I find a difference between the collective and the individual experience of war. War, when viewed in the collective sense of a nation's or an alliance's intent, purpose, and achievements, looks quite different from the individial's experience on the battlefield. The intent in entering upon a war can be noble, The determination and purpose with which it is prosecuted can be noble. It's achievments, the effect it has on the people whose lives are eventually improved can be noble. The day to day business of executing these missions remains a horror in which some die, some are damaged permanently (whether mentally or physically), and all who participate (and their families) are affected. I thank God daily that good and true men and women can still be found to enter that horror on our behalf, whether they be Canadian, American or of other of the nations involved. Below is something I wrote when a friend was killed shortly after the start of my first tour in Afghanistan. He was Canada's 45th fatality and the first of that tour. A Soldier Went Home Today Forty-four friends stand waiting At the gate to honour’s hall Some smile, some are stern Faces and names etched in stone Lined respectfully along the wall And behind them thousands more From earlier answered call History’s missions, conflicts, wars Soldiers who did what duty demanded Until it was their turn to fall Our country asks and we deliver Willing and proud to give our all Forty-fifth for Canada The first for us His sacrifice seems not small For those of us who are new To war’s great cost, its pall History, tales of glory Do not tell the simple story The loss of one is a loss for all A Soldier Went Home Today We will remember him.

Taking that idea one step further, you could offer the job to a high school shop class or trades college as a project. You pay for materials, provide mentoring. Use specialized sub-contractors where regulatory requires it. You get a garage, the school gets a project, the kids get a grade.....

Can't answer your question from personal experience, but if you go to the yamaha-motor.com site and get into the parts listings a simple comparison of part numbers should tell the tale... --- I am here: [ame=http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=47.711333,-52.721613]Google Maps[/ame] -

Went on an all day poker run a few weeks back. About 400 total km, lots of BS at the stops. At the lunch stop one of the guys spent 20 minutes telling me about his new bike. Boiling 20 minutes of BS down to the facts, he'd spent 33k for the machine out the door and had added 8k in upgrades. Told him I'd spent 14k + 1.5k in upgrades for mine (parked right next to his), and that we'd both ridden the same route that day. He told me he'd never buy a used bike. Told him mine had 1km on the clock when I rolled it out of the dealer. Told me he'd put almost 3000 km on it and it had only been back in the shop twice. Told him I had over 6000 on, and only an oil change and rear hub lube. He stopped talking to me and went to sit with the other harley riders. Most guys and gals are just guys and gals. Nobody I know really cares what someone rides. The odd Harley Snob you run into does seem to give the rest of the Harley riders a bad name. I don't look at the ride when I'm headed out, I look at the rider. Only interested in whether someone is safe to ride with. The rest looks after itself.

Slightly off the question: iPhone running Co-Pilot live linked via bluetooth to Midland BT2 headset. Midland paired headsets provide rider-passenger or bike to bike intercom iPhone provides music via itunes, simultaneous GPS turn by turn direction with spoken street names, voice-control phone Already had the iPhone and the headsets so for $29 im done.

hmmmm I bought the RSTD because it's big, heavy, powerful, stable, and reliable enough to carry me and my back-seater at a responsible, safe speed whereever I want to go. Not worried about being fastest, slowest, best accelleration, most agile. Want to get to the destination safely, comfortably, happily, and enjoy the journey. If I wanted to be fastest I'd have bought something completely different, but I'm getting a little too old and round to be able to comfortably lie down along my gas tank. You want to go fast, fine. Go fast. I'll happily watch your taillight disappear in the distance while I enjoy my ride. I do wonder sometimes, if speed is your issue why did you buy a honking big touring bike?

So bug size matters?

I'm figuring on 450,000 km, maybe more with this machine. That'll make me 80+. If i can still ride safely I'll ride on.

I found the stock seat uncomfortable for longer rides. Replaced with the Ultimate Seat. There was some extra play in the throttle grip. Fixed at the first service. Personal preference - I'd rather have a dipstick than a sight-glass. (When I mentioned that to my beloved wife, she told me the dipstick was doing the driving) Other than that I have had exactly 0 mechanical or service issues. No whine to speak of in the clutch. Occasional squeaky front brakes, but a couple of firm stops usually clears that up. Overall EXTREMELY pleased with it. I anticipate averaging about 15k km/yr so at age 51 I expect it to easily outlast the remainder of my riding career. Unless my needs change radically it'll be my last ride.

Every brand of bike has it's recognized (and discussed to death) faults. For example, my RSTD .... no, it's actually perfect.
