It's a pretty easy job ... if you've done one, you can do another... just take your time. -
replacment clutch

You will now better once you get it apart. Look closely at the friction discs as they are what will wear out. Get the HD upgrade kit as it contains a new friction disc to compare with. If the other discs (the steel ones) are blued, you can clean them up with emery paper. Take care how you dissasemble things so it all goes back together the same way and pay particular attention to lining up the notches in the friction discs with the notches on the clutch hub and, as well, line up the dot on the pressure plate with the one on the hub when you put it all back together. There's lots of help here so don't hesitate to ask, even if it's a "dumb question" ... there's many of us who are qualified to give answers to those... LOL (there's no dumb questions, only dumb answers) -
I see you have one of them thar Hardleys ... quite frankly, I'd like to have one myself... preferably 2009 or newer Electra Ultra. yes, I am only "funnin" when I make such "harley bashing" comments .... life could be very boring without a little fun in it and folks who take offense to this funnin are just too danged serious ... "uptight" as we used to say..... but I know you're not

You can get a HD upgrade kit from skydoc_17 here on the site. If you're not a "wrencher", read the instuctions and talk to skydoc.... he will help you through the process and if that fails, heck, I've heard rumors that he'll even send his wife to assist! LOL http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=2905&title=second-genheavy-duty-clutch-spring26amp-3b-full-disc-upgrade-kit-21&cat=22 -
Geez ... in that many years, I've been through 3 wives... or better yet, I been dumped twice and hopefully won't be again! Congrats!! ... stayng together that long takes a lotta effort and committment ... something that is rare nowadays.

Of course it's not a Harley engine... this is the NEW model and they've finally figgured out that a "metric" engine is BETTER!

Improvement???... what improvement??? Look at that springer front end .... seems to me they went backwards.... LOL .. oh, wait a minute .... oh yeah.. I see it now...heck, EVERYONE knows petrified wood is much stronger than STEEL! :witch_brew: (now you HD guys, don't go getting you nose outta joint... we're just funnin)

Isn't a cashier's cheque much the same as a certified cheque?? If the cheque is certified, that means the funds are there and held for that cheque. yes/no? btw, it take my payroll cheque to "clear" both banks appx 5 days.

ahhhhhh... so this might be something like a "slip clutch" .... such that you'd find on a snow machine or maybe even a powersaw...?? I underline that as I realize there is a difference .... but a similar principle none the less.
-
I've heard that a lot over the years ... it generally uttered by folks who a) think they know it all and b) have blinders on and live in a very safe, structured, and unchanging world and have no balls to try anything new or feel that anything could be different or better because regardless of how they do things, the end result justifys their archaic means. They have no idea of what "thinking outside the box" means. (present company excluded of course .... end of rant)

This thread is a very interesting read and very informative but Lutz, this statement you make has really diminished my confidence in you bro ...
-
Lutz, can you elaborate on this plz? What is it ... how does it work, etc, etc and who makes them?
-
Oh go ahead .... why leave us wondering....

There seems to be a very small "friction zone" on these clutches ... that doesn't bother me much. It does surprise me tho that yours, being stock, acts like mine after the upgrade whereas mine didn't before. Makes one wonder ... Too bad there isn't some sort of adjuster so a person could adjust the lever for what best suits them .... seems to me a mechanical clutch allows this (in a roundabout fashion).

Just curious... does your buddy weigh the same? What about a different sized rear tire? (just throwing it out there as I have nothing else to suggest)

It's pretty apparent that the position of the clutch lever when the clutch engages/disengages is a personal thing and has NOTHING to do with the actual workings of the clutch and the effectiveness of the upgrade kit. In my case, I have relatively small hands (albeit my grip strength for my size would surprise many) and "working" the clutch with my fingertips just didn't make me feel "safe" .... like I wasn't totally in control. I found I had to "stretch" my hand in order to get a proper grip on the lever as if I didn't, it felt as though it would be too easy for the lever to slip off the end of my fingers .... which could prove dangerous.

you aren't? ... well that changes my whole impression of you Don ...

30 days is my recommendation ... for what it's worth If you add it as a "task" of things to do after an upgrade.....
