We got around 180 mi in today, on the Virago. I dressed too warm expecting cold in the mountains but it was not too bad. I missed the Venture but a beautiful way to start the new year. Rod

What they said and get new strings. Shorter sessions more often helped me get past the finger pain. I use slinky (electric) strings on my acoustics. The strings on new guitars are crap, change them and have a good shop set them up the first time. I bought myself a new to me Ibanez acoustic/electric for Christmas.Have fun Rod

I have an intermittent miss that is driving me crazy. The symptoms: Driving down the road one day suddenly the speedo needle gos erratic and the bike misses like I hit the rev-limiter and the radio get louder. Speedo quit working runs fine. Speedo get erratic and bike misses for a second then fine. Happens more after it is warmed up than cold. I split the faring and checked all the connections. When I jacked up the back wheel an ran it (it only happens when running in gear) wiggling the wires to the display caused the speedo to go erratic so I unplug and test ride, no change same problem. New display is $800. Is the computer in the display? The computer for the speed sensor is my best guess right now. Any ideas welcome. Rose is pissed, her bike has been down and she is not nice when she does not get her bike rides. Rod

We spend 10 + hours on the range parking lot on training days. Silver deer had very good advice. Good soles or boots that fit right will last. I went an other route though. I get the lightweight hiking boots from big 5 and replace them every year or so. They are light weight and the soles are soft, I buy for fit not style and get a good insole. Take good care of your feet. Rod

Outstanding!!! I always ride the last day and the first day of the year. This year I am leaving the 67 cafe in Lakeside at 10 am both days. Destination ... who cares. Rod

I made biscuits and sausage gravy and scrambled eggs with cheese and chives for brunch for the kids and grandkids; plus the cookies and candy mandatory for the holidays. I got to play with the grandkids and got an electronic picture key chain. Had friends over for dinner and my Chargers kicked butt. Rod

A lot of old knifes started life as worn out files. Common high quality steel. Al Buck (Buck Knifes) started that way. Leaf springs are also good steel and make good blanks. Good luck on the project it looks like a fun one. Nice work BTW Rod

We have both for training bikes. I like the Star/Virago better with a change of handlebars (the stockers are "buck horns"). I was talking to a fellow coach yesterday and we agree that the Rebel has you spread your legs wider with your feet down due to the side covers. A small shield and bags are not a problem. Around here there are lots of leftovers at the dealers. Here is another option http://www.hyosungmotorsusa.com/product/introduction.asp?Cat=Cruise&model=GV250 they use these on base for training and have been OK.

What is that white stuff all over every thing??? The sky has turned dark grey here and things have gotten wet over last couple of weeks... I think his was called rain. I wish it would go away it gets the bike durty when I ride and it is cold and makes the roads slippery. Confused Rod in sunny or damp San Diego

I was at a local HD dealer and saw they had the Kuryakyn l.e.d. volt meters for about $25. I found them here. http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/IMID/872 Rod

A good frind is rider #1 in this news story. He is in pain but OK. The news story http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33965174/ His email: Welp, it happened. My beautiful sparkling Intruder has some scratches. More than scratches, actually. Here's my tale of woe. Enjoyed a nice lunch ride up to Julian with daughter Dawn, and had stopped for gas just before getting home like I always do. Pulled up about 6 feet behind a fueling Honda with the rear half of my bike angled to the right of the car that was fueling from the left. I'm still on the bike, side-stand down, engine turned off. The lady finished and got into her car, fiddled for a few seconds, then started her car. There was no one in front of her. She then started moving backwards and I started yelling while pulling in the clutch and backing away. When I yelled, she floored it. I was spun around counter-clockwise 180 degrees, bike and I hit the ground behind and to the right side of her car, and we were both dragged by her car for about 12 feet then I and bike broke free of her car which was still accelerating backwards. She then traversed another 30 feet backwards and, coincidentally, hit another motorcyclist who was waiting to get air in his tires. He saw it all happening, and tried to jump out of the way but she was moving too fast (I didn't see any of this as I was still on the ground). She hit him, flinging him backward and down an embankment followed by the car after it jumped a curb. The car's backward motion was then stopped by a building, and the other guy was pinned beneath the back of the car. It took me about a minute to try to stand up. My left leg hurt above the knee where it had been pinned under the motorcycle, but I was able to stand. Several people had rushed to the car and were trying to lift the back end, and push the car forward while the woman inside was trying to climb the curb with the front wheel drive. It wasn't working. At this point I was unaware that anyone else had been involved and yelled to wait for the tow truck. I then called 911 asking for a police car. Turned out there were several witnesses, and several people called 911 at about the same time (which explains why my call went to a recording telling me my call is very important, please stand by). About 5 minutes into all this, 6 police cars, two fire trucks and two paramedic trucks showed up. I decided to doff my helmet and motorcycle jacket at which point I discovered blood dripping off my elbow through the long-sleeve shirt I was wearing. I also felt down where my leg was hurting, and there was a raised bump about the size of two fists in area. A female paramedic checked me out and said I needed to go to the emergency room (the elbow wasn't hurting - yet). Here's where I doffed the chaps because hospitals take great delight in cutting motorcycle clothing off. By now we're about 15 minutes into everything and my left leg is starting to hurt and feel weak. My wife showed up and I was then bundled off to the emergency room. Daughter Dawn has just found a news link to the incident. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33965174/ Daughter Laura taped several news broadcasts last night (Sunday) and two of them covered it. I'll watch them later. Bottom line: My leg is still weak and hurts when I try to use it. I got several stitches in the elbow, and that's REALLY stinging now. New bruises are showing up. My pristine motorcycle with 42K miles, no scratches and not even any swirl marks in the painted surfaces, is no longer pristine. They say the bike's not as bad as I thought. We'll see. Regards, Gary Watch out for the cagers Rod

When we had insurance at the end of Rose's stay at the hospital we waited and waited to go home. At shift change a new Dr. would walk in, look at her chart, walk out and then the nurse would let us leave. Can we guess why? Rod

I knew that Grandpa rode motorcycles. What he kept secret was he raced and hill climbed competitively. They did Holister every year till they moved south. Rod
