  1. What are the thoughts on using a front brake line set up off of an RSV for the front brakes on a 1st Gen. (1983) It seems like it will work to me, but I would like to hear from the voices of experience out there. I got a set from Pinwall cycle for $18.00 shipped and it looks like it will fit. This came off of a 2000 RSV. If nothing else, lines are 17 years newer than my 83 has on it. Pictures below. Last picture is of one caliper ends and the master cylinder end. I will need to fabricate a bracket to mount the coupling unit. The hose lengths look OK The angle of the master cylinder fitting is off some what. That may create a minor problem where the cover goes on under the handle bar riser. This is not a show stopper though. The caliper angles on hoses appear to be workable. The front brake lines are one of the few things I don't have off of the bike at this point. I have not measured I.D. of the ends of the hoses to check for a match yet. Is there any thing inside the center coupler unit or is it just straight piping? One the rear master cylinder, can I just block off the port that the line to the front comes out of, or is it more involved ? Gary
  2. Broke my master cylinder clutch... no no not where it would be easy to fix by getting a new lever and installing... The lever broke off WITH part of the master cylinder clutch... aka master cylinder 2 ala BikeBandit and WHEEW is it Expensive... umm so anyone have a spare laying around that doesnt cost almost 300 or know if a welder can fix that piece? Im looked at pinwheel and ebay as well... ALSO if anyone knows what years will fit or if a road star master clutch would work? Thanks all in advance...
  3. I've got the rebuild kit...anyone rebuilt a clutch master cylinder? I have to rebuild my 96 royal star clutch master cylinder...just looking for any helpful hints to get the job done! Thanks gunk:shock3:
  4. I'm thinking of delinking the brakes on my '83 Venture and I got questions. I know it would be best to replace the master cylinder to handle the extra volume of the second front caliper, but money is tight. Can it be done using the stock master cylinder. What would the disadvantages of using the stock master cylinder. I imagine I would need to apply more pressure on the lever, but I think can live with that. The main reason I want to delink is I have floorboards on the bike and to operate the brake peddle I need to pick my foot up off the floorboard and step on the peddle. I don't feel comfortable with this setup. I am also use to riding bikes without linked brakes. I am considering replacing the floorboards with OE pegs, but that is currently not in the budget.
  5. I've been bleeding the rear/front brakes for a week and still not much difference.Today I did it again...and if I "pump "them up ,I have good brakes until I get stopped...but when I go to use the foot brake again, say within a block,...NOTHING!!!(or very little). There's no leaks...replaced all brake pads (used kevlar pads) rebuilt rear caliper...put speed bleeders all around..Disc thickness is .331 (plenty thick) ran a 1/2 qt of fluid thru the system????? It did feel like the brakes were fading off as I held them down...(This is on my 84 venture)The only thing I can think of next is to rebuild/replace the rear master cyl.The repair manual says to replace the proportioning valve when yor rebuild the master cyl...anyone else have this much trouble?????
  6. Hi All: Haven't been around much, working too much o/t and having to get the house ready really sucked. I need a new master cylinder for the clutch on my 96 royal star. It's pooched. Would anyone have one around that they'd like to part with? Pinwall only has one, and somebody wants it a lot worse than I do, the bidding is up over $100 for it already. If you have one available, or know where I can get a rebuild kit, I'd appreciate hearing from you. The old royal star is sold, and I have my 04 midnite venture on the block as well...it appears that we are getting out of biking and heading sailing. Retirement is about 10 years away...and we'd like to do it on a sailboat somewhere warm...like the Caribbean. More to follow on that. Thanks, and hi to all that Beth and I know! gunk:shock3:
  7. Can somebody elaborate which calipers can be used to upgrade the front and rear calipers of a MKII Venture? Which years R1 or R6 are a direct bolt on using the same disk position and diameter. Also, which modifications need to be done to the brake hoses or which hoses are used as a replacement? Do the Ventureline chrome caliper covers fit over the updated calipers? How is the brake feel with the stock master cylinders after the caliper upgrade? Any modifications necessary to the master cylinders? What models could be used? Thanks in advance, I know it's a lot of questions, but some of you have done the upgrade and might want to share with the group. Klaus
  8. One of the interesting discussions that has been on here in the past has been the braking ability of the Ventures and the relative effects of items such as swapping caliper/rotor/master cylinders and the benefits of de-linking the first gens. I came across an article on another site which is linked below discussing the ratios between the master cylinder area and the caliper area and the effects on braking. http://www.vintagebrake.com/mastercylinder.htm I created a chart that shows some of various Yamaha bikes and these related calculations for anyone that is interested. There is a screen picture attached as well as the excel spreadsheet if you want to experiment with various combinations. Bottom of chart also shows calculations for de-linking brakes on a 1st gen. Explanation of the numbers shown: Master Cyl dia: The I.D. of the front or rear master cylinder bore Master Cyl. Area: The area of the I.D. of the master cyl. Piston Dia. A: The I.D Of the 1st piston bore or only piston bore in a 2 piston setup Piston Dia. B: The I.D Of the 2nd piston bore, only shown in a 4 piston setup Piston area A: The area of the piston bore of piston A Piston area B: The area of the piston bore of piston B (if used) Total Caliper Piston area: Total area of the pistons in a caliper assembly Rotor Dia.: O.D. of the brake rotor Ratios are expressed as : Piston area/master cyl area:1 (numbers shown in graph do not have the :1 shown. Didn't know how to do that in excel 2003) If you find any errors in this, let me know & I will correct. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/ratiospreadsheetpicture3.jpg
  9. who's doing another set of fins? Look at the photo that I found. This is the master hard at work on another set of fins...he does really great work.
  10. Went for a short ride tonight and went around the first corner and pressed on the brake pedal and uhh oh.....no brake at all.... Rode it three days ago and all was okay... No visible brake line leakage and no fluid anywhere....just no pressure at all... I"ll ride it tomorrow to work with just the front right and then check it out tomorrow. I"ll first check the rear fluid level and see if that is good..If that is good, will vacuum bleed.. Wondering if rear master cylinder would have suddenly gone.. This is an unexpected and never encountered problem.. Thoughts? ideas? comments? Thanks Clay
  11. Does anyone have a supplier and part information for purchasing the just the rubber seals/washers on the piston in a 83 rear master brake cylinder, rather than buying a complete rebuild kit? Parts should be only a dollar or two. Does anyone have feedback on my cheapskate idea?
  12. I obtained a rear brake master from a 99 VMax. Actually got it just for the reservoir. I wanted to see if I could make it work in place of the stock one, minus the level indicator. Got it and a spare starter relay for $31 shipped. So not a bad deal. This thing is in excellent shape, so it got me pondering mounting it on the scooter. Couple of issues, both solvable. The center to center distance of the mounting holes is different, stock looks to be about 52mm & VMax looks to be about 40mm. This seems like it could be fixed with an adapter plate. There is also a c/l offset difference 7 or 8mm. This offset would be beatifically as it would give room to insert the adapter plate. Now question is, should I or shouldn't I . The brakes on the rear could stand a little more grabbing power to them. I have locked the rear wheel by really stomping on them. A little more would be nice, but I don't need an extremely touchy system that will be lock up prone. The bike currently has a 88 master in it which has a bore of 17.46mm. The VMax has a 12.7mm bore, same as RSV. The decrease in bore size would give me more force on the rear pads. It would also decrease the volume of fluid pumped. The brakes have been delinked & it has a quad piston rear caliper. The setup with the VMax master would be equivalent to an RSV setup. Or, would I be better going to a 83-85 rear master, which has a bore dia. of 15.87mm. Or just leaving it be, and hope I am able to ride it this summer. Gary
  13. So as it says I broke my rear master cylinder resevoir just like cja jacobs did. Does anyone know where I can get one or even better does anyone have one? I am just getting into riding and have only had the bike a couple of months, but right as I get my license it breaks. Thanks for the help.
  14. Well, I went and picked her up yesterday. 1989 Venture Royale. I should have known better though, I went out with a partially dying battery (would not hold a good charge) and somewhat paid the price. I had the radio on (stupid move) and didn't realize it had stalled, while sitting at a long traffic light. Went to go and whoops, nothing. Had to push it through the intersection and a few hundred feet lol. Had people honking at me to tell me their displeasure, even though there was another lane for them to occupy. This was after a few hour trip so no complaints, got it started again and took it straight home. Flushed all of the brake systems today, now nice clean fluid and firm levers. The dealership I got it from must not have realized it was a linked rear master cylinder because the front line and proportioning line were not bled at all but the rear brake line was. They had adjusted the master cylinder stroke so the brakes would constantly drag so I had to lengthen the stroke of the master cylinder. So no parts required, and no more dragging rear brakes. Did a slow panic stop only using the rear master and it works as intended. I have a really choppy idle, above 2000 rpm's she takes off like a rocket and is very fast, under that she's really lopey. I have a set of 4 carburetor diaphragms coming in tomorrow and plan to replace the plugs so hopefully that will help some. I know I am going to have to sync. the carbs. but I need to get some gauges first. Oh and the steering bearings need to be tightened some or replaced, but works fine for the moment. Overall even not running 100% I am happy that I got her, and was able to ride comfortably longer than I ever have before. I am going to upload a video shortly as well.
  15. I was thinking of de-linking the brakes on my '86 VR. Does the standard front master cylinder have sufficient capacity to operate both the front calipers, or does it need changing? Thanks
  16. I have a broken rear brake master cylinder reservoir, anyone know where to get a replacement?
  17. Guest

    Not motorcycle related

Tonight a friend called and said his front brakes are lock up both sides, so I said master cylinder is bad or the caliber pistons.. He was blocking traffic so we called a wrecker they towed to a parking lot in a safe area. Then I notice some wiring hook to the master cylinder trace the wires back to the inside to a toggle switch flip the switch and brakes unlock. He just bought the car and that switch was use for burn outs when, I guess when you are racing.. This is the first I ever seen or heard it. Anyone ever heard of this?
  18. Looking for some info re drum brakes.....1.do I need to go to an auto brake master or will a 90VR rear brake master do the job? I have de-linked the fronts from the rear. 2.what type of tires would you recommend for rear wheels? Thanks :canada:
  19. I may be the only one, but when looking at the radio controls, and how they are mounted they look out of place. Also I dont like having to move my hand to adjust the volume. I realise they are mounted so that they sit "flat" or "level" when the bike is upright but looking at other things like master cylinders being on a slope just makes the control look ot of place. So I am modifying my ounting bracket. Ill post pictures tomorrow. Looks like this now http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc223ca38bbf00000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Bracket before modification http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc236e5cab2500000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Modified http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc23c51c6a9800000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Remounted it and closed the "gap" I ground out untill it was in perfect line with the master cylinder angle http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc230eeaaba300000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Welded and ground down http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc23cb96eb2500000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Now I used a small amount of JB Weld to put a skim coat on it to cover grind marks. It is drying now. By tomorrow I will have it sanded, primed, and painted. Ill post finished pics tomorrow. The fit is awesome now. Cannot wait to get this little mod done so my thumb will reach controls and it looks more in place.
  20. When I bought the 86 Vr the owner said the hydraulic clutch needed to be rebuilt and when I played with it that is all it seemed to be. I had spare rebuild kits for the master cylinder and slave so I went about fixing it today and low and behold someone had tried fixing the slave and ruined the housing now I need to find a slave cylinder housing.
  21. The sight glass on my front brake master cylinder sprung a leak from cracking, so I replaced it with an ebay m/c. When I took off the old master cylinder, the it had just two wires coming out of it and they were tucked in the fairing - not hooked up. Brake light did not work with front brake, now I know why. However, the replacement m/c has two sets of wires coming out of it. The two with the bullet type ends that connect somewhere, but there is another set of wires coming out that have a plastic connector on the end that looks like it should plug into something - anyone know where this goes? Thanks, Don
  22. When I release the clutch on my 99 RSV I get a pop or click from the master cylinder, it appears to me that it is the boot around the push-rod making the noise. I have plenty of fluid and the clutch is working fine except the noise. I never noticed it before today, however I did not have the engine running when I noticed it so it may have been around for awhile. Do I need to start thinking about rebuilding the master cylinder? Has anyone else experienced this? I am planning to change the fluid Sunday to see if that helps.
  23. I saw the weather report for Saturday morning (40?!) and looked for Big Bend (34 in Terlingua), and that made me realize that I needed to get going on the heated clothing purchase. My confusion now is on controllers. Do they all work on everyone's clothing? I see that the Tour Master Synergy jackets/vests come with controllers and harnesses, but they look cheap from the photos. The Firstgear Dual Portable controller looks well made, but will it work with Tour Master? EXO2 -- do I really have to mount it on my handle bars?? Are the plugs all compatible? Can I use a Firstgear controller with Tour Master products? What if I want to buy a Tour Master jacket now, and perhaps a different brand of gloves later? Will everything plug into each other? I am not installing the harness. Instead, I'll plug into my Powerlets -- it's one reason I installed them. I suppose I can lop off the fused connectors and use a right angle Powerlet plug. Unless they all come with SAE connectors?? Building some SAE connectors would be handy for when I need to charge my battery (Powerlets can transfer power both ways). What is all'y'all's experience with this stuff? Dave
  24. ok went for a nice ride today. but noticed the clutch master by the eye glass is starting to weep? and looking kind of brittle? is there a fix for this? also noticed that PO cut some wire? im thinking safety switch. as i cant start the bike in gear even with clutch pulled in and sidestand up? i looked on ebay and wow this time of year pepole want close to $70 bucks for one. im going to tear down plastic and old looking stuff and start replaceing. just thinking there has to be a cheaper master out there?
  25. I am in need of a rear master cylinder reservoir for 1983 Venture. My brother just bought my old '83, and while working on the brakes for him, I was trying to loosen the bolt on the rear master, and I broke the housing. So....I need a rear master cylinder reservoir. Let me know what you got, and how much.
