  1. Greetings: Anyone got any daylight pictures of their bike with the Diamond R 15" Slimline LED Lightbar mounted on it. Diamond R only has pics at night. Thanks
  2. While the bike is apart this winter I want to upgrade the flasher to a modern flasher that can handle LED lights. I see that the flasher needed is a 3 wire type but I'm confused as to how the canceller works. What signal does the canceller send to the flasher? does it send it a +12V when it wants to cancel the flasher? does it ground it? I have the wiring diagram but it does not explain how the flasher system works at all. I'm trying to figure out what kind of flasher to buy that will go in place and support LED turn signals and still retain the bikes functionality. What speed does the flasher cancel trigger? How to I make it more reliable as it sometimes does not cancel and sometimes it does. Thanks!
  3. I was at the yamaha dealer a few weeks ago and was looking at the stratoliners and I like the rear lights on them, has anyone ever put those on the venture? From looking at them I dont think I would have to modify anything much just wonder how they would plug in I think they are led but not sure.
  4. http://www.truck-lite.com/wcsstore/tl/new/images/en_US/LEDHeadlampPR.jpg http://www.truck-lite.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/GenericView?pageName=/new/PressReleases_en_US/LEDHeadlamp.html&storeId=10001&langId=-1 Here is the one paragraph that matters to us: “While initial production is limited to 24 volt,” stated Brad VanRiper, Truck-Lite’s Sr VP of R&D & Chief Technology Officer, “we are actively testing 12 volt 7” LED Headlamps and we expect them to go into production shortly.” Yall stay tuned!!
  5. Just curious; has anyone installed LED accent lights on your lst Edition VR? If so, how many and the color did you add? Also where did you add the accent lights and are they connected directly to the battery or???? I am considering such an install but ask for opinions and advise, if there are any. The bike is pretty close to being in original condition and thought this accessory might add style and or improve visibility. B/r
  6. HI all, I've seen sporadic talk in different sections about LED mods. And I've seen that there are plenty of different kits out that can be used very well with both our 1st and 2nd Gen machines. I decided to play around with them looking for a more personal touch and I would like to anyone interested to share ideas with. With the exception of a couple of short neon tubes I will be working with adding presolderded single led's. I just this afternoon received a great big box of "oh wow now what's" so I don't have any projects to show yet. If there is any interest I would be happy to post pics of both good and bad ideas as they roll out. As well as the best sources for single ultra bright led's and supplies. I'm also really interested in hearing about any of your projects either finished or just drawingboard.
  7. I just purchased and installed the LED Tail Light for Yamaha Road Star and V-Star. It is made by Radiantz. (I bought mine from Bikerhiway.com. I recommend them. They had this to me in 2.5 days and that was normal low price shipping via USPS.) http://www.bikerhiway.com/led-tail-light-for-yamaha-road-star-and-vstar-p-176.html I first saw this on Norm's bike while following Norm and Kim on a ride in bright daylight at Pork in the Pines. I kept noticing his LED tail/brake lights. They are real bright LED's. I was amazed by brightness and I decided to buy one after he told me it only cost $53. I put mine on this evening using the stock red plastic taillight lens and it is very bright. Much brighter than the plain old 1157 light bulb. I won't even bother buying a clear lens. It also includes 3 bright white LED's to light up your license plate. For those that want to brighten up the back end of your bike this will do it at a bargain price. I also just installed the Back-Off XP module (from CruiserCustomizing) before going to Pork in the Pines and this LED board works great with that module. When hitting the brakes the LED board flashes quickly and brightly.
  8. I have to give praise when deserved. Norm from Montana turned me on to these people. http://www.bikerhiway.com/ I just purchased and installed the LED Tail Light for Yamaha Road Star and V-Star from them. I placed the order Sunday evening via their website. Early Monday morning I had an email from them saying it had already shipped. When I got home today (Wednesday) the package was sitting on my desk. It took them 2.5 days to ship me the LED tail lights. Very cool!!! Oh and these LED tail light bulb replacement board is super bright!!! Read my review here.
  9. A buddy of mine has a Honda Cruiser and wanted some different front signal lights. He bought some that are made for a Harley. They are not LED. Now his signal lights flash very fast. Anyone know how to fix this problem?
  10. The one part of my Venture that I have always disliked is the look of the taillamp. To me it looks like a holdover from a '70's bike... kinda like the cassette! LoL I also have an '06 Road Star. The factory lamp on the Road Star is an LED with a clear look. Nothing red until you hit the brake. My question... has anyone ever attempted to fit a Road Star lamp to the Venture?
  11. OK, the first thing I set out to do when I got this bike was to make it more visible with replacement lighting. I did the right thing and set out to replace/add certain lights with LED components. The first one I replaced was the two small square "things" on the side of the bumper with one of these. http://i33.tinypic.com/2q8xbo1.png It was a noticeable improvement, but it just kind of stuck out there. It needed a little something to dress it up. It needed "Bling". Well, a quick visit to a local trucker's chrome shop got me the Bling I needed. http://i34.tinypic.com/2dv03gp.jpg Needless to say, I like the looks of tis a lot better. The next thing I set out to do was to replace the square "things" on the back of the bumper. http://i37.tinypic.com/166x51.jpg Thanks to the good folks at Love's Truck Stop and my Love's fuel card, I bought a couple of rectangular LED marker lights (sorry, no pic). These were also a major step above the square things in that they were not only more visible, but they also seemed to update the bumper just a bit appearance wise. They bolted right up, just had about a half inch of clearance at the top of the light and a quarter inch at the bottom. I could easily move it up snug at the top if I wanted to just by drilling a couple of holes per light. So all is well with these lights. But alas, they only had 4 LED bulbs on each side of the light, not quite what I had in mind for a housing that large. Then a co-worker told me of a trucker's chrome shop in Friona, TX. He said that they had stuff I wasn't going to find here in Amarillo, and he was right! The first thing i found was a rectangular light that was the same size as I had just put on, but had 20 LED's in each light. http://i37.tinypic.com/142hhmc.png I will snug these up against the top lip of the bumper, which will allow me to add a couple of other LED bars under these rectangular ones. The little bars are 4" long by roughly a half inch wide. They will mount directly beneath the larger rectangular lights and will be centered unless I change my mind. http://i37.tinypic.com/2emodn6.png The bigger rectangular lights will be wired into my running lights while the smaller ones will be wired into my brake lights. In the future, I plan on adding additional lights to the side of the bumper and to the rear of the bike, then I'll look into adding more amber lights to the front.
  12. Ever since I picked-up my Venture last year, I always had this feeling that it needed a a little touch of something to break-up all those big black areas just a bit. So, during our trip to STAR Days in Arkansas this summer we had Sue Hopper (http://www.signsandwondersbysue.com/motorcycles.php) apply a little bit of her artistic magic. Those who are familiar with Sue's work, know that she could have painted just about anything one could imagine. However, I just wanted something subtle and somewhat original. My inspiration for the requested artwork came from a simple Pilot P-500 pen. It has a bluish-black marbled look to it - kind of like clouds against a midnight sky. So, I showed the pen to Sue and she said that she could replicate that design. So, the goal was to air-brush wispy sort-of com-trails (like what you see come off jets) on the fairing, the lower part of the tank, the lids of the hard-bags, the lid of the trunk and then our names printed on the rear of the trunk lid. We're pretty proud of how it looks. Then a few weeks ago, I began to think about installing a little accent lighting. I didn’t want anything which appeared too extreme, but something which was subtle and attractive. I have always liked the look of midnight-blue, and since it was complimentary to the new touches of paint, the lighting color was an easy choice. The lights I picked-up at a Pep Boy's Auto Supply. I used two different types of LED light configurations on this project. One kind, were little strips of LEDs with an adhesive backing that came in lengths of 5", 10", and 15". The other styles of LED lights were little oval-shaped pods consisting of multiple LED bulbs in a cluster. The pods were about the size of a quarter. All of these LED lights are surprisingly tiny and bright. Total cost of the lights itself was only about $120. Unfortunately, I cannot offer much information on the technical side of the install process because I had someone else (who knows what they are doing) do the work for me. The price he charged me was so reasonable, he told me not to tell anyone one what it cost me - because he won't do it again for that price. But, I was happy with it! All of the accent lighting is hard-wired to the main system and can be flipped-on with a little toggle switch which is hidden behind the seat. It can also be switched-on without the key in the ignition. Keep in mind that almost all states prohibit the use of any blue lights on a vehicle which is in operation. This means that I will only turn-on the accent lighting when the bike is parked. Cops are pretty serious about this law because blue lights are reserved exclusively for law enforcement in most states. Probably the most unique feature of this lighting project is the way I managed to light-up the windshield. But first, I owe credit for this idea to Bryan (Penguin from STAR Chap. #152 in SLC, UT). I totally stole this idea from him. Sorry Brian, but, it does look really cool! Anyway, his theory was that the windshield would have fiber-optic type of properties if properly lit. So, I experimented by placing one of those tiny LED strip-lights at the base of the windshield, inside the fairing and pointing up. Oh my gosh! (As my teenage daughter always says). The result was even better than I had imagined. With the accent lighting on, the base of the windshield now has a subtle, midnight-bluish glow to it, while all along the edges of the windshield there is an intense glow. My windshield is just a medium-height, Show Chrome brand. I believe that this trick would work with most windshields. So, if you're looking for something non-practical but very decorative to do to your bike, these were a couple of my most recent attempts. Be Safe! Pete & Sandy
  13. I have heard/been told that if putting an LED bulb in place of an 1157 style (turn or brake light) use colored bulb with colored lense. Since the turn lenses are clear, will the amber bulbs show very well?
  14. Hi All, As I posted earlier, I work night shift and as I was comming home from work I was almost rearended by a Ford F250 while I waited for a light to change. It got me to thinking how could I make myself more visible for other drivers. I started to work changing all of my lighting to LED's. I also added some more lights. Because of the electronic flashers the first gens. have, I had to add Load Resistors to the 4 turn signal lights to get them to flash properly. I changed all of the 1157, 1156, and 194 bulbs to LED's and added 2 LED light bars to the rear as well as a blue dot tail light lens. the Load Resistors get really hot so I mounted them on metal brackets to isolate them from the plastic of the bike. I have enclosed pics of the upgrade, If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask. Ride Safe and Bee Seen, Earl and Jean.
  15. As a seasoned professional truck driver, I've seen and welcomed the arrival of LED running and tail lights on our equipment. I immediately noticed that they are much easier to see, even if the lense is dirty. So, I got to wondering if I couldn't swap out some of the running lights on my VR with some of these LED running lights. The only drawback I've seen so far is that the LED truck running lights aren't as stylish as the original equipment, but they ought to be easily more visible. I've got one light mounted, but haven't tested it yet due to fears that I may put too much of a strain on my stator. Have any of you good folks experimented with this? Have you tried replacing this? http://i32.tinypic.com/2vv9ge0.png With this? http://i27.tinypic.com/m8gok2.jpg
  16. I have the Venture Line bumper lights on my 87 and i bought some mini wedge LED bulbs #2060-0006 from Drag Specialties $2.95 @. They project less light because of the angle they sit. So i bought new lens because of the color loss and that brighten things up some. LEDs are good if they are used in straight direction.
  17. Hi Guys! I just got my new cooler rack from Al's Motorcycle Accesories (Wow he does nice work!) Now, with the cooler sitting in the rack it (of course) blocks my turn signal lights. So, I would like to hook-up a couple of LED turn-signals to the back of the rack. My Diamond-R LED brakelight which is mounted under the trunk, takes care my brakelight issues, so now I just need some LED, turn signal lights which look complementary to everything else back there. Hopefully, I can find ones which can be mounted flush against the mesh along the backside of my cooler rack. Power for the cooler rack lights will come from my trailer hitch power plug. Please, let me know if you have any suggestions. I don't want to spend too much on them, but I do want them to look like they were meant to be there. I will attach a couple of pics so that you can get a better idea of what I'm working with. Thanks in advance & Be Safe! Pete.
  18. Several threads here got me thinking about LEDs and our bikes. After looking a the price of LED boards for the 2nd generation RSV, I was in shock, they are IMHO EXPENSIVE, but probably worth it. Not wanting to spend the dollars on lamps with unadvertised light output and being a reasonably frugal guy, I looked for an alternative. I did some research and found the following lamps are installed in our bikes from the factory. cp = Candle Power. Brake/Tail: 1157 with a Ba15d base: 32/3cp Rear Turn: 7507A with a PY21W base: 22.2cp Front Turn/Running: (Unknown bulb) with an unknown base (Still researching): 24/2.2 cp So a quick look in Sylvania Automotive Lamp Catalog I found the following bulbs with SIMILAR bases 2357LL with a Ba15d base: 40/3cp (the LL stands for Long Life. On close inspection it is actually a Krypton bulb.) 2357A with Ba15d base: 30/2.2cp (the A is for Amber coating on the bulb) So I put a 2357LL in my Brake/Tail lamp housing. It was a 25% improvement in light output on the brake light, from 32cp to 40cp!!!!! No improvement on the running light, 3cp to 3cp. BUT it is a longer life bulb. Rated life is 2,000 hours on the brake light and 10,000 hours on the running light. I then put 2357A bulbs in all of the turn signal housings, but I had to remove one of the indexing pins from them. IIRC the front and rear required different pin removal so CHECK it before you do it!!! I used a pair of small diagonal cutting pliers and cleaned it up with a file. If my math is correct I had a 35% increase in light output on the turn signals and a 36% increase in light output on the front running lights. Total cost: $9.40 (minus 10% as my local auto parts store gives a military discount) plus sales tax. WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!! this is for two packages of two 2357A bulbs and one package of two 2357 bulbs, so I have a spare brake/tail lamp. I will try to give it to one of my H-D riding friends. So the upgrade cost me less than $10 which is quite a few dollars less than even one LED board and as an added plus they available at all auto parts stores so I did not have to pay for shipping and wait for the brown truck to arrive. Almost instant gratification. I have not seen where the LED boards list the light output (if you know this, please point it out), so I cannot compare the output levels with my inexpensive bulbs until I park next to someone with the LEDs in their bike. The LEDs have a longer life span. The LEDs also have a sharper on and off curve, which should make you more visible when using your brakes or turn signals. The LEDs require you put in a load resistor so your turn signals flash at the normal rate (there goes the power savings), or you must find an electronic flasher unit, at an additional cost, which I have not yet found but they must be made by somebody. With the money I did not spend on the LED boards, I will put that to my first set of replacement tires.........or buy several tanks of gas. Your comments are requested. UPDATE #1: I found two other bulbs that will work as tail lights, but not in the turn signals without changing the lenses as they are not offered in amber. The first is the 3496. It offers 43 CP on high and 3 CP on low. On high it yields a 31.25% increase over stock 1157 at 32 CP verses a 25% increase for the 2357LL at 40 CP but at a cost... they only have a rated live of 600 hours on the bright filament and 5,000 hours on the low, verses the 2357LL with 2,000 on the bright filament and 10,000 on the low.... also locally they are priced at $3.59 per bulb while the 2357LL are priced at $3.44 for two bulbs.... To me, the increased output of 3 CP over the 2357LL is not worth the shorter service life. The second bulb is the H1157 offered by Candlepower (Which is owned by Daniel Stern) (the H is for Halogen)and probably made by Narva. It has a 107 CP bright filament, and a 25 CP low filament!!!!!! But don't run off an buy them yet!!!!! Compared to the 1157 or 2357LL bulb the bright filament is 234% and 168% brighter respectively, but all that light comes at a cost. Only 400 hours service life and all the heat it produces MIGHT melt your tail light housing. Sorry, but I'm not going to test it on my bike!!!!!! OH and now for the bad news, they are priced at $10.35 plus shipping.... each.... The big draw back IMHO is the MUCH brighter running light. It puts out a whopping 25 CP which could be confused for a brake light by some drivers.... this running light is 733% brighter than all the other lamps!!!!!! Like I said, I will not be trying this lamp, but if you do, please provide some feedback!!!!! UPDATE #2: I have put the 3496 bulbs in the brake and turn signals on the rear and they are working fine!!!!!!!!! To bad the 3496 does not come in amber..... or I would use them in the front of this bike. UPDATE #3 I installed a 15" LED stop light under my trunk. I got it from Innovative Light in the factory seconds section HERE for under $8.... plus shipping. I got the slimline in red with retroreflective accents..... not in stock as of this posting but you can check them from time to time. UPDATE #4 This breaks the Poor mans tip but I replaced the stop/tail light with the Street Magic 100 LED Genesis II LED Tail Light from Custom Dynamics HERE and I am impressed!!!!! quick on and off time, wide viewing angle and it is BRIGHT, but it does break the bank........at $90 when I got it.....
  19. Finally getting around to the pictures of Mocha's new rear! I used a heat gun and carefully softened the hot glue and pulled the lenses off. Then I ground down all the protruding plastic and filled in all hols and painted. That left a flat surface to mount the LED strips. There are 60 for the running lights, 24 for the brakes, and 9 in each turn signal. Ponch followed me in bright sunlight and reported that the red section washes out but the turn signals show up good. As soon as I get out of the noonday sun it is different. I used self adhesive surface mount LED strips then overglued with clear RTV. I figured the Texas heat might loosen the adhesive eventually. Then I used the clear RTV to put the lenses back on. I think the effect is pretty good. Also, I found out that I had lights behind the lower Yamaha reflector!! Garbage scotch-locks that needed replacing. And the side reflectors have a bulb in the forward edge!! I don't think the sides are stock because of the scotch-locks. The lower might be stock. It took me about 8-10 hours of work and $100.00 worth of LEDs to do this project. The result is priceless if someone notices the bike and I don't get slammed from behind. JB
  20. Does anyone know if there is an LED Brake Light kit for the RSTD? I want to switch out the entire brake light assembly, and have a full LED kit. I find the LED lights on other bike just amazing. And it seems like a safety issue as well. Is there an aftermarket kit available that does not require extensive re-wiring? Any help most appreciated. Sonny
  21. http://www.signaldynamics.com/products/LicensePltFrame/cd_chrome_led_frame.jpeg A few weeks ago I replaced my tail light with a LED board and a clear lens. What I failed to do and I didnt realize it until one night last week when a cop pulled me over at 230 am by work was the fact that I didnt have a licence plate light anymore. I then realized that when I switched to the LED board it no longer illuminated upwards like a regular bulb, thus no plate light. My explanation worked and I promised the kind officer that I will get a lighted frame this weekend. After searching several sites, JP being the most expensive in the 59.00 to 120.00 dollar range. I found the above frame at www.signaldynamics.com for a paltry sum of 35.00. 42.00 with shipping and tax....yes, they are located in my home state. Exciting, huh!
  22. Found some kickass Billet LED frames that fit our bikes! LEDs are very bright and all the wiring is inside the frame. No wiring mess on back of frame. Check it out: http://lh5.ggpht.com/arizonakober/SAJYMEwm7lI/AAAAAAAAEQ8/cTkI9VwyluU/s400/Billetboysonayamaha.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/arizonakober/SAJYMkwm7mI/AAAAAAAAERI/JuOTd_Ha420/s400/Billetboysonayamaha2.jpg
  23. I want to install Custom Dynamics LED turn signal clusters front and rear but have a problem with the flasher options. The options available both have down sides I want to avoid; load equalizers get very hot and limit the use of 4 way flashers or replacing the flasher unit with their version eliminates the self cancelling feature of the bike's turn signals. Anyone know of another option?
  24. Snuck up on me this year, but as many of you may know, March 8 - 16, is Canadian-American Days here in the Myrtle Beach area. If any of you are down for the event or coming for part of it, Welcome!! As always--lots of stuff going on. Killer car show, shag dance competition and if you absolutely have to there's always....golf. Later in the year (~June 2), Hard Rock Theme Park has the Grand Opening with the Eagles. (soft-limited opening in April) http://www.hardrockpark.com/index3.php is the site if you want to poke around. I have nothing whatsoever to do with the place or anything, but it should be sonething special. And NO, I will not ride Led Zeppelin..15 stories, 65 mph...6 loops...No sir, I don't think so....even if it is set to "Whole Lotta Love"! Spring Bike Week May 9-18 I gotta leave now, I'm starting to sound like a darn commercial.
  25. I thought I saw it on this site some where, but cannot find it. I am trying to find an LED light to replace the 6" x 1" red reflector located above the factory taillight. I have seen a few at JP and Kuryk. but can't seem to find the one I ran across the other day. Anyone? Thanks
