. I saw this on the delphi forum. Is this really finally available, and just in time for winter and the additional heated gear?? Buckeye Performance apparently has these now, but not listed on their website yet. http://www.buckeyeperformance.com/ http://forums.delphiforums.com/vrider/messages/?msg=5874.1
  18. Looking for another bike. I like the idea of the V4 over the Goldwing or Voyager. Are all 1st gen Ventures prone to the 2nd gear problem or just some? If just a few years, what years should I stay away from? Any other problem areas I should check when looking at one? Thanks , Mike

    2nd Gear Fix Question

First a real thamk you to all the replies to the posts and the general helping attitude here... you guys all rock!!!!!!! ok now to the point... i am an auto mechanic but bikes are confusing sometimes, with a harley i can almost get to any thing quick but not so on my venture.... we've determined that the engine rattle i have is the 2nd gear, ok now heres the question... id be able to do this with full tools at a little shop with a harley/honda certified mechanic (old lady's padre) with lift.. but he's unsure about this one, never worked on yams before.. i tried to d/l the manual in pdf from here but it wont let me so... what has to be done to change out 2nd gear? how long? anything weird to expect? what am i going to break first and how much or wheres a good place to get a new set of gears? is there a trap door in the bottom? i dont take things to shops when i own tools!!!!! im up for it but not sure what to expect... the bike is my car so if its a day or 2 job then ill go for it other wise it will have to wait...
  20. 2006 Midnight Venture is ready for it's 1,000 mile oil changes. I didn't have a pleasent experience with the dealer so I thought I'd change myself. Engine oil looks simple to do, my question on the gear oil is do I need to remove the saddle bag in order to fill back up
  21. In the past few months I have been dealing with TriWing Trikes to obtain a DX Cruiser body. After selling us the body they have become rude. The only thing we have done is to question an EXTRA $125.00 shipping charge, and ask them which gear ratio they would recommend a 3.45.1 or a 3.27.1, oh I also asked if they had a tech line if ******* was not available. Hear is some of the negative correspondence. I hope this will give someone a heads up before they deal with them.   It costs us $75.00 to ship to Vancouver, and the Vancouver to your residence was $350.00 as the below message I received states. That is a total of $425.00. As you paid $300.00, you still owe $125.00, I was not aware that we put the gear ratio in our instructions. I don’t see how I can assist you. This was a project you decided to take on instead of purchasing a proper kit, so I would say you are on your own. I don’t have a tech person sitting here to ask your questions to and I don’t put kits together. I have a manual courtesy of Jerry-M and it does give gear ratio and recommended tire size PS. I went and picked the body up at the trucking company it was not delivered to our shop.
  22. Ok how many of you have got your children or Grandchildren into the love of riding Ventures? Frogman and I have already gotten the son into the love of riding so much that he wanted to dress up in his biker gear for Halloween. In most things he uses the name Venturepirate. Taken from his love of riding on the 84 Venture (the Red Baron) with Frogman and his interest in pirates.
  23. All HD Rockers have been recalled back to the factory for manufactoring defects. Also HD will not fix gear whine on all six speed models, but you can buy a gear to fix the problem! Is this a way for buyers to have to spend more money. Cable less throttles are giving problem too, with oil temps running at 290 degress or hotter. tew47
  24. Installed a 86-93 engine in a 83-85 frame? My 84 has a bad oil leak from 13 years of storage. The motor only has 23K on it and runs strong, shifts smooth, no 2nd gear problems yet. I have a 89 motor with only 15K. I would like to know how it runs. Can I swap the two with no problems using the 84 carbs, etc kind of a plug and play swap? This would let me clean up the 84 engine, repair the dry seals, and decide if I should attempt a early second gear fix before problems arise. I could reinstall the 84 engine later. Who knows the 89 might run good in the 84.
  25. Plan for this weekend is to change gear lube on Venture and Stratoliner. As Amsoil preffered Customer i have to chose between diferent lube weight.
