  1. To go back to the original post - I dropped a BMW R1150RT once when parked. I pulled up after a 500kms ride in 42degC heat, kicked the side stand out and sat the bike down on the stand. I got off, took off my helmet and as I placed it on the pillion seat the damned bike just slowly moved forward and fell on its side. Didn't extend the side stand fully. The engine bars and panniers held the bike up at around 40 degrees. Couldn't get it back up by myself. I was too tired from riding in that stinking heat so I woke up a trucker who was in the road-side carpark and got him to help me pick it up. Same principle - I grabbed the handlebars and pulled them in to the tank and he grabbed the handle that swings out from under the seat. If it was in gear it would have been easier. Actually, if the damned thing WAS in gear it would not have happened at all, as the motor cuts out when the side stand is down and the motor is running (just like my RSV does.) That's my golden rule now - pull up in gear, side stand down to cut the motor, clutch out and let the bike rest on the gearbox before I land it. (Oh yeah - turn off the ignition!)
  2. I had hair like I have hair like that --> now. I used to play guitar like that once. I don't play guitar any more. :rotf:
  3. I put a set of Samson pipes on my 04 a couple of weeks ago. The exhaust gasket collar on the left side just came out with the original muffler. The other one stuck hard and fast to the pipe and I had to slip a fine blade between them to remove the gasket. It distorted it a bit, and I don't think I'll be able to re-use it if I should ever think of re-installing the originals. Probably won't. The sound of the bike now is bl00dy awesome.
  4. Surely there is a consumers affairs advocate within your State authority who will jump on this rogue trader for you. That's totally illegal down my way, offenders cop HEAVY fines - and sometimes de-registration of their businesses.
  5. Damn - I can't believe the wages some people are earning on t'other side of the globe. Here in Oz, a 16 year old serving Big Macs and fries at Macca's would be earning a minimum of $12 and hour. And that's slave wages. A good labourer here is good for $25 an hour. Me - I work 2.5 days a week for a government agency and get paid $38 an hour. Rest of the time I earn $100 an hour for 'professional services' - tax free.
  6. So whilst you're all snowed in and not riding, gues what we're doing Down Under? You got it - more thunder! Time to ride!! Yee haaaaaa!
  7. Hello! Where the hell did you drag that crap up? A number of well known sayings comes to mind here, not the least being: "Clean up your own back yard first", "You gotta walk the walk before you can talk the talk" and "Check your facts - don't rely on bullsh1t!"
  8. Tipping is an obviously very American thing. Doesn't rate a mention in Australia. Not needed, not practised and so pretentious.
  9. It's called the Yellow Peril! China will take over the world without firing a shot in anger.
  10. Why?
  11. Ah - the home of the brave and the land of the free. I feel sorry for all you people who HAVE to carry guns, to guard against the rest of the people who ALSO have guns. If nobody had guns, then - - . Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home (Australia, that is!)
  12. What you coulda done was taken those 2 black bars out of the monitor, drilled a hole in each end, put one over the front and over the back of the closed laptop, put padlocks through the holes - - - that'll stop her doing that again.:rotf:

  14. Thanks Rick. That's what I love about this forum. The advice - and plenty of it. I'm in the throes of ordering a Works unit from (the other) Rick. Cheers.
  15. Brad - my dealer is one of the longest standing and bigger Yamaha dealers in this state. He sells a lot of trail and ag bikes (including quads) and he has a guy in Sydney who he says can re-build ANY shockie - at a price. Reckons mine can be done for around the $600 mark, which makes it $300 cheaper than a newie - here in Oz. I can import a genuine for around the same money, or as I'm doing, outlaying a couple of extra $$$ and importing the Works unit from Rick. It's called economics and common-sense I suppose.
  16. Have had a few emails back and forward from Yamaha-Australia, and they've disowned me. Reckon because the bike is out of warranty it's my problem. I asked if there had been any other reports of shockie failure in Australia and they said they were not aware of any. That's a BIG deal, because there is only about 50 of them in the country. Different story to the ratio between machines and failing shockies in the rest of the world - especially North America. I'm about to order a Works unit from the States. Can land that here for around $200 less than Yamahahahaha wants for a genuine (and apparently defective) Yamaha unit in Oz. The Yammie dealer who inspected my bike made a strut to bolt in to replace the shock whilst it was out, and he gave that to me for when I put the new unit in. Very decent of him, considering he'll probably never see another one in his lifetime.
  17. Greetings all. Just found this from yesterday's news. Anybody know these folk? Thankfully they appear to be okay. A motorcycle ran off the road at the Interstate 40 eastbound off-ramp to U.S. 177 Friday afternoon, injuring both the driver and passenger. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the accident occurred about 3:23 p.m. Trooper Jason Richardson's reports show a 2000 Yamaha Venture driven by Loyd Sigle, 59, Oklahoma City, was eastbound on I-40 when he failed to negotiate the off-ramp and ran off the roadway to the right. He and his passenger, Vickie Sigle, 56, Oklahoma City, were ejected about five feet. Loyd Sigle was taken by Medi Flight helicopter ambulance to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he was admitted with internal trunk injuries. He remained hospitalized Saturday in critical condition. Vickie Sigle was transported by REACT EMS to Unity Health Center, where she was treated for a minor leg injury and released. Both were wearing safety helmets, the OHP said. Unsafe speed on a curve/turn was listed as the cause of the accident.
  18. Parking meters. Parking meters! Parking meters? None in my city. I win.
  19. Used to have PayPal once, but it's since lapsed. Must see if I can revive it and use it. Can somebody give me Russell's PayPal details please.
  20. He's easily fixed. Just slip around the back of his shop one night and throw the main switch on his power box. Can you imagine how much ice cream that would melt?:rotf: He's obviously gone from a status symbol to a phallic symbol!
  21. Black Owl, How can I contribute to the floral tribute - from Australia? Spear
  22. Check out this post for a 4 days record ride - and by an Aussie as well, the first on his 'new' RSV. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15971
  23. I have been monitoring this thread ever since it appeared. The number of members who have checked in has grown to 373. I know how we all feel - not being able to 'say' anything, whether it's through being too numb or just not being able to find the right words to say to anybody. I'm sad - damned sad and so frustrated that such a wonderful life has been cut short in its prime, and what is obviously a beautiful family has been deprived of such a wonderful member. I ride, my wife rides with me and we do nothing different to what this wounderful couple was doing - enjoying life and its rewards after giving so much to the world. May I, on behalf of the others who don't know what to say, let you know Gary that we ARE thinking of you. Permit me to be their proxy voice. We love you mate, and can only hope to share your loss and grief with you in an endeavour to lighten some of that load you are carrying. I can say no more. It's hard to see my monitor for the tears that are welling up in my eyes. God bless old son.
  24. I sent Rick an email at Buckeye last night, and there this morning in my 'in tray' was a very detailed reply. I asked for prices landed in Australia and he obliged. I can get the Works unit from him landed at my front door $AU200 cheaper than buying the genuine (dud) Yamaha her in Oz. Yay for free trade. I asked my dealer to re-install the shock and I will pick the bike up tomorrow and bring it home. I'm then going to pursue Yamaha-Australia with a vengeance once I get all the technical data that I can find on this site and elsewhere, to see if I can get some sort of warranty, subsidy or compensation. We'll see. The amount of money potentially involved will make it worthwhile methinks. I'll let you know how I go. Naturally my dealer wasn't happy when I told him what I can get the unit/s for (Works and Yammie original) - but stiff! It's my money and his business. If he wants a union, then he's gotta come to the party.
  25. My Yammie dealer rang Yamaha-Australia whilst I was in his store, and put it to them that my shock failed after 27,000kms and the bike was just 5 months out of warranty. They didn't want to know about it. They would have come to the party if I was the original owner and I bought it from him. How discriminatory is that? I can see this whole exercise is going to cost me around a grand - parts and labour. Expensive little oil leak, eh?
