  1. Does anyone have a set of stock (new style) antenna's, they would like to part with? My new trike has the CB antanna missing and the radio antenna is broke. I know I can install fireflys. but I like the new style folding whips.
  2. I am installing the firestik firefly 3foot antennas in place of the stock ones. After searching the other antenna related threads, I have a question: Instead of replacing all the wiring and the antenna mounts, Is it possible to just drill out the antenna mount and rethread it to the correct thread to match the antenna and just screw the firestik into the mount? I'd do this on both sides. Then just have the CB antenna tuned to the system. I already bought all the components to change everything over. But if it is possible then maybe it could save someone else some money. Thanks in advance
  3. I installed a firestick antenna. To tune it I disconnected the cable from the antenna that goes to the radio and hooked it to the SWR meter so I have the cable running from the radio to the SWR meter. I then took the jumper cable that came with the SWR meter and hooked it to the SWR meter ANT connection and then to the antenna. Following the SWR meter instructions I then set the switch on the SWR meter to FWD. I then pushed the PTT button on the bike . The directions say to adjust the meter until it hits the set on the fare right of the meter. When I turn the knob all the way to adjust the needle it doesn't even move up to the 1.5 mark. A long ways from the SET mark. What am I doing wrong or does my CB not work. Any advise would be appreciated Thanks Norm
  4. Looking for some nice shorty antennas for my '04. Anyone have any suggestions were to get some nice ones that actually work fairly well?
  5. At certain rpm's the antenna on the right side starts to vibrate so loud is sounds like the rear right speaker is blown. There appears to be just enough play in the spring loaded doo-hicky that lifts up to allow the antenna to fold forward it allows vibration. Has anyone had this problem they've fixed without having to changeout the antenna's?
  6. I managed to break the antenna on my '86 VR today right at the CB load (wide part). Anyone have the entire antenna shaft where it screws into the mount that they would part with for a reasonable amount? Thanks for your help.
  7. I would like to replace my original antennas by a new one. Especially for AM-FM and for a Sirius (satellite) . If one of you had installed a (shark fin antenna), I will really appreciate to receive your feed back and the specification of your new antenna. I live in a region where the signal is very poor. Thank you for your reply !
  8. ok so I had an atnenna brake on my 91 vr. So I went to the local radio shack and bought a twist on pl 259 coax connector. then a trip to the local truck stop where I purchased a 3 ftK40 antena, stud mount , and 90 degree pl-259 adaptor. This project took more timedeciding what antenna to buy than it did to do. First I cut the coax as close to the original antenna as possible and then screwd on the conector. Then installed the stud mount and 90 degree adaptor and screwed the coax back on. Already had the radio tuned to a channel that Ive never been able to pick up and waalaaa it picked up. Now for the ?? Will the stock cb handle 2 antennas? I am debating adding a splitter inline and getting 2 new coax cables to hook up 2 antenna instead of one. I just dont want to burn up the unit. And of course either way Ill be getting the swr set as soon as possible. David
  9. I noticed when I was shopping for my RSV that several I saw on the internet had rusted antenna bases, so this must be fairly common. Here is a pic of one of mine and both are pretty rusty. I like the look of the standard antennas so I really don't want to switch to the Firefly's. Has anybody here had any luck replacing or fixing these things? http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/elmicko2002/utf-8BSU1HMDAyMTYtMjAxMTAyMTYtMTMxOC5qcGc.jpg
  10. Is there an adapter that mates a firestickII antenna to the stock 1st gen set up. The firestick antennas have a male stud attachment and so does the antenna mount on the bike........I dont want to do the marshal mod but would love to fix my stock setup. Either that or find a new to me antenna . The top part of mine broke off just above the large round pice where you do the adjustments for the cb section. Thanks in advance David
  11. Has anyone on the board ever upgraded their '99 CB and Radio antennas to the newer style. The pics and diagrams in the service pdf aren't all that great and leave a lot of questions. Just wondering what you had to do to get'r done.... I have the complete setup including the brackets. I'm not all that interested in doing the Marshall Antenna Mod, so those suggestions are gonna fall on deaf ears... Any insight would be appreciated....
  12. In a brilliant move while uncovering the Venture I snagged the cover and broke the antenna, the one with the black plastic piece in the middle. I broke it off at the top of the black piece. I thought this was the CB antenna. I took it off and went ridding and found that my FM radio reception was very poor. So was this the Radio antenna? I have looked back over a couple of post but still am confussed, I would like to replace both antennas with one is there a post that explains how to do this and is this a complicated process? What is the best antenna to use? Thanks for any help!
  13. I saw a replacement stock antenna last week on Ebay. Someone else finally outbid me at around $60. I was looking for a headset on Sierra electronics (http://www.sierra-mc.com/products.asp?id=145) and saw a stock replacement antenna for only $40. Looks good, is a bit taller than the old one.
  14. Well, after getting the bike back from the shop I decided to crack open the fairing to double check for anything loose and amiss.. and happy to report all is good.. buddy did a decent job (as far as I can see.. but they know I will be back in a huff should something be amiss).. I took the time to install a hidden antenna.. I had already tried the small box amplified powered antenna and yeah, it seemed to work OK.. but nothing to scream home about to be honest.. I wrangled the antenna cable to pop out wear I could reach in and switch cables when away from home and couldn't really tell any difference to be honest.. However, it DOES work and rather reasonably well for the price.. usually available online for 20 to 30 bucks.. But this time I installed a different one that a friend pointed me to, and I do have to report "wow" again. This one picks up MUCH better than the OEM antenna and better than the Firestik does. Wow, and it's unpowered.. glue it to the inside of the fairing and voila, plug and play.. I have to say I'm quite impressed with the signal it picks up.. I have to do some testing to see if the bulk of the bike blocks a lot of signal or not.. I seldom ever use the CB on this bike, and feel the antennas, be it the OEM or the Firestiks, impart some vibration to the bike in heavy winds (which we get a lot around here).. So once the rains stop I'll be able to take it on a run and see how it handles with the antennas off the bike.. The bike looks like it's missing something aesthetic without the antennas present.. But meh.. "tis better to feel than to look good".. Cheers
  15. okay I did the dual firestick antenna modification. I really like the look. I live probably 220 miles from the nearest CB shop that I know of. When I go on line to look for a SWR meter to tune my CB antenna myself I see them priced from very low to very high. Since it isn't something I will use much after the one time I don't want to spend alot of money. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what make and model to buy without spending a bunch of money or should I just wait until I can make a trip to the nearest CB shop and let them do it. Norm
  16. I bought a FireStik antenna for my bike because I read a few posts that said it was an easy swap. Apparently, I'm not that bright when it comes to CB's. The antenna has a male end on it and so does the cable on the bike mount, so it won't just screw on. I've found replacement cables, but they all have the wrong connector at the radio end (and they're all 18'). So how do I get a cable on this thing??? I'm completely lost. Thanks guys.
  17. After researching different antennas on line I found a good deal on an amplified AM-FM antenna at my local PEP Boys! The unit cost $19.99 + tax. I tested and mounted it below the windshield. It works better than the original 48" CB whip. Attached are a few photos for anyone interested in the install.
  18. Anybody have any they want to part with? I mounted a MKII trunk on my MKI. I think it looks good and there is tons more room in there. For right now I have my 84 antenna mount kind of jerry rigged to do the job. But I need the MKII mounts to do the job right. I only have one antenna so I only really need one, but I would find a use for another if there's one available. Lik for a small flag or similar. Thanks, Bill
  19. I'm going to replace the FM radio antenna on my '86 VR with a totally different kind of amplified antenna. So, I'm getting rid of one antenna mast. Ok, so the question is when I followed the antenna lead up under the seat and the false tank cover I found the weirdest collaboration of splitters and antenna cables I have ever seen. Does anybody know the reason for the splitter? I would rather just connect it straight to the antenna input at the radio, would that cause any issues?
  20. any body got an antenna they want to sale ? MIne broke off this weekend, so Im looking for a new one. David
  21. My bike was missing the antenna for the radio, I don't have a garage for my bike, it gets covered with a nice cover, I needed an antenna, here is what I did. I went to autozone and bought a power boosted flat antenna, its designed for use on a windshield or the side of a boat, its self adhesive in three places, its held on through some pretty good temps so far this summer and works amazingly well. I utilized the right saddle bag as the location for the antenna.I located it on the door at its widest point. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/Touched1/PICT0004.jpg I drilled a 1/2 inch hole at the back ledge of the bag to run the power wire and the antenna cable through. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/Touched1/PICT0005.jpg I utilized the back of the lock as a ground. Installed the switch with the others, you may notice that the CB has been taken off the bike and new left cover has been fabricated to hold the class and cover the overflow. The red switch is for the radio antenna booster the other switches are running lights and rear light bar lights. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/Touched1/PICT0001.jpg It took me about and hour, cost 25.00 and I now have a great radio signal just about everywhere I go, no problem with garaging my bike under a cover. and a nice clean looking view to the back of my ride. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/Touched1/PICT0010.jpg
  22. Hi guys, silly question for you knowledgeable types out there.. Is the FireStick II CB antenna compatible with the mod on the bike? I can't find the reference but it's the one where you remove the OEM antennas and replace them with Firesticks.. On our recent road trip, I had been experiencing weird vibes on the bike, in the grips, floorboards etc... and poof, the vibes went away.. so did my CB antenna.. croid, the vibes were from the antenna coming loose in it's mount.. groan. While in the US, I picked up an inexpensive FireStick II CB antenna to plug the hole with.. This antenna is thicker and less flexible than the other ones and has a red cap vice a black one. Is this OK to use, or will it cause any probs? I don't use comms often on the bike, but would sometimes listen in on CB for reports and such.. I didn't get a chance to try out the new antenna yet.. Any ideas?
  23. Looking for a bracket mount for a Garmin 665 XM satellite antenna. Similar to this. http://www.gpscity.ca/g/gps/l/4/ram344.jpg Any other options than RAM? Anyone have one to move along to a new home? Thanks
  24. Hi guys, what's the shortest CB antenna I can mount on my RSV? I know I may be sacrificing a lot of range by going shorter but I seldom use CB but don't want to give up the capability. I currently have the 36" Firestiks and mods on both sides but soon going to try out the hidden amplified am/fm antenna on the bike.. if it works that well, then I would want to reduce the CB antenna to balance out the look of the bike without losing the CB antenna completely.. Part number, where to purchase etc etc.. would be appreciated.. Cheers
  25. I think it came out pretty good. I am trying to figure out how to post the pic. I think they are attached if not I will put them in my gallary. It only takes about 15 minutes to take it down once you have the cover for the back made. I made mine out of fiberglass and covered with the same material as the seat. It could be painted to match the bike but it would have to be much smoother ie more time to build. All of the wires involved have plugs and will fit under the cover I made. There are only about 10 bolts or so involved and all are accessable without taking off the side bags. I think that it is a very good option for soloing the bike. I makes the bike feel entirely different and look different it is a nice change. When I get my hidden antenna for the radio it will be an even faster change out. I made a temp bracket for it out of a piece of stainless angle that works pretty good. The cover that is shown in the picture is can not hold the weight of a rider because it is to thin but the next one that I build will. With this one I was just trying to work out the bugs. My next cover will have the foam like they put under the soft tops on cars on it before the seat material. And I am thinking of putting lights or a light in the back of it also. http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smilies/action-smiley-083.gif The cool thing about this mod is that you don't have to modifiy the bike so you can go back to original very quickly. The only thing that you have to do to the bike is remove part of the little foam rubber pads that are on the fender to cushion the wires on the bike I just removed the entire pad and I plan on repositioning it when I go back to touring.. My plan is to video taking it down to Solo and then going back to Touring. I should have that done in about a few weeks. One thing I am waiting for it my hidden radio antenna that I have ordered from Ebay. Since I never use the CB my plan is to remove that antenna. As soon as my hidden antenna comes in and I get it installed I will be making the videos and I will post them here and probably on Utube.
