  1. Hello, I am new to this forum and I have actually posted this on another Venture themed forum, but I am looking for all the ideas I can get. I have an 83 Venture that is in bad need of help cosmetically. Mechanically the bike is sound and runs great, aside from the need for a spring tune up of course. But because of the cosmetic condition I have been considering what to do with the bike. That was until my friend sent me this picture of a 78 Goldwing. I was curious to know if any of you have seen anything like this done with a 1st Gen Venture. I would love any input you all may have and maybe even som pics of a stripped down venture. I would love to get as much info as I can get before I begin. anyway here is the pic.
  2. I opened up an RSV muffler and posted some pics in the picture forum. This may help anyone thinking of drilling baffles. AL GUY
  3. I'll try to keep this as short as possible, but it's something I've wanted say for a long time. I joined this wonderful forum in '06 (forget how I even found it) CRS ya know . I have a V-Star 1100, so most of the help info doesn't pertain to my bike, BUT it's the members here that keeps me logging in. I did find a V-Star 1100 forum for the kind of help and info I might need from time to time, but believe me, VR. org's members are truly family, and I know you know what I'm talking about. Mostly I just log in to catch up on all that's happening, and am content to "lurk" and still feel that I'm very much a part of this group. Our hearts go out for those in need or who have lost loved one's, even tho chances are we've never personally met them, and help is always offered. My close friends could never imagine what a bond there is on this forum, and I'll just keep that "our" secret. So......I just want to thank ALL of you that make this the best motorcycle forum, and a special thanks to Don and the moderators for their devotion to this forum. My best to all Jerry
  4. So, what do you think? Is the new XOG that much better, or just a bit different? Does anyone have one? All I know is what I read on the forum. It has less battery life and some issues to resolve. But plugged in to 12v, shouldn't matter, right? Steve
  5. OK folks...it's that time again. I have some updating to do on our software here and it is pretty major. I may even have to back it up before I do it this time. First of all, in preparation of a major upgrade, I will be slightly changing the URL of the forum. This will affect you only if you have the actual forum bookmarked and come straight here instead of to the home page. The URL is now http://www.venturerider.org/forum the new URL will be http://www.venturerider.org/forums The only difference is the plural forums instead of forum. The reason for this is because about 4 years ago when I started this site, I used forum instead of forums and should not have done that. All upgrades and changes that I make assume the default is "forums" and it causes me a LOT of extra work having to change all the files. That is just the small part. There is a major upgrade coming in the very near future. Not sure yet about the exact date but I will give another warning. It could be a few days from now or a couple of weeks. The new upgrade will add a number of new features. There are some new features included that I will likely disable because I just don't know that I like them. One such thing is "social networking". It basically allows members to create their own custom profile pages, much like MySpace and similar where you can post pictures, personal interests, even public messages and responses. I don't know that I like that idea. I am afraid that it will take away from the general forum. If everybody is posting and swapping messages on their personal pages, I think it will take away from the "one family" feel that we have now. There are other features also though and some good reasons for doing the upgrade. More on all of this later. I will give another warning before making the changes and then will list the new features gained from it.
  6. Any one know of a good and active mercury/ford car forum? I found a cuouple via search but they are dead.
  7. I received an email from Paul Meyers "Newman" asking if a "computer help" topic area would be useful. This was actually also suggested long ago. At the time, I kind of thought that there were enough computer site helps out there and never did anything. The truth is though, we do get quiet a few computer questions here. It's just natural that when you have a club that communicates via a website that computer questions will come up. Whether related to the way something works here or computers in general. We already had an area dedicated to "Tips for using the forum" so I've simply expanded that title to include computer help in general. Paul has offered to help with the questions posted there and I know that we have several other members here who are very good (some even do it for a living) that will jump in and help when needed. With such a great base of knowledge here and people who are willing to help, we may as well do what we can to help each other. So, that topic has been renamed "Computer help and tips for using our site" or something like that. Near the bottom of the main forum page. We get the questions anyway, usually in the Watering Hole, so why not start taking advantage of the area set aside for such things. I'm sure that we can all learn from it.
  8. ...ridden on TWO weeks!! It's killing me! We've had nothing but rain...and I mean RAIN as in torrential downpours for weeks! I love riding in the rain (yes I'm weird) but DAGGUM! I still have to play it safe®. Well...at least I can go to my favorite MC forum instead. Now I know how you guys that live where it si too cold and snowy to ride feel.
  9. I've added a new feature to the forum that some of you may find useful. When you click on the "search" link in the menu bar, you will now find an option to use "Google" to search the forum. I did this because there was a recent report where a member was looking for a specific thread about installing a Markland Hitch and it didn't come up in the search. Now I just experimented with this. If you use the normal search and enter "Markland Hitch Install", it returns about three threads. If you use the Google search it returns about 2 pages of threads. There is also an option there to search the entire Web or only the VentureRider forum. You WILL see some ads at the top and bottom of the search results pages. They should be related to your search though and just like the Google Ads on the side of the forum, I DO make a couple of penneys to help support the site if anybody sees one of interest and clicks on it. So.....I hope you find the new feature helpful.
  10. Had problems with my Zumo after I "Upgraded" to the new 3.8 Software Version. After about 2 weeks fighting it, contacting Garmin and consulting the Zumo Forum (http://www.zumoforums.com) I finally got it working normal again and I am a happy Camper. The solution was found thru the forum and not Garmin support. I wanted to share with you because I know many use the Zumo and it may keep you from stressing out for 2 weeks like I did on the problem. After Installing the 3.8 Software and adding new songs to my SD card for a total of 650 songs I started having problems. Problem 1: Occasionally I would get a screen saying Updating Bluetooth and would have to shut the Zumo Down and start it back up to get going. Bluetooth would connect to my phone but would disconnect within 30 seconds, I would have to go to the settings and select the phone connection again then it would go thru the cycle again. Problem 2: When turning the Zumo on, it would go thru the bootup screens, etc and when you select view map it would take 6 minutes for the map to display on the screen, the MP3 player would not list the songs on the zumo until after the map was displayed. Solution to Problem 1: Removed the new version 3.0 bluetooth software, downloaded the previous 2.4 version and installed it as per this forum link: http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php?topic=3598.0 Solution to Problem 2: Reorganized my music files into folders with no more than 25 songs in a folder. I originally had all the songs (650) in 1 folder. This is what was causing the delay in displaying the map. This forum link explains the problem and give pointers on how to fix it. http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php?topic=3268.0
  11. Could the Buddy List be displayed on the Home page in the left column, like it does when the Forum page is displayed. Very seldom use the Forum page.
  12. This message is for one member whom has asked me about the chirp. I will be happy to help, explain, but hey your email is blocked.....your contacts on this forum are blocked.....cannot talk to you with all the blocks. My email is kitcarsonplumbing@yahoo.com. Kit
  13. With all of the posts about final drive problems and noises, I thought this post might help. I saw it on a Gold Wing forum, but it certainly applies to the Venture/RSTD rear drive unit as well. They are nearly identical to the GW drive. http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Shaft.html
  14. One of the guys on my Mako boat forum has your boat!!! LOL Check out the pics. http://www.classicmako.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19135
  15. I just reformatted my hard drive and lost the Zumo Forum link.. Can somebody copy/paste it here for me? Thanks Much! Jeff
  16. Is there any interest here in a newsletter? This would be a newsletter that you would have the option of subscribing to. It would be emailed to the members who subscribe on a monthly, bi-monthly, whatever basis. The big advantage of this will be for those who do not visit and read every post on the forum on a daily basis. It would pull out the highlights or important threads from the forum and also any other relevant info that the author wants to write. It could include information and reminders of upcoming rallies, eat and meets, etc. The possibilities are endless. It would also be available online for anybody who prefers that it NOT be emailed to them. I already have the necessary module installed here for the newsletter feature, it is just something that I have never gotten around to doing. Now here is the next BIG question. Do we have a volunteer who is a good writer who would like to write the newsletter?
  17. Am getting the E2 error message when trying to inflate the rear end with the class system. Searched the forum but can't find anything on that message. Can anyone help? Thanks.
  18. This is a small compilation from the dragon. Not bad but I'm really just testing the video embedding feature that I am trying to add to our forum. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8Xf2Db313Y]YouTube - Tail of the Dragon, 1st edit[/ame]
  19. I tried SeaFoam in my ’99 RSV this week. After seeing the rave revues of the product here in the forum I said “Why not?” Within 15 miles I felt a noticeable increase in power. My records indicate that I had been averaging just over 37 mpg. On the first tank with SeaFoam I got 40 mpg and on the next tank without SeaFoam I got just over 40 mpg. I talked with my friend Scott Bartley of Knuckleheads Motorcycle Center, an independent sales, repair and self-service shop, here in Chambersburg, PA. He deals mainly in used motorcycles and aftermarket parts. He tells me that one of the first steps in preparing a used cycle for sale it adding SeaFoam to the fuel, especially one that has been setting for a while. What a great product, thanks to all the forum members for relating their stories about it. When I talked to Scott yesterday he recommended another product that the forum members should be aware of. Has anyone tried Bike Brite? Just spray it on and hose it off with a strong stream. I was amazed by how it made the chrome, paint and vinyl shine. The windscreen needed a quick wipe with a soft towel to remove the last of a weeks worth of bugs and I just towel dried the rest. I am as impressed with it as I am Sea Form. You can contact Scott for more info about Bike Brite at “bikeknuckleheads@aim.com”
  20. MOTORCYCLE SAFETY FORUM TO BE HELD ON MARCH 9 The Iowa Department of Transportation issued the following news release: Registration is now being accepted for the Fourth Annual Motorcycle Safety Forum. The Iowa Safety Management System (SMS), a diverse partnership of highway safety practitioners in engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency services, is facilitating the event March 9 at the Sheraton West Des Moines, 1800 - 50 th Street, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The forum brings together stakeholders including the Iowa Motorcycle Rider Education Program, the Iowa departments of Transportation and Public Safety, motorcycle enthusiasts, riders, dealers, and associations. Motorcycle fatalities have increased significantly, both in Iowa and nationally, since the late 1990s. Iowa has more than 200,000 licensed motorcycle operators and more than 125,000 registered motorcycles. Last year, preliminary data shows 56 people were killed and 700 were injured in crashes while driving or riding on motorcycles in Iowa. This one-day, interactive, hands-on forum will be highlighted by safety displays in the hotel parking lot, rider training, vendor booths, demonstrations on how to share the road with large trucks, and other motorcycle-related exhibits. Several speakers will share valuable information during the forum. Featured presenter Rick Neilson is a speaker, juggler and humorist who combines his talents to provide a motivational, inspirational and entertaining program. Other topics planned for the forum include a presentation on riding motorcycles from a woman's point of view, demonstration on the proper technique for removing the helmet of a crash victim and how to promote public awareness of motorcycle safety. There is no registration fee for the event, and lunch and breaks will be provided. To get your name on the attendee list, please call Iowa State University Conference Services by phone at 515-294-6222, fax to 515-294-6223 or e-mail via UCS-info@iastate.edu. Contact: Toni Kerkove, 319/235-8032, toni.kerkove@dot.iowa.gov.
