  1. Replaced front brake pads on my 97 RSTD about a month ago and now my right rotor has enough warp to cause bad brake pulsing. Torqued according to specs .Kinda strange.. Can anyone give me a good place to shop for rotors? If anyone has one for sale here I would consider buying it from ya. Thanks Steve
  2. Well, my first DS tire finally wore down and I'm continuing to ride the DarkSide. 19000 miles. Friday when I took my tire to get mounted the guy at the shop told me it was illegal to mount CTs on motorcycles. I asked to see the law. He shut up. First they took the old tire off, got the new one on the rim. He didnt clean the gunk off and used hardly any lube. I specifically told him do NOT go about 80psi and to inflate slowly. He proceeded to tell me he was the mechanic. Well he inflated it to 60 and let the air out, then staddled the tire bouncing it as another mechanic inflated it to somewhere between 80-100 psi and BOOM, the tire blew. We were all in the shop and I checked to make sure they were ok. Fortunately they were. The guy started cussing at me like I made it blow. I took my rim and went out bought another DS tire and took it to another shop. He cleaned the rim, lubed it up real good and inflated to 60psi 3 times and then to 65psi and set it in front of a heater and it seated with no problem. So after all said and done my 2nd DS tire ended up costing just as much as a MC tire. Tire #1 $62.00 Tire #2 $83.00 Shop#1 $50.00 (Didn't feel like arguing considering my bike was on the rack) Shop#2 $25.00 (mounting the tire on the rim) Total $220.00

  4. Sheffield Research Gtc Sr Ta100 - multifunction tester that looks like it might be useful for finding a weak coil. It's a little pricey, but beats a trip to the shop. And I've never begrudged my self a useful tool. Has anyone tried one of these.
  5. well went and picked up the bike tonight. they said they changed where they wired the passing light in from the red wire with white strip to the blue wire like the install paper said to do. They said ride for 150 miles bring it back so they can check the battery. We will see. I told them if this does not fix they will need to call Yamaha as this is the 3rd time it has been in the shop for Battery going dead.

  7. Long story short, a licensed mechanic was fired at a bike shop that I had my neck bearings replaced and forks serviced at not long ago, by that mechanic.. All this came to a head after I had to remove the fuel tank from the bike this weekend to change my tach. He had so badly cross threaded the tank side mounting bolts that the shop owner had to come over and fix the threads on the bike so that I could re-install the tank to the bike.. no joke, the level of incompetence of a person to have to use that much ham fist torque to munge up those bolts.. my gosh.. I mean seriously, what is the thought process of that person as he's forcing those bolts in?? So badly munged were the bolts that they were BENT.. After a closer look, several other things were noticed not done right. The shop owner had fired the licensed mechanic for incompetence and other problems.. unfortunately my bike was one of the last bikes he'd worked on and now I'm worried. The shop owner, a much respected person for his upstanding character, without hesitation assured me he'll do what is needed to get my bike sorted out if there happens to be a problem with it.. One problem I discovered is that the air valves at the top of the forks point to the sides instead of to the rear of the bike.. I'm not sure if this is a very BAD thing, or just an annoyance thing. The shop owner said he would take the bike in, sort that problem out and check for anything else that might be amiss... Question is, does it make a large difference if the air valves point to the sides or to the rear? I can still get an air pump line to them.. there's enough room.. I feel bad for the owner, that one mechanic almost sank his shop with such incompetence..
  8. Well picked the bike up Friday 82 miles later back to the shop DEAD Battery 4th time in the shop for same-thing. they said they are going to call Yamaha Tuesday. what I said was don't care what it takes the bike needs to be fixed. If it is not took care of soon I think its time to ask for a new bike. This one has been in the shop 3 weeks out of a month all started with 996 miles on the bike what are the chances
  9. well I took the bike back in to the local Yamaha's shop for the third time. It left me on the side of the road 2 times and did at home 1 time. Battery dead again. This is all from when they put the running lights on. I looked and they hooked into the red wire with white line on it. I think that is the ignition wire. the instructions say hook up to the blue. after a new battery a new regulator now they say thats it. we will find out?We have the lemon law in this stat I wounder it goes for motorcycles?
  10. Well. Visiting the sunshine state and was looking for the best Yamaha shop in the Orlando FL area. Since the HD guys like to strut their t-shirts from all over the place, even places they have not been, I thought I would hunt down the best big Yamaha shop so I could try to bring back a Yamaha t-shirt from my visit. Too bad, I don't have my RSV with me. Just too big to pack in the suit case and get on the plane. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated and accepted. Just don't want to get the HD shirt. Just not right. Just visiting, Thanks
  11. Anyone in the Colorado Springs/Denver area have recommendations for someone that can mount/balance tires and do other basic maintenance on my '06 RSV? I'm a new owner to this bike and haven't had to do too much on my v-star since I've been in this area...I hate the high prices of the dealer and would rather go to an experienced, smaller shop or something. Services I'm currently looking for (over the next couple of months): Replacing front tire Replacing kickstand 20,000 mile services Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
  12. okay I did the dual firestick antenna modification. I really like the look. I live probably 220 miles from the nearest CB shop that I know of. When I go on line to look for a SWR meter to tune my CB antenna myself I see them priced from very low to very high. Since it isn't something I will use much after the one time I don't want to spend alot of money. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what make and model to buy without spending a bunch of money or should I just wait until I can make a trip to the nearest CB shop and let them do it. Norm
  13. I would like to hear your opinions on a tire issue. On sept 9th as we were leaving to head out west I noticed my rear tire looked low so I checked and sure enough it was down to about 25 lbs. Tire shop found a nail in it and would not repair it. I have been running Avons for a while now and the rear was about three months old. The only thing they had in stock was a Dunlop 404 which I am not a fan of but we were literally on our way out of town when I stopped at the shop. So anyway, I had the Dunlop installed and headed out. Now I am in South Dakota and 3800 miles into this trip and the new tire is about shot. I think it will last the rest of the trip which should total about 5200 miles and I will keep a very close watch on it the rest of the way. This whole trip has been 2 up, pulling a loaded Bushtec trailer and through the mtns of Colorado, Yellowstone and Bighorn mountains of Wyoming and parts of Montana. Do you think that the tire should have lasted longer than this or do you think that it did what it should have considering the conditions?

  15. I saw this on anouther forum and thought I would share because I really liked it. The shop that fixed the bike is about 30 minutes up the road. [ame=http://vimeo.com/11285536]The Norton Project on Vimeo[/ame]
  16. Pretty Cool Huh..... Thanks to my son playing with his new photo Shop program
  17. Oh Big Family on the Internet, Was on the American Legion Legacy Run from Indianapolis when my bike decided not to start. The shop hasn't come up with a solution yet after telling me it is probably the ignition switch and some "other" electrical issues. They also told me they can't locate a switch in America and aren't able to order one. They looked at a switch from a 96 but claim it is totally different and the wires are not compatible. I asked them to install a way to bypass the switch but that didn't work either (lights won't come on, no starter) The bike is still in Indianapolis at the shop, the Legacy Run is completed (rode with a support vehicle) and I head back to Indy tomorrow. Anybody in the area with knowledge about where to get a switch and know how to correct such problems? Unfortunately I don't know how to work on a bike but am willing to learn. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
  18. When I got my 83 14 years ago, I could hardly ride the bike at night due to the poor condition of the windshield. It was covered with small scratches and any oncoming cars blinded me. I went thru a series of sanding and polishing operations until I made it just about like new and fortunately I never broke thru the hardcoat. Since then, I have always used Plexus routinely and it has really helped to keep it in very good condition. Like some other things we like to use routinely, like Sea Foam, the price has gone up a bunch lately. I used to be able to get the small can of Plexus for about $7 and the large for $11. The last small can of Plexus I bought with tax was about $11 and the big was $15. Now, the small can is almost $17 and the large would be $23 and this was at my independent cycle shop and his prices are pretty good. I also checked the local bike retailer and prices were a little higher. The guy at the independent shop also noted the price increase and suggested I try something else he had. He says it is the same as the Honda polish and works fine. The small can is about $5.50 and the large can is less than $8. So, I bought a small can and so far, it is working very good. It seems to be slightly thicker than Plexus and I am now using less, but it seems to clean and polish and comes off clean. It is a lot like Plexus in the type cloth you use makes a big difference and a cotton towel works better than a blend. Here is a picture of the can. RandyA
  19. Hmm in a bit of a pinch here.. A whilst back a local shop that did a front tire change managed to pooch my front axle.. The shop that did the most recent tire change discovered the damage and advised me that though they were able to clean up the threads, the threads in the fork end is not '100% correct' and should look at putting in a Heli Coil and if possible replace the front fork? The Heli coil is a 18mm x 1.5 pitch and no one in town here carries any so that means I have to purchase a kit which costs anywhere from $180 to $280 depending where it's purchased.. I've never seen this operation done before, are these kits expensive in the USA, readily available? Anyone have information as to how these are used, how it works etc? I'm heading down to the USA in a week or two to have my neck bearings done under warranty and hoping the same shop is going to be able to do this task at the same time.. But I can't seem to find out more about it online.. ?
  20. Was watching American Pickers this evening and they were showing a shot of their shop. There right in front of the shop comes a guy riding down the road on a White RSV.... Was it one of our guys?
  21. Well....got the Venture 5 years ago and enjoyed over 50,000 miles.....The wife bought me a new Harley Ultra Clasic Peace Officer Special Edition.....What a sweet wife I have. Left out for Colorado on Friday with my brother on his 97 Ultra Classic and made it 5 miles east of Snyder on US Hwy 180. We rode in the rain off and on all day and it had let up to just a sprinkle so we were feeling pretty good. I hit a streach of tar that had no gravel on it and all of a sudden I fish tailed and was sliding down the road on my butt like a slip and slide. My HD was in front of me and the Comm cord was still attached. I pushed it away from me and turned to look and my brother was also sliding down the slip and slide on his butt. I slid until I stopped and the road surface did not even tear my blue jeans. Rick slid to the shoulder and got some road rash from the rough gravel there. Looks like Ricks Bike is totaled and my new HD is going to be close to totaled. Damn....just paid $250 for the 1000 mile service. The good think is we are walking and talking with some minor road rash and Insurance will deal with the bikes. Rode in a lot of rain on the old Venture and never had a problem but don't know if that would have made a difference on the road surface. This was a US Highway and you would think it would be maintained but it was not. Our Angels were with us but please be careful out there.....especially when it is wet!!!! My bike will be in the shop for about three months while they order special parts to repair it. It is the pitts to be down during the best time to ride but thankful that I am ok and looking forward to getting it out of the shop for another ride.....
  22. While in Tennessee on Friday, I ran over a piece of steel and ruined a rather low-mileage E3 on the rar of my GL1800 Wing. I was about 30 miles from the beginning of civilization with only one realistic option for obtaining a new tire, that being Mid-$outh Motoplex in Clark$ville, Tenne$$ee. I'll leave out all the details, but after finally getting the rear wheel off and delivered to the shop, I was then gouged mercilessly IMO. My tire size is 180/60R16 and a new E3 from http://www.jakewilson.com goes for 164.99.....obviously not an option for me in my situation since I had to have the tire immediately so I could continue my trip. Here's what the dealership charged me: Tire: $247.50 Labor: $39.50 Valve stem: $16.98 Tax: $29 and change Total, $333 thank you very much for your business sir! Now, I realize that a dealership needs to make a profit, but that is one heckuva markup percentage. I'm sure they buy their tires at least as cheaply as I can get them online....so they are marking them up by almost half. Nice. Oh, and it's a good thing I took it in already off the bike. They charge $118.50 if on the bike, plus an additional "clean up fee as appropriate". I initially thought that I was fortunate that they "got me right in and got it done for me" since I was just traveling through.....until I read the sign that said "Tires mounted and balanced while you wait". So I received no special treatment after all. This shop sells Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Polaris/Victory. Large dealership, expensive building. I now have paid for a small piece of it. BEWARE. Joe
  23. Well here is a cautionary tale about whom you entrust your bike to do 'work' on it.. Make sure they know what they are doing, and that if it's an indy shop, at least have a frikken book and qualified techs. I just had my front tire replaced by a local shop who called me to inform me that there is something wrong with my front axle.. Ut oh.. They said they had a beast of a time turning the axle out after removing the pinch bolt and when it finally let loose, it was bone dry and in horrific shape. Worse on that, the threads show signs of 'firing' which I believe means steel on aluminum friction heat did some damage in there somewhere. He found melted or ground metal in the threads etc. Good news is that after cleaning out the threads, he's found them to be in good enough shape to be 'serviceable' both on the axle and fork end. Bad news is that it's highly recommended getting a new axle and a helicoil insert on the fork to 100% make sure all is good. When questioned if at all possible that it was just a hell of a lot of highway riding that might have taken all the grease off the axle or heavy rains etc contributing to the situation, he shook his head and said, no.. whom ever installed this did not do it properly. If it was my shop, I'd be responsible for repairing your bike.. of course he knows it wasn't his shop who did that last tire change so it was a nice statement all the same, I'd hold him to it.. However, I DO know which shop did it and man.. VERY disappointed with them since they had always done my tires. I'll purchase from them again but never have their monkeys touch the bike again.. wow.. how scary is that! And this after a 7500 mile road trip through the USA.. now to hunt for a new axle and then get this fixed up properly. (recommendations?) Goose gave me some keen pointers about tire installations, and what to "demand" when having a shop do your tires.. of which this shop actually do every time.. he saw the junk the other shop left behind, the same shop that nearly killed my front axle. Shame, they 'were' highly reputable.. until now. Word of caution, ensure the indy shops you deal with know of what they talk about.. Hence why I carry a DVD with the shop manuals on it with me when I travel.. just in case.
  24. Anyone have a lead on the hf grease seal for their trailers? HF stocks bearing but not seals. Took my off to repack the bearings. Several auto parts stores and a trailer shop didn't have one that works. Got the closest fit and it's spitting grease. Thanks
  25. Plantation, Florida: Last week police were called to investigate an attempted armed robbery: The 71-year-old retired Marine who opened fire on two robbers at a Plantation, Florida, Subway shop late Wednesday, killing one and critically wounding the other, is described as John Lovell, a former helicopter pilot for two presidents. He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, and he works out every day. Mr. Lovell was a man of action Wednesday night. According to Plantation police, two masked gunmen came into the Subway at 1949 N. Pine Rd. just after 11 p.m. There was a lone diner, Mr. Lovell, who was finishing his meal. After robbing the cashier, the two men attempted to shove Mr. Lovell into a bathroom and rob him as well. They got his money, but then Mr. Lovell pulled his handgun and opened fire. He shot one of the thieves in the head and chest and the other in the head. When police arrived, they found one of the men in the shop, K-9 Units found the other in the bushes of a nearby business. They also found cash strewn around the front of the sandwich shop according to Detective Robert Rettig of the Plantation Police Department.. Both men were taken to the Broward General Medical Center , where one, Donicio Arrindell, 22, of North Lauderdale died. The other, 21-year-old Frederick Gadson of Fort Lauderdale is in critical but stable condition. A longtime friend of Lovell was not surprised to hear what happened. The friend said, ''He'd give you the shirt off his back, but he'd be mad as hell if someone tried to take the shirt off his back.'' Mr. Lovell was a pilot in the Marine Corps, flying former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He later worked as a pilot for Pan Am and Delta Airlines. He is not expected to be charged authorities said. ''He was in fear for his life,'' Detective Rettig said, "These criminals ought to realize that most men in their 70's have military backgrounds and aren't intimidated by idiots." Something tells me this old Marine wasn't 'in fear for his life', even though his life was definitely at risk. The only thing he could be charged with is participating in an unfair fight. One 71- year young Marine against two punks. Two head shots and one center body mass shot... Outstanding shooting! That'll teach them not to get between a Marine and his meal. Florida law allows eligible citizens to carry a concealed weapon. Don't you just love a story with a happy ending?
