  1. Had carb sync at meet & eat I have run two tanks of gas 40.2 & 39.3 two up. I was geting 35,36 mpg at best. I thought bike was running good before sync but much more efficeint now thanks to Slick97spirit and and Eck . jmc
  2. If ya look at my picture, the left exhaust pipe is tan and the right one is darker. I havnt had a carb sync since 6/8/08. 09 the bike sat mostly and has 4000 miles on it since then. My mpg seems to be poor. My question is-- This something that a carb sync may fix or am I looking at a valve issue. The left side has always been a lil lighter since ive had the bike. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v405/Hazenson/2010/100_3717-1.jpg?t=1273875421
  3. The '91's ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!! Spent yesterday re-syncing the carbs, and it's running awesome. As some of you may remember the '91 had an oil leak that was driving me bonkers, both trying to locate and then repair. I had Gone14s re-ring the shift sensor and that seemed to take care of the problem. At the time we were using Herb's cut-away middle gear cover... which will be coming back to you Herb... Kurt put the OEM cover back on the bike aand I brought her home. While syncing the carbs it started to leak again. So 2+2=4.. OK so it's the OEM MG cover... SO.. about a week ago I re-gasketed the MGC and put some RTV along the bottom edge. Buttoned it back up. Fired it up and it didn't see any drips but wow did it smoke. Caugh..Caugh.... Yesterday I said the he11 with it and decided to let it smoke and re-sync the carbs. I did see a couple of drips under the bike when I started, but plowed ahead. Syncing.... After the first sync the bike had a major problem with the idle setting, and ran like cr@p. SO I backed off all the sync screws and started from scratch. Adjusted the idle to 1000rpm which is carb#2. Then I adjusted #1 by ear to to get it close to #2 by idle. Then I hooked the carb-tune up. The sync between #2 and #1 was almost perfect with the tune. As expected #4 and #3 were rediculously off. Started turning screws and they started to come together, but the idle started to climb. Readjusted the idle back down and finally got all four carbs to pull the same vacuum. Ran like a Raped Ape. WOW!! Now here's the kicker. The motor stopped smoking and leaking. Here's my theory. Due to the motor being so far out of sync it was somehow building crank pressure and blowing oil out the overflow or a weak seal? How...haven't got a clue... Anyway, new tires go on next week. Riding when it stops raining... Thanks for sticking with me through this overly long post....
  4. ok im looking to see if there is a link or post here on sparkplugs im realy into tearing the bike down. with a good yamaha rider. not a venture owner. but has a stable full of old yamaha,s ok he got my tires from the guy who was suppose to have done them the last time and didnt. also got my brake pads and did the rotors. so i now know i have the new tires on the new brake pads and the rotors. bike is realy starting to come along thank the good man above for this man. well he decided to pull the plugs. due to me useing the seafoam and still haveing some idle issues and slight backfire on right hand side. well the rear spark plug on the right hand side had something hard and black stuck between the electroid and the L on the bottom? so im thinking this plug wasent fireing? sorry i didnt snap a pick but it looks like a hard piece of coal?. where going to install fresh plugs. and recheck idle and stuff. he doesent have a sync tool or know how to sync the carbs. so anything i can do or try. also what type of glue can i use to fix some cracks in the side covers? both are cracked about 2 inches on the front part of the covers . or should i use a hot solder gun and melt them from the back side?
  5. I am a little confused now after my 400 plus mile trip to the NC mtns Monday and Tuesday. :confused07: I checked gas mileage at every stop and it clocked it at 43-45 each time. I have read on here that this mileage is OK. The confusing part is, I feel it is running rough as all get out. I have plans to find someone to assist with a carb sync. Reasons: 1) A little sluggish since I installed baffles and repacked the Bag Slash pipes. 2) Lots of popping with deceleration. Now I am not sure it is a sync problem. Popping is annoying. Any comments.
  6. With the way the year was last year I couldn't afford the 4000 mile stealer check up so I've changed the oil and filter even though it said a filter is good for 2 changes. Now is there an easy way to take the air filters out to clean them or do you have to take the front end apart ? The dealer supposedly did the carb sync at 600 miles is this really necessary at 4000 or can it be put off till better times. Is there any other thing I should really worry about hope to learn a little more this year at MD:think:
  7. AS was suggested, I tried get a feel for my vibration issue I talked to the dealer today. They said it would be a 1hr to 1 1/2 hr to do the job. I was trying to get an idea if it's under warranty...nothing said to that. I also was told that my vibration issues would not likely be solved by a carb sync. What say yea all?
  8. I have a 2007 RSTD pouring fuel. Searched the threads here and figue it is a stuck carb needle. The leak occured after utilizing seafoam. I guess some of the debris it loosened created the sticking needle problem. Dealer wants $648 to fix !! I'm all thumbs with tools so I really have no choice. Any other suggestions? Also, is there anyone in the Central Arkansas area (other than a dealer) than can sync the carbs for me? If so let me know where and when we could meet and a cost. Thank you !! archeryguy
  9. Hi all. I need a carb sync and unfortunately can't afford the tools right now. Is there anyone in the NE GA area that has the tools that would be willing to help me out? Hopefully I'll be able to return the favor one of these days.
  10. I called my local Yamaha Service Manager about getting my 07 RSTD in for a 12,000 mile tune-up and I was SHOCKED! HE asked me if I changed my own oil...and I hesatated and told him that I do. He asked me if it runs okay..I said yes. He told me to clean my air filter and save myself about $800! I then asked him about the carb sync and new plugs...He said the RSTD rarely gets out of sync and the plugs would probably out last the bike! After I got myself off the floor..I said thanks and hung up. These bikes are very tough machines. I did get a set of new plugs (NKG Iridium IX) and took out one my plugs from the bike and it looks perfect. Maybe later. Mark:240:
  11. I changed my plugs, put in new diaphragms (3 out of 4 had lots of holes), ran seafoam, synced the carbs, and my mileage went all the way up to 40mpg. Recent tanks it dropped to about 35-37. So I did the modification whereby I put in a small crankcase filter, and plugged the holes to the airbox and removed the "T" fitting going up to it. Many thanks to skydoc-13 and his write up on how he did this. My mileage is back at 40mpg. One of my cylinders warms up just a tiny bit slower... when i check it with my hand...(back right). I'm not sure that is the problem. Bike runs well, starts right up. Should I recheck the sync? How often does one syc the carbs? The plugs are clean, I have lost 3 mpg somewhere! Thanks
  12. Put diaphams and slides in this newly aquired 1986. Fresh gas and it fires right up. Will only run with the choke on until fully warm. Then will idle nice (after sync) but coughs and backfires when I give it gas. Any ideas for me to check out when I work on it again tomorrow?
  13. During Vogel I used Stevew's carb tune to do a carb sync. When I hooked up the carb tune I found that my #2 cylinder was showing no pressure whatsoever. I was able to sync the remaning three cylinders. Now I'm faced with figuring out why I have no intake pressure on the #2 cylinder. Does anyone have any ideas what to look for?
  14. Ok I thought I could fix it myself, so I kept putting off asking here. I've developed a vibration in my '05 RSTD. I can feel it in the grips, the tank and the floorboards. I asked for help syncing the carbs and was helped by Ken (slick97spirit). He was nice enough to do it for me and show me how to do it. It seemed better for a few days, and the got worse again. I bought my own carb sync tool and have checked it a few times. They are still in sync. I changed the oil, I have new tires, changed the plugs, and have checked for anything loose on the bike. It definitely feels like it's in the engine, and only does it a certain RPMs for instance in 3rd at about 40 to 55 MPH. I have also ran some Sea Foam through it a time or two. It only has about 10K on it and at this point I'm ready for any suggestions I can get. I'm not a mechanic, but I can do whatever needs to be done. I am back riding after a 20 year hiatus, and I'm probably overlooking something simple. TIA, Jim
  15. I have an 87 Venture Standard, which has been running great, and still runs pretty well, but something's off a bit. It doesn't miss, and seems to run well above 3500 rpm or so, but at lower rpm levels it has a bit of a rumble, as if the carbs are out of sync, but I'm not sure. I run about a quarter can of Seafoam when I fill the gas tank, (most times), and recently replaced the spark plugs, which made no difference. All the plugs looked the same. Someone new to the bike probably wouldn't even notice it, but it's definitley there. Would this be a likely symptom of the carbs being out of sync, or the dreaded diaphragm problem, or could it be ignition? I just can't put my finger on what sort of problem it is. I figure someone here may be able to help clue me in. Thanks.
  16. is their anyone in Indiana that can teach me how to sync carbs?
  17. Anyone near the MS Gulf Coast w/ a carb sync tool I can use or pay to sync my carbs? I bought the '07 used w/ 9,000 mi on it and now I have just over 15,000 on it. To my knowledge it has never been synced and I am sure it needs it. Can I get some help. Am willing to pay for use or service either way. Thanks, Carl
  18. I have yet to order a CarbTune and I just flat out have not had the time to make my own yet and I still need a tachometer but I've been reading a lot lately about the signs that lead one to believe that it is time to do a carb sync and I feel that my bike is due... So here it is; Is there someone in or near west Texas that has a equipment, know-how, time, and patience to meet up with me and give me a hand syncing my carbs? I have an 01 RSV and am in Lubbock, Texas. I'll certainly be happy to meet you wherever and at your convenience of course. Thanks in advance! - Rick M.
  19. I downloaded the instructions off the web. My question is which cylinders are 1 and 2? Which is 3 and 4? Thanks BB1

    Carb Sync

Well, i'm looking at my 08 Venture with 5k miles on it and saying it's to soon for a carb sync, it doesn't seem to run bad. But i'm going on a trip in a few weeks and it would be nice to at least check it. So i call around the local Stealers and they want $125 and up to perform this operation. Some told me I have to leave it overnight. It was then I decided I would buy the tool and attempt to do it myself. When the carb tool arrived, I read the instructions ( imagine that ) assembled the unit with all the hoses and was ready to go. I next asked for help from this forum, the information a got was very descriptive and made the job soooooo easy. The pictures and explanation was right on the money. The only way it could have been easier is if one of you came to my house and made the adjustments for me! This is a wealth of knowledge on this sight and i'm proud to be a part of it. Well it turnes out, my carbs were way out of sync. 1&2 werent even close and both banks were out from each other. I never would have thought a new bike with 5k on it needed a carb sync. I thought this thing ran great before, now it's a freekin rocket!! I want to thank you guys again for all the great information that enabled me to do this carb sync myself. I saved a bunch of money, I now own the tool, and the knowledge to do it myself!! Have a safe summer, and thanks again. Frank
  23. Today I built one of the carb sync tools using the clear tubes, rubber stoppers, and transmission fluid as the liquid. The tubes are 18" long and I put about 4" of liquid in each. The unit looks just like the many posted on here before. After warming up the bike I connected the four tubes to the carbs, started the bike and all of the liquid was sucked into the #4 tube and was bouncing violently up and down and fluid was sucked into the carb. I finally got it settled down in tube #4 adjusting on both sides and some liquid was now in #3, however, bouncing up and down violently. The entire time no liquid in 1 and 2 tubes. I shut it down and added liquid back to the 4" starting point in each tube. Started it up and the same thing. I shut it down, thinking the carbs were way out of sync I set the three screws the same number of turns. Tried it again and the same thing. Shut it down and put it all back together. Never did get any liquid in 1 and 2 tubes. I tried adjusting the sync srews via the tach (plugs and hose back on) and could get the rpms to move up and down. Kept adjusting until the rpms were at the highest on all three screws then could not get it to idle down to 1000. I noticed the idle adjustment screw was not touching the plate. The only way I could get it to idle down was by adjusting the screw on #1 and 2 carbs. I assume my cable needs adjusted? Any thoughts on the liquid problem in the #4 tube and lack of fluid in the #1 and 2 tubes?
  24. :confused:Was just wondering guys before I go through it all to build a carb sync tool is there anyone in michigan willing to help a guy out with one? figured i would check before i start building....
  25. Does anyone have a Carbtune tool I can rent or does someone know of a good mechanic in or near Columbus Ohio that could sync my carbs or is there a member close to Columbus Ohio that would help me or do the sync? I tried the home made tool without any success.
