  1. I have some questions that I cannot find reference to in any articles so far. I just did my spring maintainence, oil, filter and final drive oil. I am really glad that I got the Carbon 1 lift adaptor, it made my life so much easier, doing all this by myself. With the bike still on the side stand, I drained the oil, and removed the old oil filter. This is the first question What exactly is that "rectifier" piece that blocks the oil filter at the front? What a pain in the ass that is, and could they not have given us like 1/2 inch more, so we could get a socket on the cap for the oil filter? The manual says to take it off to get access to the oil filter, but I just manage with a strap type oil filter wrench, although that is a pain as well. Well, I bought a new yamaha oil filter (last time I do that $14, they can kiss my ) Well I have a case of 10-40 oil from a friend, no friction modifiers. I also had about a litre of 20-50 left in a 4L jug of yamalube (first oil change) and a litre of 10-40 yamalube (second oil change) so I just tossed them both in (waste not want not) and topped off with the penzzoil 10-40. Second question, Does anyone think that mixing the viscosities, and oils will affect anything? I just didn't want to waste that oil. I guess I am a cheap ass when you get right down to it. I changed the oil filter, and put the plug with new crush gasket ($2 for that. Does anyone know of a better place to buy them?) Then I took off my left saddle bag, easy job thanks to Dragerman and the hand tightening bolts he gave me. Then I drained the final drive oil. I changed it last year too, I don't think that it can be changed too often can it? The drain bolt had what appeared to be some kind of grease all over it, I wiped it clean and re-installed it. 3rd question, was I supposed to add some kind of grease to the plug? I then affixed my lift adaptor to the bike, and jacked it up. Carbon 1 lift adaptor worked flawlessly. I affixed the legs to the adaptor, and removed my jack. Now I set to refilling all the fluids I drained. With the bike level and upright, was a breeze. First I filled the rear end drive oil. I filled it to the bottom of the fill hole using an oil syringe I got at walmart. It just did not seem to be as much as I put in last time. So I spun the rear wheel by hand in neutral. The oil got sucked up in the drive, I left it for a bit with the wheel stopped, and very slowly the oil level was visible again at the bottom of the fill bolt hole. I spun it again, and when the level dropped, I added more oil maybe 50 ml more, and put the plug back in quickly and tightened. Question 4, will overfilling the final drive a bit, cause me any problems? I filled the engine oil as well, no problems there, and checking the level was a breeze. Usually that is the biggest pain for me, doing it by myself. So, any answers to my silly questions?
  2. Life lesson number 3759, ALWAYS make sure the petcock is turned OFF before changing your fuel filter! Felt a little like the little Dutch boy for a couple of seconds...
  3. OK, after 60,000 miles, I thought it would be a good idea to change out the fuel filter. WHAT A HUGE PITA!!! I now see why so many have changed out to the inline auto style filter. Next time for sure. Time to ride. RR
  4. I'd like to fit an oil filter adaptor to my '87 1300 engine so I can use spin-on/spin-off filters. Makes life so easy. Does anyone have a used one at a reasonable price ? Jim O'D Darwin Australia
  5. OK, I've spent an hour looking for the dang oil filter on JoDees bike. Can anybody help me on this one? It's a 650 Vstar Classic 2006. If you have a drawing via manual it would be MUCH appreciated. God Bless. Mike
  6. as we first geners are limited in options for our filters. Is there an adaptor to use screww on filters. HOw much, who sell and pros and cons if this adapter exist. I'm haveing and impossible time finding the ch6002 filter in my area. No one is selling them here except for the stealors. Any help will be greatly appreciated. David
  7. Here's a decent article on K&N Filters. I use them in my bike. Can't really say that I ever noticed any increase in power though. I would still buy them again though because it does save on replacement filter costs. http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/k-n-air-filter/
  8. I have a cycle comm 1200 CB radio and after years of service with no trouble I now have a whine in the CB and the AM / FM . has this happned to any one. Air Filter

I am having trouble finding a paper element air filter for my 87 Venture. Anyone have any good ideas on where I might find a new one and any part numbers that might be helpful.?. Thanks guys.
  10. OK, so when I bought my brake pads, I figured I'd see what a new oil filter would cost. Then not thinking the price was too outrageous, I bought one. My local thievery shop sold me a #1J7-13441-10 filter. Then later, while looking through the parts catalog for my '84 VR, I noticed that the recomended filter number is #1J7-13440-91-00. So I took the filter back today to get the correct filter and was told that the old number had been replaced with this "New" number. Personally, I think the parts man behind the counter was smoking crack. In the service manual, there's supposed to be a rubber ring gasket, this "new" numbered filter has none, nor does it have a place for one. What say ye?
  11. Hello, is anyone using a Wal-Mart Super Tech brand oil filter? Also how about Valvoline 20W50 motorcycle oil? This is the only local option I have for these kinds of products and I sure don't want to cause problems for my 2006 RSTD. Thanks for your help!
  12. One of my riding buddies is in the process of changing the air filter on his Goldwing. What a mess. He's got parts all over his garage and still hasn't gotten down to the filter. Seems you have to pull all of the plastic off between the seat and the handlebars including the dash and side covers. He's not happy. It turns out the dealers get 2 to 2.5 hours of labor for changing a filter. He's so mad he went out looking at Harleys today. DT
  13. I need help, I stopped at 2 places and they couldn`t cross reference this oil Filter for my Cub Cadet.. # KH2505025 It is about the size of a car filter and is on a Kohler motor. Any help would be great!! Thanks
  14. I did some checking on here and found a cross over to another oil filter that I picked up at pep boys, since its a car filter and not a bike so to speek does it matter? I seen on a web site they have a adapter to run the regular filters so they seal does anyone use these or does it matter? I am running what I bought at pep boys and so far its working but I dont want to have a issue and not know it til its to late. Thanks
  15. I recently purchased a K&N filter for a sport bike I own. I have a Suzuki Katana 750. After buying it I had numerous guys in the sportbike field tell me that I should NEVER put a K&N on a bike that has carbs. Yet I have them on my Venture and have never had any issues. How much truth is there in this?
  16. I really dont want to remove the tank to do it, but I am sure that the lower part of the tank is full of junk from the last 25 years of it's life. I only had the bike for a year now but I have never opened the reserve valve and dont want to if there is junk in there. And good tips on how to clean all that out and drain it to a bucket? also where is the fuel filter? I cant find it.
  17. I looked all over the place but did not see this answer...so if it is a repeat...I appoligize. I have been torn over whether to install the chrome Air Filter covers on the RSV...I see on this site where some has had problems with chrome pealing off and the cost is a big issue. Yamaha says will warranty all accessory parts for 1 year, gee I figure something that small that cost close to $300 for the set just for looks ought to have more warranty than that. I really like the look...but so far I have not got up the courage to make that purchase. But they look so good... I know it is coming in the future and I found the K&N Air Filters at a steal of $74 for the pair so I jumped on them. Best I could find else where was around $101. I understand you need the K&N filtes for the new chrome covers. Not sure why at this point. Now I have a set of K&N Air filters and no chrome air filter covers. I was wondering...can you use the K&N filters with the stock air filter covers? I know I put a K&N stock replacement air filter in my VW Jetta TDI diesel and gained about 2 MPG, that pushed me up over 50 MPG mark, so it has gotta help if I can use the on the RSV. Thanks, Mike
  18. I have a 1999 rsv and I have all the numbers for different oil filters that were posted, but I was wondering if there are any numbers for the air filter. Thanks hairman
  19. Does anyone know of a website that shows substitute oil filters for a 2007 V star 1300. The yamaha part is 5DM-13440-00-00. I checked the Oil Filter cross reference on this site but didnt see any. ??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks JR
  20. I guys, got a lot of work done on the 06 Midnight Venture last night with my ride buddy turning the wrenches.. We've changed the oil, spark plugs, rad levels and rear diff oil.. and installed an Air Horn in the front cowling (ouch loud), and a garage door opener. We tried to change the fuel filter but halted when we realized we weren't contortionists and weren't ready to dismantle half of the bike to get at the filter. Are we missing something obvious here, is there a painfully obvious route to access to the fuel filter or do you have to disassemble everything around fuel pump? Tomorrow, wheels come off to get the tires changed.. Cheers
  21. I'm trying to find out if there is any other air filter and housing that can be used on a 2nd Gen Venture. I called Yamaha and asked if they could give me the cfm draw of a stock filter and housing. They told me that was info that they could not give out. So I've been posting on another site and thougt I would post here to see if anyone else might have some knowledge on the subject. I got some info on another forum of someone using these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-Kawasaki-Suzuki-Yamaha-NEW-Chrome-Air-Filter-45mm_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35595QQihZ012QQitemZ220310739471QQtcZphoto They have had good results and have not had to rejet. Also someone found this company that sounds like they could make an adaptor plate to fit the application. http://www.vesquared.com/ramflo/index.htm The problem here is we don't know the cfm of the stock Venture. Just trying to come up with something else that would not require rejeting and would not cause problems (running lean or rich). I'm not mechanicly smart and just looking for something to bolt on. Also a way to dress up the Venture without spending lots of cash!!!!!
  22. So the manual says you can use a torque wrench to torque it to spec. Well I tried it and there isn't enough room between the oil filter and the plate you bolt the rectifier too (even though the picture in the manual shows differently). If the plate was moved maybe 2-3" to the left, it would line up. How do you tighten your oil filter? Do you worry about torquing it to spec? I just used one of those rubber strap things and once the oil filter wouldn't move anymore I stopped trying to tighten it. I didn't want to dent it in any way.
  23. I know this has been discussed ad nausium, but here we go again. Which screw on filter fits the 1stGen screw on oil adapter. There's a FRAM on the '91 now, but the writing and stock number are gone. Why? Donno...?? The only thing I can think of is it's been on there for a very very long time. I haven't changed the oil in it since I picked it up... but then again I haven't taken it anywhere either.. I thought I'd try putting MC specific motor oil in it to see if that will cure the leak. From what I can see it looks like it's coming from around the back of the pan gasket. I also found traces of silicon around the drain plug as if the PO thought that might have been the source of the leak?? And ...he may have put a synthetic in the motor?? It worth a shot to see if it'll work. Anyway, again, what's the filter number. Anyone?? If that doesn't work I'll be taking it over to a tech. Getting too old to be crawling around on my back. A chair is a good thing...
  24. Who is using an after-market OIL filter adapter on a first-gen(86-93) I had one of the "ears" on the housing(stops housing from turning when installing and removing) fall into the drain pan when I changed oil on Sat. and was fine driving around until Tues, morning when I arrived at work and bike started to drip a little. When I came out after work and started it up it dripped a whole lot (unsafe) so I got a ride home and went back to trailer it home.Put on my repair-table and found it was leaking where the "ear" broke off. Am now looking at after-market adapters to replace it. Found one made out of billet alluminum but not sure about them---don't want to go to salvage yard as they would be as old as mine so could be as much trouble in long run. Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!
  25. I just posted some parts and accessories from my 90 VR in the classifieds. There's some good stuff there and it's all in very good shape. In case anyone wants to know, yes, I still have the bike. The buyer backed out and Ebay didn't go far enough. It's still for sale but it's back to stock except for the Progressive springs, stainless steel brakelines and spinon filter. Still a nice ride just minus a few things. Couldn't sell it as a package so I'll sell what I can now and sell the bike in the spring.
