  1. I bought a V-star after 25 years of non-riding. I discovered I still love riding and surprisingly so does my wife of 2 years. I say surprisingly because she had never ridden before I bought this bike. We like it so much that I thought about buying a RSTD for more comfort on longer trips. In fact I had fallen in love with them until I found one that I thought was a good buy. It was an '05 with 4K on it. I had the money in my pocket and was ready to buy until I test drove it. It had a loud whine every time I gave it the slightest bit of throttle. I ran from it, but after reading up on it on the internet it seems to be common with this bike. My question is, if you have this whine do you get used to it, or does it finally drive you crazy? Jim
  2. A while back I said I would report back on getting my "I" basket done. I finally had enough time planned for non-riding and got the work done recently. I took it to RER Motorcity in Monroe CT. The service manager's name is Pete. He said that while they had not done an "I" basket he knew exactly what I was talking about when I mentioned the whine. He said they would contact Yamaha and coordinate everything for me. He than took me into the back and introduced me to the mechanic that would actually be doing the work. The shop was clean and well organized even though it was very busy. They ordered the part and we scheduled an actual day for the work. Once they got into the replacement they found out that Yammy had not sent a gasket they needed for the job. Pete called me that day and told me what had happened. He called Yamaha and arraigned for them to send the needed gasket. After two days Yamaha had not sent the gasket and Pete called them again, With out any coaxing from me he "discussed" it with them and Yammy sent it to him via overnight (hehehe). Through out the whole process Pete kept me well informed and was definately my advocate with Yamaha. I told him about this forum and told him I would tell everyone about my experience with RER. He apoligized to me for the delays but said that now that they know exactly what to do, and what is required, they are more than ready to help out anyone else that would need the "I" basket change under warrenty. I would highly recommend RER for the "I" basket work. As for the whine, well mine is gone, adios, sayanora, tata, out of here and I love this bike even more than before (which I didn't think possible). Now the only whine associated with this bike is me whining about not getting enough riding time.

    Its Gone

There's no five year warranty here in Australia so you either put up with the whine or take a chance and pay for the fix yourself. The local Yamaha stealer wanted $450 for a new "I" basket before installation. I purchased one from boats.net in Florida which arrived here in Perth within a week and it only cost me $227 plus postage $40. My local mechanic charged me $100 for the install. Just gave it a test ride and the whine is totally gone. This is a cheap option compared to looking for another bike. Mine is a 2004 model and the clutch basket removed is a "G" variation. I can now turn the radio down a couple of notched and listen to that V4:happy34: Steve
  4. My 07 RSV has got a nasty bad whine, around 40 -50 mph its the worst. the farther you lean the worse it gets and if you pull in the clutch you can feel a slight vibration in the floorboards too. I have got 3800 miles on it now. I'm not sure it is gear noise due to the fact that the noise does not change on coast or acceleration. the noise only gets louder when leaning. This makes me think it has more to do with the axle bearings. I will be taking it in later this week. Do any of these symptoms match what any of you that have had final drive issues? Ken C.
  5. I just put 800 miles on my 07 RSV last weekend and noticed a bad whine. Seems to be in the tranny. Same in all gears, whines when steady speed and when accellerating, goes completely away when de-accellerating. I'm going to change oil anyway to see if that helps but doesn't sound good. I have 3200 miles on the bike and love it. I have already had to have the rear drive splines re-lubed, no problem since. Any suggestions or ideas?
  6. I just rode my Venture home from the dealer after the clutch basket exchange on the gears. All I can say is I "think" I can hear a small difference and it might just be in my head because I can definitely still hear the whine and chirping. It was a warranty repair and the basket that went in looked exactly like the one that came out. Even the mechanic couldn't tell the difference. I think it's a sound I'll have to live with until I trade it to a wing or a newer version of the Venture without the whine. Eddie
  7. Besides the usual chirping on my 07 venture, I'm noticing more of a whine coming from the side of the bike and towards the rear. If I turn the radio up the whine is drowned a bit but it's very annoying and making me not enjoy the ride as much. I know some have mentioned the basket fix and my dealer says they want to go through the rear end, whatever that means. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I just went over 10,000 miles on the odometer. Otherwise, I love the bike!!! Eddie
  8. After reading another post here it got me wondering... Not all bikes are all things to all riders. With that being said, what would you change about your RSV? For me: 1) Engine; EFI. 2) Transmission; Get rid of that gear whine ! 3) Saddlebags; Yamaha, can you say, "quick release" ? 4) CD player; Come on, a cassett player ? Why not an 8-track ?
  9. Due in large measure to the assistance and information from this board, I was able to substaintialy reduce the problem around the "now famous" gear whine or chirp that is very noticable in the 2nd gen Royal Star Venture. My dealer installed the "I Basket" under warranty. Having all the notes and information supplied by the many members who have experienced this issued helped greatly. I am happy to say that the problem is probably 75% fixed. There is still some noticable chirping but it has moved out of the touring speeds, and the tone of the chirp is no where near as annoying as it was previously. I can live with the chirping sound now. What I cant understand is why Yamaha does not just simply FIX the problem to begin with rather than making owners go through and Un-announced warranty procedure. MickO:confused24:
  10. has anyone ever used or heard of anyone using additives or synthetic oils to stop the "chirp or whine"
  11. The World is Mine Today, upon a bus, I saw a very beautiful woman And wished I were as beautiful When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle. She had one leg and wore a crutch. But as she passed, she passed a smile. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two legs; the world is mine. I stopped to buy some candy. The lad who sold it had such charm. I talked with him, he seemed so glad If I were late, it'd do no harm. And as I left, he said to me, "I thank you, you've been so kind. It's nice to talk with folks like you. You see," he said, "I'm blind." Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two eyes; the world is mine. Later while walking down the street, I saw a child I knew. He stood and watched the others play, but he did not know what to do. I stopped a moment and then I said, "Why don't you join them dear?" He looked ahead without a word. I forgot, he couldn't hear. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two ears; the world is mine. With feet to take me where I'd go. With eyes to see the sunset's glow. With ears to hear what I'd know. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I've been blessed indeed, the world is mine. This morning when I wakened And saw the sun above, I softly said, "Good morning, Lord, Bless everyone I love." And right away I thought of you And said a loving prayer, That He would bless you specially, And keep you free from care. I thought of all the happiness A day could hold in store, I wished it all for you because No one deserves it more. PLEASE SEND THIS TO ANY AND EVERYONE YOU CARE ABOUT, I just did!
  12. Does anyone know if Yamaha is doing anything about the Royal Stars differential whine? Mine is getting louder! Its quiet for about the first half mile then it starts whining. Thanks for the help!
  13. I have noticed recently a whine coming from the rear end when going through left curves. It seems most noticable when the bike is in 4th and 5th gear. I do not hear it when going through right hand curves. I have read about clicking noises in earlier posts but this is a loud whine. I also am certain that it is not the tranny whine you hear on metric bikes. Anyone got any ideas? Is it a bad bearing? I have not been able to get to the shop yet to have it checked out.
  14. I read somewhere here that diesel oil is OK to use in these engines. Is that 15W40? And is it true? I have a '99 Tour Deluxe and it's oil change time. I thought maybe 15-40 would get rid of the clutch whine seeing as it's thicker oil. If not, I plan to use synthetic. Bike has 31,000 miles on it. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  15. I've got an 89 VR. Looking to buy 06 RSV from dealer 2000 miles away. Had a friend go check it out for me...he's used to riding a Honda Shadow...never ridden a Venture. He said it was great except he noticed when in 4th gear at about 45 mph he was hearing what he called a gear whine...kept going until he shifted. Said it happened at in 3rd also. Said it wasn't unbearable but was noticeable. The bike has had the clutch basket replaced (which the original owner told me helped a LOT). I think the 1st gen & 2nd gen engines are basically the same engine. I've read all the threads here about the whine & chirp and now I'm leary of plunking down the money if it's something that's overtly noticeable. I'm wondering if I would notice that whine as much myself, since I've ridden my VR for 17 years & am used to that engine (never noticed anything myself). Any ideas? Thanks for the help...JR
  16. Although Yamaha hasn't made any announcements about the cure for the whine in the Venture Engines after looking around on the Star site I find they do indeed have a fix for the whine...... http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/apparel/apscitemdetail/2/102/all/all/3856/detail.aspx Cheap too. Jerry
  17. Our local CMA chapter had a ride from Mobile to Owassa,AL, just over 100 mile north of Mobile. Beautiful day and about 55 degrees. Fished in his lake and had a cookout with good old home cooking. My wife an I had a wounderful time. We drove at an indicated 75 which I know is actually 70, but I went 186.2 miles on 4.3 gallons, 43.3 mpg. I could have made it all the way home but I didn't want to take the chance of not making it. Big Blue ran great. I am real happy with it. Oh, at that speed with the intercom on I couldnot hear the whine. Today I rode with a friend on his RK and I heard a whine that I had not heard before, then I noticed it was his HD whineing louder than Big Blue. tew47:bighug:
  18. Hi All: I wish to tell you the whole story and then I am going to shut up, this is my last post on the clutch whine on the Venture. I have done all that is humanly possible, and I really do think I have the answer. I know what is causing this and it is not the clutch. However to solve it would be very expensive, and without information on gear tolerance, it may very well not be a solution we as laymen can do, with normal tools and knowledge. First for my dealer(what a joke they are!!) They are the typical dealer, nice boy salt will melt in their mouth when selling, want service, well, er........we will get back with you. Part of this is my own fault, I knew I wanted a Venture, I read all about it for six months. Thing is it was in motorcycle books, and on internet trial postings. I knew about the windshield, but there was not a word about this clutch whine business on any of them, or most likely I would not have purchased one. I like I say am partly to blame, as I purchased the bike, sight unseen, brand new from a dealer in South Carolina. We went up and my wife dropped me off and I took it home. I almost turned it around the first day half way home, then my common sense took over.......twas too late.........no faith in any dealer, always justified.....so on home we went, screaming the whole way!! Two days after bringing it home I called the dealer, the original person whom I dealt with was not there, left a message for him to call me, he never did. Next day I wrote them an email, explaining this situation and asking for advice and help, they never replied. Fellows there will not be a third time, I really do not like dealers at all and this just put the final nail in the coffin. Hey just yesterday we got the propaganda letter from the dealer, you know the one that says , Hey Kit Thanks for your purchase, we are sure you will enjoy many years with your new motorcycle!! They had my name wrong, and the letter was not signed. They will never turn a bolt on my bike, ever , this has been my dealership experience with most local dealers. I am told there is a good one in Sumter.......personally I am not going to go find out!! Before I finish I wish to say somewhere along the line , I have fell in love with this awesome machine. It is a great one, has a lot of good points, in fact many more than the bad, so I will keep it, and if anyone wants to listen to me, I will help them fix it........if not , I will leave them on their own and hope for better luck in five , years. Yes I will buy another one........I do like the bike. I have changed oil in this thing so much I may wear out the drain plug!! I am now running 20w50 with 10percent Lucas oil additive. This does really , really help, at high end of gearing, and at high speed. There is no noise at interstate speeds. We have also changed the clutch assembly and the clutch basket. We looked at all this stuff real close, one of us is plumber, the other is a mechanic, and both are full of sh......! But we could not see what we were going to accomplish. So we did run the engine without the assembly installed and yep.......the harmonics of the gear box travels through the gears to the main drive shaft and seems to resonate to the aluminum basket housing, hit the cover and magnify. Somehow I do not know exactly how the new assembly does move the sound to a lower rpm level. Could be the weight of the assembly, that is something we did not think to check on. The whine sound folks is not the clutch, it is a harmonic resonance from the gears, traveling out to the clutch cover and being magnified. If you want to study this on your own, look up textile machinery, hearing loss and some other things. Cut gears, high performance cars, gear mesh etc. I am also aware that to a small extent, the sound is held in by this high windshield and fairing which slightly compounds the situation also. So running non-warranty oil and a different clutch assembly, in 4th gear at 60 mph the sound is gone now.......70 mph in fifth gear, want to putter along at 55 in fifth.........will not take long to get annoying. So I have just ordered a set of Road House Pipes. I will mask the whine!! No I will not use earplugs, I want to hear the wheels sliding as the car behind me tries to run over me, so I can drop the clutch and get hit by the car coming across the intersection-maybe it will be clear!!. The only way I can see to fix the whine is to build a new transmission, close the gear tolerance and polish them up, blueprint it if you will. Nope not going to go to all that trouble. I kinda like loud pipes anyway. Now I will shut up.........this is my final solution. Kit
  19. Okay, I just violated all the safety rules and went for a spin without my helmet, I have been playing with the transmission noise on my new 2007 Venture for some time now and my results are quite good. There is still a small whine, will explain what that is in a minute, but the gear box noise is gone.........bye.......non existent, and that high ear grinding noise at interstate speeds......hey I can hear the pipes now!! First let me tell all of you I am not any kind of expert, and in no way know it all, what I have done I will not recommend to any of you, this is simply what I have done, I really do not think it will harm the engine, if it does, I will go get a new one!! I am just telling you what I have done and it is based on some good research, not opinions, nope, everyone has one of those, sometimes I have two or three:sign20:. I have based on the formula of 4 quarts of oil, 128 ounces total, and the fact that Yamaha tells us to use 3.91 quarts with a filter change, I have dropped the .01 as that makes my brain hurt, and used simply 3.90. We used to run the road racers 3 ounces low on purpose. If some math expert figures out I am .0001 off over or under, sorry, I am a common sense person, hey might be .001 more or less in a different brand filter, do not worry about such minor things!! So I have used 3 quarts of Castrol 20W50 Syntec Blend 17 ounces of Castrol standard 50 weight 12.5 ounces of Lucas Oil additive. For a total of 125.5 ounces of total volume in the unit. I used the main oil base of a Synthetic blend as I did not want a full Synthetic, a full Synthetic I am told by those I have pestered to death in the oil industry at high temps, is designed to flow into the small spaces in any engine and lubricate them, it goes to its lowest viscosity when it gets hot........it also coats on the parts better than regular oils.......a balance of the two is to use a blend. I added the standard 50 weight to try to beef up the base oil some, I had already found out I had to be careful using too heavy an oil, and the Lucas oil additive causes all this to cling to the transmission gears and as far as I can tell it is doing well. I have not took it out on a long jaunt, got it hot yet, going to do that this Saturday. Again do not do this until I put a few miles on it, this is something I have done, like I have told you, I am no expert, I am just someone who looks at things when they get so technical no one can understand them, and so much discussion surrounds simple things, I tend to throw all that stuff in the round file and use common sense. Now after all this and my test ride just a bit ago. I do still have a high pitched whine , not a gear whine, but something else. I listened to that at idle, took it around the block again, hit the interstate for a bit and it was gone, I could even listen to the pipes on the interstate, slow down and could hear a whine, idle it and rev it a bit , hear the whine........got one of my wifes stethascopes (how do you spell that anyway? ) it is the thing the doctor listens to your ticker with, I use one to find water leaks under a concrete slab with sometimes. Fellows this residual whine is the pistons moving up and down in the block, you can actually hear it increase and decrease as you vary the motor speed at idle. Will let you know after tomorrow.......but the heavier oil , and Lucas additive, has taken 90 percent of it away. The residual whine is the motor working......I personally kinda like it.....sounds like power to me!! Gave my fancy mustang to my youngest son for this past Christmas, it had that power whine, tis a pretty one to. Bright Yellow, this is to me what the remaining noise is. Take Care, all things have variables, this has worked for me, I think it will for others also, just let me put a few miles on it.....I also live in the south, what I have done may not be good for a motor where it gets cold, be very aware of that fact. Kit Take Care Kit
  20. Has anyone ever done a study, or did the math on what the odds are of getting a new RSV with the whine. I had an 05 midnight that did not have it.
  21. Took my bike to dealer today about the clutch whine and was told Yamaha does not replace clutch baskets anymore. But will install BUBs slipons instead. What do youall think of this? tew47
  22. I am new to this site, and have read and re-read the complaints about the whine the venture makes. Some say it is the cut gears........some say it is the clutch basket, some say it is the rear drive. I myself have rode my new venture for 4 months, putting 5200 miles on it already, and early this morning I took it for a 200 mile jaunt and paid particular attention to the whine. I know now why I never even considered it. All big bike motors have this so called whine.......all of them........that is why I was wondering exactly what everyone was talking about. My recent Suzuki 1400 Intruder made more noise than my new Venture. That was until I put drag pipes on it , then I could not hear the motor at all....!! Thinking back my Honda shadow did this same thing.......not so distinct......but it was there. The venture runs so quiet you can hear the motor work. I think this is the whine , exactly what is , I really do not know, I actually think it is the pistons going up and down in the cylinder sleeves as the noise varies at slow to high speed........some say changing the clutch basket moves the noise? Hum?? I am not sure what it is........I do know if the pipes did not run so quiet, most likely no one would even worry or complain about this. I am most likely going to get beat up for this post.......that is okay.......I have a sense of humor(Hey!) But I really do not think the whine thing is an issue. I have confidence in my machine, I really do, and do not even worry about the whine, I think it is just part of the bike, and if it had louder pipes.......no one would even notice it. I personally like to hear the motor work.....is part of the fun of riding. To poke along on secondary roads and enjoy the sound of the bike....enjoy life, enjoy just being alive...no I like my bike just fine.......whine and all!! Kit
  23. A while back I posted about a whining sound I would get going around a right hand curve at speed. Well, I cured it! Turns out it was the rear tire. Even though the tire was not worn out, I had to replace it due to a leak from a nail. I put the same brand/size back on (Avon Venom X) a couple weeks ago and I no longer hear that whine. On another note (and referencing other posts) I also had a whining gear noise during deceleration. Others have stated they have this too. Well, I cured that also! Yesterday I went out for a ride and I donned my wife's helmet (3/4) instead of my own (1/2) and I could hardly hear the gear whine on deceleration! Guess I'm in for a new helmet
  24. First the whine Marilyn went out to the suv at 1 ish this afternoon, came back into the house and asked me if I had left it open last night? No...I said.....well we've been robbed she says! Dang....burgalers got into the thing throught the back top glass portion of the rear hatch and stole....her change and her MYFi satellite radio I got her for her bike and car. The police where here pretty quick...helps when ya know them all....and it also helps when the neighbor also got broken into and had a gun stolen from their car!!! They took a plastic item from Marilyn's vehicle in hopes that there are prints on it but they are not too hopeful.....they would seriously like to get that gun back though! Now...for the kudo's She called XM to deactivate the radio. They did so and when she explained that it was stolen they offered her a new myfi complete.....for 99 bucks plus shipping and then a 40 dollar credit to her account. This is a 350 dollar unit up here so I thought that was very good of them....whadya all think of that....oh yeah and no activation fee either. Spent the rest of the day in the Peace Gardens at the border with out kids and exchange student. Gotta have some good outta the whole thing. All in all....poor start but a good end so far.
  25. I have an 07 with 11k(6k in miles) this last couple of weeks I have begun hearing what appears to be a pronounced gear whine, at all speeds, if I close down the throttle it goes away until I throttle up again. I understand that straight cut gears can whine. But this does seem rather loud. As opposed to the high pitched chirp chirp that I already have which I take to be the clutch. If I didnt know any better it just sounds like it is running dry, obviously not as my oil level is correct. The rear splines have been done some time ago when I heard the creaking and took it in so I believe I could eliminate that as a cause. However, before I go see the dealer does anyone have any thoughts.
