Good going, what's next?
-
I figured this would be a tough one, but read the post...never said it had to be a "real" challenger, just a new one. Be creative. I sure didn't want to kill the hunt, just wanted to see what all you smart guys would come up with. Guess I forgot how hard they could be to come by, Chrysler's been doing a lot of cold weather testing of them up here for the last 6 months, I've been seeing them fairly regularly lately. Heck, my wife got to sit in one back in December.

Got the bike out yesterday for about a 70 mile ride and the problem seems to be gone. I set the sync back the number of turns I took out, reduced the idle correctly, and with the new vacuum hose to the baro sensor, it is running like a top and the idle is staying where it should. Thanks to all who helped keep me on the right track and turning the right knobs.

Rusty farm equipment in the trees. Take your pick, old combines, or horse drawn harrows, whichever you choose. Next task, you, your bike and a new Dodge Challenger.
-
Well, good thing I kept track of how much I turned it...I'm gonna go change that right now. Thanks, I'll learn one of these days.
-
Okay, after spending the day playing with it, I ended up replacing the vacuum hose from #2 to the baro sensor and setting the idle down just a little bit. It now seems to keep the idle pretty close to 1000 rpm. Not too sure about that baro sensor, but I'll ride it for a while and see. However, I did notice some hesitation a couple times when getting on it from low rpms in 1st...when I set the idle down, I used the screw by the throttle cable over by #2, I'm assuming that was the right one?
-
With the #2 vacuum disconnected, and my finger over the hose, which is pretty dry, and the end has small cracks in it, there was no change, lower idle, and doggy acceleration. WIth the hose hooked back up, immediate rpm increase of at least 500 and normal acceleration. All carbs seem to be in sync.
-
Okay, I've been playing some more today, and now that I"ve finally got the airbox off (how I'm gonna get the hoses hooked up again, I'm not sure) I was poking around pulling vacuum lines with no change in the high idle, I did find that when I disconnected the vacuum line from the #2 intake (front left), the idle went back to about 1000. However, when i tried to accelerate, it would, but after a few seconds at around 3000 it would bog down and try to decelerate. Any thoughts? Maybe bad baro sensor?

I haven't read the thread, but if the level was set incorrectly, wouldn't that be detrimental to the mileage. I've been pulling down a consistent 39-40mpg riding 2 up. Oh, and another dumb question, which carbs are which. Where does the numbering start so I can check the sync? Thx
-
Thanks guys, that's giving me something to work with. I'm so new to these things that most of it's PFM! Oh, and does anyone have Chapter 9 of the manual on their computer, the troubleshooting guide? The one I downloaded here doesn't include it. Thanks.

Okay, tried looking for the vacuum leak today, no luck, but now it's giving me a little bit of a backfire on startup, any additional thoughts.
-
Okay, I've done some research on this. I've been looking for a vacuum leak, tomorrow I'm going to pull the air box and look at the butterflies, the choke seems to be closing all the way with the lever positioned off. What I'm running into is that recently the idle has started increasing on its own as the engine warms up. It starts out at about 900-1000, and by the time it's warmed up in about 10 minutes, it's run up to about 2000 rpm. If I goose it quickly, there's no hesitation, and it'll come back down to about 1300 rpm, then ease its way back up to 2000. I don't have any tools to adjust the carb sync, but is there anything else I may be able check on my own? Thanks

Finally made my way through the thread. Many good points, and I would like to put in my 2 cents. I live 75 miles away from any real civilization. This includes my job, for which I drive 1 hour each way to make my paycheck. 4 years ago I started this commute, for which I sold my F150 and bought a Hyundai Elantra. Fuel then was just about 1.70/gal, today I paid 3.50 to fill my Toyota, just about $46, and then turned around and paid $38 to fill my elantra when I drove to work. I now figure $400/month to drive to work. These numbers show an average of 25% increases each year, but my pay goes up by maybe 3.2%...and I'm supposed to be grateful for that.I stopped buying propane to heat with 2 years ago and installed a corn burning stove, for which I started paying 2.35/bushel, today I also bought that at $5.75 a bushel. Thank God propane has risen faster than corn, so at least I'm still saving a buttload heating with corn. Now, I would love to live closer to work, but I'm stuck in the middle. My fuel expenses are getting very painful, but for some damn reason (farm bill anyone), Grand Forks, ND has a horribly overpriced market. Even if I could afford the house, I can't afford to heat it during our 7 month long winters, and I can't afford the damn taxes. Now, this brings up an early comment, we learned at the elevator today that maybe 10% of their corn is going to Ethanol, the other is going north to Canada for food. No offense to our Canadian brothers, but we're burning our food, and what we're not burning we're shipping outside our borders. Can anyone say NAFTA? I was told by my congressman recently how important our trade policies with Uraguay are...no one up there gets it, but as long as they're making money and staying in power, we're screwed. I'm also one of the next generation, as I'm only 29, and I'm pissed as hell. I have to pay exorbitant prices for food, fuel, heat, taxes, and somewhere in there I'm supposed to be having children to continue paying for medicare, social security and any other damn entitlement, as well as trying to put money away for my own retirement because those entitlements won't be there for my wife and I. To my knowledge, the founding documents repeatedly spoke of posterity...all I can see are people asking for more from the govt and less from themselves. We can't go on this way, we must figure out a way to be more self reliant, trash every Goddamn free trade piece of paper and encourage inovation to rid us of this addiction to foreign oil that someone should have addressed, oh I don't know, maybe around the time of the first oil shortage. Thirty seven years was quite a long time to waste. You know, Adam Smith, and even the ancient greeks spoke of the problems that consume this country today. Too bad more people didn't read them in High School, probably would've been a better way to spend the time than Football practice. Sorry this was so long, and I hope it was somewhat comprehendable.

I don't know about the vstars, but I got on my buddy's ultra classic the other day and I felt the same way. Way too cramped, and not comfortable at all.

:rotf:I think THAT would deserve extra credit!

I'd like to hard wire the power source for my XM, and i've searched a couple ways to do it that look straight forward. My question is, the power cord that I have now indicates 5vdc, is there some sort of resistor in the cigarette adapter that lowers the voltage to the unit, or is that just a minimum and will run off 12vdc no problem? Thanks Joe

Last can I bought here in this little town was $8 and change a can. I hate Walmart, but I can't afford it here in town. Poured half a can in with fresh gas a week or so ago, runs like a champ.

Mine did the same, mostly when the temps were around 0F. I FINALLY got it out for this season's first ride today, and as I suspected, the front drain sealed off nicely and all traces of the leak were gone. You can see if this is your problem without taking anything off. Put the bike on the side stand, turn the front wheel all the way left and you can see the little plastic drain plug on the cross tube through the grating in the lower chin fairing. If it's not from there, check your clamps as said above. I found a loose clamp earlier this winter and that drain plug. Not gonna worry about the plug for now....it's time for riding! -
I guess I'm one of the few, but I LOVE the looks of that bike. If we were a little richer and lived somewhere we could get it out more often, I'd have one right now.

Winter be Damned, got out on the scoot yesterday!

Try this. Been 40 degrees down here, sunny, and the only damn ice on the road is between my driveway and the stop sign. 25 feet of rutted ice pack keeping me from getting her out. Damn city workers! -

Spoke too soon. Finally found the right combination of search terms. For now I'm going to assume the removal is the same on an 83 as it is for an 86. Someone speak up if I'm wrong. -

I don't think it would be worn pads, it hasn't been ridden since I bought it, and everything checked out okay then. I'm suspicious of the extreme cold messing with a sensor or possibly the cms. I've been researching the threads and going through my manual, doe anyone know exactly hot to get the cms out if I do have to go that way? Thanks. -
I HATED it when it came out, and I still want to vomit when I hear it now. Thought someone would've burned the original recording years ago...Tanya Tucker, "Two Sparrows in a Hurricane" Just want to rip my ears clean off my head when it comes on. I guess they could play it for inturnees at Gitmo.

Hit 33f here today, sunny and the snow's almost gone on the driveway. Now, about the 3 inches that's still on the roads...
