  1. Which oil filter and brand of oil do you recommend?
  2. AFter a recent tear down of my '86 Royale, I am getting engine noise through the headsets. I can "hear" the spark of the engine. Might my noise filter be toast? I made sure I routed everything the way it was, and the ground good too. Any suggestions? I had a crystal clear intercom/radio/CB until this, and it's pretty frustrating! Any help would be appreciated
  3. Ok,ok.. It's probably a stupid question, but as I have said before, I have electrical knowledge and not much mechanical, so I would rather ask a dumb question than risk messing something up. I just went thru the seafoam proceedure and do not wish to start the bike up until I put a new filter in it, but after locating that filter I see that I cannot even get a finger in there, let alone tools to get it removed/replaced. The metal band around the current filter seems to be bolted from underneath and the fuel line (towards the engine) looks like it would be lost, or at least very difficult to retrieve if it slips down into the abyss. Can someone please give me an easy step-by-step fuel filter removal proceedure? Is removing this a delicate surgery with long needle nose pliers and lots of swear words part of the deal? Thanks Muchly... Johnnie
  4. I seem to have a bit of oil seepage from my oil filter housing (1st generation). It seems to be coming from around the large O-ring that seals the oil filter housing 'cup' to the block....the center bolt area O-ring area is dry. I've just installed a new O-rings again and after about 100 km it seems to want to start seeping again. It seems to be very minimal seepage....not even leaving drops on the floor. Any thoughts on me getting a tight seal on this (without me going to the spin on filter adapter)??? Thanks!
  5. why does the petcock valve have "screens" on it? to me , it makes more sense, to let rust particles, water, trash in general, get OUT of the fuel tank, and get trapped in the fuel filter. isn't that why the fuel filter is there in the first place? just jt
  6. Was tracing out the overflow tube (Fuel Breather Tube) on my 06RSV from the gas tank to see which of the tubes under the bike corresponded to that tube. Anyways, I noticed under the seat the tube has what appears to be an inline filter before exiting out the bottom & venting to the ground. Is there really a filter inline? If so, why on an overflow tube? Just wondering...thanks!
  7. I changed out my stock air filters today with K&N's. When I took off the right side (looking at bike from front I found about 1/2 teaspoon of oil in rubber hose leading to filter case. Is this normal or should I be looking for dealer? Thanks, Ride safe and God Bless. Mike
  8. Hey guys, what do you use in lieu of a yamaha fuel filter, mine is plugged after a tank with seafoam!!!! Any part #s come to mind
  9. Hey, How does one go about cleaning a K&N air filter without buying their cleaning kit? They say not to use gas, oil, kerosene, tranny fluid, ETC.. Someone said awhile back to use mineral oil to dampen the filter, but didn't mention what he used to clean it. Got one coming due shortly Thankx Gary C
  10. According to my manual on the '97 RSTD it shows oil quantity as follows: Total amount: 4.6 US qt. Periodic oil change: 3.7 US Qt With Oil filter replacement: 3.9 US qt. Now, If the manual shows 3.9 quarts required if the filter is changed how does that add up to 4.6 qts total? But what I really need to know is, if I change the filter, how many quarts should I put in? Secondly, if I don't change the filter this time, how many quarts should I put in?
  11. OK I need some help! I'm installing a '86 up CB in Goldie and I'm sort of temporarily stuck for some parts. I need the DIN cable from the CB to the amp, and all of the wiring harness for the CB from the unit to the switches, and to the noise filter. I have the noise filter but not the connector. I can hot wire the CB if necessary but would prefer the harness for a more professional, and removable installation. I definately need the din cable as the radio shack version is not a right angle head. Let me know what youy have and how much you need...
  12. Last Friday, I got together with Rob and Charlie in Mississauga, and did my 2nd oil change, and synch'd my carbs. With the oil, we changed both oil and filter. I put in the Yamalube 20/50. The 3 of us checked the oil level, started the bike ran it, let the oil settle and left it at halfway on the sight glass. Very strange, I checked the level today with the bike level again, and now the oil is full on the sight glass. We put in 3.2 litres, as an estimate from the jug. Where the heck did the extra oil come from? We fully drained the crankcase, and removed filter. I don't see any oil dripping, but how could it be more full without adding any oil? Just one of those unexplained mysteries I guess.
  13. Just what to know the best place to order a filter and stuff online? I just cant seem to find the time to getr to a dealor for a new filter.
  14. I saw on another site a modification to use a fram CA-37-17 air filter in a 1st gen air box. the filter lies flat across the air box with an adapter plate that sits where the ground off inside lip of the airbox was. has anybody tried this? is there potential problems with this type of mod? it sure would save soome cash if this really works. paru
  15. is there any other air filter for the rstd than yamaha and k-n ?????
  16. Is Fram #PH6017A the right filter. I've always had good luck with them, especially as often as I change oil. TIA, Eddie
  17. time for first 600 miles oil and filter change, question ? would you go ahead and put the mobile 1 4t synthetic in now or wait. also do you need a filter wrench that fits a rachet or a regular one with a handle. just wanted to know before i start changing in the next few days. thanks, mike b.
  18. I just installed a Sirius radio on my Venture. Works great but I am getting engine feedback/noise. My riding buddy has XM on a Shadow and has the same problem. Mine is connected via the socket on the fairing, soon to be hard wired. The Shadow is hardwired with a filter. Anyone have this problem? Is there a way to get rid of it? If I go fast enough I don't notice it as much Thanks, John
  19. Quickly glancing through the owners manual, I see no reference to oil filter or fuel filter yamaha parts numbers. Does anyone know these? Perhaps there are aftermarket filters that would work..ie NAPA or such? Thanks for the help.
  20. :confused24:Dh and I've been working on my uncle's '83 Venture Royale for the last couple of days. The license plate has a '96 sticker, leading us to believe the beast hasn't been ridden in 12 years. We've got it running on three cylinders. The fourth hits occasionally. We're using seafoam in the gas. After letting the one carb to the can that's not hitting soak with seafoam overnight, it's doing better, but the engine will quit if dh takes it off choke and takes his hand away from blocking the air intake. He's going to see if the float is stuck. The cylinder is getting spark, and the carb seems to be getting fuel. It's just not sending the mixture to the cylinder. We're trying to avoid rebuilding the cylinders, if we can. We will rebuild them, if we must We changed the fuel filter. The fuel pump has not been replaced. The fuel pump is only pumping fuel in spurts. The fuel filter isn't filling up. Is it supposed to pump constant or only periodically? Is the fuel filter supposed to fill? The petcock is plastic and brittle. Most of what plastic was sticking out to turn has broken off. It needs replacing, but we want to know if there's a metal one to replace it with. I see replacement petcocks on the internet for $36, but they're plastic. Is there an alternative? We have a service manual, but haven't found any information about adjusting cam chains. Is there a way to adjust cam chains? There's a rattling, and we'd like to figure out if it's just chains that need to be adjusted of if we need to anticipate adjusting the valves, not a happy prospect. *wish it weren't shims*
  21. Most of us know what the owners manuel says but someone I respect said that it was wrong and that you should put only 3.3-3.5 quarts of oil back in after a change with the oil and filter. He said you fill to the lower mark, not the upper mark. I just wanted to start this thread to see what every one else does. I filled mine to the upper mark which was 3.9 quarts like the book says. Here is his quote on the matter: I am just searching for the truth on the matter.
  22. Hi everyone. Last weekend I put on my punched out R/K mufflers and I absolutly love them, great deeeeep rumble just right!!! When I punched them out I put several small holes on the inlet side baffles, and about six 3/8" holes on the outlet plate at the back side of the muffler if you are looking at the back of the mufflers while mounted on the bike. You can also look straight through the muffler from the inlet side to the outlet side as the center baffles were removed when I got them. Now for my question. I can smell unburned fuel/fumes not only while warming up the scoot but also while riding on my 25 mile commute to work, does this mean that the bike is now running rich and needs to have the carbs ajusted or the bike tuned due to being able to breathe better? I have never had this bikes carbs tuned as I have just bought it in January. However I did do a tune up with plugs, fuel filter, checked air filter, used some marvel mystery oil in with the gas on a tankfull, and I put a fresh oil and filter change with mobil 1 mc oil. It seems to run well I just wonder if it could be running better or if this fuel smell is normal with what I have done???? Has anyone ever run into this before? As always any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You All in advance. Big Mike
  23. When I got my 03 RSV I got 4 qts of oil Yamalube 10w30 Non-friction and yamaha filter #3FV-13440-10 is this right for my 03 RSV? I got from owner of bike and dont need to buy any if this is the right filter and oil can anyone tell me. Joe
  24. I have a oil filter with part number Yamaha 3FV-13440-10 and the one I took off my RSV 03 is a 5GH-13440-00 can I use the 3FV one on my RSV? I dont want to screw things up. The differance I can see is one is a little longer and the filter ribs inside are a little differant. Joe
  25. The manual suggests 20W40 or 10W30. I have seen the debate re: synthetic vs. dino and I think I will go with dino. Any suggestions on the weight ? Also, does anyone know if I can still get a filter from Yamaha ? Is this a stock item (because it is the same as more recent bikes use) or will I have to order the filter in advance ?? What about the final gear ? 80W90 hypoid gear oil is recommended in the manual. Looks like I need a special tool to dip down and measure the level. Don't have the tool. Where should the level be ? As usual, thanks guys.
