  1. When I was a kid, Doug would drive the steam tractor in the parade. Pretty impressive. This auction is the 3rd and last auction. He had building after building filled with collectables. Unfortunately I missed the first two auctions.
  2. A couple that I've known all of my life and are now passed on are having their estate auction next Saturday. One item that I've always wanted is on the list. http://www.helbergnussauction.com/auctions/reetz/reetz.htm My wife said no.
  3. Lebanon, Kansas touts itself as the geographical center of the lower 48 states. One of the rides could be to nearby Cawker City to see the world's largest ball of twine.
  4. I think the only logical place to have the 2009 rally is right here at the center of the universe, Alliance, Nebraska. Specifically Carhenge. (It's all that we've got here.) http://www.carhenge.com/photogalleries.htm My second choice would be Custer South Dakota, or even Keystone, Hill City or Rapid City.
  5. Where's it going to be next year?
  6. If the Tail of the Dragon has 318 curves in 11 miles, how many curves does the Iron Mountain Road have, and how does one count the curves anyway. For example, on the Iron Mountain road does one of the pigtail bridges count as one curve or several since it completes far more than a complete circle. I once tried to count the curves on this 18 mile road and was about halfway through with a count of 250 when I lost track when I focused more on the ride than the count.
  7. Ronda and I are planning a trip in late September and early October. We plan on heading out to Yosemite National Park, then working our way up the coast to Seattle before making our way home. One of the places that we want to see is a beach that we saw on the Travel Channel several years ago. It is a beach with massive pillars of rocks and tidal pools that of course is only accessible when the tide is out. I think it is on the coast of Oregon, but it could be Washington. With all of our members, surely someone knows the place. Thanks
  8. When I hit the 'Going to the Sun Road' I like to go from west Glacier up to Logan Pass and then turn around and head back down the way I came. Just up the hill east of West Glacier on Highway 2, make sure to stop at the 'Halfway House' and have their fried chicken. It's just a very small cafe on the north side of the highway about a mile west of Essex.
  9. Having loud pipes is just the same as a little kid putting the baseball cards on his bicycle. It sounds cool. Thankfully, little boys do grow up. There is another saying out there, "Loud Pipes Lose Rights!" Just look at what some cities are doing with the banning of aftermarket pipes. Having loud pipes falls into the same category as the helmet debate. You'll see bikers wearing the boots, wearing the leather chaps, wearing the leather jacket claiming they want the protection, yet they won't wear a helmet. It's all about image. They want to portray themselves as some bad ass biker, instead they come off looking like an idiot. While the loud pipes may stroke their self image, all they do is irritate others. How about another motto, "The Louder the Pipes, the Bigger the '@$^?*@&'!" How's that for stirring the pot?
  10. :no-no-no:"Everyone" knows that there is no 'wrong' direction to ride this road and as for the '365 degrees, this bridge completes more that a full circle. If anyone has ever ridden this road, they would know that. :no-no-no:About the only thing you were right about was that they are called the 'pigtail' bridges and that they were going too slow. And as for taking a car on that drive, if the traffic is light, it's almost as much fun as it is on the bike. "Sheesh!"
  11. Make sure that you hit the 'Iron Mountain Road'. As you head down the hill just before you get to Keystone make a right and head south, this road makes the Tail of the Dragon look like a straight away. There are 3 pigtail bridges and quite a few hairpins. I tried to count the number of turns on this 18 mile stretch of road and gave up at 250 and was only about half way through it. This road along with the needles highway and the wildlife loop is part of my favorite ride when I only have time for a day trip. I live about 2 and a half hours away from Mt Rushmore and make it to the hills several times each riding season. Found a link for a short video of one of the tunnels and pigtail bridges. 12. I'm 52 and have my hearing aids for just over 2 years now and love them. I got mine through www.hearingplanet.com I especially like the different programs that I can scroll through while I'm wearing them for different situations, like background noise, locomotive noise, and more. With hearing aids the old saying is true that you do get what you pay for. One thing that I learned while researching hearing aids that when you brain loses the ability to process certain sounds, that ability is gone forever and can never be rehabilitated. I was down to 90%. It can get so bad that if you wait too long, hearing aids won't do you any good at all. So, it is better to get them now rather to wait until you think 'OK, I can't hear anything at all" and then finding out that they won't help.
  13. In the 70's for a short while, Rokon also made an enduro. It was only rear wheel drive and had a constant variable transmission just like a snowmobile. The dealer brought one out to the ranch for us to try and by the time my Dad was finished by the end of the day, it was trashed. With that CVT though, it was sure fun to wheelie.
  14. Something I do once in awhile is us a bicycle gel seat cover that I got at Wallyworld and move it around on the saddle to different spots as I ride.
  15. My son and his wife arrived in Viet Nam yesterday and met their new son, Ethan. This moment has been a long time coming.http://bp1.blogger.com/_S0WXKXdVNdY/RzhTuzTUYUI/AAAAAAAAA10/jCF7FLM-4p0/s200/DSCF0491.JPG They took Ellie, their 4 year old with them and Evan stayed back here in Cheyenne with Misty's folks. They will be returning back home in about 2 weeks after Ethan's visa is processed.
  16. Got my December issue of 'Rider' and it had a great article in it on the Patriot Guard. Anybody from our group in any on the photos?
  17. I found this stress test at one of my favorite research sites; www.ldolphin.org http://www.sbac.edu/~research/stresstest.html
  18. I replaced the stator on my bike this spring and ran into problems putting it back together. After referring to the tech section here for the specific problem I was having, it almost fell together. When putting the side cover back on the bike be sure to put the bell crank portion of the shift linkage on top of the pivot point and not the bottom like it naturally wants to do. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8082&highlight=shift+linkage Also read up on how to seal the wires that come through the side case. My new wires are of a smaller diameter that stock so if you don't seal them well enough, you will have an oil leak. I didn't do a good enough job on mine and have to redo the seal. Good luck, Scooter
  19. What's with the poll about the 1st Gen wobble? There is no selection for no wobble at all, which is the catagory that my bike fits into.
  20. My oldest son and his wife just got the call from the adoption agency out of Kansas City, for the 'go-ahead' to travel to Viet Nam and get my new grandson Ethan. They will be traveling in a group with other adoptive parents. They already have a 4 year old daughter, (Ellie) and a 2 year old son, (Evan) of their own. Ethan and Evan are a month apart in age so we are refering to them as 'the twins'.
  21. We'll take some of that rain too! We've had less than 12 inches of moisture so far this year.
  22. Ronda and I will be taking the bus tour around Boston this coming Friday. Never been any further east than St Louis. Then on saturday we are driving up the coast of Maine for the fall colors.
  23. I got mine at Dennis Kirk, I think it was about $130.
  24. I've been getting 34 on my '83, but it likes to run at 80mph if I will let it. Definately use the SeaFoam. My bike sat for 10 years and I drained the gas put in a can of SeaFoam, fresh gas, and it fired right up.
  25. Here is a short video that I ran across on youtube that gives just a little taste of my favorite ride. This video shows only one of the three pigtail bridges. [ame=http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3718826354166885858&q=black+hills+iron+mountain+road&total=12&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0]Iron Mountain Road[/ame] The last time that I rode it, I tried to count the curves to see how it compared to the Tail of the Dragon, I lost count at around 250 and was only about 2/3 of the way through the road. I think the road is about 18 miles long.
