  1. The answer was provided by Bill Adbou and posted as a performance tweak, I have included his tweak for your review: Air Filter Buckling The air filters have a hard plastic base and top with the filter element in the middle. Where the filter attaches to the black base housing, it is forced down and allowed to buckle, causing the element to seperate from the base. I am sure yours is the same way. I got new ones from my dealer, no questions asked, andinstalled them with a 2 inch piece of 5/8" heater hose at the top which keeps downward pressure on the filter once the top housing is in place. It takes a little force to assemble it, but once it's together it will stay. Note: use of a horse shoe piece of foam cut to 5/8" thickness, with the open pointing forward, so as to not interfere with the air flow from the air box opening. Thanks for everyones input, as my newly acquired 1988 Venture had this modification.
  2. I ran across a comment of placing a horse shoe shape pieces of foam on the top of the air filter on a 1st Gen bike. What is the purpose to this piece of foam and in what orientation towards the driver or away. cimack77
  3. Before I proceed to the stealers does anybody have a suggestion on an after market noise filter for an 90VR radio/cb part#INL88188-00 MOD# FR-88-34S0372 THANKS Stewart :canada:
  4. A friend of mine (who hasn't joined us....yet) is looking for chrome air filter canisters and can't find them. Any ideas? He owns a white 2005 RSTD and he just ordered the Khrome Werks pipes because he likes how my bike sounds. I already checked Cruiser Customising without luck. Any help is appreciated. silverdeer
  5. Just bought and installed a Fram oil filter on the RSV. Half the price of the Yamaha filter. Pros and Cons please - Thanks!
  6. I was heading back to Salt Lake City from a four day trip through Colorado and the bike shutdown. I was heading north on I-15, our major north/south route, with afternoon rush hour traffick. In the fastlane at about 80-85 and the bike stopped responding to throttle. Had to stop on the left side of this four laner with not much room to do even that. Cars whipping by merely inches away. I now have a new found respect for our Highway Patrol. One car did a slow down manuver to four lanes so I could push my bike to the right side. Our Highway Incident Command wanted my bike off the highway so I pushed that sucker 3/4 of a mile to the next ramp. Have I mentioned the muscle pump I got from that. Long story short.....friends called.....bike trailered.....all because of a clogged fuel filter. This filter had less than a year on it and only 7,000 miles. How long should they last? Our local yamaha guy told me to pay better attention to buying good quality gas. My neck of the woods that would be Chevron. Priciest too...go figure. Anyway.....it put me in a dangerous situation with some huffing and puffing to boot.....lesson learned on doing a complete check of the bike before a long trip out of town.
  7. I was just on the Purolator web site and found this interesting little piece of info. in their motorcycle oil filter section What About PureONE If you're thinking you want to install a PureONE oil filter on your bike, please think again. PureONE oil filters are designed for vehicles, not bikes. Because of PureONE's high efficiency, the motorcycle oil pump may not be able to handle the pressure. The Purolator motorcycle filter line is designed to meet the specific needs of a bike; therefore we highly recommend the use of a Purolator ML filter over a PureONE oil filter. What thinks ye all? Their recommended filter, per their application chart is the ML16817. They have another number down but it looks like a discontinued model ML19819 Purolator Motorcycle application guide
  8. Ok, I've changed the oil in the bike (not the filter) as I will be doing this once again next week when I install the new clutch kit coming in.. The book states that without changing the filter, the bike will take 3.5 litres of oil.. 3.7 litres if you change the filter.. (page 7-15 owners manual) And just like the last time, I've drained the oil out, removed the filler plug, bike is upright, hot engine, I even go as far as leaning it side to side to get the last of the old oil out and I just put in 3 litres of oil.. and the level is right at the top of the sight glass.. I actually had to drain a tad out to bring it to within specs.. Seems to me I'm not getting a full draining of the old oil out of the bike.. by half a litre.. might not seem like a lot but it's got me wondering where and why it's not emptying out properly... Or is this more of the norm then? Just curious, bike's been performing superb since the new fuel pump, new coils and new switches in PA the other week Cheers
  9. Hi, I'm sure this has been discussed many times, however I did not find any old posts to my satisfaction. So, My question is. What oil would you recomend and what filter would you recomend? My bike only has 3k miles on it so I figured I could switch to whatever I wanted to run and stick with it. I read that some oils have helped with the chirpping noise, which I have a chirp but it's not a bad one. Thanks, Brett
  10. Hey Guys and gals, I'm back with some 1st Gen. questions. I am wanting to change the oil and filter on my brothers (BearForce1) 88 Venture Royale. What if any differences is there between a first gen and a second gen.? Same tools, filter, fairing removal? If there is a link, that would be great (I couldn't find one). I have done a 2nd gen a few times in the past. Next question, he gets a horrible "wobble" when he takes his hands off the handlebars. Is there a link for tightening the head bolt or replacing the bearings? Any info on these two items would be great!
  11. My mother recently gave my daughter about 10 goldfish from her pond. I have a decent sized (Approximately 20 gallons) hexagon acrylic aquariumsitting in the attic that My mom had given me years ago, but never used. All of the equipment is pretty old, so I am researching a new filter system for the aquarium. My mother had used an Undergravel filter (UGF), but I have encountered several sites on the net that do not use UGF's and provide reasonable reasons for doing so. So, I got this aquarium that I would like to use for basic, low maintenance fresh water fish. I have some gravel and some old ornaments. I just need the cleaning "system" to get this thing going. The ten fish are currently sitting in my garage in a 2 gallon bucket. My mother assures me they will be fine for a week or so, but i'd rather not have my 6 and 4 yr old find their "pets" floating on the wrong side of the water. I may buy a 10 gallon starter aquarium from the box store for now, but I would like to use the big hex aquarium eventually. Any hobbist out there that can provide some info?
  12. Stopped at the local Honda shop today to get a filter (yama shop 70 miles away). They crossed to a Honda #15410-MFJ-D01 by way of a K&N 303. Does anyone know of a reason I shouldn't/couldn't use this filter. It appears to be a new number starting back in 2007. Looks to be the correct size, same as what's on my bike now. I've not been able to cross this on any of the referenced charts I've looked at. Dealer said the new goldwings are running this. If it's OK I'm thinking most of the cross ref. charts out there need an update. Helpful replies much appreciated .
  13. I just a large round of pre-road trip maintenance on the bike tonight, oil and filter, new set of plugs, and recharge the air filters.. I had done the plugs and air filter 12,000 miles ago and they looked spanking brand new, fresh red on the K&N and spark plugs had a nice colour to them (though I will post pics of them later on for your visual interpretation of them..) I goofed when I put the oil in though, seems I added way too much.. almost 4 full litres instead of the usual 3.5 litres when doing the filter as well. Silly question, ought I be better off to drain the excess or will it simply vent out and be no cause for concern except for possible mess on the bike? With the bike upright, warm engine, the oil sits to the top of the glass, when on it's side stand, it's in the middle. Personally, I'd drain but was always curious about this.. Thanks in advance.
  14. Does anyone have a front AIS intake filter for a 2000 Yamaha RSV that you don't want anymore? lobo17

  16. Has anyone tried a stainless steel reusable oil filter Any pros or cons
  17. Any of you ride a GL1500? I need to know, if someone can tell me, if Wal-Mart sells an oil filter that is compatible with the GL1500's. My dad has a 1996 GL1500, and hates to pay for the filters from the dealer, and I'm sure there are suitable replacements. Trying to search through Goldwing forums for "replacement oil filter" is like searching any oil related topic at any forum. Thanks in advance for any help.
  18. Ok whats up with all these 2nd gen. oil filter numbers? I picked up a couple oil filters at the dealer for my 2008 RSTD for stock, they gave me PN/ 5DM-13440-00. My orignal filter PN/ 5GH-13440-00 is almost twice as long. I did a search on oil filters and found a PN/ 3FV-13440-00:think: So I my question is will there be any oil flow/pressure problems?
  19. here we go with another problem... man you folks are patient. Anyhow I've got a lot of static in my headsets. Enough that we don't want to use them. It is engine noise because it changes with the rpm of the engine. I have an 84 which did not come with a C/B and have fitted one from a 90. What I'm hearing is the Mark II's have a noise filter. I have one that I picked up but cannot find anywhere that it plugs in. So the question is.. Where does it plug in. Maybe my bike is missing that plug in the harness. Is there a diagram that I could follow to wire this up somehow. I'm running out of ideas. I pulled all the wires out of the bike and ran them across the top to eliminate the proximity to high tension wires. No help. I pulled the stator wires out and got them away from the frame. Didn't help. I'm really hoping a filter will help. OK guys and gals... I'm hoping someone out there can help me get this figured out. Wayne
  20. I just bought a 86 VR and it has a spin on oil filter ( Fram PH3950). I changed the oil and got a equivalent Wix filter. ( I think Fram is junk) My problem is that the filter seamed to bottom out before the seal completely seated, this was confirmed when after a bit there is a drop oil oil then after a day a small puddle of oil on the floor, coming from the bottom of the filter. I have no idea who makes this conversion to the spin on or if I have to use only the Fram junk. Anyone have any advice? or know what filters will work best on this spin on conversion? Thanks EddyG
  21. Hi, Thought I'd ask if anyone has a better solution than the one I am about to try. The previous owner of my bike stripped the crap out of the oil filter bolt and I am unable to get it off. My plan is to cut a slot in the bolt head with my dremel and then use an impact driver to see if I can get it undone. Any other ideas? Anyone know if the bolts bust off in the block since these are hollow? I already have a replacement bolt, oil and filter. So it shouldn't be bad once I get it off. Thanks, Ian
  22. i changed my oil today. weird thing it toook a long time for the oil to show in the window. i put 4 quarts plus a filter. finally after a long tiome it showed. about halfway in the window is this the correct place?
  23. Hi Everyone. I am the proud owner of a 2008 RSTD I picked it up last Wednesday and am comming very close to my 1st service. My manual says change oil and filter as well as changing gear oil in rear end. I went to the dealer to get oil and filter and was informed that there are 2 drain plugs on the engine. Is this true? it seems odd to have 2 drain plugs. If there are 2 where are they, and are they both easy to get to? Thanks for any advice Racso
  24. Morning all.. I have an 83 Std, that was new to me last year. I love the old girl and used it as often as I could on my daily 40 mile commute to work until the snow flew. When spring finally reached this part of the world a few weeks ago, I put the charged battery back in, changed the plugs (all looked good at the time), oil, etc. I had stored it with some Seafoam in the fuel, and have run 2 tanks through it in the last month. My issue is that it just doesn't seem to have the top end power it did. It doesn't accelerate nearly as fast as it used to. The exhaust note seeems to be ever so slightly lower (not a bog though). Hills are now noticeable. It's not the clutch slipping as the rpms don't climb as rapidly as they used to. Thinking it was carbs, I dosed her again with another can of Seafoam and went for a hard run on some quiet backroads. It accelerates, not with the "Jeez, I'd better hold on tighter" feeling it used to. It attained and easily held 150 km/hr (90-95 mph), and I backed down before it did. Should it get to that speed running on 3 cyclinders ? All four header pipes are hot. No popping or burbling at all on a decelleration. I changed the plug caps (trimmed the plug wire ends too), with no improvement. All 4 slides move evenly and smoothly when you hit the throttle and nothing is impeding their travel throughout the whole range of movement (checked each slide with my finger while not running). All 4 plugs are a nice tan colour. Air filter is freshly cleaned (re-usable foam) & re-oiled (K&N oil). Fuel filter was replaced when I got it, and looks clean now. Could it be timing - the boost sensor ? I am pretty sure I didn't gain 200+ lbs over the winter. Any thoughts would be muchly appreciated.
  25. Hello Friends: Looking to locate the Yamaha part number for an oil filter for a 2008 RSTD to cross reference with a Pure One oil filter. Friend of mine swears by this oil filter for his ST. In order to cross reference I need the Yamaha filter part number, anyone have one? Thanks, Steve
