  1. Someone asked me how I converted my Tape Deck to a MP3 Player. The best info I have is here: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41100 I used Scotty's and Frankd's schematics to come up with one that works between the two. Here is a simplified color diagram I created. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b160/warthogcrewchief/SimpliedInstructionsforMP3Input.jpg Here is where I located my 3PDT switch. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b160/warthogcrewchief/100_0955.jpg Here is the "tray" I made out of (aprox.) 1/4" thick clear acrylic plastic. I cut it out using a dremel and razor blades and then glued them using plastic glue. I got some simple hinges and drilled holes and screwed in screws (put plastic glue on threads). http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b160/warthogcrewchief/100_0956.jpg I then cut off the rest of the screw that protruded through the plastic (cut slowly because it heats up fast!). After that, I placed a drop of glue over the rest of screw in hopes of it staying in place. After it's all dry and the holes are cut, I painted it with flat black paint on the inside and the blue paint to match the outside. Oh, almost forgot the magnetic latch assembly I installed as well... It was a pain to cut the plastic out and get it to fit...lots of glue to fill the voids. I also had to cut into the plastic face to make it fit. Notice the screws I used to hold it in place so that it doesn't shift. That may be required to keep it in place. Once again, cut off the excess protruding screw and cover it with either RTV or glue to prevent any scratching of items placed in there and backing out of screw. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b160/warthogcrewchief/100_1056.jpg I found a "marine" grade 12V outlet. In installed it and then made one wire connect to a ground on the frame. The other wire connects to the right side of my accessory fuse spade and then the left side of the accessory fuse connects to the positive battery terminal. NOTE: I'm using the fuse box made by Skydoc_17 that mounts in place of the factory fuse box. *Something not mentioned in my schematic is that the common (ground) wire inside the 3.5mm headset wire is usually unshielded wire wrapped around each (Left and Right stereo) wire. You'll have to unravel the bare wire and twist the two together to make a common ground that connects to the black wire from the bike's cassette harness. EDIT: Here is where I found the "Marine Grade" 12v Outlet at Amazon.com [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Marine-Grade-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket/dp/B0002KRC5Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1274422515&sr=8-2]Amazon.com: Marine Grade Cigarette Lighter Socket 12 VDC: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31BRN43V71L.@@AMEPARAM@@31BRN43V71L[/ame]
  2. Purchased 99 Venture and found prior owner covered up anchors that attach the box to the frame. Several of the screws have pulled through the plastic bottom and it has several cracks and small holes where the plastic has broken. Joe has put me in touch with an offer on e-bay that has a bokttom for sale in the correct color (plum and silver) but they are asking $400.00 for it. Anyone who has a box for 2nd gen for sale?
  3. In the last several days I've heard a click or klak when pulling away from a stop and when starting to decelerate. It is a single klak which seems more like a knock on hard plastic than metal on metal. It does seem to come from the front but not sure where. Any suggestions where to start looking?
  4. I have a CB, with the antenna, the splitter, and all the pieces it plugs into, except a white plastic plug. I look a little and couldn't find where it would go to, am i looking wrong? Also, if there is no plug-in for it, where can i buy one?
  5. Finished the clutch today and it went well, but I noticed while cleaning up that below the clutches and to the right there is a gear in there that is white and looks to be plastic. Now I know I could have checked it with a magnet to see but didn,t think of it until I closed it all back up and torqued it. Any one know for sure or notice it also. Don,t think it is plastic but why would it be white.
  6. I am just now reassembling my 86 VR after much TLC over the winter. Question: has anyone left the black air dampers off the engine? {just on top of the valve covers}. Any reason to use them? I want to thank all the technical contributers here for their work, it has helped alot on my project! The list.... removed fairings and fixed all the plastic cracks with epoxy and "glass, and repainted fixed class computer rebuilt the suspension/bushings with the zerks, lubed shaft etc removed the stereo/cb and all related components and replaced the plastic covers with stock non-VR parts [about 30 lbs of stuff} replaced the seat with aftermarket {bought used from here} replaced fork seals and front brakes replaced the pipes with new Macs {bought here} adjusted valves, tuned, carbsync etc I only rode the bike once after buying it last fall... so I am itching to get going! Thanks, Gary
  7. Since I could not load the bikini side panel pictures on your PM, I will try it here. I cut the bottom section to the length I wanted and then used a heat gun to soften the plastic to bring it to a point. I then used Devcon Plastic Weld to fill and very little body filler to smooth it out. I also narrowed the top section some to make it blend with the fairing better. I hope this helps some. RandyA
  8. This may qualify as a silly question...but I'm asking anyway. Does anyone put the clear plastic cover over their GPS screen? I am reluctant to put it on as there might be some coating on the screen???? It is a Garmin 660. Thanks for input.
  9. Has any one used a Precicion Plastic wind sheld ? Do you like it or not? thanks for input!
  10. Thomas Liquid Stainless Steel My buddy ordered the kit he's going to try it on his black plastic parts on his scoot http://www.liquidstainlesssteel.com/learnhow.html
  11. Posted this in "Want to buy" classifieds. Probably shoulda posted it here for better response. Anyway, I'm looking for a 1st Gen plastic cassette raincover for my 1988VR. Any ideas where I can find one? There probably aren't any venders offering new ones, are there? Thanks for any help. Rusty
  12. It sounds worse than it really is... At some point in its long life, my new to me '89 VR had fallen on its right side and damaged the chin fairing. One of the bolt holes on this side has been torn completely away. I'm wondering if someone might have a damaged chin laying around with a good right side? My plan is to graft this side onto mine using some glue I got from the plastic supply place. They say it's supposed to make a molecular bond with ABS plastic. We'll see when I try to repair the cracks... Any thoughts or help is appreciated.
  13. I doubt it, this is the most snow i've seen in my life, and i've seen alot of snow! Its freezing out, and of course my car dies at an intersection and wont start. Maybe thats why they say tempos aren't made for busting drifts! Either way, it was too cold to walk, so i just stayed put trying to figure out the problem, but lo' and behold my hood release latch froze to the inside of my car, so i pulled about a foot's worth of plastic out of place. Good thing its an 85' that i only paid 350 for!!!! PS does anyone have any extra first gen pipes they would like to sell for really cheap? THANKS!!!
  14. Any insight on welding ABS plastic? Equipment used? Brand, Model #... so on and so forth. Airless or air? I am looking at an airless with temp control and was wondering if anyone here has some experience. I have done bodywork back in the day, I weld and have the patience to to these kind of repairs. Just thought I would ask the group for their advice. Bubber aka Steve
  15. Some of you are aware I had a little accident on the RSV last friday afternoon. The shop called and the repair bill came to $20,522.61 before even checking the frame. Needless to say it's totaled. I really loved that bike and my wife and I had a lot of great times in the 2yrs and 34K miles we got to put on her. On the other hand, It is only plastic and metal and I walked away. Kind of have mixed feelings right now. I'll be looking for a new bike in the near future but I doubt it will be an RSV. The next bike I buy will have ABS since I'm pretty sure the wreck I had could have been avoided if I'd had it.
  16. I just ran into these ebay items in Florida and they should go pretty cheap, as they're pick-up only. If it were local I'd pick the stuff up for spare plastic...just because. 320437690094, 320437687937
  17. I have a 2006 RSTD. The front right screw that holds on the tank cover "chrome" is not coming out. It turns, but is not coming out. I can feel behind it, and something rubbery feeling is turning with the screw. What is this? Any idea on how to get the screw out? It was at the dealer, who performed the 26.6K valve clearance service, and they took off the tank. I was going to call Tuesday (closed tomorrow), because they left off the black plastic screw caps from the gas tank bolts. Now I see that they lost three of the little plastic washers from the ignition cover. And this screw looks to be overtightened or something. What is it with dealer service? *sigh* Dave
  18. My bike failed to crank and what I found was the fuse on the side of the starter silenoid was corroded, more than likely from road salt from being ridden in north Ga. What I did was removed the silenoid assem. removed the plastic peice that hold the fuse and the wiring harness plug, then pulled the metal prongs the fuse and plug mounts to out, the top peiced that bolts to the hot side of the silenoid I removed completely. Bought a fused link ( heavy duty $3.99 at oriely's) soidered a electrical end on one end of the link, and the other end to the spot where the fuse plugged to the blades that the wiring plug connects to. You have to grind some of the plastic away to put the blades back in. But now my fuse is behind ths side cover, and easy to access. I should have taken pictures but was in a hurry to get the bike running. if anyone else is having this problem and wants to perform this fix let me know and I will try to draw a diagram, or come help if your close enough. Gregg
  19. I saw on another site that plastic can be repaired with inexpensive PVC glue. While I haven't tried it yet, it makes sense. IIRC Lowes has glue for ABS drain pipe, which may even be better. Any one ever try this route?
  20. Ok so, I bought a new jigsaw and blades just for trimming/lowering my wind screen(any excuse for a new toy). Marked off a nice arc, oddly enough using the chrome plastic screen trim as a template worked well. Started jig-sawing away and it was going great, clean line, cutting quite nicely to mid-point. Then had to remove the blade from the screen to switch to the left side. Shoulda let the blade stop first I guess, made a little gouge but, no biggie. Starting from the left, it cut through quite nicely again till I reached the arc I had already cut from the right side. To my surprise, the cut piece didn't fall away, as it should have.... Apparently, that lil blade was quite hot and as I cut the left side in towards middle, it was melting the plastic and the sucker very effectively reglued itself to where I just cut it from, if that makes sense. So firm that, I couldn't break it free, for fear of breaking too much. Tried again through where I just cut and it melted/reglued still! Had to hold the plastic screen away as I cut, to finally get the pieces to release. Much sanding was needed to get it all smooth, pics later. It looks good. Soooooo, did I have the saw on too high a speed or should I simply take breaks as I go along? The first cut on the right side worked great, the 2nd cut from the left is where things got....hot.
  21. NO SMART REMARKS!!!!! I don't have the little plastic dip stick for the rearend oil. Can somebody at least give me a measurement off of there's so I can make my own? I would very much appreciate it.
  22. I knew that plastic Venture rider card would come in handy. I forgot my keys so i used your card to open the back door of my house The card is vey useful I scraped the bugs of my windshield Used it as a fan Here's a photo Dray soliciting his card to a member 99 silver,, :rotfl:
  23. On the way home from Big Tom's M&E this morning, Earl (Skydoc) and Gary were changing lanes to enter a gas station and Gary got sideswiped by a car on the right side. They had just left an intersection at a light when this happened. Luckily this was a low speed accident and Gary is fine even though he did go down. The bike should be easily repairable with mostly plastic damage. The main problem is a ruptured plastic elbow for the water pump being cracked and all the coolant is gone. There is a trailer on the way to pick up the bike and bring it over here where we can piece it back together. I should have everything we need to get him back on the road again.
  24. Was wondering if any of you have had this issue... i have a 2007 RSV I was looking at the bike last weekend and noticed the lower cowling on the Left side of the bike (as your sitting on it) was cracked in several places. ~2" long total, 2 or 3 cracks where the plastic screw in piece/protrusion joins the cowling. I took the cowling off and found the vent tube that is mounted near the back of the air intake was dripping oil down into the cowling. Not enought to have it run out the bottom of the cowling, but enought that it pooled a bit by the plastic mounting bracket on the cowling. The bracket/protrusion was broken clean off. So, couple of questions.. what is it venting and why would there be that much oil? I've had the bike for about a month, have had the cowling off to install some chrome, and this is the first time I've had oil leaking. The vent tube did appear to be butted square against the air intake (so it wasn't venting freely) if that make a difference... If the oil was sitting on the abs cowling, would that weaken the plastic enough to have normal vibration cause the cracks? I didn't drop it or bang it against anything, its almost as if the cracks came from stress of the cowling nuts being over tightened? Just to make it fun, the dealer was the last one to take the cowling off and re-install it. I'd appreciate any thoughts... Bob
  25. Apparently, I had a screw loose (in more ways than one, I'm sure), but this one was on my '07 Venture, and it's no longer loose, it's gone! Darn! I hate loosing parts. My probably with this one in particular, is that I can't locate it in Yamaha's exploded microfiche. The dealer can't find the part number either. We're both stumped. Let me try and explain where and what it is. There is a section of plastic (ABS) directly in front of the left floorboard. I always called it "Cowling", but perhaps that's not the correct term for that part. Anyway, directly in front of my left floorboard in that plastic piece, there is a place for a screw of some type. That's what's missing off my bike. The plastic piece now rattles a bit, and vibrates at speed. I would like to know a Yamaha Part number for that particular screw if possible. And, even more importantly . . . exactly what size and type of screw I would need to replace it correctly. Any assistance would certainly be appreciated. Thanks! Pete & Sandy
