  1. Lynn, thanks for the info. I may have been shifting too soon. Just for grins this afternoon, I ran it up against the rev limiter in 1st and 2nd. Cuts off @ 41 in 1st and 66 in 2nd. I ran out of road to go any faster, but am gonna try 3rd an 4th on I-20 this week end. We know it is limited to 112 in 5th. Normally I just get her rolling before shifting to 2nd and in a residential area she will run happily along at 35 in 5th as long as I don't add much throttle. On the highway it will accelerate smoothly from 50 to 70 in 5th. (not at WOT, though, that takes 4th) As it eases through 60-65 I start to get a vibration that sounds and feel like one cylinder takes the bulk of the work. It begins to dimish somewhat around 80. That is as fast as I have run it so far. (too many highway patrol here around the capitol city.) I'm about finished with my second tank with 1/2 a bottle of SeaFoam per tank. Can't say I can tell much difference. I don't know this bikes pedigree, so I'm gonna have a reputible independent shop balance the carbs Monday. I don't know if that will help. If autoxone has the spark plugs, I may change them. The bike starts, from cold, instantly with no choke. Even when the overnight temp got to 35F. I cannot put the Barons on this week end :depressed:as our local stealership does not stock the bottom bolts. They also cannot tell me the size/pitch/length:headache:, so I will probably pull one of the floorboard bracket bolts and match it up (grade 8) from the parts dept. where I work. Again, thanks for the info. Walter
  2. I have had to put on a jacket to ride to work every morning this week. Short sleeves going home...
  3. For a '98 RSTC, what is the firing order? Does each cylinder fire individually, or do two of them fire at the same time? When I lug this thing, It sounds to me like a 2 cylinder rather than a 4. At 65 and above it has a sound that to me sounds and feels(vibrates) like a V-twin. I've never had one of these V4s before so I don't know what to expect.:confused24::confused24:
  4. The heavy equipment manufacturer we represent has a separate warranty for batteries as well, but the machine warranty will pay labor to change a bad battery even though the customer might have to pay for the battery. I wonder if Yamaha's is that way. If so just for grins, I think I'd have made them change it.
  5. There's nothing ahead of the floorboards. There is a blank threaded hole slightly ahead and below the floorboard mounting bracket.
  6. My new Baron bars just arrived today. I'm looking at the instructions and it says to take the acorn nuts off and use the bolts they came off of. Installing them will be a project for this weekend, so I have not yet removed anything. My concern is that once I put the bars on, there will be very few threads showing for the acorn nuts to "grab" on to. Anyway I'll have to visit my local stealership :bawling:as the socket head bolts for the bottom mounts are not there. Walter
  7. I'm thinking bad battery too. Didja try jump starting it? I got a Coleman jump start box I can bring over after work today if you wanna try it. Walter
  8. The windshield on my bike came with a cloudy coating that if it was in a bathtub I would call it calcium build up. It is spotty. I think the detailer, before I bought it must have used something that effected every plastic part on the bike, even the clear part for the tag light. It will easily scrape off with a fingernail, but that would take a while! I have tried #2 grit polish and that with LOTS of work will eventually take it off of small areas. I even tried regular rubbing compound followed by the #2 polish on the little wind deflectors below the windshield and that eventually got it off but they are still a little cloudy, although they look much better. Some one mentioned trying vinegar, which I did, no luck. Has anyone see this before and short of replacing the windshield, how do you clean it off. Cannot ride at night, 'cause oncomming lights make it opaic. Walter
  9. Would that be Jax, Mississippi? Coffepot's on here too!!!
  10. Got mine two weeks ago. Up until it rained yesterday I have not missed putting some miles on it each day. The longest continuous trip was bringing her home, from Biloxi, 180 miles.
  11. Will turn 62 in May. Have my triked Burgman up for sale and just bought a 1998 RSTC. Gonna keep on keeping on...
  12. Had a friend, now deceased, who was disabled from a Vietnam (tunnel rat) back injury. He had a handicap decal on his 1988 Vulcan 1500. Greg said he got plenty of nasty looks and comments when he parked in the handicap spaces. Never judge a book by it's cover! Walter
  13. Jim, Glad all turned out well!!! I too avoid doctors:Im not listening to, but 8 years ago I was in for an upper respiritory infection when I asked the doctor, as I was leaving, "by the way doc, what do you think of this knot (next to my right nipple)?". I had noticed it several months before and didn't think much of it. The doctor visit was on Thursday and the next Tuesday I was in surgery! BREAST CANCER!!! Well, the Lord was looking out for me :bowdown:as he always had, as there was no connective tissue or lymph node involvement. Thankfully I did not need radiation or chemo, other than a 5 year treatment with tamoxifin. So Guys WE CAN get breast cancer, so along with the "glove snap" proceedure, the PSA test and a colonoscopy, look for "lumps" TOO!!! Walter
  14. AND that's because you are out of blinker FLUID...
  15. Well at least the Yamaha dealer in central Mississippi knows my RSTC has 4 carbs. They told me "Since it has 4 carbs on it it is quite a complicated job to sync them." But they seemed more than willing to tackle the job for $255.00. I thanked them and left. While the young man was figuring the price, on of the other folks in the service office made the comment that the mechanic had done his first sync last week so mine (the second one he had ever done) should not be a problem. $255.00, I don't think so!!!! Walter In Richland, MS
  16. Raceman, Thanks I stand corrected! I wonder what problems I would have if I switched my newly aquired 1998 RSTC with 23,000 miles on it to the Rotella Synthetic? Walter In Mississippi
  17. From having been a warranty manager for a heavy equipment dealer, I can say that not using THAT manufacturer's oil would not out right void the warranty. However, if the cause of failure of compartment (i.e. engine, transmission, etc.) could be proved to be caused by someone else's oil then that particular failure would not be paid as warranty. BTW I noticed on another thread someone mentioned using Rotella and called it synthetic. I don't think it is...
  18. What is the consensus opinion of changing a 23,000 mile 1998 Tour Classic II from "SF" 10W-40 to Mobile 1? What weight Mobile 1? I just bought the bike so I've never ridden a V4. I hear carb sync being mentioned. I guess if it sounds and feels like one cylinder (above 65 MPH) is working harder than the rest, I need to Sync the carbs, huh? Walter
  19. Being new to this I hadn't thought about patches and pumps. If my tour Classic has a cigarette plug I cannot find it, but when I get an electrical pump, I'll be putting alligator clips on it to hook directly to the battery then I won't have to worry about fuses, except the on in the pump. Walter:thumbsup2:
  20. From what I see here, I understand why the owner's manual says only use Dunlops on the 1998 Tour Classic. I guess I need to replace the new front Bridgestone that came on the bike when I bought it this week. Walter
  21. I just picked up my Royal Star TC this week. This is the first "big" bike for me. I have been on a Burgman for the last three years. Well the TC has reminded me twice this week just how heavy she is! The first time 2 minutes into the first ride of the day I pulled up to an up hill stop sigh with a right turn. I started out fine but just as I let the clutch out completely, I got the heart stopping "lurch" and she quit. With no where to put my right foot I managed a sharp right down hill turn into a neighbor's yard. Didn't go down and didn't get stuck and made it to their driveway and back onto the street. Whew!!!!!!!!! Then next day starting out of the barber shop parking lot I had to stop for traffic. Put my left foot down on some gravel. Thank goodness it only slid a few inches, but sure got my ATTENTION!!!
