  1. Hey does that thing work like a segway with a gyro in it ? Is there a You tube link to a video of it in movement?
  2. Hey steoppenwolf. If you look at the Venturte history you'll see that your bike in full touring trim was actually the the first Venturer. I know because I have both a 79 XS 1100 in full tour trim and an 85 Venturer. The XS has a powerful kick mostly because of less weight. The Venture at 800 lbs and only 15 more horse than the XS doesn't quite equal it. But The Venture is a complete package with a t frame meant for sportier riding. The XS was considered a power bike more for straight line excelleration. My XS is hooked up to a velorex sidecar and bulls like a bull all day long. The XS and the Venture have a similar characteristic of getting smoother as they go faster. Both seem happier higher in their rev range. The Venture I have is an 85 and still runs great. Then too so does my XS11. The Venture was such a good bike I believe thats why Honda produced the ST1100 and kawasaki the Concours in 87 to each have two bikes to compete with it. The Venture 1st Gen.was and is a real Sport touring bike. The second gen. is sporting but more a touring bike in keeping with the newer Wing, and Victory Vision. The First gen's real decendant now is the FJR1300 in my opinion.
  3. wow thats 540 miles a day for eight days.
  4. This reminds me of the time back in 85 when the IIHS was trying to get laws passed to ban sport bikes in the US. And a sport bike was what they defined it as. It could have been a Ninja 250 because it had full body work. ( THis is no lie go back and check AMA records of their efforts at the time.) It could have been a Honda Sabre because of its horsepower rating. Over night my insurance company cancelled my policy and notified me that because i rode a sport bike I could now open a new policy at twice the rate. I told them to stuff it up their a** and went to a new company. They got the message when other riders started dropping their company and not going back . I agree with Bill that when we start letting the Other guys take it in the neck and not stick behind them we all lose. Personally I think anyone that doesn't where a helmet doesn't think too much about him or herself and their own families. Brain injury is life changing , FOREVER but I still feel its ever riders right to decide for themselves. Don't even get me started on that Loud pipes saves lives myth! ABATE of all organization should be outraged by these laws, if it isn't then maybe it needs more sport bike members and fewer cruiser guys in its ranks. I ride sport and touring bikes and love them both. I also respect the power of those machines and others on the road. I know for a fact many a memeber here has bragged about taking their bikes over the ton and then some. These new laws will apply to us as well. I'm not condeming the laws but these will now have to be fought in the court to refine and define them . A costly business for all of us one way or the other.
  5. If it is a mteric bike it looks more like a kawasaki engine than the Suzuki. and the side cover seems to indicate that the engine is metric. BUT the rumors out of HD are that a new Ultra is coming out 2010 and it very likey will be liquid cooled because the engines have to meet Euro standards for engine noise by then. The fairing looks frame mounted like the old AMF ultra glides as well and the newer Road Glide. Also the top trunk opens to the side like a Harley and the bags could simply be Harleys way of making the design more spacious and in keeping with the Venture, Nomad Vision etc. So my guess is that its the 2010 Harley Ultra liquid cooled bike.
  6. I'm Ol Smokey of the Son's of SANTA???!!! we sick our elves on rival gangs!
  7. Mike must need all those junk cars for replacement parts for that 2nd gen of his.
  8. Brad check out Carols site and you'll see she always lays down towels or blankets on the ground underneath the high ways bars and touch points to protect any metal or plastic parts. But it is a good skill for her to have . What id you went down and broke a leg or had a heart attack At least yiou'd know she couls lift your bike and get it and you to safety Phil
  9. Hey Rosebud thanks for taking my suggestion seriously. Sorry about the misspelling of the name but I'm glad you found her sight. I've seen Carols demonstration and even tried it myself and its a great and easy method. Its something that every woman and alot of men should know so as not to hurt themselves when lifting a downed bike alone. Glad I could lend a constructive suggestion. phil.
  10. I brought home a Venture in a Chevy short bed crew cab from Michigan this past May. The rear wheel also on the tail gate. I distributed the weight with a ramp plank that I slide underneath both wheels. This helped to distribute the weight of the bike more evenly over the whole bed then I strapped the front end down tight slightly compressing the front shocks and shifting the weight forward. I was able to drive back from Michigan with out a single problem at 70 mph. no movement at all. Maybe i just got lucky but i never doubted it would hold. My brother also made a similar journey three years early with a ford ranger crew cab, same ramp plank and rear wheel on the bed. But its your call on this . this was just my experience. Phil.
  11. Hey Rosebud this started serious then got silly. Thats okay though silly is fun. But i have a suggestion. How about a demonstration of the Carol Skirkowski ( Skirt) method of how a woman can pick up her bike by herself if it ever goes down. Either by Carol herself or someone that has learned it from her, This is a valuable skill for any woman rider or passenger. Carols methods show how any woman of any size can lift any bike, Venture, Harley or Gold Wing with her legs (A womans most powerful body part.) Phil.

    Back from Sturgis

Not the first time I've heard a storyu about shootings at Sturgis. Another rason i'll probably never go. The area is beautiful i'd rather go and just enjoy the beautiful sights and friendly locals. Had a friend there a few years back in a bar where the Angels and another club cleared out the place with gun fire. He never was so scared.
  13. All that money and all that time just to make a 2nd gen run like a 1st Gen?!?
  14. I've loved watching the progress Harley has made since the eighties. There are some very beautiful machines coming from the Motor Company. ( The Road glide is one of my favorites). But the price of membership has always kept me away. Many Harley riders won't ride anything else because their afraid they'll lose all their "Friends' if they do or worse they might actually like another make. I fall into that groups that loves anything with two wheels and a motor. I don't bike bash because all bikes add to the evolution of or machines and our sport. Many with the attitude either don't understand Harleys history or the history of motorcycling in general. Thats a shame, they could take a greater pride by knowing how Harleys and other makes have all helped to make each other better and in knowing that be a little less insecure and therefore take even greater pride in their ride.
  15. Welcome home Scott .I just bought an 85 and the guys and gals here have all been great. Good advice , friendly invitations to meet and eats and rides galor wherever more than two members gather. Our bikes my be old but they're still Stars or Yamahas or whatever they call them now. Welcome.
  16. Also while your there it might not hurt to pick up a new furel filter. I'm surprised no one else mentioned this but it sounds like you might havwe a clogging filter that is restricting gas flow at higher speeds. Even if its not with all those years sitting , and probably not with a full tank ,rust in the tank is going to clog a filter eventually. So Seafoam and fuel filter should help alot.
  17. Jamie Elvidge was actually one of the testers in that article and even did a side bar about how much she liked the Victory Vision.. But I think you hit the nail on the head about why the Venture wasn't included. Obviously Yamaha did something right if the Venture is still selling without any major changes in 9 years. We'll probably see a comparison with the Venture if and when a new model comes out in 2010 (hopefully) with the newer V-Max engine derivative.
  18. Big foot what ever you do don't look into Southern central New York . Especially around the the Finger lakes. The winters are so mld that wineries keep popping up here like weeds. There are just too many beautiful homes old and new and your right in the middle of miserable riding areas like the Adirondack to thre east , The Catskills and Pocono and all those awfull twisty roads in western Pennslyvania. YUCK!. Theres a major medical complex in rochester NY but that a whole hour away. Okay 15 minutes by helicopter, But do you OWN a helicopter? And some of the town have really low taxes, who needs that? Right?! So don't ,I repeat, don't think about This part of New York . we already have enough Venture Rider people here we don't need any more! ....... Well okay we could use a few more. Just don't tell anybody else about this place.
  19. I wondered the exact same thing. But there were no upgrades on the Triumph this year. So that doesn't seem the answer. Personally the Venture fits the category much more than the Triumph does. I think the Rocket Three would be a better match for the Road King, King Pin , Suzuki Boulevard and even the Yamaha RSV Tour. Don, the article was in the latest issue of Motorcyclist but it should be in the on line magazine too
  20. My bike was dropped on the right side by previous owner and cracked the fairing near the mirror theres a 2 inch sliver missing there. i was going to ask if anyone had an idea to patch it thanks Igya I'm going out tp get some today. Check out my thread on scratched windshields. Quixx is also found at Wal Mart in the same Isle I believe.
  21. Thats another great tip thanks Bill. I'll remember that for my car.
  22. Yes I 've used that Magic eraser and I agree its fantastic.
  23. Hi Greg this is Philip In New York State USA. I saw the picture of your sidecars and was quite impressed. Hope you join my friends list can never have too many sidecarist on there, Check out my profile and the picture of my chair. Take care. phil.

  24. In the beginning I wasn't a fan of shorty shields but the more I see of them the more I like the look, That one looks great ! But kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it?
  25. Interestingly enough Harley is planning on selling more bikes in Europe than to the American market( or so the magazines say) and they've just developed a 100bhp Sportster with a real suspension that will only be sold in Europe. Maybe its their way of getting around American buyers that only want pushrod and air cooled engines. Not that push rods and air cooled engines have hurt Yamaha sales any.
