Does this apply to MC tires? I've never been offered this service when buying tires for a bike, although the local auto tire dealer offers it. Is it something that must be asked for?

Geez, sorry I mentioned this and got you all lathered up. It won't share these kinds of things here again. Now, can I get the 40 lashes reduced to 25 or so since I've apologized?

Where did I say they should give it away? I'm willing to pay a fair price, I just don't consider the price I was charged to be a fair price. I wouldn't have flinched a bit at paying $200 for the tire even though that would be at least $30 higher than it could be bought for elsewhere. Neither would I have openly complained about the $40 fee for a 15 minute job, if the tire was priced fairly. Add them both together and I still feel that I got ripped. You may not agree, but your disagreement will not change how I feel. I only wish that I was in business and had you for a customer so I could take advantage of your obvious generosity.

Well, you forgot a cost there Carl. There is the huge cost of the 6 salespeople walking around with their hands in their (and my) pockets the entire time I was in the store. The 2 service managers sitting on their stools behind the counter have to be paid too. Also the 4 "service-kiddies" (had to be all of 19 years old) leaning against the wall behind the counter while my tire was being changed (45 minutes). Yep, gotta pay them all. I wish I had taken a picture of the sign on the wall behind the counter on which their standard fees were listed. Enough to turn your stomach. And, this dealership evidently couldn't find any cute gals in Clarksville.

Please tell me the name of any tire manfacturer that will warranty a tire with a big hunk of metal in it that got there by the driver running over it. I never heard of such a thing.

While in Tennessee on Friday, I ran over a piece of steel and ruined a rather low-mileage E3 on the rar of my GL1800 Wing. I was about 30 miles from the beginning of civilization with only one realistic option for obtaining a new tire, that being Mid-$outh Motoplex in Clark$ville, Tenne$$ee. I'll leave out all the details, but after finally getting the rear wheel off and delivered to the shop, I was then gouged mercilessly IMO. My tire size is 180/60R16 and a new E3 from http://www.jakewilson.com goes for 164.99.....obviously not an option for me in my situation since I had to have the tire immediately so I could continue my trip. Here's what the dealership charged me: Tire: $247.50 Labor: $39.50 Valve stem: $16.98 Tax: $29 and change Total, $333 thank you very much for your business sir! Now, I realize that a dealership needs to make a profit, but that is one heckuva markup percentage. I'm sure they buy their tires at least as cheaply as I can get them online....so they are marking them up by almost half. Nice. Oh, and it's a good thing I took it in already off the bike. They charge $118.50 if on the bike, plus an additional "clean up fee as appropriate". I initially thought that I was fortunate that they "got me right in and got it done for me" since I was just traveling through.....until I read the sign that said "Tires mounted and balanced while you wait". So I received no special treatment after all. This shop sells Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Polaris/Victory. Large dealership, expensive building. I now have paid for a small piece of it. BEWARE. Joe

Just got back today from 8 straight days in the saddle on my new-to-me 2003. Half way through the week I came up with a name for her. I'm calling her "Red Missy". That's short for Redheaded Mistress, which is how I view her now. Wow, what a bike! All of the intricacies slowly became apparent throughout the week and I have fallen in love with this machine! Now for the Techie stuff so this will qualify to be posted here: While in Tennessee yesterday I picked up a piece of steel in my rear tire and had to get a new one. This happened 35 miles away from the nearest dealer where I could get a tire. I had to remove the rear wheel and take it to the dealer. I had seen a video of how to do it by laying the bike over on its side, and this was the only real option available to me on the side of the road. Let me tell you, it WORKS beautifully. It is such an easy way to remove and replace the wheel that I will never do it any other way. Highly recommended.

Hey Bill, just put it on my "tab" and you can pay the next time I'm down your way. Who knows, I may get a tickle some day and take a nice little ride and end up in St Charles! It'll be more fun eating it with you there. Joe

That's a coinky-dink. I just got back today from an 8 day trip to the Ozarks. Stayed in Mtn View for 4 nights at the Best Western. Make sure you get over to the Ozark National Forest and ride 123. Almost an unknown road but in my top 5 of roads I've ever ridden. I prefer it to the infamous Dragon by far. Have fun! Joe

Hey guys, we just got home about 45 minutes ago. Unpacking, washing clothes, the usual post trip stuff. What a great week in Arkansas, and in Ky/Tenn too! Just told the gang today that I wouldn't change the whole tire incident even if I could (well, maybe I'd put the money back in my account).....it was a part of the trip that was special in its own way. Those extra hours spent with Bill and Mike allowed us all to get to know each other better and build memories together. Good stuff. Glad you two were so willing to give us almost your entire day to see that we were safely on our way. Bill, I hope your Venture didn't tell any tales on me while you were riding her home. It's not true....I did NOT go 85 mph. And I wasn't doing 65 around those 35 mph curves either. Don't believe a word of it, its not true I tell ya! Some pictures will be coming....even a very special one that will have a "contest" connected to it. Stay tuned..... Joe

My time as a Venture owner, that is. Today the 99 that I had listed in the classifieds was picked up by its new owner, a real nice guy named Doug from the Joliet, IL area. I was sad to see her go, but I know that Doug will give her a good home. Doug said that he has been here on the site a couple times checking things out, and was very impressed. I encouraged him to join, I think he'd fit right in. He seemed to be the kind of guy I'd enjoy riding with. BTW, his 10 year old daughter was just as excited as he was. She's a cutie and said she can't wait to go riding with Dad. Doug, if you're lurking let us know. Joe

Works seems to be about the only reasonable option. I think they are actually a bit less than the stock shock.

Puuuurrrty, Don. Hey I saw a post from you on the GL1800riders forum. That place is a WEALTH of info. Unbelievable! Joe

Nope. I can do it without looking at them. Besides, I'm not saying that he HAS to have the clock showing. Just telling him how to do it. And, this can be done while you are not in motion. Once set that way, it stays that way until it is changed. -

What time is it??? Press the Select and Reset buttons at the same time (for the odometer) and a digital clock magically appears in place of the odometer. Who needs a tach? Keep the throttle twisted until you feel the rev limiter, then shift. What is a tach going to do for you besides giving you the pleasure of watching the needle move? Just one more thing to pull your attention away from what is happening in front of you. I have a tach on my wing, only look at it when I have nothing else to do. Don't like the heel/toe shifter? Do what I and many others do...just use the toe part and it works just like what you are used to. I agree about the centerstand. Really missed that on my RSV. Adjustable grips? A set of risers will cure that. -
Well, you can run a chromed Kanooter valve if you want to. But that is just a cheap knock-off of the original European Kneuter valve. Much higher quality, and you get the embossed KV emblem to boot!

I just ran across the instructions for refilling the preload pump yesterday. I'm going to do that this week and see what happens. In running the test to see if it needs it, my pump did not come under load until it hit 9....meaning that I'm getting less than 2/3 of the preload ability that it should have. I'll probably start tearing into it this evening. Joe

I'm convinced that you don't need "jinxing" in order to find rain! You seem to be a natural at it! Sounds like you're having a lot of fun though. I've seen your Facebook pictures, waiting for more! Joe

Yes, it does hold the pressure where I set it for both memory settings. It just seems that no matter where it is set, the ride on the passenger seat is very harsh according to Donna. We have had an 82 Aspy, a 99 Aspy, an RSV, and now the 03. She said it is the worst riding by far. When we hit one of those spots on the road where they have trenched across for an electric or other line, then refilled and paved it (you know, the ones that always settle a couple inches lower than the rest of the road) the jarring will actually hurt. Last week I hit one at 55mph, preload at 20. She grimaced and howled, next day her lower back was stiff and sore. While I was prepared for a more sport-tuned suspension, this just doesn't seem right. Not for a Wing. Joe

Doesn't surprise me all that much.....I don't have a service manual yet. What else has to come off to change that rear shock? I want to change mine before we leave for Arkansas on the 19th.
