  1. Have new spark plug wires....figured it was time to replace the 21 year old wires. Obviously one end of the wires goes onto the plug, but never having done this before, I don't know the how and where the bare end attaches. How do I get there? Stop laughing.......
  2. Just picked up my 86 last week and it would appear I have an issue already. I've put about 500km's on her since I picked her up and every now and then I get a wiff of antifreeze. This morning I spotted two 2" dia wet spots under the engine. Antifreeze. It's coming from the drain valve. I dried everything off and found a couple of interesting things. First according to the manuals there is a screw that holds the plug in place = not on mine. It appears as if the head has snapped off the screw. How does one get the plug out to inspect it? Second, if I turn the plug it simply goes all around as opposed to stopping in either the open or closed position. Is this normal...does this plug simply turn 360 degrees?? The manual says to align it with a mark either open or closed for purposes of draining the rad.....I can't seem to find a mark on the housing only a hole top dead centre...is that it? For the time being I have the plug turned so that it appears closed (same as the picture in the manual) and the leak has apparently stopped. Questions I suppose I'll have to drain everything and drill out the screw in order to remove the plug and probably replace the gasket which I suspect is the cause for the leak....am I on the right track here?? Any suggestions?? How big of a PITA is this going to be. Another totally unrelated question for anyone who responds....how do you remove the fuel filter?? There is some sort of bracket or something holding it in place. How do you get in there? Any help here would be good. Thanks Ed
  3. My 12V plug in for accessories has died. I went to plug in my little air compressor and it wouldn't work. I then tried other plug in accessoroies and they were dead. Could this be the fuse? Everything else on the bike is fine. Thanks.
  4. My rear tire (yes, it is a car tire) on my RSTD has had a slow leak in it few several weeks now. This morning I found what looks like a small nail or brad it the center of the tread. I don't know how I missed it. I even had a buddy look for nails while I slowly backed the bike. The question is: have you ever run a tire (c/t or m/t) on a motorcycle with a plug in it? If I am going to the trouble to pull it off to patch it on the inside, then I will probably go ahead an put a new tire on. But I am seriously considering plugging it. I know the thinking that on a car, you still have three more tires should it fail, but I have never had a plug to blow out of a tire before. Leak air yes, but not blow out. Give me some feedback, please. Jeff
  5. Hi Everyone, did some searching first but didn't find the answer so here I am. Opened up my repair manual and everything I've read out here said the same thing. The stator plug (3 wht wires) is behind the engine left side, manual said it was behind the side cover. It ain't there. I've looked just about everywhere I can look, got parts scattered and still no plug. Any thoughts? I'm thinking I've got a rectifier problem, I'm reading high voltage (about 17)at the battery, although it is new (Odessey and it came fully charged according to their specs) and it might possibly be charging up. I just want to check the stator windings too.
  6. I have been one of those VR owners that from time to time had a small puddle of coolant under the front of my 87'VR. Today, after draining the coolant, I pulled that @#$% Phillips head screw, removed the Drain plug and chased the ball and spring all across the shop floor. Who knew this was going to be this much fun! I cleaned up the Drain Plug and removed the old O'ring. I then cleaned the bore the Drain Plug goes into with Steel Wool. I installed the new O'ring, returned the spring and ball to it's rightful place, put the plug back into the bore and at this point I decided I didn't want to deal with that @#$% Phillips head screw so I replaced it with a Stainless Steel Allen Head cap screw and lock washer. Boy was it easier to tighten up that cap screw then that Phillips head screw! After filling the coolant and a test drive, guess what, No more leak! I attached some pics below. Earl
  7. I am looking to remove my passenger floor boards as I don't see being 2 up any time soon (wife isn't into riding) and I was wondering if anyone has figured out a plug to cover the holes that would be left behind. I know there is a chrome piece to fit in place of the black cover that has chrome plugs but my RSTD is a midnight and I would like to leave the black cover and find some kind of plug in black. Any thoughts or ideas?
  8. I have your adapter to use Zumo on my venture, and it works great!!! Can you make something similar for the J&M CB unit on Mamma's bike? The J&M already has an auxiliary input jack, but no way to talk back to the device, same as the factory unit on Venture. To use anything other than a music player, you have to buy a $270 "integrator" plus another $150 "adapter" for each device you want to integrate. My understanding is the integrator's purpose is just to prioritze all the devices so only one is talking at a time. But the two ways I would like to use it would be only one "mixed" use device at a time, with the device providing it's own internal prioritization. Option one. We can currently plug her cell with internal MP3 right onto the stereo aux male plug provided, and listen to music and hear the phone ring. Since her phone has speech capability, she can hear it say "Call From Bubba". She can answer and hear me talk. This adapter would be something like a standard 3.5 stereo female on one end, and a male "triple" 3.5 one the other end with the mike signal tied into the extra contact. Option two - Mounting my zumo on her bike. Similar to your current adapter. The big change: Both our headsets are "dual-mode" type mikes. Tied to a factory unit on goldwing or venture, it is a 5 wire setup and the mike operates "dynamic". But when I change to her bike, I switch to a 6 wire lower cord and the mike operates "pre-amplified". So , my limited electronics assumes you would need to do something different inside your "magic" pvc tube so the mike output is at the proper power. If you can make the Zumo adapter, then I think for her cell phone I would need just an adapter to plug the 3.5 stero output and 2.5 mike input into one end, and have the common 3.5 male triple on the other end to plug into her phone. If you can make this, mine is free since my idea, huh? Maybe? Let me know what other info I can provide to help if you are willing to try!
  9. Can anyone tell me what wires I need to tie into on my 1999 Ultra Clasic to hook up a trailer plug .The plug has a red/ white/ yellow /green and black wire but I do not know what wires on the Harley to tie into as they do not match in color.Any help on this would be a great help. Ron
  10. Whenever I travel, the navigator goes with me,and she's the one who uses the GPS, so I bought a waterproof lighter socket at Walmart (as bad as I hate Walmart, I had a free gift card I had to use). I found an accessory plug under the seat and wired the lighter socket to it with only a few inches of wire. I mounted it to the left rear crash bar with a homemade clamp. I'll attach a picture. We plug the GPS into the socket, and Karen rides with it in her lap and we have a low tech way of communicating. She leans forward and yells in my ear which way to turn.
  11. I guess I'm too far out of touch to know that an 18mm plug even existed, but dag nabbit, that's what my NGKs are in the '85. I'm guessing that all of you already knew about these because I'm the usually last to hear about anything. But, 18mm and not 5/8 or 3/4?? WOW, what a hoot!
  12. If I was to rebuild my carbs, is there anything I should be on the lookout for? A while back I was having troubles with it not running on all four. The issue came on all of the sudden. I ran some Seafoam through it, and after a while it came back. Everything appeared to be fine for quite some time. But then I noticed my mileage dropping. I was getting 38-40 mpg, but now I'm getting down to 32-35 mpg. I tried Seafoam again and it makes no difference. I've also changed the fuel filter, spark pllugs, plug wires, plug caps, synched the carbs, checked the diaphrams for holes and nothing has seemed to make a diff. I was having trouble with a bad stator about the same time and thought maybe a week charge (or lack of), may cause a week spark that might lead to a lack of a good fuel burn and have someting to do with poor mileage. I replaced the stator this fall. I didn't run more than two tanks or so through it since then. But it still seems to be getting the same crappy mileage as earlier. Anybody have any other ideas? Time for a rebuild? Won't be riding for a few more months up here in WI. so I have plenty of time to do it. Thanks, Bill
  13. Hi, New here, Getting a nice first gen Venture tomorrow, 1983. I will be riding with my wife. We will be using full face helmets. What is a economical (not necessary cheap) intercom for us to use? Main use is just talking back and forth so wired to each other is fine with us. Now if possible a way to plug in a mp3 player so we could both listen would be nice but mainly just her and I talking back and forth. Any suggestions, please? Thanks Brian
  14. I'll start by saying that I know nothing about GPS other than what I read on this site. So, here goes. I noticed that several stores in my area have GPS units on sale for $99 to $199. everyone is going on about what a bargin some of these units are. Now I never knew that I wanted GPS until the word bargin came into the picture. Question is does the unit have to be specific for motorcycle application? Can I buy one of the $99 units, buy some type of mount, plug it in (Venture plug) and go or is there more to it. Seems a bit to easy...... Thanks, Kenny:fingers-crossed-emo
  15. I have the do-hicky that came withmy '06 Tour Deluxe to remove the plugs...is there supposed to be a wrench that somehow fits in the space in the cylinder to fit on the spark plug socket and actually turn the socket? The manual showsa pictureof something thin that fits into a hole in the side of the plug socket. ??????????????? Can somebody post a picture of what turns the plug socket that came with the bike?

    Spark plug wire set

Quick question: would a set of spark plug wires custom made for the 1200 VR engine fit the 1300 engine? Here is the Ebay link tothe ad:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Venture-Royale-XVZ12-Spark-Plug-Wires-XVZ1200_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em20Q2el1116QQitemZ220300794452QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Thanks for the help.
  17. I have a 89 Venture Royale, 86,000 miles on her. Just bought it 3 weeks ago. I do not have a manual as of yet. Would like to change the wires due to the fact that one of them has electrical tape around the plug. Do I need to pull the faring off to do this. It also looks like I have to pull the seat to get to the rear plugs. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  18. I have 2006 with 5000 miles on it. I started it last week and it ran rough right away and would stall when I opened the throttle...ran a bit better when really warmed up. I never had this problem. It was supposedly synced when the dealer had it at 3000 miles. The bike did sit for about three weeks before I sterted it. I addes Seafoam at that point to the fuel. I also ordered a Carbtune Pro and was able to sync the carbs after the bike was very warm. The bike ran very good a couple of days ago. Yesterday the same crap again...choppy running. The only thing I can think of is I may have left the choak open while riding before it first ran choppy last week before I synced. Is it possible I fouled a plug leaving the choak open? Does it make sense the bike would run much better when really warmed up because the plug is firing a bit better even though it could be fouled? I really think the carbs are synced properly. Also, the socket that came with the bike to remove the plugs fits on the plug ,but I guess I need a special ratchet to fit on the long plug socket? Do I need to remove the large brackets on the front jugs to get to the front plugs? Do you think it could be the plugs? It pops on deceleration and definitly it missing or out of tune. Thanks. Ty
  19. Good evening all, getting ready to do my first oil change and am pondering if I should go with a Magnetic Oil Drain Plug. Suggestions?
  20. MisADVenture HELP!! My Dads Venture is fouling the plug on the right rear cylinder.. Were thinking it could be a carberation problem or a valve way out of adjustment.. its getting spark.. any Ideas? Also he is asking me to look for info on a Vmax motor swap.. PM me links if you can help!! Will entertain offers on the bike if anyone is interested, with so many mods and hours in this bike its a shame to let it sit for long.. Thanks!, Riceburner (aka David) I know I dont post here much.. (its my Dads Venture) I hang out on Blokes Sportbike Forums (riceburner)
  21. My 89 VR has been giving me battery problems and I've had to throw a charger on her, or give her a jump to get her going. The problem is I have to remove the tank cover to get to the battery, which means I have to dig out the tool box, find somewhere safe for the cover so it doesnt get scratched, the once the bike starts put it all back together again. Sooooo I was thinking, is it possible to run a low amp charge through the cigarette lighter outlet? I was thinking I would get a trickle charger, wire a aux power plug to it, then just plug it in when the bike is parked. Any ideas?

    Plug wires

I'm thinking one of my winter projects on the bike will be to replace the plugs, and since the plug wires are still the original I figure I might as well change them as well. Where's the best place to get a set and what are they worth?
  23. Aerostich has an intercom system adpater #3900 that reduces your standard intercom to a 3.5mm stero plug for use with earbuds and earspeakers. Anyone tried this or no if it works? Thanks.
  24. Has anyone had any problems with their freeze plugs coming out? I have and 05 RSV with 56000 miles on it and got home from work and noticed some coolant on the carport. Chased it down to the source and found the right rear freeze plug leaking. Pushed it back in and added some antifreeze and cranked it up and watched as the plug blew all the way out. Does anyone know the secret to getting them to stay in? Or I just need to get new ones.
  25. Ok, FINALLY after TWO NIGHTS of tinkering with this things electrics, I got all the fancy rear running lights to turn on on the light bars that surround the back of the bike (I assume everyone knows what Im talking about). I have a bulb out and as anal is I am it's driving me crazy. popped open the plastic cover and pulled the bulb out. No identification what so ever! Arrrg. It a tiny little bulb with what looks like clear grease on the end of it. Does ANYONE know what kind of bulb this is and where I can get more??? Im sure this isn't the last one to go out on me... Also, while tracking down all the fancy lighting on this sucker, I found that there are a pair of wires that were hooked up directly to the battery and running to the rear of the bike under the seat... hmm. Thought they were going to the lights but turns out they are actually going to some kind of an electrical plug that is mounted just behind the passenger seat. Its round with a cap on the end. Too small to be a standard 12v automotive plug.. I can drop a pic in later but I have NO clue what this is for. Any ideas?? Thanks for the help guys
