  1. I realized today that I didn't want to ride to Big Bend on the cheapy emergency tire I got on my last trip. Doh! I ordered a tire that should arrive Thursday. What are my mounting options? I want to do the Texas Honor Ride this Saturday. Are there any weeknight options that can get it done between now and this next Thursday, when we leave for Tom's and Big Bend? Maybe I should buy the Harbor Freight setup and do it myself? Can I take it to an auto tire shop and have them do it? Or do I miss the THR so I can have a motorcycle place do it Saturday? Dave

Given the choice, which is the better tire EMO the brigstone or dunlop 404. Have only got 10500 miles and need new rear tire after 12 months. Open to all suggestions Thanks!
  3. are needed for a kumho tire ( 165/80R15 ) ? Anybody have any experience with this yet ?
  4. Installing a c/t: once mounted use a good lube STP or WD-40 this will help the c/t seat to the rim. With these lube several tires we have done have seated with 75-80 lbs. We have mounted Kumbo,Nexen and BFG,All seated with less air ...AFTER instalation ride for a while,,there is a breakin faze for the driver. You will notice the tire seems to sway if the tire preasure is to hi,,tire preasure does better in range between 30-38 u need to play with it. Tha breaking inincerased,,the tire pad is larger.. The cost for a c/t $70 plus 44k miles,,,for a m/t $130 + and mabe 5k (If u ride hard) enjoy and PLEASE take it slow for a few miles... "PRAY FOR OUR TROOPS"
  5. I'm going to try to change the front tire myself on my 86VR....40 years ago I used to work part time at Sears changing tires so I'm no stranger to the process.. Has anyone used a "C" clamp to break the bead and large screwdrivers to remove the tire from the rim?..It seems easy at face value but I'd like to hear from people that have actually done it... BTW: I figured diluted liquid soap and a paint brush ought to work when replacing the tire to get the bead slippery enough to fit the tire, with a little persuasion, over the rim...
  6. Sleeperhawk is in the process of installing his new instrument panel. He had painted it this week and it really looks good! Pecker came over to help and supervise. Wanderer and Patricia came by a little while ago to get the rear tire removed and Ted was taking it to town to get a car tire mounted on the rim. He just got back and they are in the process of putting it back on the bike. More pictures to come later! (By the way, Sleeperhawk cringed at the first drilling into the front panel!)
  7. Can I replace the valve(rubber and stem) without taking the tire off the rim Thanks!
  8. I'm debating whether to buy a pair of Shinko tires..The price is enticing but I can't seem to escape the old addage " you get what you pay for" My question is: has anyone put over 15k on this tire and can offer a positive testimonial after doing so... Inquiring mind wants to know Thanks
  9. I was ridding behind my wife on her road star, she has bridgestone mc tires, the rear tire has worn flat in the middle. The thing I noticed is the fact that when she leans the bike in a curve, the tread lifts off the pavement, and there is very little tire contact with the pavement. So I began to closely watch all the bikes I was following around daytona. What I saw was the same, when you lean a bike, even with the MC tire gound contact is reduced, some more than others. It appears to me, that the CT on the back of my venture maintains more ground contact than the motorcycle tire. Just an observation Gregg
  10. Just curious - how many has plugged your flat tire on your car or truck ? I've been doing it for years without a failure and decided to plug my Kumho after I found that miniscule needle in it yesterday. It held 55# of pressure overnight so I have no doubt it will run it's life on my Venture. That is unless I manage to find another nail in the same tire.

    I need some help please

My 09 Venture with 2k miles on is pulling to left and gets a wobble at 20 to 40 mph with no hands on it.. Dealer said the wobble is normal with no hands and the pulling to the left could be a tire and depends on yama mood and all they may replace it or may not.. My question is here does this sound like a tire issue and is the wobble sound right, it does not happen all the time, the pulling does...The air pressure in the forks is 0
  12. Well it’s official, I went for my first ride tonight on a 165/80/15 Kumho PowerStar and I was not disappointed. It was just a short run (about 60 mi.) on familiar roads so as to compare the handling. The tire was pressured up to 40psi with 2oz of Dino Beads... it felt great. I bought the tire from the good folks up at ‘OK Tire’ in Stony Creek Ontario for $75. CDN Installed (I brought in the wheel off the bike). They had a bit of a time seating the tire to the rim and had to use an air-blaster to make it catch but said that they’ve had tougher jobs. I’m not sure how much pressure it took to seat the bead but it was up there. They’re great people to deal with and said they would do it again. They did a great job and I give them two thumbs up! Thanks to all those who have posted their comments and opinions (pro’s & con’s) on CT’s, it has all been interesting reading. I value all your opinions and have been reading with interest for well over a year. Now if I can only find an economical way to make it a White Wall, I like what 'eagleeye' has done with his tire!
  13. This is probably a dumb question, but here goes anyway... Approx. 7k ago, I replaced my stock tires with Avons. Everything has gone okay until lately. They started making noise on the lean. So I checked them and I think they are cupping. I have kept 41ish pounds in them, per the service manual. I almost always ride two-up. Now tonight I hopped on it and it feels weird up to about 30 to 40mph. Almost sluggish with the turns, I thought I had a low tire, so I checked it again, this time with 2 different tire guages. They both read 40ish psi. What are the chances of these Avons needing a different tire pressure than the book says? I'd swear that the tire looks like it has been run quite a while with low pressure - which as I said above, I always keep at 40ish psi. craigr
  14. Does anyone have a roar in their rear tire? I've had my 04 RSV for 2 weeks now, only 8K miles so they are the original tires. Maybe it's just me, but I think the roar is a little much for a motorcycle. No complaints at all, it just seems weird to me. Ben
  15. Well, I decided to be the "test subject" for the new Shinko touring tires. My old Metzler 880's (which came on the bike when I bought it) were crappola. I've never seen a rear tire with such a "sawtooth" wear pattern. It's hard to describe, but I think you could use it as a large sawblade and cut paneling with it. The shop that changes my tires had never seen anything like it either. Rode ok in a straight line on smooth pavement, but curves weren't even fun anymore....bike vibrated like crazy with just a small amount of lean. Plenty of tread left but couldn't stand those tires anymore. Anyway, I had my shop order and install the new Tourmaster 230's. I've only got about 100 miles on them so far but will be putting a bunch of miles on this coming weekend on our Southern Indiana trip. Thus far I am impressed. Smooth....quiet....seem to grip well. And SO responsive. The bike seems to know which way I want to turn before I do....just a small input on the handlebar and the bike responds instantly. I didn't realize how much effort it took to turn with the old tires on it. Granted, any new tire will seem to be great when compared to ones like I was running. I will keep everyone posted on how these tires work out. At present you can order a set for the 2nd gens from Pinwall Cycle for $163 delivered anywhere in the USA. That's not a typo, $163 for BOTH front and rear.
  16. What is the rear tire size for the Dunlop Elite 3?????? Is it different than the stock? I put the smaller e-3 on the front and I love it. Now it is time for the rear and I am trying to find one on-line (I have access to tire equipment). Thank you in advance, always great advice here. '03 Venture Wayne
  17. Front tire went down 65mph two up.Slide about 200' both of us stayed with the bike until we hit shoulder.Minor scrapes & bumps totaled 07 venture. Tire had 3000 miles on it new valve stem when tire was changed. No hole in tire valve stem rubber cracked.Never thought bad valve stem but i will now.And yes i do check my tires before every ride.
  18. After removing the trunk I took my first good ride sunday on some good twisties! The C/T feels alot better than before. I didn't feel like I was drifting in the turns like before. I think the extra weight off of the bike made the tire more stable. I put over 5K miles on the tire with the trunk and couldn't get the feel but after one day without it I'm thinking of staying on the darkside with the star glide. http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc340/MARKANDBINA/starglide001.jpg
  19. Well, I've been eying an 06 in Denver and made plans to go down and check it out yesterday. Start off and get about 20 miles down, to Longmont, and here a loud pop at the back of the bike... You know, the kind of pop that you here if your back tire catches a rock just right. Bike seemed to handle okay and nothing seemed to be wrong so I continued. About 10 miles later, at the Lafayette/Brighton exit, I feel the bike getting, kind of squirley... Hmmm could be the rain grooves but I've never had a problem with the Avons on rain grooves before. I push right on the handle bar just a hair and the back end starts to fish tail and scared the crap out of me. I think "I've heard enough flat tire stories on the VentureRider forum to know that this is how the bike handles when you have a flat rear tire. I immediately pull over to the shoulder and try to assess the situation. Sure enough flat tire. Rolled the bike forward and kept looking for a hole but I really couldn't see much of anything. Then the tire went completely flat. You think pushing this thing is hard with 2 good tires? Try it with one flat. I had called Leland and, when he got there, we used his Slime pump and pumped it up some (I had also called progressive for Roadside assistance) We determined that there was a slit, about 1.5" to 2" long on the right middle of the tire about half on the surface of the tire and the other half going down into one of the grooves. I wasn't too sure his patch kit would be of much use and, about the time we were going to try, the tow truck showed. Had it towed to a local Royal Star shop and had to order another Avon (Thanks Goose for the confirming that I wanted the H Venom... The people on this site are a Godsend!!). While I waited for transportation home Leland and I went to the dealer where the 06 was. Nice bike but it had been sitting and the guy thought it was running funny so he pulled the plugs and found the fronts fouled. So I didn't get to ride it but it looks sweet. May have to run over for a test ride when I go back to get my bike. Don't know if the man upstairs is trying to tell me I shouldn't get the 06 or if my bike was jealous and doesn't want me to get it but I really don't like the way either of them told me. I think the Ride-on allowed me to go the 10 miles at 75mph. but it did come out all over the mudflap and the swing arm. As I think back on it, that 10 miles bought me a lot less, dense traffic so I could pull over more easily and an extra lane as the road adds another lane about 3 or 4 miles up the road. So I'm thankfull for that. Tire had, almost exactly, 10,000 miles on it and it looked about 1/2 used up. But then it was a V tire and they wear faster than the H.
  20. Ahhh, Leaving on a trip Thursday for a few and also next week. I ordered the car tire and the jerks at Tire easy never e-mailed confirmation or answered a phone.....Heck I need a tire so I have to run 60 miles and pay $199 for an elite II due to the time frame. I get home and sitting at my door is the Kumho tire??? Now that's a pain in the ass... With business prep I can't mount this tire (time) and have it scheduled for a morning install locally. I sure liked the look of the kumho and am sure the $199 + Tax tire is going back to the dealer (I hope). I wish Tire Easy had communicated or kept their site updated. It would have saved me 1/2 a day today and 1/2 on the return....Sometimes it just gets complicated:doh:
  21. Last week I installed a Shinko 230 Tour Master front tire, V-rated, on my 1988 Venture Royale. I ordered it from Motorcycle Superstore, at a good price -- less than $70 including shipping. I went on a 200-mile ride on lots of "invisible roads" with twisties, straight sections, and a short section of high-speed interstate. All roads were dry. Excellent response from this tire, rather quiet -- much quieter than the Continental it replaced. No problems of any kind. Still to report: How it handles on wet roads, and how long it will last. If the tire passes these two tests, then it's a helluva bargain. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  22. Hey guys... Can you guys post the actual tire part numbers for your combos? I hear about the kumoho, but which tire? And apparently there's different sizes of the cobras and such?? I hear some saying to use the "thinner" version for the front some people use? I'm pretty interested in this. Especially for the reduced cost and increased milage- I'm really interested! I have a used bike and just don't know how old/many miles on the tires, plus, they're brickstones. if it's affordable, I'll switch now... rs
  23. I did stupid Things yesterday... I took the '09 Vmax and rode to the Hockenheim Ring to go Drag Racing ... I did four Runs on the perfect Pro-Prepared Raceway and came home safe and sound, but very exhausted. It was a very hot Day and the Line-up Organisation was not so good. I did four Runs and came out not to good.... Here are my Results ... metric http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/DragZeiten.jpg and imperial http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/Hockenheim08082009mph.jpg I screwed up in first Run, because i realized at around 1/8 Mile, that i have some Remainder on the Throttle Grip to achieve Full Throttle. Second Runs wasn't feeling bad. My Wrist took over for a Moment in the 3rd Run because i went over a small Patch of Oil breaking the rear Tire loose for a Moment. Forth Run wasn't feeling too bad, but my Body felt exhausted and overheating, nothing special that i recall there. Times at low 12 Seconds are whimpy seeing the Bike and what other Riders do with it in US. A Buddy of mine ran 12.0 in his first Run and continously improved to 11.007 in his 4th Run. There were probably around 2 or 3 Thousand Spectators on the Stands after noon. It was Kind of Fun and truely a special Expirience, I'd do it again if there's a Chance. I ran Part of the Road Racer Track on the Way back to the Pits and this was Fun too. Closed Circuit with no oncoming Traffic ... I evened out the Profile of rear Tire immediately after flattening it out out at the Pre Start Burn Out.
  24. Finally got the brickstone off and the cobra mounted on frount. Avon Cobra 150/80R/16 Radial Going from the brick to the cobra radial, improved ride and handling, I knew the ride would be much better, but I did not realize that the handling would be so drastically improved. The brickstone had plenty of tread but rode like a brick, and apparently made the bike handle bad. Road to my Dr. appointment today up I-75 and was very happy, rides and handles like my 2000 RSV did, but without the chrip. The cobra is the perfect mate for the kumho on back. Trust me the cobra is the frount tire for the darkside, its the right size and its a frount radial not a rear running backward. Tire came from bikebandit order Sunday evening before and went to work, got it tuesday. tire was 154.95 plus 7.95 shipping, tire dealer in town put in on the rim $10. Gregg
  25. I pulled in to the driveway Friday and felt the rear end wobble and within 50-75 feet I could tell I was getting a flat and stopped and checked to find the rear tire was flat. It's a new Dunlop Elite 3 with maybe 500 miles on it. I walked the mile down the driveway and got my portable air tank and went to the tire store and aired it up. Got my wife to follow me down the driveway and that was a good move. When I aired it up I could hear a big leak and felt around with my hand and found a nice stream of air in the center of the tread. I was only able to go about 1 minute before I could feel it getting loose again. I dind't want to ride it flat at all, so I aired it up and rode it and aired it up three more times to get back to my house. I have a gravel driveway and no place to jack it up safely, so I'll be trailering her down to Ken's Discount Tires in Woodstock Ga where I bought the tires. Kens is a mom and pop motorcycle tire store and besides being really nice, they seem to know their business. I've got an appointment Friday afternoon and they are recommending a tube be installed. I know I've read some who have plugged their tires and had no problems, and I've always chosen to have my AUTO tires removed from the wheel and patched on the inside. This is what I expected on the Venture. Do you think a tube is the way to go? I'm thinking he will patch the hole in addition to installing a tube. Maybe I could take it somewhere else and get it patched if that's a better repair. I just want to choose the best possible repair. Thanks! James
