  1. I have a ring problem with my 83 xvz12. Starting new thread on this. I put #2 cylinder at TDC and pressurized ( 5 to10 PSI) on that cylinder and could hear the air at the oil filler spout. Rechecked the compression on all cylinders and had 180psi on #1 , 80psi on #2, 150psi on #3 and 110psi on #4. By the time I buy new rings, gaskets, rework heads, check valve adjustment, etc.. It looks like I might be better to purchase used engine off Ebay and change out. I've spent too much time and hours on this bike to give up. The mechanic I had look at it recommended just keep riding it. It starts OK but when idleing will stumble several times and die and when under 3000RPM accelerating the engine belches several times. I've already replace plugs, wires and caps, new aftermarket TCI, replaced battery cables, repair brakes, new Deka battery, etc. Looking for some advice or really good deal on engine.
  2. I need to replace the battery in my 83 Venture . I see there are many choices for battery types, AGM, Dry cell, Lithium and traditional wet cell. I find so much information on them I can't put it all together. I really don't want another wet cell so I'm looking to go to something else. What are the advantages / disadvantages of each and what are your opinions for the best battery at the best price. I plan to keep the battery in the stock location and position.
  3. What kind of life people are getting out of the Odyssey batteries? I've had mine a little over 5 years now and I'm wondering I if I should start thinking of replacing it. It's always on a battery tender and it's given me no indication it's going to fail but you never no.
  4. Went to drop something of on the bike, it started just fine in the (AC-ed) garage, drove about 15 miles and when i got done with my errand, it acted as though the battery was dying, forgot to raise the kick stand and she would barely turn over. Had to roll it of to start and the voltmeter just barely touched the top of the "12" at 3500-4000RPM. Temp was at the top of the green too, but at 95 degrees on new blacktop I kinda doubt that is an issue. so before i start tearing into anything i thought I'd ask for opinions. I have the new RR from the last group buy mounted on top of the airbox. I have the stator wired straight into the harness. I do have a new stator if need be. All running lights and brake/tail are LED. Headlight is modified to the two bulb system. No blown fuses I can find. Battery shows 12.87 off and running at 3K 13.8 +/- (at the battery terminals) It would seem there is no problem, but I don't want to get stuck and lose my new job.
  5. I am thrilled! I had an 86 Venture Royal 12 years ago. This past weekend, after a very long wait I got an 89. Having some issues with it. When I bought it last weekend the leveling system worked. Now, with it in accesory position I am getting an E4 code. I took the trunk off and have access to the system. I cleaned the rubber piece with the foam in it. Nothing, all I get is a click every 15 to 20 seconds. I sure hope the system didn't go, it looks really expensive to repair. Any ideas? Can I use the bike if this is not working? Next issue; the battery symbol is lite on the monitor screen. The owner tells me the battery is new. The bike starts just fine. Any ideas? Thank you so much to whoever helps. I am grateful and can't wait to get this beauty on the road. Ed
  6. I am about to get a zumo model gps. My question is could I wire the given chord to my battery tender chord using the proper adapter? I was thinking of doing this to avoid making extra connections to the battery.
  7. Battery on my 03 decided it was going on permanent disability, so I went in search of a new Deka ETX20L AGM battery. This is generally accepted as the one at the top of the heap as far as batteries for the 1800 are concerned. American made, maintenance free AGM, high CCA, one year warranty. Wanted to let you all know that I found what appears to be the best price at Tri-State Battery Warehouse online. It is $77.95 including shipping. Ordered first thing this morning, already have confirmation of the order, I'll let you know how fast they ship. http://www.tristatebattery.com/product_info.php?products_id=981 Joe
  8. For almost a year my battery goes down after a couple of days of not riding. I have added running lights, led tail lights, air horn, auxilary plug in and maybe a couple more items over time. I don't know whats drawing the battery down and an electrician I ain't. How can I test to see what is causing this problem?
  9. What is the best and baddest(cold cranking amps) battery I can put in my 84 Ventura?
  10. It's not a Venture but I am hoping someone has experience with these bikes. The problem; The battery goes dead and the engine dies. It happens faster if the headlight is on. The system. 1971 Honda SL125. A 6 volt balanced charging system (rectifier but no regulator). It has a four wire rectifier. Two from the stator, one battery neg and one battery pos. it has a two step 3 wire stator. White stator wire goes to headlight switch and activates second step of stator and is switched to the yellow wire when the headlight is on. The yellow wire, first step, goes to the rectifier. The pink wire goes to the rectifier and is common to the white and yellow. What we have done: We resistance checked the stator. Leg 1-0.3 ohm Leg 2-1.7 ohm. No continuity to ground. AC output out of stator leg 1 7.5 to 9.5 volts AC at rectifier. Leg 2 7.5 to 9.5 volts AC at rectifier. Diode check rectifier front .350 volts to energize, back open on all 4 diodes. Disassemble selenium rectifier and clean all connections just in case. Perform voltage drop on positive and ground wires to the battery. Resolution. The problem is not resolved. We have 6.3 volts 0.1 to 0.9 amp at the battery running and 5.91 volts and falling with -2.1 amp with the headlight on. Questions: Is stator resistance ok? Honda does not publish a spec. Is stator AC output voltage 8-9 volts ok for a 6 volt balanced system? Can the rectifier diodes test good and it still be bad? Any ideas? Plan; Our current plan is to wire in a rectifier from an automobile alternator and see what happens. Anything else we can try? Thanks Mike
  11. On the way back from my SC last weekend, I stopped for gas, when I started to get back on the road, I had no power. Assuming that I had a blowed fuse, I started taking the bike apart to check fuses. After 1.5 hour in the 99 degree weather, I found the problem to be a broken ground battery cable. What broke was the flat metal at the bend next to where it connects to the battery. Wedged the broken piece under lugs and tighten down. Picked up a new end at the shop yesterday. Will anyone tell me the "best" way to get the cable off so I can put the new connector on. I would reckon it is ground to the engine block "SOMEWHERE?". Thanks, MIKE aka Uturn
  12. Trying to hook in a bypass switch for the cooling fan before buttoning her back up. I've put a splice in both the black and blue wire going to the fan but am not sure which one to connect to ground and which one to the battery. Would I need a inline fuse and if so what size? Thanks.
  13. Just looking to hear from some of the electrical gurus out here. Monkey Boy's '90 is having a charging issue and I went to check it out today. I did an AC voltage test on the stator and wanted to make sure I did it correctly. Bike running, negative lead of multimeter directly on the negative battery post. Tested each leg of the 3 wires and came up with 4 VAC on 1, 6.1 VAC on the 2nd and 11 VAC on the 3rd. In my head this is a bad stator that needs to be replaced, I'm just wanting to confirm this with more educated electrical brains. The battery was fully charged and installed right before I did the test....give me your opinions.
  14. I recently purchased a 1st Gen 1988 Venture with 39,000 miles. I have a few questions if someone has the time to answer (and I hope I'm putting this post in the right place). 1) Air ride system is not functioning. The old owner purchased the bike as is, and somewhere along the way, someone put inflation points so you can hook up to an air compressor or pump to inflate the front and rear. When I flip the key to ACC, the electronics seem to work fine and give me an E4 (obviously), so I'm guessing it may be the compressor? Both front and rear hold air for several days before leaking out. Question: Can someone give me the short version of how the system works and possible fixes to it? Where is the compressor located? What is the path for the air lines and how they connect? Is the air going into the forks and shock in the rear? 2) Installed new replacement battery, that was the exact battery the previous owner had put on the bike from Walmart. It had the same model number and hole to put the sensor in. The sensor / warning system was working fine (no battery warning message on console) until I replaced the battery and reinstalled it. Seemed pretty straight forward lol, just put it in the hole..... Question: Where did I go wrong and how do I fix it (the warning light will drive me nuts). 3) Between about 2000 rpm and 3500 rpm during accelleration my bike sounds like it's full of pissed off crickets, lol. I've read on here about replacing a clutch basket to quiet it down. I just want to make sure the bike is not wearing gears or something. Question: If I decide I can live with the pissed off crickets, is anything going to break on the bike? Otherwise seems to run like a champ. Whew! Sorry so many questions! Thanks in advance! Shane
  15. A friend of mine has a 84 Venture that he has an electrical problem with. His battery died so he bought a new one and everything was fine. He left the key on and killed the new battery.....this is when the problem started....he decided to boost it with his truck and while the cables were hooked to the truck his helper struck the handle bar with the positive cable....the negative was hooked to the battery and the key was turned on. Now everything works....lights - horn etc but the starter won't engage....no offer at all. He has checked all the fuses and all appears fine. Sooooooooo any ideas? Keith
  16. It never fails. At least for me. Murphy rears his ugly head again. Every year that we start a vacation week, something ALWAYS happens. It was bad enough that we wont be able to make MD this time again for various reasons, but....since were off anyway lets take a nice convertible top down drive along A1A at night. Great views, cool breezes and a nice restaurant in St Augustine. Get in the car and Click, click, click, click.......Battery dead. Just over 1 year old. Glad I had a 3 year free replacement warranty on it. On a Chrysler Sebring Convertible its a real big pain to swap batteries. You have to jack up and remove left front wheel and inner fender well to access the battery. Forgot to chock the rear wheels..(murphy is still lurking) Car starts to roll down the driveway as im laying under the front jacking up the floor jack. OH S***. Im holding on the jack while laying on my back, trying to turn the handle to let it back down. No such luck. Arm wants to pull out of its socket. And its still rolling downhill. I give it all I have and stop the car. Yell for the wife who is inside and cant hear me. (Murphy, you low life Ba*****!) One more hard twist on the jack handle and down it comes, finally. WHEW!! A few more inches and it would have hit a steeper part of the driveway and im sure my neighbor across the street would have wanted to know why my car is in her driveway. Now im laying on the hot concrete surface, my shoulder is throbbing, my knee is torqued wrong and its about 93 degrees out. After 10 minutes, im back up...drink 2 bottles of cold water and back at it. Remove inner front fender well to access the battery. Take it to the store for my free exchange. Had the wrong receipt. Had the one for my Trailblazer, but luckily they had purchase records in their system (Orielly auto). (wait, hes Irish too, maybe related to Murphy) After 20 minutes, I walk out with a new battery, install it, put it all back together, check with DMM and all is well again. Just a bad battery. This has happened before as well with other vacations. One year it was the water heater leaking. Still had warranty left so it was a freebie, but I still wasted a vacation day fooling with it. Another time it was the bikes battery. And so on..... Murphy has a way of popping up at the most inopportune times. Id say I hate the Irish but my wife is Irish, so....... But one thing is true...Murphy is a real #@$%#&*%$#@
  17. Went for a ride on Sat, and shut the bike down when I got home to the driveway. Opened the garage door and started the bike to pull it in. Got the bike in place, shut it down and then immediately tried to re-start it. I got a series of clicks and then all the electical shut down. No headlights, no spedo display, nothing. Waited ~20 seconds trying to think what the issue was, and then, all the electrical (including headlights) came back on. Trying to start it at that point, once again gave me the clicking noises and an electrical shut down. Waited another 20 seconds and once again, all the electrical returned (including headlights). I have passing lamps on the bikes and a Stebel air horn with a relay. No other electrical mods. Any ideas on what the issue may be? The dealer replaced the battery when I bought it the bike used in 2009. Claims he put a new battery in it, which would make this the 3rd season on the battery. I run ~10k miles a year, mostly in 1hr rides. I searched the forum for similar posts, but didn't find anything relating these specific symptoms. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions. Heading to Americade in 2 weeks, would like to get this issue resolved ASAP. Bob
  18. So, Tom called me from work and said the battery on the 86 Royale was dead. He claims he didn't leave the key in it or on, that he locks the forks. So, I have some questions, does this bike have an alternator or the equiv? Where is the battery? I don't want to start taking body panels off to find it and I have not found battery location in the manual yet (searching on the computer is tedious). I'll be getting his bike a battery tender, as he uses the radio every time he rides and if the BRAND NEW battery isn't holding up there is either something draining it slowly or it isn't charging when he rides. Thanks! PS, my 16 year old daughter just completed an MSF course this weekend. The instructor said she is the most aggressive girl he has ever taught. She did very well, passed, and I didn't even have heart palpitations watching her! Which is big for me.
  19. I installed a Stebel air horn last year and worked fine up until last November. All of a sudden, it quit working. It will work if I direct connect it to the battery to test it. Rechecked connections and replaced air horn relay. Still nothing when I hit the horn button. The front horn still works. Any suggestions?
  20. Hi, I have an '07 RSV and after about 4 rides this spring the battery is almost dead. I purchased the bike used in August of '09 and so the last 2 winters it's been on a Battery Tender Junior. I went to go for a ride yesterday but it wouldn't turn over so I cleaned and tightened the battery connections under the seat and left it on the BTJ overnight but when I tried to start it the AM the lights come on but the battery only seems to have enough power to engage the starter but not turn the engine over. Thanks
  21. A little over three months after she went into the shop, I rode Roxie home tonight. If you haven't followed the saga, she broke a rod, which then broke out of the crankcase. Because this is so exceedingly rare, there was an initial delay on how to process it. Then there was slow work as parts were measured, ordered, and then more measurements and orders. Three months is a long time when you miss your entire Spring riding season. As of now, the repair is being covered under warranty. The dealer has had problems in the past with getting paid (warranty authorisation revoked after the fact), and hasn't been paid on this repair yet. Payment generally lags repair completion by several days, and it is longer than that already. Rather than hold Roxie hostage, she has been released into my custody. The dealer said they couldn't figure out why the battery gauge wasn't working. I reckoned I could figure that out, so I rode away. Happiness! Owen saw her idling last week. He reported that they were tracking down some popping on deceleration. I thought that explained the delay, but I suspect that it was all about the lagging payment. Because, she popped like a mis-timed Harley on the way home. I need to ask my wife if she saw flames coming out the tailpipe, because that's how it sounded. I also noticed that the passing lamps were out. *sigh* I parked in the driveway to clear out a berth in the garage. Then she didn't start. A call to Squidley tracked down the problem: they hadn't tightened down the positive battery cable! While under the seat, I fixed the battery gauge and passing lamp issue: they had removed the fuse! I wonder if they did that to prevent battery drain? I wonder if a loose battery cable can cause backfiring? She didn't backfire when I ran her after tightening the battery. Over the weekend I'll give her a good cleaning (she still has oil from the blow up covering her shiny bits) and check out what they did. Oh yeah, and I'll put some miles on her! Dave PS, I am attaching the list of the parts they bought and labor used.
  22. A couple of months ago I got an 83 Venture Royal project. When I first got it it would turn over slowly. I've had the battery out while I've been working on other things. Now when I try and start her everything dies when I hit the starter button and I need disconnect the battery to get it back. Is there anything I should check before I remove the starter? Is there a way I can do and initial check on the starter before I remove it from the bike? I know enough about electrical systems to be dangerous. I’m in school at Washtenaw
  23. Hi, I purchased a Battery Bug from Argus Analyzer and I wrote them an email yesterday with a question concerning my Battery Bug that I installed on my 04 RSV. Here is Jim's response. He responded within 24 hours of my initial question and the article he attached is that written by Stu Oltman, the editor of Wing World Magazine. I just had to share that with the good folks on the forum here. His timely response and the article he sent me answered all my questions and alleviated any of my worry or anxiety about the operation of the Bug. All in all I think they are great folks to deal with. I don't know how to attach a word doc or I would put it in here. I don't have a date for the month the evaluation was written up in Wing Word Magazine but I know Stu and he wrote an excellent review. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta Chris - Remember the ‘Bug is showing “Cranking Health” not the “Battery Life”. Think of Cranking Health as the battery’s ability to do its job of starting the engine. There are many factors affecting that ability. Chiefly - the SIZE of the battery. A tiny battery and a HUGE engine will give a low Cranking Health % even when the battery is new - because the battery will have a hard time cranking that engine. In addition – cold temperatures will affect cranking health in a negative way. Cold temps make it harder to crank the engine both because the battery is cold AND the engine oil is cold an sluggish. Remember also that the %-age on the display ONLY goes down. It is displaying the WORST start and therefore the number will never go up again. Expect the % cranking health displayed to steady itself after a few weeks, then slowly descend over time. Attached is an article that you might find interesting as well. Please let me know if you have more questions! Jim Argus Analyzers 401-965-4569
  24. I installed a Battery Bug voltage meter along with a new Deka battery on Friday last week. When I installed it the Battery monitor told me it was at 100% capacity. I keep it on the Battery Tender all the time. This morning when I went out to the garage it was reading 99% and I took the bike for a short ride and now it is down to 97% but is reading 14.2 volts charging. I'm wondering if this is normal or if there is something wrong? I installed a new high output stator two weeks ago as well. Is this normal? Or should it say 100% for quite a length of time before it begins to tell me that the battery capacity is going down or could I have a charging problem? Thank you for your comments and help. Chris
  25. Here is a picture of where I installed my Battery Bug Volt/battery monitor/thingy. When I bought my bike in November I realized that the battery was probably toast. When I installed the bug the replace battery alarm went off and both warning indicators were lit and it showed 0% of battery life left. So yesterday I installed a new Deka ETX20L, hooked everything back up and the bug immediately showed 100% battery condition, the warning indicators went off, the alarm stopped beeping and it read 14.2 volts. I installed it just to the edge of the right hand speaker since I always use my headset and it is easy to read there without moving my eyes too much. Also here are a few pics of the graphics I put on my bike. So touching wood, my bike is road ready for 2011. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta
