  1. What did you tear down to get to it? I would like to check mine. Thanks Dan Oh, forgot----PICS---PICS----PICS!
  2. THe only thing I can think of is that the outer shaft passes through the stator case, and on the back side of that there is a ball & knuckle joint with a rod that goes to the rear of the tranny where there is anothe knuckle joint. From there it passes through the tranny to the shift cam on the right side. Possibly one of the knuckle joints are bad. You could remove the clutch cover (carefully so as not to tear the gasket), have someone move the shifter and see if the play is on clutch side or shifter side. I know that you cannot access the rod between the knuckles without removing some stuff. It's buried!!! Maybe someone else knows more (I'm sure they Do), but perhaps this is a starting point for you. Good luck, Dan:080402gudl_prv:
  3. Just a thought---- could you adapt or make a heel-toe shifter for use with the pegs???? Maybe Freebird or some of the other guys could tell us if it's been done before.
  4. Indyrick & Bummer, hi guys, I'm also in Indy on SE side in Shelby cnty. If you need help sometime or want to hook-up and ride, let me know. You got it fixed b4 I saw the thread. Safe riding, Dan
  5. Just checked at NAPA, they want 50 bucks for theirs, too.
  6. Just found a set on ebay for an 83. Check #230162279790. Not sure if every thing is there for the heel-toe though. I agree with previous post, I'm 6'3 and the pegs allow me to angle my foot. wish I could move the peg more forward, or lengthen the frame to stretch out a bit. Dan
  7. They ought to show that in drivers ed classes!
  8. Just a thought, but in closing off all the airflow coming out of the motor, as tight as it is under there, will it eventually cause heat-soak stress to the motor? And would adding insulation to the underside of the panels make it even hotter under there? I have been contemplating (thinking- for those in Rio Lindo, Ca.) doing the same to mine, but haven't justified it yet. There was aprevious post in here on how to make the inserts for the early side covers. Dan:stirthepot:
  9. Thanks George, being a master electrician, I should have done all that, but with remodeling the kitchen, etc., the brain and me don't get enuff time to work on the bike as much as I want to. Will try that when I get a chance.
  10. Speaking of rubber straps for the side covers, any one have 1 extra they might sell me? Only have one and I'd like one for the other side. Thanks, Dan:confused24:
  11. That's my next move, I believe. Whats the best place to purchase, web or dealer?
  12. Haven't done that yet, next door neighbor is an at-home bike mechanic, just waitin to get to him.
  13. Need a little help. Changed left rear exhaust donut, got it back together, checked plugs, all tan on porcelain. Has been sputtering at idle, pulled off the breather, upon rev up and back down, am getting a backfire (fuel, no fire) from the left rear cylinder. Doesn't do it constantly, only once per blip. Pulled plug wires one at a time, LR doesn't make much change, LF is definate miss, RF is questionable, same as rear. Doesn't seem to affect operation, pulls good with a good twist of the right wrist, even with rider on back. Doesn't seem like a clean burn out of the exhaust, either. It just feels like it is missing. Oh, also have gas on under side of breather box on left side, can't find source. Not dripping, just coated. 1 more thing, changed stator and regulator, is 14.6 at the battery too high? I have a couple spare regs to try. Help is appreciated. Will be back shortly, going back into garage to put plastic back on. Thanks in advance, Dan
  14. RWStator.com in Canada puts out a good product.
  15. When you do it once, it's an experiment. When you do it twice, you're an expert. If you do it three times, you're a genius at working on these bikes!
  16. Another trick I discovered, make sure the knuckle joint for the shifter rod Inside joint) is pointed up before you try putting the cover on, I had to do mine 3 times before getting it right! Dan
  17. My 84, with no carb work or tune up, goes 140 mi on 3.3 gals. of gas. Averaged over 6 or 7 tanks. Oh, I can't use reserve cause I ain't fixed it yet! Dan
  18. Could diaphragms be part of my high-idle (2k) that I experience after warm-up? Just wondering....... Dan
  19. I wasn't sure I could replace just the pin, and didn't want to take a chance on it getting to anything delicate, so I was determined to find it. I will keep you on file, though, in case I really lose one. Thanks, Dan
  20. Just found out, if one of your shift pins in the end of the shift cam come all the way out, and you can't find it in the oil pan or any other easy place, check the filter screen for the oil pump intake!!! Mine came out in Cincy, couldn't shift to 4th, finally tore it apart and finally found it in the screen! I'll make sure those tabs are bent over good before I put it back together, for sure!! Oh well, back to the bike. Dan
  21. My neighbor is a big VMax guy, says the airbox is tuned for the correct amount of air flow to the engine, any more airflow leans out the motor too much. Has experimented and found that stock is best. Good luck and safe riding! Dan
  22. I've got the Metzeler me880's on my 1st gen, thought they are pretty good so far, about 4k. Good traction, even in the wet. Cost me about 300 for the pair. Dan
