I know it's still about a month away, but was just wondering who makes the trip? Not being that far away, myself and a few friends will make a couple of day trips. I've been up there the last few years, hanging around the Funspot. Good parking and that's where all the vendors usually set up for the demo's.
  3. We were going to go to a nice brunch for Mothers Day... really nice. But we decided that $40 - $50 per person was a bit too steep. I asked Amber what she wanted for dinner on Mothers day and she licked her lips and said Lobster!... and Prime Rib... and Scallops... why did I ask!? Well she didn't get exactly what she wanted.... I couldn't find any nice scallops, but she did get Prime Rib and Lobster tails. It was a first for me to grill the tails and cook a prime rib. It turned out pretty good, if I say so myself. How about the rest of y'all... what did you do for Mom's Day?
  4. I have no idea what to get the ole lady or do for her for Mothers Day. What have or will you do for your honey? She wants a motorcycle but not any close enough for what I would spend.
  5. I just wanted to wish all our mother's a Happy Mother's Day. I hope you have a great day with your families. Peggy:bighug:
  6. i don't really know where to start this, so i'll just post the particulars, and field questions as they arise. on MAY 3, 2008, a group of local sponsors, are going to be bringing about 200, "wounded warriors", down from "BROOKS ARMY MEDICAL CENTER, in san antonio. these guys are all wounded COMBAT veterans, who are in the processes of healing. they will be treated to a day of fishing and visiting at PORT O'CONNOR, TEXAS. they will be coming down by bus, and escorted EVERY inch of the way, by local leo's and pgr riders. EVERYONE is invited to come down and show their support. just pick out one of these "broken warriors",and spend the day "just being there for him/her". or visit with ALL of them. their immediate families, are often hundreds of miles away, and they have nothing to do but sit around BAMC, and recover. our south texas P.G.R , guys will be there to do what ever we can to make this happen , and be a success. . disclaimer: if i have offended anyone , with this post, let me apologize now, and be done with it. just jt.
  7. Decided to make a ride on Memorial Day weekend. Leave on Sunday morning May 25, stay at Lake George Econo Lodge, return on Monday May 26. If anyone wants to ride with us here is the map. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=6156382184691884400,41.437010,-73.265380%3B15864210813257659049,41.523160,-73.267230%3B166334478961417785,42.612900,-73.375980%3B1581032491584921668,43.008460,-73.377450%3B10609587844854752635,43.796210,-73.205580%3B15172694592210116623,43.849970,-73.411770%3B14133594435295702523,43.317170,-73.848280&saddr=698+Lindley+Street+Bridgeport+CT&daddr=Glen+Rd+%4041.437010,+-73.265380+to:CT-67%2FSouthbury+Rd+%4041.523160,+-73.267230+to:RT-22+%4042.612900,+-73.375980+to:RT-22+%4043.008460,+-73.377450+to:VT-30+%4043.796210,+-73.205580+to:RT-22+%4043.849970,+-73.411770+to:439+Canada+Street+Lake+George+NY+to:CR-4%2FRockwell+St+%4043.317170,+-73.848280+to:43.045809,-74.220886+to:698+Lindley+Street+Bridgeport+CT&mra=dpe&mrcr=1&mrsp=9&sz=10&via=1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9&sll=43.218187,-73.898163&sspn=0.527411,0.933838&ie=UTF8&ll=42.204107,-73.641357&spn=2.144323,3.735352&z=8
  8. Ok, I am flying down this week to pick up my first, VENTURE! It's a 2000 Millenium edition, with the tan leather seats.........gorgeous. So, I'm planning to depart S/W LA early Friday morning and well, see how far I can/want to ride on the first day. -My previous longest day was 500 miles, on my recently sold 2001 Vstar 1100. I need to be back in NE Illinois by about, 4pm on Sat. night. So, I have two days but I'm thinking, one day would be cool. Is riding 1000 miles in one day, worth the attempt on these machines? I'm thinking, cruise control will be a big help. Not to mention, a stereo! Have my mp3 and fm transmitter ready to pack. Any recommendations on what essentials/tools or similar that I should have with me and that the airlines will allow? Anyway, I'm really excited about my "new" ride and can't wait to put some of my miles on her. Cheers! Erich
  9. So…after the Vogel meet I spent a day cruising around with Todd (86er) which culminated in a luxurious shower and good night’s rest at his motorcycle restoration emporium near Atlanta. (WOW! Thanks 86er.) I was thinking about taking the Blue Ridge home but got worried about how quickly my rear tire was being used up…that usually happens when Todd and I get together. I decided to call MR MOTORCYCLE in Asheville NC to see if they had my size, my brand and the time to put one on if I needed it when I got there. They had all of the above. I got there a few hours later, I checked out the rapidly disappearing wear bars on my tire and decided to pursue a tire purchase and installation. First off, they couldn’t find the tire, any tire, spent 30 minutes looking, didn’t have any other brand my size in stock. In conversation with the guy behind the counter I referred him to their big showroom sign which read #1 motorcycle tire dealer in the Carolinas. I laughed and jokingly wondered about the truth of the sign’s contents. He couldn’t suggest any other place to look for tires, he couldn’t give me the name of the next biggest city going north, and he kept saying “I don’t know” to those kinds of questions. He did give me options for ordering a tire…it’d be in house the next day and I’d be on the road the day after if I wanted them to install it. While considering this I asked for a quote on installation. He said 1.5 hours! I was shocked. I discussed this quote with him explaining that I couldn’t see it taking any Yamaha dealer that long if I could take the tire off and on in 30 minutes myself if I had access to a lift. He referred me to the service dept. where I continued to exclaim how outrageous this time was for changing a back tire. Some of the conversation with the service manager centered around how much of a pain it is to change a tire on my bike, and I responded with it only being one muffler which I’d take off for him! He held his ground, said he'd be happy to help me on my way if indeed I did need a tire. (huff)Finally, I came to the conclusion that my trip up the Blue Ridge wasn’t meant to be. I decided to hobble home slowly on the I75 checking my tire at every gas stop. On my way back I picked up some rear tires I had dropped shipped earlier in Michigan…that was after spending 6 hours trying to get around the Ohio flood disaster in Findley (but that is another story). I arrived home with some glum resignation that my summer sojourns were at an end. I put on a new rear tire the next day…yup, my Yamaha dealer charged 30 minutes labour!! After sitting around the place for a day (cleaning up the bike, doing an oil change) and connecting with some other Kitchener ventureriders who complained it was too cold to ride any more this season(!!), I decided to do the Blue Ridge!…I reasoned that I still had vacation time and the weather was nice so why not? Or was it really the ill reasoning that results from camping a week with LaPryor? So back down to North Carolina I cruised. Got to Cherokee in one day; started out on the parkway the next day. Half way through the day I jumped off the parkway to get gas, eat and mail a post card. Walking out of the post office I looked up the street and there was MR MOTORCYCLE! I really had no idea I was in the very same town and street that I was in several days earlier because I had approached it from a different route. Well, I decided right then to have a chat with the dealer’s manager. I introduced myself as an avid motorcyclist and a Venture rider who blogs about their travel experiences; I told him that I was also a business teacher and always like to give feedback to proprietors when the usual happens; and I asked him if he’d be interested in hearing my story. He was and I explained the whole thing. He was first amazed that I’d travel back and forth to Canada within a week, then he was concerned about what I’d blog about MR MOTORCYCLE on the venturerider’s website and hoped I "wouldn't say anything bad about them", and finally, he said he could do nothing but apologize to me for my experience and then added the proviso that he had little to do with what happens in the service dept. I thanked him for his time and went on my way enjoying a great ride up to the top of the Shenandoah NP. So my question remains…CAN CANADIANS CHANGE A REAR TIRE THREE TIMES FASTER THAN AMERICANS CAN?!
  10. That'll get your attention.... Just watched as my 89 Blue and matching trailer drove away with a new happy owner. It is a sad day as that bike was the start of me riding again. It was a beautiful bike and ran like a top. Thanks to Boo, who sold it to me and got me started. Will the new owner join us? I dont know....I get the feeling he may not...didnt seem too interested in forums. But it is gone now and will be ridden as it should be and not sitting in the driveway gathering dust.
  11. OK folks...I'm thinking about doing a pig roast this year at my maintenance day. I just have to decide how to do it. I found a guy who will rent me just the trailer mounted roaster. I'm just worried about having time to roast a pig with all the other stuff I'm usually doing that day. The other option is that he will roast it the day before and I can just pick it up. It's a lot more expensive that way though. The other small detail is that I have never done one before. Anybody here with any pig roasting experience that will be there to lend a hand? I am thinking about a 125 pound pig (dressed weight) and understand that it will take maybe 10 hours. That means I would have to start it VERY early in the morning if we hope to eat by 3:00 or so.
  12. Anyone form the Atlanta, Birmingham, Montgomery area going to Freebirds for Maintainence Day, and want to ride up together. After leaving Atlanta area will be heading up to NC to hook up with Muffinman and that crew to ride up............

  14. Well...I went out this morning to ride to work...get on the mike thinking that it needs to be washed (to busy riding) and as I am getting ready to fire her up....I feel something give and over she goes...a controlled decent! My kickstand broke! Both the bolt and the kickstand itself! What miserable thing to happen at the being in the day!!! So now I am on a hunt for a kickstand...anyone got one that will look good on a fast, red 84???
  15. Well got started on her late, due to Artic trip and freighter generator overhauls, but I finally got into the tranny on Sat 29 Mar 08, and turned the key and test rode her Wed 09 Apr 08. All told the job took me 43 hours, split into 7 days of actually in the garage. Spent some time waiting for parts, 5 days for a bearing retainer clip screw. Broke when taking it out, and ordered replacement, actually still haven't got it yet. After 3 days I went to a Nut and Bolt supplier we deal with through work and purchased 3 new, allen wrench instead of philips head, flat heads. Much nicer than the originals, and way easier to torque in, no impact driver. The last day was a bugger, after all the sweat and grief getting the drivers floor boards installed, terminating the brake and shifter linkages, when I took her for the test ride, I'd put the shifter linkage clamp on 180 degrees out, so she was shifting 1 up, and 4 down, LOL, well it was 0300 in the morning. Flipped it the next afternoon, and took her out for another run, much better. All in all I'm glad I tackled it, got to know my ride very intimately, and the cost savings over having a shop do it were huge. Wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is not confident in there mechanical abilities to tackle it alone. The only help I had was the day I pulled the engine out, and a couple hours help the day I put it back in, all the rest was solo, just me and the ride in the garage. I would offer my help to any members in my area who ever try and tackle this one though. Having someone who's done it would definately make life a lot easier. See you on the black top. Ozzie:cool10:

    Recycle Bin

The thought for the day - - If you delete your Recycle Bin - - - Where does it go?
  17. I've seen a lot of you mention that you will be coming to Maintenance day but many of you have not signed up on the calendar. Please do so. It really helps me to determine how much food I'm going to need. This link will take you right to the calendar page where you can register. Even if you are a "maybe".....let me know. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=73&day=2008-6-7&c=1

    No Demos To Ride (Arghhh)

Is this something new in the industry ? I went to 2 different Yamaha dealerships to hopefully test drive an RSV, and they had absolutely none in the showroom, however, there were 2 being held at their warehouse. Last new bike I bought (1999) the dealer handed me a set of keys and said "have fun". I actually bought the bike after the test drive. I don't think I'd buy a bike unless I could test drive it first, maybe I'm a minority in that aspect. Maybe I never will get my RSV. Oh well, that's my rant for the day. Ya'll have a nice day and ride safe. -Dean-
  19. in 3 days, it's only 2 months til .................... MAINTENANCE DAY!!!

  21. Economy forecasters are like weather men they seldom get it right.I know one thing keeping the family budget afloat is getting harder to do.These waves of recession are getting high and some say a depression is just off the port bow.Now some joker just said the stock market will hit 16000 by years end and it's smooth sailing. My bills are still paid on time and I put more trust in my computers 100 day budget forecast then anything but prices just keep going up.My kids are having it worse with the oldest daughter fighting to stay in college with two mouths to feed and the future son-n-law currently between jobs. We meet a man the other day who was building a new 4 bedroom log house for his wife. She left him and now he lives all alone. The house is almost finished but he lost his desire to complete it.He has chose to live life as a hermit. He has no electricity, running water, telephone, etc. He says he is debt free and just decided to live with no monthly bills. You might say he is permanently camped out along the river bank. Once in a while someone will stop by with some news of whats happening in the world. This brings a whole new meaning to still having room in the budget for a few more cuts.
  22. .... and buy the Second Gen I just posted in the classifieds. Great bike and I'm really going to miss it, but there aren't enough hours in the day anymore. I would love to see Yammer Dan pick it up, but I know he can't handle that kind of power ! !
  23. Hi Folks, I'am going to work today At 1600 to midnite. This will be my last day since I will be retired after midnite. It,s been a long time coming but worth the wait ."Let the Good Times Roll".There will be lots of time to Bike after the weather gets good. The wife and I are looking forward to meeting a lot of Good people In Kitchener.Till then Take care and God Bless. BUCKY THOMPSON
  24. Spring is in the air and riding season is here ( at least in South Texas ). Last week the wife and I went up to Wimberly for a day trip. Round trip we put about 500 miles on the bike. The trip up was fine but the ride back I started getting sore. Even a 2 hour stop in San Antonio for dinner on the river walk didn't offer any real relief. Wifey did't complain much because all she had to do was sit there and look pretty. Which brings us to the meat and pataos of this thread... I' considering an aftermarket seat. I had a '01 Roadstar and I put a Mustang seat on it. It greatly improved the comfort. Turned the bike from a 45 mile a day ride to a 300 mile a day ride. However, Mustang does not make a seat for my Venture. You would think that they would considering the popularity of this bike. So that limits me. I'm thinking Corbin, but I've never had one before. If any one has any experience with them please let me know.
