  1. Do they still have products for the 1st gen bikes? I couldn't see them listed on their website. I need to replace my lower foot deflectors. Does anyone have some for sale? I like to use them in the winter to keep my toes protected and warm. Iowa Guy
  2. Hello all, I'm back to partake from the "Fountain of Knowledge". My 1996 Royal Star developed a "miss" and would backfire. In doing some checking I found that I have an intermitten spark from cylinder #3. This condition exists when the bike is cold or warm that in my thinking would rule out the coils because from what I have read the coils fail mostly when they get hot. Any suggestions?
  3. After today's ride in to work at 38°F I am thinking that my bike does not like the cold air temps. It started up just fine and I let it warm up while I got dressed to ride, about 5 minutes, then I reduced the choke to ~1200RPM just like normal and off I went. once at crusing speed of 35mph the bike was backfiring slightly out the exhaust, at like one pop per second. I tried adjusting the choke more and less but the popping persisted till I had gone about 1.5 miles and it was warmed up a little then not so much as another hiccup the whole time. Yes I do use SeaFoam in every other tank of gas. The temp gauge never moved in the first 5 miles, and for the whole 1 hour trip in to work it never made it up to where it normally runs which is about 50% deflection. It was at about 25% for the whole trip. I wonder if it ever got warm enough to open the thermostat or if the engine was just air cooling the whole time. Now as far as me staying warm, that is a whole nutter story. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=54034

    Pip2010

Just wanted to let everyone know that we had fun as allways. It was great seeing everybody again and enjoyed meeting all the new additions to our awesome bunch. Al and I allways looking forward to the next PIP. Gary and Ann, thank you for your hospitality, and Chris, thanks for letting me ride Micky. I came to the conclusion it is not only the love of riding that brings us together but also the friendship we take with us to keep, after we say good by for another year. Hope to see you all next year, stay healthy and warm ( you all know what I mean when I say WARM. LOL Al & Renate
  5. Im a pretty good size guy and the wife and I are trading in our Suzuki VL1500 for a 1999 Royal Start Venture. One problem. I dont like the after market touring seat on it. My question is where can I find the OEM seat or at least see what it looked like before I buy one? Thanks for the warm welcome to the sire.
  6. this happened to oldgoat today rub it in on him. today he went outside to tighten some things down on the bike. he went looking for a screw he knew was in the trunk? when he got a sharp pain in his thigh.yep found the screw was in his pocket. while putting in the screw his cell phone rang. so he put the screwdriver in his front pocket and rippppppppp put a hole in his pocket change fell to the ground. he bent over to pick it up ripppppppppppppp he felt a nice wind and pepole could see his butt . said the heck with it time to pour a cold one down. well he went to the fridge to find his beer and other refreshments where warm? seems he left the extension cord outside last night and we got a late night shower. so it blew the fuse to the fridge. so he fixed the fuse. drank a warm beer. placed the rest of the beer and soda in the freezer of the fridge. i didnt say nothing. he then drank a warm beer. sat down and feel asleep for about 2 hours.. got up and went for a beer and opened the freezer and boom he now has beer popsickles all over the freezer.
  7. Those who have added the Water/Volt or Amp/Oil press gauge set to your RSV, what does your temp gauge read under the following conditions... (Bike is all warmed up and you've been riding for a while) During normal hwy cruising on a warm summer day?? During normal hwy cruising on a HOT summer day?? During extended stop & go city traffic on a warm or even hot summer day?? Reason I asked is I noticed mine was hitting the 230 mark while we were backed up in a long, long line traffic as it slowly merged from 3 lanes to 1 in a construction zone last evening... temps outside weren't hot at all ... in fact, Nina was wearing her leather jacket and was mentioning she felt a bit cold not long prior to that. Generally while cruising on a warm day the gauge will read around 215. Granted, these are pretty cheap gauges so no doubt they're not very accurate... but I'm just curious...
  8. So rode my RSTD into work today and in several areas had to pass thru fog. The first area was not that big of a deal but 2 places later on were not good. My windshield fogged up and since I look thru it it was a major issue. Short of waiting for the day to warm up before leaving for work, is there any concoction that can be put on to avoid this? I ended up pulling over and wiping off the windshield, but it was not long before it was bad again. Luckily I was close to the end of my commute.
  9. Finally got some warm enough weather to ride up the canyon last week. Between the cold and rain it's been tough to get a long ride in. Here's a pic at 8735 ft
  10. All of my other trailers have larger wheels (12"/14") than my motorcycle trailer (8"). On a recent 400 mile stroll at mostly x-way speeds, I noticed that the motorcycle trailers hubs were very warm to the touch. I wouldn't call them "hot" but it was very close. Before this trip I had hand greased the bearings and they all looked perfect. The only thing I questioned was the free play that I left in the bearing. Before I took them apart there was, what I would call, too much play. The next tighter notch in the nut that would allow the cotter pin in, was....not snug, but left very little play. I haven't pulled them back apart yet, to see how they look now. At any rate, I'm wondering how hot these things normally run, my experience says warm is normal, but I've never run 8" wheels before. How hot do yours run?
  11. Our weather over the past couple months has been nothing short of CRAPPY! http://www.theprovince.com/Weather+woes+Grim+news+starved+Lower+Mainland/3105672/story.html I got more riding days in during Feb and early March than I have since. Couple days in April and another day or two in May but for the most part, it's been considerably cooler than normal and almost always cloudy and rainy. Saw the sun for a little bit last evening and again this morning. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were almost a constant drizzle. It's really getting depressing! Can you imagine having to wear a winter coat or a warm jacket and a hat for 7 month's straight with maybe 1 or 2 days where it's warm enuf to shed them for a few hours? I think I will feel naked when I can come to work without wearing a jacket! LOL
  12. does anyone have any tips for keeping your hands warm at below 40 degree weather? The rest of my cold weather gear works pretty well, and I've got a pair for waterproof thinsulate gloves. But after about 10 minutes my hands are freezing.
  13. lets pray this animal doesent see his shadow. i cant stand the thought of 6 more weeks of winter. i need warm sunny days to go to the garage and work on the bike. its not heated and bro -inlaw wont let me work in there till its warm enough for him to pull out his crap and leave it out side so i can move the bike around. i understand he needs the lawn tractor in there as well as his quad 4x4 but come on. old fridge in there from the days when you placed ice in the top?? old mason tools. old traps ,old railroad ties, old bricks, old bikes. hes a packrat. some of these things he will never use again since his stroke. im lucky theres room in there to park the venture. but gee i get bored and i want to get the bike worked on.
  14. The Great VR Scavenger Hunt, relegated to the "fun & Frivolous" section is not getting the action it did when correctly placed in this more active area. Anyway, want to remind everyone that it is still and has been going on, but it seems like mostly a few of us from Illinois have been getting the targets even in this bad weather, while the bunches of you in warm areas are doing....what? You NEED something to strive for, a challenge, a task that will take you and your bike to new and interesting places and meet new and fun people. So join in on the scavenger hunt and be the first one to get the new target: You and your bike at a beach. Can be snow covered, but if it is covered by babes in bikini's you get extra points. (or guys in speedo's for the female riders) Visit us in F&F and YOU could pick the next target, and win the accolades and respect of your fellow Venture Riders! Or just wait for us Illini riders to get it again and hog all the rewards (warm glow, applause from afar and the knowledge of a job well done, no cash, sorry)
  15. It's cold, it's snowy, so what to do? Well, I ride anyway. Only did 30 miles but it was a beautiful day out. Warm or cold, sun or rain. Gotta get out and enjoy the planet.
  16. It's a bit cloudy in the big town of Zebulon but the temp will get close to 60 today and that means a ride is on the way. I've spent some time reading the watering hole recently and it gives me a warm heart. Everyone seems to understand the meaning and they also have a little fun with their friends. This is a good group....................Can't wait to meet more of this new family.
  17. well, just started my 1300 v-star and ran it on fast idle for 25 minutes, only 3 more to go, since i don't believe in winterizing, i try to run them all at least once a week. we had a light snow, and there is still ice patches on the road. may be able to ride the other 3 later in the day. just a tip, if you do start them up, run them till the crankcase feels good and warm. this will get rid of all the condensation in the engine and mufflers, and coat the innards with oil. winterizing is the worst thing you can do for the internals of the engine and transmission. i have had bike motors apart that sat a few weeks in extreme temperature changes and the cylinders and gears had a light haze of rust due to condensation. if you don't run the motor at least keep it in a heated area. i keep my zx-14 in my shop all winter, and still run it every few weeks. i also keep battery tenders on all of them. if the battery is allowed to go dead and sit it will sulfate and ruin it. best thing you can do is dress warm and ride them at least 25 miles every week all winter if the streets are clear. make sure the crankcase gets good and warm, or you will do more harm than good.

    Arizona

I'am planning on going to Arizona for the month of Febuary and taking my bike with me. Have been thinking of finding a place to rent in lake havasu Parker area and was wondering if the weather in febuary is good for riding and if this is a good area or if any of you you have any suggesstions for places to stay or go as I'am not familar with Arizona and am flexible as to were to go as long as it is warm and good riding I'am probably only going to get to do this once so any input would be apprecaited. 22. Was on a group ride this weekend and someone mentioned about a cheap mod we can do on the Venture to gain a couple hp. He said the Vmax is (or was) already setup like this. I don't remember the entire name but the last word was Ram. Something about tying the left 2 cylinders together and tying the right 2 cylinders together. Might be something as simple as taking a tube and connect to the spots where you connect the carbtune to. He said it works great in warm weather but will take longer for the engine to warm up in colder weather. Anyone heard of this? Not sure if I want to do this or not, but I would be interested in researching it at least.
  23. Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital, Bombay Hospital, Saifee Hospital, Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W). The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know. The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu): 1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications). 2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap). 3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (try to use sea salt, not idodized table salt - about 1 teaspoon in a large glass of warm water, or use Liserine). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method. 4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.* 5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption. 6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc.; especially WATER) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm. I suggest you pass this on to your entire e-list. You never know who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it. A 15 year-old near here died
  24. Put diaphams and slides in this newly aquired 1986. Fresh gas and it fires right up. Will only run with the choke on until fully warm. Then will idle nice (after sync) but coughs and backfires when I give it gas. Any ideas for me to check out when I work on it again tomorrow?
  25. I am curious. I have seen several posts about gear to stay warm when riding in colder weather, but nothing about gear for the warmer states. I would like gear that breathes a LOT. Considering in southern Louisiana, there is the constant race between the barometer and themometer as to which one reaches triple digits first. While I don't mind the net looking stuff, my wife finds it very uncomfortable - itchy to be exact. So I am open to most any suggestions. I just want some protection in case something unfortunate happens in the hot weather. Thanks,
