  1. Toke a 45 min ride today.38 degrees but it was worth it. Did not go far but had a good ride. Got some strange looks from people passing. Got a snow watch out for tonite and monday. It will it never end.
  2. Every winter, I get PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome) bad, and end up buying bike stuff to try to satisfy the emptiness. So far this winter, I've bought: carb synchronizers (after endless questions here) risers and longer bolts all the hardware for the riser adapter doohickeys that hold the rubber fairing dampers in place a relay for my passing lights that I found wasn't installed a fuse block, since I'm getting too many wires coming off of the battery (Battery Tender, Stebel, passing lights, and I'm thinking about Gerbings gloves) vacuum brake bleeder (bought to synchronize the synchronizers, but will come in handy for brake bleeding, also) vacuum adapters and hose (also to synchronize the synchronizers) digital tach digital caliper (my analog caliper was fine until I saw the price of the digital unit on sale) 1" chrome 3-piece clamps and 1/8" x 1" aluminum stock for doing the crash bar reinforcement neck gaiter for colder weather bottom of a rollaway tool chest, to have near the bike when doing work 50mm bolts for the passing lights, to eliminate having them rest on the fender when splitting the fairing I've had the RSV on the Carbon One stand since around Thanksgiving. I think I need to take it down and go out for a ride the next time the sun comes out. I need a fix. This is nuts.
  3. For those that have fitted the passing lamps to their bikes, I'm wondering if you have any general guidance regards positioning the passing lamps correctly and aligning them....... Apologies if there is a post already regards this, but I was unable to locate it.
  4. Hi here is a copy of an add I placed in the Classified Wanted section. I don't know how much people check that section so I thought I would give it a jump start and mention it here. Thanks for any help, Harry All chrome pieces on my 2001 Venture need replacing but the worse is the rear turn signal arms with or without turn signals. Rear fender end chrome fender tip. Rear fender side chrome pieces ( the pieces that the rear passenger and rear trunk rack bolt over). The rear antenna mounts and front passing light bar mount with or without passing lights. That all I can afford right now. Thanks for your help, Harry
  5. I have a set of passing lights on order for my 2009 Venture, but now I am having second thoughts about installing them. Yes, I know they are safer and make night driving better, but it also means just ANOTHER mod added to the electrical system and another thing to go wrong. So, I'm interested in opinions from BOTH those that have passing lights and those that decided against installing passing lights. Do you feel they enhance the look of the bike or detract away from it? Thanks...I am really on the fence about this one. Wally
  6. A big THANK YOU to raceman62race for providing this PDF document for the Yamaha Passing Lamp installation. These are the original instructions from Yamaha that many say do not always come with the lamps. Most folks here would recommend that you supplement these instructions by adding a relay. Adding a relay will prevent the extra load of the lights from passing through your ignition switch and also isolates the passing lamps from your normal light circuit which would prevent your losing your headlight in the event of a short circuit within the passing lamps. Here is a simple diagram on wiring a relay for the lamps. 7. Does any know where I can find some instructions for installing passing lights on my 07 RSTD? The instruction that came with it is a bit vague at best! I have been search strings here but have not found anything useful. Any assistance would be greatly apprciated! Thanks Mark:nanner:
  8. When I bought my 2009 Venture about a week ago...I went ahead and paid for passing lights and a luggage rack on the trunk... I assume there is nothing they can really mess up on the luggage rack, but I am a little concerned about the passing lights. I don't want to do it myself, but I would like to "know what I am talking about" when I tell them how I want them mounted. My questions are: 1) Would it be better to have them on a relay? and 2) what type of switch should I ask for and where should it be mounted? I searched and saw that some have it mounted next to the 12 volt auxiliary plug. Any tips? Thanks, Wally
  9. i've posted this request in the Watering Hole and considering my request is about RSTD i thought i would post here as well. i have an 07 midnight RSTD and was instalingl passing lamp mount bar part # STR-1D635-40-00 and found that i cannot fit my OEM flasher lamp onto the special bolt which is provided with the mount bar kit. the mount bolt is .020 (20 thousandth) larger in diameter than the flasher lamp mount hole (with rubber sleeve removed). no way it will fit. anyone here with an 07 that has done the passing lamp mod and if so could you provide me with the part numbers you used to do the job....thanks....HELP !! Merry Christmas to all ........ buz
  10. once again i look for everyones wisdom, want to put passing lights on. i know yamaha has them but where else should i be looking? also i want to be seen from the rear.what's the best set up and where can i find that? thanks for any help.......BOB
  11. I'm about to install my new passing lamps on my 06 R.S. Venture. Is it ok to pick up the power for the lamps off the power wire to the power outlet (cig lighter) the only thing I use the power outlet for is the GPS. The power outlet will already be fused and I'm wondering if I could eliminate the in line fuse to the lamps... then it would be much easier to get at if the fuse blows.... Terry
  12. Probably a dumb question...but are passing lamps for additional lighting, or are they for use just when passing...(Don't laugh too hard). Also...are they worth cost? And if installed by the dealer at time of purchase...if I request they be installed with a relay...will the dealer laugh at me. Thanks, Wally
  13. I have my passing lamp dealer installed at the time I purchased the bike. I went for a ride last Monday and discovered that my passing lamp (both lights) are no longer working. I checked the fuse box on the left side of the bike and all fuses are ok. All other lights work, rear lights, and turn signals work...except my passing lamps. Where else should I look...do I have to split the fairing (left side)?
  14. After reading the discussion in other threads about how to make yourself visible I got to thinking about passing lamps. Some of the LED cluster boards that you replace your turn signal and brake light with are very bright and I've noticed the new Audi's have LED daytime running lights that are very visible. So, I started wondering if a LED cluster board retrofitted into a passing lamp would be brighter than existing bulbs? I know they wouldn't be good for lighting the path but they may be more visible. Does anyone make such a thing? Would it be brighter? Dennis
  15. I lowered the front end of my RSV yesterday. It took 7 hours, and I ended up calling a friend over half way through the project, since there were too many parts to hold and support and line up. According to the post in VR tech, it should take 1 person 2 hours. Is there a secret I'm missing? My biggest issue was dealing with all of the unbolted, but still attached, parts at once. Specifically, the rear part of the front fairing, the handlebars, and the passing lights. And more specifically, trying not to let all the parts get scratched and gouged while unattached. They were all flopping around and pulling on the cables. I finally unwired and removed the passing lights, and taped large car wash sponges to the sides of the handlebars. I already had towels over the gas tank and front fender, and rags around sharp parts, like the handlebar clamps and the studs for the 12mm bolts for the fairing. How do you support the rear part of the front fairing while it's unbolted?? and what about the handlebars? Another issue was the passing lights. I loosened the bolts almost all the way, and still couldn't clear the lights when splitting the fairing, so I ended up having to remove them, and balance them on the front fender. A bit later in the process, I got frustrated parts juggling and finally just unwired and removed them completely. Is that what's normally done? :|
  16. Ok what is the trick here? The passing lamp and turn signal on the right side has worked loose and I can't seem to figure out how to tighten it. It seems like I need to screw the passing lamp into the turn signal shaft, but it hits the fairing. Do I have to remove the whole assembly? And if that's the case, then how did it work itself loose? Very strange unless I'm missing something really obvious.
  17. The wife asked me to give her a list of what I want Santa to bring me for x-mas, I would really like a set of passing lights for the scoot of my dreams that is sitting in the garage, I just can't for the life of me tell her the bracket and the lamps together cost 250 dollars. (ya know --three kids in college at the same time) Any one seen the lights and mounts cheaper any where? Ive looked on ebay and a couple stealer websites, all about the same price.
  18. I recently bought an '05 RSTD and had the dealer install OEM passing lamps. I'd like to add visors to them and have read here that some have opted for HD visors over OEM. From what I've seen, the HD's look like the visor is just part of the front ring, which I like better than the "add-on" look. My questions is what HD part number fits our OEM housing? Thanks.
  19. Blowing off steam.... On my recent group ride to Arkansas, I started popping fuses on my passing lamps. I'd just rewired them recently to use a relay and direct connection to the battery, so I reckoned that's where the trouble lay. Then, on the last day, I lost my Gremlin Bell. Those suckers were determined to cause mischief! Last weekend, I tore apart the headlamp housing and looked at the relay set up. I also took apart the left passing lamp housing to look at the switch--that had shorted out before. Nothing seemed wrong, and when I put it back together, the lamps worked. Maybe a crimp? Today I looked and sure enough the passing lamps were off. The Gremlins were back. I tore everything apart that I had touched during the install and looked for smoky residue. I put in fuse after fuse, letting it pop while I looked for sparks. Nothing! Finally, I took apart the right passing lamp housing, and the wire was stuck to the back of the lamp bulb. Burned. That's where the short was, in something I'd never touched and had never been apart. Ugh! It was frusty, but still a nice way to spend an afternoon off. Dave
  20. I want to install some passing lights on my 07 RSTD. I called the Stealer and they said it cost $286.00 plus installation. The questions i have are can these be purchaesd cheaper and is the job fairly easy to do? Any advise or assistace you could afford me will be grealty appreciated. Mark:bagpipes-emoticon:
  21. Is the passing lamp spacer still available, and if so where and how much?
  22. I am ordering items for my winter projects and need some help. I have read the threads involving passing lamps and understand how to install, but here is where my dumbness comes in. I have an 06 beautiful black tour deluxe with a straight light bar which the turn signals connect horizontal at the ends. I want to add passing lamps but am confused. Every site I look at to order the lights and mounts show a curved light bar. Do I have to purchase this light bar? or do they make lights for the straight one? If so, do the passing lights come with the turn signals that hang underneath or am I suppose to do something with the stock ones. I just want to buy something and can't figure this out. It looks to me like the turn signals that are on the ends now would come out and the passing lights would go in there place, but I don't know. Really need help in buying. I just bought kromewerks slip on and want to buy all the lights, including Led for the rear, and possibly engine lights and want to have everything so I can do all the electric at one time with taking the saddlebags and gas tank off. I appreciate any help. Thanks Walt:bang head:
  23. Yep. First drop of my 97 Royal Star. Cager pulled out in front of me at a 4-way stop just as I started. I stopped (thank God) in time but dumped the Bike over as I avoided her. No real damage except to my pride and the right side passing lamp and turn signal. Have the replacement lamp and signal located but I'll be @#$% if I can find anyone who sells the (10mm I think) hollow bolt that connects the passing lamp to the turn signal mount. Anyone have any ideas? Help! Michael Gardner 97 Royal Star
  24. My passing lights are set to be off with the headlight on normal. They come on with the high beam selected, which is rarely used with my driving. Is there an easy way to change this so that the passing lights are on all the time? Could this contribute to a charging problem? How do most of you run them? Thanks. Jdix
  25. I like to keep things neat, especially wiring; my question for others is: Where do you have your passing lamp circuit grounded? All the way back to the fuse block? battery? headlight surrounds? Thanks for the input (just curious here).
