    '88 VR starts quick, idles perfectly smooth, hot restarts are perfect, throttle response is quick. When fully warmed and parked on the centerstand in neutral, briefly holding throttle at 3500 RPM, engine exhaust crackles and pops. With a quick spinup from idle to 5000 RPM there are no issues, simply normal quick smooth engine response. When normal riding two up at any speed, there are no issues of the pop and crackle evidenced at the no-load 3500 RPM. Only time it crackles is under no-load conditions with the throttle held open. No crackling below 3000 RPM or above 4500 RPM. Plugs are clean, correct tan color. Is this an issue? IMHO this is not an issue, but would be if the crackling exhaust happened under normal riding conditions. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA

    It was 1956 and I was 9 and the news was all about the Suez Crisis, and my mother and I were on a train that rolled past a field that was being cleared of stumps with explosives going off right then, and I became frightened that the war was right outside the rail car. Impressed me for sure, and I still remember that there was indeed a shooting war that might seriously affect me. Now I know better, .......and I have guns. Then there was the Kennedy assassination while I was in class in high school. We watched the black and white tv coverage for a while in dismay, then we all went home early saddened by the events.     FWIW, I've started using my new LG 7.0 G4lte phablet that has built-in GPS, and installed a free app called "Nokia HERE" that has downloadable maps. It works very well away from any service areas. Got the idea from the link in Webbikeworld entitled "Using a Tablet as a Motorcycle GPS". -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA

    WOW!!!!! THAT'S AWESOME........ Back in the olden days (2$ Tuesdays at Crystal Mtn. WA) I was a kinda hot skier, but pale by comparison to this guy. I remember skiing thru the rocks and mud in spring like this guy.....rough on the equipment and you couldn't go down 'cause that would hurt..... besides you'd get dirty. Now I get my thrills from my 1gen MkII which is a lot cheaper than the $60 lift ticket nowdays. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA

    Doug, To remove the seal, I'd drill a small hole in the metal case and sink a small sheet metal screw in, then pull with pliers. On larger seals, 2 holes and screws work better. OR, one can just keep turning the screw in and the old seal will ride right out. To set the seal in the crankcase, give the seal a light coat of black RTV to the sides and slip it over the shift shaft and lightly tap it in place using a dowel and rubber mallet. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA

    I was at the Home Depot electrical dept. today and spotted these, and my first thought was they could be used as a replacement for the rubber straps that hold the side covers on the MkII Venture. It seems to be a small bungee cord with grommet, and about the perfect size for the application. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA

    $1.99/US Gallon here in Tacoma WA today.........at least in my part of town. Now I can fill my Samurai up for $20 versus $10 when I first got it!!!! I know it won't last long, but neither will saved gas in a drum. Today's fuel goes stale in 30 days....so no point in saving any. Keep that 'stale' concept in mind regarding your stored machines. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA

    Simply drill a hole in the frame and tap threads in it for a machine screw and mount an angled piece of metal that supports the hose end. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA

    Where practical in high current situations, I replace connectors with soldered joints. One such joint is the stator connectors. Back in the 'old' days, all joints were soldered, and connectors were developed to speed assembly at the factory. The connectors were never designed for lengthy service life............ and still are'nt -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA

" The courts are not free....they cost money to operate and are not totally funded by tax dollars..........that's why everyone pays something. In my area it costs $75 to go before a judge even for an obvious not guilty situation. Consider yourself lucky it didn't cost more.     Looks like a spark plug or two are not firing, causing engine vacuum to suck oil past the rings and blow out the exhaust. Or maybe stuck rings that could be loosened up with some SEAFOAM added to the fuel and into the crankcase oil.-Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
