  1. Two questions: One! after riding through a downpour at night my headlight quit. I replaced the fuse and saw a "flash" when I turned the ignition on. Headlight still worked on low beam but high beam is dim and brings on the headlight warning light and the CM blinks, the fuse is fine. Could this just be the bulb being bad (it looks OK)? Two! Trying to find a possible bad contact for the above I pulled the headlight, apparently the PO had a "accesory" hooked into a tan #10 wire under the panel. the accesory wire wasn't capped or taped of when he cut it, and it hit the headlight frame. Nothing works!!, All fuses in the fuse panel are OK, I know there should be some other fuse somewhere, but I can't find it. Do I need to pull the entire fairing? Do I need to look for something else? Oh, that was bright! Found that one on top of the battery! For some reason I thought it was down under the fairing! so that answers that, next question though is: Where do I get a new one??
  2. In the last couple of weeks I have been getting an intermittant warning light on the computer display telling me that there is a problem with my headlight (?high beam?). When I switch to low beam the indicator goes out, once I turn the high beam on it comes back (sometimes with a delay, sometimes with the flick of the switch). The headlight is actually on for both high and low beam. It seems that the longer I ride the warning will become less intermittantant and eventually remains off. Any ideas??? I'm thinking lose ground somewhere or the "?reserve headlight unit?". As mentioned the headlight remains on the entire time so my thought process would be somewhere in the sensor circuitry. Advise please......I hate little red warning lights
  3. I looking for some advise , My high beam is not working on my 06 rstd , low beam is fine . Two questions Im guessing no, but is this covered under 5yr warrentee ? and is it best to replace with stock light from Yamaha or is there a better light and where can I get it . thanks in advance for any advise
  4. The 2002 Venture I am picking up this week has the sealed beam passing lights. The dealer tells me that I would have to buy the light kit (including housings) for $137 if I want to switch to halogens (35W, H3 lamp). He also quoted $22 each for replacement sealed beam bulbs in case I just want to replace the existing lamps! Canadian prices are quite a bit higher than USA prices, but this seems a little out of line. If I decide to go with the halogen lamps, does anyone know whether I have to replace all of it or if I can just fit the new lenses and new reflector to the housings for the SB units- if so, where can I get these? If I can't switch to the halogens for a reasonable cost, what aftermarket sealed beam lamp is suitable? I am also thinking about changing the amber signal light lenses to the clear ones (with amber bulb). (Is the lens interchangeable?) The plastic lenses appear to be reasonably inexpensive but the front bulbs (dual filament - run, turn) are VERY expensive - a lot more than the lenses! It seems to me I read somewhere that you could buy a standard automotive lamp at a small fraction of the Yamaha price and file off one of the lugs to fit these sockets. What would be suitable for the rear bulbs (single filament, turn only). Thank you Ross
  5. Good Morning Everyone, I would like to replace my stock passing light bulbs with a brighter halogen lamp. However i'm not interested in increasing the amount of wattage draw on the system. My question is, what lamp would you recommend for this application? I would like a nice wide pattern not a narrow beam. I was told the Silver Star would work, but I dont know which one to look for. I like the super bright white look compared to the yellow tungsten. Forgot to mention i have the sealed beam type ! Thank you in advance for your suggestions! Please ride safe Frank
  6. Good Morning! I have a 2004 RSV with the factory light bar / driving lights. [The sealed beam lights] I know I asked the group the question about replacing the lights to get more light output before, but I can't find the thread or the answer ... Someone from this group told me about replacement sealed beam lights that are brighter than the factory lights, about the same wattage, and nearly plug and play. UH, they were from .... ????? J & S, J & P, I don't recall and can't find it here or even with a google search. Thanks!
  7. I've gone through the partial burning headlight bit and resoldered the cirquit. I double checked that a couple of weeks ago when I re-did all the contacts in there. The computer module does not show an error! Having said that, I got caught in a downpour and stopped under an overpass, when i crancked the bike back up I had no dashlights or head light. Running lights, accesory lights and tail light all worked. I assumed a blown fuse so I replaced that at my destination. Turned the key to check they were working, got a flash like a blown bulb and nothing. Still had driving lights so I figured I'd run those on the way home. When it was time to leave I cranked the bike up, no low beam as expected; wondered about high beam and that came on, switched back to low beam and that came on! What gives?? Since then I've had both low and high beam, I've had no lights at all and I've had the dash warning light on with both the low and/or high beam crapping out part ways. A couple of times rocking the switch seems to have "fixed" it but not always. I've got an oversized fuse in the panel now and the poles seem to be getting pretty warm. Not real keen on pulling the computer again. Seems like a power drain/short somewhere but have no clue where to start or how to find it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  8. Put on a new set of rear shoes today, and when I just took it for a test drive, my headlamp is not working...however, my high beam indicator stays on no matter where my switch is...any ideas?
  9. As always there are a lot of electrical issues coming up in these forums maney of which are ground related. Most go through a lot of agravation checking there grounds only to find out there is nothing wrong with the ground. True you should always eliminate any possible ground faults as a first step in diagnosing electrical issues. so here is a very useful and simple test to verify your ground condition. what you need a voltmeter a high beam headlight two 3 ft lengths of wire two aligator clips A) connect an alligator clip to one end of each wire B) connect the other end of each wire to a terminal on the high beam headlight 1) connect voltmeter to battery and record the voltage reading eg: 12V 2) connect the alligator clips from the high beam to the batt and record the resulting reading eg: 11.5 V the difference is your voltage drop eg: 0.5 v 3) disconnect the high beam aligator clip and the volt meter test lead from the neg post of the battery only 4) connect the volt meter neg lead to the engine block and read record the voltage reading eg: 12v 5) connect the alligator clip from the high beam to the same point on the engine block and not the voltage eg: 1) 11.2 v voltage drpo is relitivily close to that recorded in step (2) your ground to the engine is good you need not look any further. If for example your voltage upon connecting the high beam dropped to say for eg: 7v than you have a ground issue and need to locate it 6) repeat steps (4 & 5) but connect to the frame of the bike to test if the frame has a proper or faulty ground. this test takes only several minutes to perform and is far more reliable than using an ohmeter because an ohmeter does not load up the circuit which would pass under a light currant load but fail under a heavy load. slight modifications of this test can be used to load test any wire on the bike and will instantly reveal if a wire or circuit is sound or faulty with out having to tear the whole bike down eleminating a lot of unecessary work. By leaving the voltmeter and head light connected to the neg side of the battery and moveing the positive side connections in the same maner the positve side of you electrical system can also be tested you must take more care however when loading up the positve side of the electrical system to be sure you don't accidently load up a sensitive component in the sysem by mistake. In such case i often disconnect both ends of the circuit apply voltage to one end of the wire and connect my voltmeter and then my test load to the other end.
  10. Boy Guys and Gals, I could really use some help on this one! I am an IDIOT when it comes to electric problems! I had the 86'VR in the garage to replace the starter solenoid and after the work, the headlight will not come on when I turn on the key. No low beam or high beam. So far I have checked the fuse (good) and sprayed contact cleaner in the ignition switch with no good results. PLEASE help me!!! Earl
  11. My 83's previous owner had run a switch to the headlight. In working through some electrical issues I decide to tackle the headlight. I have low beam but when I use the switch for High beam nothing, no light or indicator light. What I have done so far: All connections have been taken apart and cleaned with contact cleaner making sure they are tight. Solder cold joints on CMS (this got the low beam working) and CLASS. Gave the handle bar switch for high beam a shot of cleaner but did not take it apart. Looking at the wiring diagram and reading in the service manual it is looking like I need to check the reserve lighting unit - if I just knew where it was and what I looks like. CMS show no fault codes now so I'm getting closer. Anyone have a clue as to what to check next. The information here on the website has been wonderful in bringing this ride back to life. Thanks All, Steve
  12. Hi. I've seen alot of traffic here on how to wire driving lights. Using a relay is the ONLY way to go, but there's the decision of whether the relay should trigger off the HI beam or not. When I first installed them, I wanted them to get power only when the headlight is on, and thru a separate switch. Therefore, I can turn them on or off, but if I leave them on when starting the bike they go off during starting (with the headlight) to reduce battery draw. So that's what I did, and it works well. However, the lights are blinding to oncoming traffic so if I'm on a country road and encountering frequent but not steady traffic, I'm constantly flipping both the HI/LO switch and the driving light switch (car coming, put headlight on LO and turn DL's off). That's why it's nice to have them on the HI beam circuit, but sometimes I like to have the LO beam on with the DL's (on my dirt road, for example). . So I had an epiphany which allows me the best of both worlds. I replaced the DL switch with a double-throw type of the same size. Center position is OFF, fwd position is ON (still tied to HL circuit as before), and back position is tied to the HI beam circuit. This is all for triggering the relay; the main DL power still goes thru the relay. It's pretty slick :-) Jeremy
  13. I took my 2007 RSV in to be inspected on Friday at a local gas station In Herndon Virginia. The inspector told me that the passing/driving lights and fog lights could only come on at low beam. Both the driving/passing lights on the light bar and the fog lights on the bottom of the forks have seperate switched. The driving/passing lights have a push button switch on the inside of the faring next to the power accessory plug and the fog lights have a switch that is attached to the gas tank. When I bought the bike from the dealer these were already installed by the PO. They inspected the bike with no problems. The inspector said he would let me go this time but does anyone know if this is true that they can only come on with the low beam?
  14. Replaced headlight about three months ago, h4 bulb. Wed, low beam not working, but high beam and modulator working fine. Thought I'd burnt out the low beam filiment? Since I was gona split the fairing, I bought the Silver star bright bulb, put it in this morning and still no low beam????????????????????????????? Any ideas?
  15. Hi, My 83 has a strange quirk. The headlight warning LCD and red warning light will come on. I checked the manual which says that indicates a headlamp failure, except my headlight is just fine, low beam and high beam. I have gotten off the bike to check them, as well as being able to see their reflection on cars/road signs ahead of me. If I flip on the high beam, leave it on for a sec then back off, the LCD indicator and red light will go away. Sometimes I dont see the false error for days, other times it will do it a dozen times in my one hour ride home. Has anyone else seen this? Paul
  16. This has had me stumpped for a while. Anyone have any ideas? I have a Kissan headlight modulator and typically ride with it on (brights on) during the daylight hours. With the brights on, I can see the headlight molation flashing ahead of me on the street signs in front of me - way high up on those signs. Additionally ..., the headlight modulation feature is not supposed to work in the dark. When I flip over to my low beam (if I happen to be riding at night), it seems to shed a decent flood of light out in front of me on the road, and I am happy with that adjustment. Of course, if I ride at night I will almost always just ride with my low beam on. However, sometimes when I want to reach-out a little further on up the road ahead of me (to light things up a bit more), when I flip-on the high beam it seems that it's aimed so high that it fails to throw any beam of light out on to the road ahead of me. Now, if I try and adjust the headlight with the adjustment mechanisms in the backside of the fairing in order to lower the high-beam, then the low-beam seems too low. Not that it seems like it should make any difference, but I also have a Silverstar Bulb for the headlight, and I have running lights hooked-up. So, I guess that my question is - How can I lower the high-beam without over-lowering my low-beam? Am I the only one who has noticed this before? Thanks! Pete.
  17. On previous bikes I've owned, I used to cause the low beam filament to be on all the time and just switch the high beam on and off for high or low beams. I would do this by getting into the headlight switch box and simply making a solder bridge across the low beam terminals. This would provide a whole lot more light out front, and was especially nice for night riding. I haven't done this on my current bike and I don't really know why not. I just haven't gotten a round tuit. I also don't do as much after dark riding as I used to. Has anyone else done this, or ever heard of it?
  18. I replaced my headlight with the H4. Last night I went out for a ride to check it. I got better visibility when it was in low beam than when it was in high beam. I checked and both elements are lighting up on high beam so I know the bulb is okay. I adjusted the headlight both up and down and still get the same results. Is it possible to put the H4 bulb in so that it would be 180 degrees out (or upside down so to speak)? When I look at the bulb on high beam it seems that the high beam filament is below the low beam element.
  19. Hi Folks: I have a high beam indicator with a mind of it's own. Blue light works if it feels like it and takes a break whenever... Sometimes after I've been out for awhile it will come on then works fine for the rest of the ride. Temperature and dampness do not seem to matter. Any ideas? Wayne
  20. Hi everyone, I think this is my first post. I had my low beam go out on my 83 Venture. I replaced the bulb and noticed the next time I hit the low beams it was again not working. I bought another H4 60/55 and immediately check the low beam and it's still not working. I've adjusted the headlight lower so that the high beam doesn't blind oncoming drivers but this also restrict the range that is lit when driving at night. Has anyone had this problem or any ideas what may be causing this problem.
  21. My low beam went out on me last night, but the high beam still worked. Had two things in my favor, 1) I was only 15 minutes or so from home and 2) have the driving lights, so I had a low beam for oncoming traffic. Looked up in the manual for some info on changing the bulb and it's an easy procedure, as long as the fairing isn't in the way. I don't have real big hands but it was a challenge to get at it from behind. Anyways got the bulb out. Came out here to see if there were any little secrets to the install, seems like everything I found online, was what I was experiencing first hand (no pun intended). I have an '01 RSV, so I'm going to assume that all the 2nd gens are the same. The adjusting knob for the the headlight slides off easily, you'll pick up some extra room to slide your hand in, install the new bulb and hook everything back up. Then just push the adjusting knob back on, it's just like a knob on a stove, has a flat side so just make sure you put it back on correctly.
  22. I think I know the answer to this before I ask but here goes. My headlight on on my 2005 RSV when placed in lo beam position doesn't come on, however high beam works fine. I am sure that the bulb has both stages in it. If this is correct how do I remove the headlamp assy. and replace the bulb? Thanks
  23. I want a brighter light for my 99 it looks as if the stock is sealed beam? What options are there that won't look to different then the passing lamps. I just want a whiter beam.
  24. On my 89 Venture, the headlight dimmer rocker switch is quite stiff to move. Tonight was my first night ride and I noticed I can get both the high beam and low beam to be on at the same time. It really isn't all that hard to do even driving on the highway. My question is will it harm anything to ride this way when no other traffic is around? The extra light is kind of nice. Thanks.
  25. I am a novice at this stuff but can follow directions with the best of them. I have two sets of after market lights from Wally World that I have mounted on the deflectors and foot pegs. Now I have to wire them. I want to have the first set on all the time the headlight is on (both high beam and low beam). Also want to be able to turn them off when working on the bike etc. so will probably need to place a switch somewhere. I want the second set to be on only when high beam is on. Don't think I will need a switch for this set. How, what and where I wire them in is what I need to know. What colors wires are what on the bike? How and where do I wire them into the bikes wiring? How and where do I mount a switch. Can I do it without splitting the fairing? Remember I am a newbie to this bike and while I am not totally mechanically challenged neither am I an engineering genius so instructions must be simple to follow. Thanks for any help with this
