  1. I ride with the Patriot Guard and bought a flag pole attachment for my Rivco tow hitch. I didn't like the flag pole that was made for it (seemed a little flimsy) so I went out and bought a much sturdier steel one piece pole. The pole is too small for the receptacle. So, I found a piece of PVC that fits the pole perfectly, but it's 2/10ths of an inch too thick to fit in the receptacle. I tried using a piece of sand paper to 'slim' it down, but I can see that's gonna take a LOOOOONG time. So, I'm hoping some of you will have some ideas on how to reduce the girth of this adapter.
  2. When I got home there was a letter from Yamaha Canada saying that they had a gift for me. Because I bought a Venture they had sent my dealer an iPod shuffle, 12V charger and audio cable for me to connect it in to the on-board stereo. Nice of them. One problem - I bought an RSTD, not a Venture. I dropped by the dealer with the letter to explain the error so they could return the iPod. Dealer said "Nope. Head office said to give it to you, here you go." So I'm sitting at home that night with a beer in one hand and the TV remote in the other, and my eye falls on the iPod sitting next to my helmet. The germ of an idea begins to form. 20 minutes and some duct tape later and this the result: (best part is - no cassette player lol)
  3. I came into work Monday and one of our Harley guys told me about a Venture a guy had where he had just bought a small trail bike for his kid. The guy had posted on Craigs List and it looked pretty good. It turned out to be an 86 with 39.000 miles on it with some extra stuff. The guy that had it was a contractor and had done some work for a guy that couldn't come up with all money owed, so he threw in the bike. The guy that we bought it from said he had only put about 100 miles on it and he did more damage to the bike than the previous 24 years. He dropped it and broke a corner out of the right fairing and under the trunk. The bike has been sitting for a long time and will definately need a carb cleanning and sync. It has a new battery and does run, but only with the choke on, which is typical of clogged jets. Otherwise, the bike appears to be in really nice shape and should be roadworthy without too much work and money. We are going to need one of the rubber straps that hold the side panels on. The carbs still have the torque screws and appear to have not been touched, so it will probably need diaphragms. It has a nice Ventureline Back rest and it even has the lighted rear reflector that Big bike parts sold. It is the brown color and a little lighter that the brown 85 I bought a while back. As soon as we get the side panels back on it, I will try to post a couple of pictures of it. I think that will be a nice bike for Brian(Lil Venturous) as his wife wants to ride and the only thing she has ridden on with him was a souped up FZ1 and I don't think that went too well. RandyA
  4. So I have just joined this forum, wanted to say hi, and introduce myself. I am on my third royal star venture. I started with a 1996 roal star tour classic thati bought in 2004 with 7000 miles on it, when i finished with it, it had 87,000 on it by the middle of 2007. I bought a new 06 royal star midnight venture, which was running strong until someone ran it over while parked last week. Good thing my insurance covered what was left on the loan plus enough ectra to get another motorcycle. A new 2010 royal star venture s. Yes, I like the motorcycle, I dont own a car, i ride all the time, and in southern california traffic, it absolutely saves me time and gas over driving a car. Anyway, just wanted to say hi.

  7. I'm a new member. I am going to buy the clutch up grade from Skydoc_17 for my 99 Venture. I will need someone to help me change it. I live in Hamshire, TX about 6miles from Winnie. I'm retired military and retired from my job. I sure could use the help. I bought the Venture in 03 when my tour was over in Afghanistan. All I've done is put K&N filters, tires changed the oil, and tune up by a mechanic. Dana csmbrak@aol.com
  8. So I have been a Yamaha guy most of my life,160 Honda Dream,'66 Honda 450 and then a '70 XS650 but in '80 I bought a XS1100 Yamaha Special that I have ridden ever since. Been with the bike almost 31 years,it does the job, very reliable..low mileage 82000,so have many of you bought the Venture when they first came out and still have them? I have read horror stories of what po's have done to the XS's...if you are the orginal owner I would be interested in your thoughts as I might look into getting one.Just a maybe as a back up bike.
  9. So, has anyone bought one yet?
  10. I bought an 86 Cavalcade with 23000 miles to fix up and sell. Looks to be in excellent shape. Has a gas leak or stuck float. Praying it is an easy fix.
  11. I have a 2005 Royal Star Venture. There were 2 times yesterday when I turned the bike on, my radio, my clock, and my trip odometers were all reset. Is this indicative of a battery going bad, or may I have some other kind of electrical problem? I bought the bike used about 14 months ago, and not sure how old the battery is. Thanks.
  12. Just got my forks back together for my '84. Had a lil mishap year that damaged the seals so a rebuild was in order. Ended up buying a spare set of forks to rebuild as I was concerned about damage to one of the inner fork tubes. So that started the whole project. As I had time over the winter to play with this I got into doing a good job of it. Stripped the clear coat off the lower tubes and bought some goodies to try my hand at polishing. Worked out pretty good for a much better finish but a long way from a professional job. Good enough. A lot better than where it started from. And I had wanted to find a way to remove the anti-dives. I had disconnected them long ago but the buggers were still there. Wanted them gone. I had played around with making my own plates to close the ports but it was a PITA to get right. Then our one and only skydoc_17 offered up his SS Blockoff Plates. Thank you Earl. Now there are two less items to take a toothbrush to. I finally got around to ordering the rest of the parts I needed from skydoc and got after it this week. Done deal, finished, over. Laying on the bench ready to mount back up as soon as it warms up a bit more.....maybe tomorrow. The blockoff plates make for a much slicker look and cleans up the forks nicely. I might mention that when I opened up my old forks (with the Progressive Springs) I found I had gained a bit of slack in the preload. I made new set of spacers to tighten that back up. Don't even want to talk about all the things I found wrong on the inside of forks I bought off eBay. Yikes! What some people will do to a bike to try to make it work. Death wish I tell ya!! But I got what I needed from them.....both inner tubes were good so that alone was worth it. So a few pics of the old and new. Mike
  13. my roadking pipes set 3 inches off the ground at rear of bike. my friend who just bought a 2005 like mine sets 6 inches off groung at same point. under the bikes look the same. how do you know if you have a lowering kit installed? bottom of my pipes are flatten , know why now. the guy i bought it from put every oem chrome part made on it and said he wanted it to look like a HD. so he bought one findly and i got the venture ,decked out and looking good. did he put a lowering kit on also. ? help someone and tell me what to look for. thanks
  14. I messed up and bought a Bushtec Roadmaster Trailer. Don't get me wrong, the trailer is outstanding and worth every penny, but I wonder if I should've bought a side car instead. I have bad hips and realize that holding up our bike with our combined 400lbs is getting to be an issue. Since a Trike conversion is sooo expensive, I was thinking that if I had bought a sidecar rather than a trailer, I would've been better off for close to the same money. I could've hauled our extra luggage on long trips in the sidecar AND been able to take a 3rd passenger on short cruises! So, do you agree? Did I mess up?
  15. Well, Honda's announced the '12 Wing. Looks like same powertrain with some mod's to the bodywork, specifically the side cases. I like the older model better, but that's just my 2cents.... Glad I bought my '10. The 12 doesn't appear to be any quantum leap forward.....
  16. So...after I got my $180 dollars back from the bank on my chargeback, I decided to start a journey. Here is a breakdown of how I spent my money that I got back after Troy stole it from me. I started by buying a half hide of upholstery leather on Ebay for $56 dollars. After receiving the leather, I then trekked out to the garage and made some quick templates. Took me about 1.5 hours to make the templates. At first I was going to take the cut out of the hide to an upholstery shop to sew them up, but it was a rainy day. I decided, to learn how to sew. I went down to Target and bought a sewing machine for $79.99 + tax, then headed to Hobby Lobby to buy some upholstery thread and leather needles. (They didn't have the leather needles, so I opted for the heavy duty all purpose needles.) Total Cost about $12. Then I went to Advanced Auto and bought 18 ft roll of trim for $12. I, then read the manual on how to set up the sewing machine and thread it. (It has been since 1993 in Home Economics class since I have sewn.) So, away I went... I knew I still had enough left over leather to screw up 3 times... So, I started with the Tank Bib, since that was just pretty much a straight sew. It came out really nice, I was quite impressed with my natural ability. Took me 5 minutes to sew. Then I started with the Saddle Bag Bras. These were a little more difficult, but I was still able to sew them up and trim them out in about 45 minutes. I learned a few things that might have helped. The leather that I bought was a little thick. It made it hard for the trim that I bought to go over the seams. It also was not very plyable. It worked great for the tank bib though. I also learned that I might need to redo the patterns, because as you can see from the pics, they are not a PERFECT fit. In the end, it does work for me. I may take another crack at it, and maybe some more leather projects, as I have quite a bit left over. All in All... This is my point.. If Troy would have had the templates already made. It would have taken him less than 1.5 hours to cut, sew and fabricate my order. Remember, I am a rookie and it took me that much time after I made my templates. In my opinion, he is a scam artist and he just takes payments ahead as a steal. When the pressure is put on, then he comes through. My materials cost me less than $80 (plus a sewing machine). If he really had my materials like he said, he should have sat down and sewn the order. So for 160 dollars, I am quite satisfied with the outcome.
  17. Hey all of ya'll Ohio residents. I have a question. One of the insurance companies I do business with in Georgia is being bought by Buckeye Insurance Group in Piqua, Ohio. Anyone dealt with Buckeye or know anything about them?
  18. When Tom bought his Blackberry, he thought about the 30-year business he ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. He signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so his seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with him in the modern way. He figured he could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space. That was before one of his grandkids hooked him up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to his cell phone and every other program within the texting world. His phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. He was not ready to live like this. He now keeps his cell phone in the garage in his golf bag. The kids bought him a GPS for his last birthday because they say he gets lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. He keeps that in a box under his tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone he is supposed to use when he drives. He wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to his wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards glaring at him. He had to take his hearing aid out to use it, and then got a little loud. The GPS looked pretty smart on his dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person he'd had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate him. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell him to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if he made a right turn instead......Well, it was not a good relationship. When he gets really lost now, he calls his wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves him. To be perfectly frank, he is still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in their house. They have had them for 4 years, but he still hasn't figured out how he can lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings. The world is just getting too complex for him. They even mess him up every time he goes to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time he checks out just knocks him for a loop. He bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but can never remember to take them in with him. Now he tosses it back to them. When they ask him, "Paper or Plastic?" he just says, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at him with a blank look. He was recently asked if he tweets. He answered, No, but I do toot a lot." P.S. I know a few of you are not over 50. I sent it to you to allow you to forward it to those who are.
  19. hi all just found a 1999 rsv thats been triked out with a motor trike kit. it has less than 18,000 miles on it. they want $15,000 for it. i know the engine not even broken in at those miles. shucks when i bought my '99 rsv it only had 21,000 miles on the clock. should i go for the $15,000 or offer them a lower price? reguards don c.
  20. Just a FYI. Salvage Direct has a 2004 XVZ Royal Star Venturre listed for auction. Item # 801896. Bike has 35M plus miles, runs, drives and is listed as a stolen recovery. Bike is located in Eldridge, Ia. Current bid is $750 and the auction ends 12-22. I have never bought any thing thru this auction but this could be an easy fix up if it could be bought at the right price.
  21. After putting fuel stabilizer in and running the bike for a couple minutes does anyone turn the fuel petcock off to drain the carbs? Also I attached my batter tender the other day to the battery when I noticed corrosion on the (I believe) positive post. This is a new battery that I bought this summer so I shouldn't be having this problem. But from what I remember need to use baking soda or wife brush to clean it off. Can't remember what to use to keep it from coming back. Thanks.
  22. When I bought this VR a few weeks ago, I noticed that it was missing the bag lliners and toolkit. The owner had bought it this way so he didn't have them. I can go to the nearest luggage store and get bags that should fit reasonably well, so that shouldn't be a big problem (Yes, I know...famous last words!). I am about to assemble a tool kit myself (Come to think of it, I had to do that for my Triumph too.) and I was wondering if there is anything special I should keep in mind? I'm thinking in terms of known problems that can be easily fixed on the roadside if you have the right tools...I mean other than a full tear down and rebuild! For instance, the pick up coil on the older Triumph's were supplied by different companies and one of them had somewhat poor quality, so the coil likes to die fairly early in its life. Replacing it on the side of the road is doable in about 20 min. or so if you have the proper Allen wrench. So ... anything like that to keep in mind for the VR? Thanks in adavance.
  23. Seems like I remember a while back someone posting some .GPX files. Were those map updates that would work in a Nuvi? I just bought a used Nuvi 255 off Fleabay. I'm not sure how up to date the map file is.
  24. Well, I just bought a 1987 Venture Royale with only 59,000 km (about 36,875 miles) on it. Seems the guy I bought it from put 40,000 of those km's on it over the past 6 years so he took care of all the "rotting while it sat unused problems" (I hope). He had the valves adjusted and the carbs cleaned and balanced 10,000 km ago and just put new tires (Metzelers) and brakes on it. Now to my problem...a rock knocked a small hole in the headlight cover 4 years ago and the owner put clear silicone seal on it right away. It seems to have kept out water, etc. but I would still like to replace it. There are a number of them for sale on ebay. Most are '83's to '84's but there are also two '86's. I know there were a number of changes made in '86 and I was wondering which other year of cover might fit besides the '87. Any help would be appreciated.
  25. Well, New Enough is hacking at me again. They have been offering up some things that I have been wanting to improve on for a while. Today I got the notice on the HJC Sy-Max II going on sale. I've needed to replace my full face helmet, a Vetter I bought when I bought my GL1100, (and no I don't wear it anymore), to something more modern. LOL! I have the HJC Trooper style half helmet that is my daily bucket. Fits great, stays cool and most comfortable helmet I've ever owned. But the colder weather is setting in a full face would be nice. But from what I'm reading the HJC Sy-Max II has some pretty good reviews and has been around for a bit. Now today, they listed one in my size, which is a bear to find and for a decent price. Anyone here own one of these and what are your thoughts on it? The sun visor is one of my main concerns. Nice feature, but seems to be the weak spot in the reviews. Thanks for any comments. Mike
