  1. I need help. I was installing my wolo horn on my bike in the original horn location. I used the ground location behind for my ground. During preliminary tests, the ground was not tightened. The stereo was on. Long story short, I now have no audio, speaker or headset. Up to final assembly, stereo had worked. Did I fry my amp under the fairing? How much is that to replace?
  2. Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s): YAMAHA / FJR1300 2006-2009 Manufacturer: YAMAHA MOTOR CORPORATION, USA Mfr's Report Date: JUN 24, 2011 NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 11V338000 NHTSA Action Number: N/A Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING Potential Number of Units Affected: 9,850 Summary: YAMAHA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 FJR1300 MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM FEBRUARY 2006, THROUGH MARCH 2009. THE GROUND JOINT CONNECTOR OF THE WIRE HARNESS COULD OVERHEAT AND BECOME DEFORMED, POSSIBLY CAUSING AN INTERMITTENT GROUND WIRE CONNECTION. IF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS NOT PROPERLY GROUNDED, THE IGNITION SYSTEM AND/OR OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS COULD MALFUNCTION, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL. Consequence: IF THE MOTORCYCLE STALLS WHILE BEING RIDDEN, THERE COULD BE A CRASH RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH. Remedy: YAMAHA DEALER WILL INSTALL AN ADDITIONAL WIRE SUB-LEAD OR, IF THE GROUND JOINT CONNECTOR HAS ALREADY BEEN DAMAGED FROM OVERHEATING, DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW MAIN WIRE HARNESS. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JULY 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT YAMAHA AT 1-800-962-7926. Notes: OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO http://HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .
  3. Riding to work I have been having an issue with the am side of radio not working sometimes. But today a bigger problem the whole dash shuts off the bike will run but like crap no acceleration hit a pot hole dash lights up bike runs fine. I can start it when dash is out and idle but give it throttle it dies. Now what I have noticed is that the clock is at the right time when it reappears I dont have to reset it. My cruise also will not engage. My rear brake will not activate the brake light either. I started cleaning fuses then the bike started but hit another bump crap running dash out. Any ideas? Bad ground? Bad TCI? Bad or corroded fuses?
  4. On the way back from my SC last weekend, I stopped for gas, when I started to get back on the road, I had no power. Assuming that I had a blowed fuse, I started taking the bike apart to check fuses. After 1.5 hour in the 99 degree weather, I found the problem to be a broken ground battery cable. What broke was the flat metal at the bend next to where it connects to the battery. Wedged the broken piece under lugs and tighten down. Picked up a new end at the shop yesterday. Will anyone tell me the "best" way to get the cable off so I can put the new connector on. I would reckon it is ground to the engine block "SOMEWHERE?". Thanks, MIKE aka Uturn
  5. Trying to hook in a bypass switch for the cooling fan before buttoning her back up. I've put a splice in both the black and blue wire going to the fan but am not sure which one to connect to ground and which one to the battery. Would I need a inline fuse and if so what size? Thanks.
  6. I installed a set of driving lights about 6 months ago. I wired them independently, with a relay and switch. The lights have recently started going out and coming back on at random times. When i installed them i made sure to have very good ground connections to avoid ground problems later. My question is, could a bad relay act this way? I have already replaced the switch, and since the switch is a lighted switch, i can see when the lights go out. When they do go out after i shut down my bike for awhile, i try them and they work. I think it could be the relay. When i replace it what should i look for? Im sorry, electrical circuits are not my strength.
  7. I was given some nice LED lights. One of the features is the ability to have them come on with a signal wire, even if off. I set them to the mode I want (e.g., flashing yellow), then turn them off. When I pull the brake lever, they come on flashing yellow, then turn off again when I release the brake. Or they should. They do come on with the brakes, but they also come on with the turn signals. The lights come with a red for power, off for ground. They also come with a blue for aux signal and yellow for ground. I have red to battery, black to ground. Blue to the yellow brake wire, yellow to ground. Should I attach the yellow to the brake ground? Is that brown, if I remember right? I don't mind the LEDs coming on with the turn signal for now, but it isn't what I intended. Dave
  8. Just lowered my 06 Venture front forks 1.5 inches had already installed the Barons lowering kit on the rear. Now the bike is finally level and handles like a Harley Ultra without the engine heat. I ride alot on the BlueRidge Parkway and use the scenic parking lots to park which are not level ground by no means. Does anyone know of another Yamaha kickstand only shorter that can bolt on an 06 Venture. Please don't recommend the Baron shorty stands--- they don't have the ground foot like Yamaha.
  9. I've seen on some mc club bikes a braided line off the left or right hand grip that almost touches the ground. Looks like a long leather pony tail....what's the purpose if one?
  10. I have a Streetpilot 2730 w/ the car adapter w/ one of those round speakers in the cable. I think one of my sons got ahold of it one day and hasn't worked right since. I would keep losing power. Well I took apart the speaker housing and there are 6 wires total. 2 to the speaker (I never cared for using the speaker), 2 to that outlet that is on the side of the speaker housing (have no idea what it is so I know I won't miss it) and the power and ground wires. I completly cutoff the 1st 4 mentioned wires so you can barely see them. This just left the power and ground wires exposed. I hardwired them into the bike and now the gps works great. There was plenty of length of wire from the Garmin harness so I was able to run it down by the fork, under the tank and next to the battery where I already had a fuse box I installed a couple years ago and pick your own spot for ground. All in all it was free and I didn't have to spend $30+ for the motorcycle wire kit.
  11. I installed the LED amber front marker lights on two RSV thus far using this method and it works great.. The lights you get from JP Cycles have a black and yellow wire.. the power wire is yellow and looks terrible when running up the brake cable.. So what I do is snip the black wire (ground) and solder it to the snipped yellow wire, heat shrink covers the joint and the short yellow wire end. The ground wire gets an eye end connector which I then connect to the attachment bolt for ground. The new power wire, now black, gets routed up the brake hose and wired into the system.. works like a charm. There might be easier better ways of doing it, but this works for me.. However, on the last bike I did this to, one marker light wouldn't lite up so before automatically assuming I had a bad or cold solder joint, I tried touching the ground to different bare metal parts on the bike and sure enough.. that was the problem.. Strange indeed.. on that particular bike, the lower fork wasn't grounded at all.. I literally had to run a ground wire up higher onto the upper tree area to ground the light.. Any bare metal exposed on the lower end wouldn't give me ground.. Just happened that all the attaching parts were shielded with a good layer of paint at assembly time..
  12. We got 27" of snow in last 24 hour and with the wind I have some drifts that are in the 5 foot range. Doesn't look like the ground hog was right for a early spring for use up here in northern N.Y. Here are a few photos.
  13. I may be the only one, but when looking at the radio controls, and how they are mounted they look out of place. Also I dont like having to move my hand to adjust the volume. I realise they are mounted so that they sit "flat" or "level" when the bike is upright but looking at other things like master cylinders being on a slope just makes the control look ot of place. So I am modifying my ounting bracket. Ill post pictures tomorrow. Looks like this now http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc223ca38bbf00000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Bracket before modification http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc236e5cab2500000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Modified http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc23c51c6a9800000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Remounted it and closed the "gap" I ground out untill it was in perfect line with the master cylinder angle http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc230eeaaba300000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Welded and ground down http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc06b3127ccefc23cb96eb2500000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Now I used a small amount of JB Weld to put a skim coat on it to cover grind marks. It is drying now. By tomorrow I will have it sanded, primed, and painted. Ill post finished pics tomorrow. The fit is awesome now. Cannot wait to get this little mod done so my thumb will reach controls and it looks more in place.
  14. Has anyone ordered from carbtune lately. (since the cartridge bomb issue in the fall) My order was shipped out Dec. 17th. I still have not received it yet. Carbtune replies to my e-mails and just says SORRY this is a 'Homeland Security' issue and they cannot say how long it will take for me to receive it.........they state it will arrive by ground mail and tell me there is no tracking no.......(huh?)I know that they are a stand up company but, this is getting annoying. Any one else waiting on a carbtune?
  15. We have the standard 6 ft. fence in the backyard, and a few months ago, I heard about burglaries increasing dramatically in the entire city. To make sure this never happened to me, I got an electric fence and ran a single wire along the top of the fence. Actually, I got the biggest cattle charger Tractor Supply had, made for 26 miles of fence. I then used an 8 ft. long ground rod, and drove it 7.5 ft. into the ground. The ground rod is the key, with the more you have in the ground, the better the fence works. One day I'm mowing the back yard with my cheapo Wal-Mart 6 hp big wheel push mower. The hot wire is broken and laying out in the yard. I knew for a fact that I unplugged the charger. I pushed the mower around the wire and reached down to grab it, to throw it out of the way. It seems as though I hadn't remembered to unplug it after all. Now I'm standing there, I've got the running lawnmower in my right hand and the 1.7 giga-volt fence wire in the other hand. Keep in mind the charger is about the size of a marine battery and has a picture of an upside down cow on fire on the cover. Time stood still. The first thing I notice is my pecker trying to climb up the front side of my body. My ears curled downwards and I could feel the lawnmower ignition firing in the backside of my brain. Every time that Briggs & Stratton rolled over, I could feel the spark in my head. I was literally at one with the engine. It seems as though the fence charger and the piece of lawnmower were fighting over who would control my electrical impulses. Science says you cannot crap, pee, and vomit at the same time. I beg to differ. Not only did I do all three at once, but my bowels emptied 3 different times in less than half of a second. It was a Matrix kind of bowel movement, where time is creeping along and you're all leaned back and BAM BAM BAM you just crap your pants 3 times. It seemed like there were minutes in between but in reality it was so close together. It was like exhaust pulses from a big block Chevy turning 8 grand. At this point I'm about 30 minutes (maybe 2 seconds) into holding onto the fence wire. My hand is wrapped around the wire palm down so I can't let go. I grew up on a farm so I know all about electric fences. But Dad always had those pieces of chargers made by International or whoever that were like 9 volts and just kinda tickled. This one I could not let go of. The 8 ft. long ground rod is now accepting signals from me through the permadamp Ark-La-Tex river bottom soil. At this point I'm thinking I'm going to have to just man up and take it, until the lawnmower runs out of gas. 'Damn!,' I think, as I remember I just filled the tank! Now the lawnmower is starting to run rough. It has settled into a loping run pattern as if it had some kind of big lawnmower race cam in it. Covered in poop, pee, and with my vomit on my chest, I think 'Oh God please die... Pleeeeaze die'. But nooooo, it settles into the rough lumpy cam idle nicely and remains there, like a big bore roller cam EFI motor waiting for the go command from its owner's right foot. So here I am in the middle of July, 104 degrees, 80% humidity, standing in my own backyard, begging God to kill me. God did not take me that day. He left me there covered in my own fluids to writhe in the misery my own stupidity had created. I honestly don't know how I got loose from the wire. I woke up laying on the ground hours later. The lawnmower was beside me, out of gas. It was later on in the day and I was sunburned. There were two large dead grass spots where I had been standing, and then another long skinny dead spot where the wire had laid while I was on the ground still holding on to it. I assume I finally had a seizure and in the resulting thrashing had somehow let go of the wire. Upon waking from my electrically induced sleep I realized a few things: 1 - Three of the fillings in my teeth have melted. 2 - I now have cramps in the bottoms of my feet and my right butt cheek (not the left, just the right). 3 - Poop, pee, and vomit when all mixed together, do not smell as bad as you might think. 4 - My left eye will not open. 5 - My right eye will not close. 6 - The lawnmower runs like a ----------- now. Seriously! I think our little session cleared out some carbon fouling or something, because it was better than new after that. 7 - My nuts are still smaller than average yet they are almost a foot long. 8 - I can turn on the TV in the game room by farting while thinking of the number 4 (still don't understand this???). That day changed my life. I now have a newfound respect for things. I appreciate the little things more, and now I always triple check to make sure the fence is unplugged before I mow. The good news, is that if a burglar does try to come over the fence, I can clearly visualize what my security system will do to him, and THAT gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling all over, which also reminds me to triple check before I mow.
  16. Has anyone installed lizard lights on their venture? Trying to get starting ideas where to place them for the best chrome and ground effects. I forgot to say on 2010 model. Any ideas would greatly appreciated. Thanks Kisner
  17. Should a person check the air in the rear shock while the bike is on the ground or in the air? And I'm assuming 30# ?
  18. OK I was looking at my bike were they install the rectifier, regulator and I seen something that just does not look right to me. The plug and wires are attracted to the bottom to and hanging down. I would think it should be up in the bike as to not be exposed to the ground could someone take a look at this for me on there bike to see if it is right.
  19. I have an 07 RSV with hannigan trike kit. Can anyone tell me how to get this trike completely off the ground so I can get under it?Are there any cheap lifts out there for a trike?
  20. ToyOdie

    OMG!

Yesterday I went ou to run some erands and the bike was feeling great. On the way home apperantly I took the turn into my sub-division a little sharper than I ususlly do and it finally happened. I drug the right floorboard. In all the years I have been riding I've never had anything on the ground except the tires and my feet. It sure did get my attention. The scraping sound sent chills up my spine and I think my heart skipped a beat. Now I know what the limit is on my bike and what to expect when it happens.
  21. i have an 83 i believe that is first generation. i have no spark on any cylender. was told could be ground. going to start by checking ground and then proceed to tci. any other suggestions. bike ran fine then just would not start. i just recently replaced the guage asssembly but it ran fine for a week after that
  22. I want to hook up a dwell-tach meter that I have from the old days when you could work on a car to my 2nd gen to set the idle speed. There's two wires on it and I think one went to ground and the other to the coil. Anyone know where to hook up to get a reading for tach?
  23. The wife and I will be Motoring up to Lake George Next year for the Americade. (2011) does anyone know of a nice RV/Camp ground, that can handle the Bus? 40ft Winnabago with a 15 ft trailer. doesn't have to be a pull through site
  24. the wife and i took a ride from just south of Greensboro NC up north to the blue ridge pkwy. in Va. ending back at Fancy Gap NC. during a hard second gear acceleration i was watch the speedo to shift before i hit the rev limiter and i noticed the oil light flash on and off. i know this is not normal and i have not seen it do that before. i can't remember if i was on an incline, decline or level ground when it did this. i can somewhat reconcile it flashing on if i was either on an incline or decline as the oil could move away from the oil pickup. i ran it hard again in second gear (level ground) and had no issue. any thoughts??
  25. I had the bike parked out in the back yard today and my baby fell down. The ground was so soft from all of the rain that we have been having that the side stand and the 4 inch dia metal plate it was on sunk into the ground and over she went. I was not sure how to pick it up since the side stand was still in the down position with the bike laying on the left side. I have never before tried to pick up a heavy bike that was fully on its side, and certainly not with the side stand in the way. I was happy to find the the old but against the seat and push with the legs brought it right up. I was even happier to find that due to the soft ground the mirror was simply buried into the ground and there was not so much as a scratch on anything. Dodged a bullet on that one. Now the next question. Is there any thing that should be looked at and or checked from the hour or so that it was laying down for a nap?
