  1. We were there in September. We did the Valley of Fire, if you get a chance it is worth it. We spent a couple of nights in Paige. Did the north rim of the Grand Canyon and Princess point, Bryce and Zion. We also did a 15 mile river rafting trip down Glen Canyou. Monument valley is worth a visit.
  2. If any of you are on the scene of a car fire stay well away, after doing what you can to help. There are a lot of highly toxic fumes that come off a car fire and many items on the car which can explode with considerable force.
  3. Silver T .........Did you ever work for the B.C. Ferrys? That is exactly their attitude.

    Veterans Day

I don't know how many of you are aware of this but in Canada we have our own Veterans Day. We call it Remembrance Day. We have parades and ceremonies and on the 11 hour of the 11 day of the eleventh month we observe 2 minutes of silence nation wide in honor of the veterans and those who died. This was written by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD. He wrote it in the space of 5 minutes on the battlefield at Ypres in 1915. Every Canadian schoolchild is familiar with it. In Flanders Fields During the ceremonies we had the parade turn towards Korea and salute the Allied Veterans cemetary there. 22 countries took part in the Korean war and to me a Veteran is a Veteran In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses row on row, that mark our place; and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing, fly scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: to you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields. Each year the Legion sells (by donation) poppies to raise funds for veterans and their families. This year I was to make a speech. Command sent me a 7 page one. I tore it up and wrote my own. Remembrance Day 2007 On this day we remember those who fought with valor and honor to preserve the freedoms which we have today. Sacrifices were made, some sacrificed their futures, some their health and some their very lives. Those who did return, returned, through their efforts, to a free country. We must never forget the sacrifices made and ever ensure that they were not made in vain. We must remember them. We must also remember the bloodshed and waste of war. By keeping those memories alive we remain eternally thankful to those who served and eternally vigilant and hopeful that our children and our children's children will not have to face the same horrors. It has been said that those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. Let us hope that we have learned we must be prepared to stop evil before it can engulf the entire world in another war such as we have had in the past. Let us do all we can to promote peace and understanding among nations and let us never forget the sacrifices made in the past for our future. K Butler President BR 92 Royal Canadian Legion. I hope you will forgive me for posting this here but it is how I feel.
  5. Check with the Harley riders. I believe they do it all the time. Don't forget to mark out the parking area for the cruiser, and one for the sport bike and another one for the off roader.
  6. Yeah, sometimes the bartender puts too much ice in my drink and I have to fish some out.
  7. When I say Americanized I mean American style tipping as opposed to European style where the tip is automaticaly included in the bill.
  8. In England ,outside of London which has been "Americanized", Tiping (or trying to) is practicaly an insult. You will get the money given back to you.
  9. I tip for service. For good service 15 to 20%. For lousy or no service I make my point with 2 cents. If the server is realy good and makes the experience enjoyable I also put in a good word for them with the cashier or or anyone who looks to be in charge.
  10. Being able to do what I want when I want, so long as SWMBO doesn't catch up to me.
  11. I was recently on a tour through Utah and Nevada. The tour guide was from Utah, two of us from Canada (B.C.), one from Australia, one from Russia and two from Germany. Naturally the subject of accents came up. The guide asked the german girl what the difference was between his accent and mine. She said Americans speak much faster than Canadians (guess she has never been to Taranna..Toronto). She said "Canadians knit a sentance togeather, Americans gather up the wool and throw it at you."
  12. I put nearly a full can in my 02 venture. Ran poorly after. I pulled the plugs and found they had some residue on them. I cleaned them and put them back in and it ran fine.
  13. Propane has a higher octane than gas so if you tune for just propane you can get good mileage and power. There are no additives to gum things up so engines, oil, oil filters, spark plugs etc all last longer. The mistake people made was trying to set up the engine to run on both propane and gas. It did not run well on either because it was always out of tune. Now they have the electronics to reset the engine automatically. My older son has my old truck ('78 ford 150 4x4) it has been on propane since day one and is now well over 300,000 miles and still going strong with very little maintenance. My younger son just got his truck converted to dual fuel which should work well with the new electronics. Propane here went up to gas prices a few years ago and all the truckers and taxi fleets that were using it converted back to gas. The price of propane went right back to half the price of gas within a month.
  14. Avon Venom's will make the bike feel lighter and improve handling.
  15. I am thinking of switching my truck to propane. My son has my old one and it has served us well. At half the price of gas it is worth it since I intend to keep the truck for years. Watch what is hapening in Alberta. The government there is trying to take a bigger royalty on the oil. Some companies are threatening to shut down production. Look for prices to jump soon.
  16. Here on Saltspring the prices are astronomical. Part of the reason is that it is an island so space is limited but the main reason is people from down south or back east buying properties and driving prices up. I know of some who have paid 1 to 5 million for a place simply to tear it down and build for 15 to 20 million. I built my place for $200,000.00 12 years ago and it is getting close to a million in value now. $ 250,000.00 will get you a one bedroom mobile home in the bush, if you can find one. People are getting hit hard by taxes. Mine have gone from $50.00/yr to $ 4000,00/yr and anyone on fixed or low income is moving off island. This leaves businesses with no employees. Many of these multi million dollar homes are only used for 2-3 weeks in the summer. Almost time to sell out and move to Vancouver Island.
  17. On my 02 venture it is the same except that the low fuel light comes on after you have run out and switched to reserve, then it stays on for about 5 min after you have fuled up and are on the road again.
  18. Not big but still scary. On a 140 foot ferry I was working on we had an open car deck. One day we had the decks awash with water up to the rocker panels of the cars. We had the wind dead behind us when we tried to dock. Wave and wind slued us and we missed the dock. We managed to stop before the beach but it took a full half hour with engines at full power to make it one ship length out so we could try again. We tied up and had to time getting the cars off to match the wave crests. I went up to the parking lot and told the people lined up that the next sailing was cancelled. Every one of them said " Oh thank God ". The next morning I returned to work and had to clear the rocks that had been lifted of the sea bottom and deposited on the car deck. On another open deck ferry we had a wave come over the bow and smash in the windshields of the cars at the front. And this is in suposedly sheltered waters.
  19. Both my sons got bikes as soon as they got out on their own ( out of moms reach ).
  20. Last week I was going up the highway, bear in mind this is a B.C. highway, you are either going around a corner, up or down a hill or all three combined. I looked at the woman in the mini van in the next lane. She was talking on her cell phone while eating a hamburger at 110 kph. Both hands were full and she was totaly distracted. I booted it out of there.
  21. Now you know why I don't ride a first gen....I just don't have the clothes.
  22. Now that does look like fun! One January I was at the helm of a 450ft ferry when we came out of Active Pass. The first wave hit us, went over the bridge and froze solid on all the windows. We had to cross the gulf on radar. When we got to the other side a deckhand was sent out to chip a hole in the ice so we could see to dock the ship. We made it with the Capt, the mate and myself all trying to peer through a 1 ft wide hole in the ice. That was a bad winter.
  23. The V max is also a low volume bike but the publicity is worth keeping it going and developing it. When the new one comes out look for a lot of attention ( free) from magazines. It would not take much to adapt the engine to the Venture....they did it once before. If they do then they will be returning to what made the 1st gen so great.
  24. I agree with Condor, only make it more than a few letters. Also let them know their anti bike policies are now being posted on the web. A bunch of letters from prospective tourists saying they are now changing their plans to avoid the town would catch their interests. Let them know you are on family vacation in your cars or campers. Keep the letters coming for a few months.
  25. They are following the corporate model in trying to avoid any blame for anything. They blame one student for copying then the other for not hiding the text. This leaves them in the clear. It's called CYA.
